Festival will stay ntown, says Chamber
(continued from page 1)
tives that we c un look into." The Festival
may even be better by moving from the
D'Angelo property, Levesque said.
The Chamber's Apple Harvest Festival
Committee had met last Thursday to
discuss other possible locations for the
Festival besides the downtown, aocording
to Levesque. When the meeting was over,
everyone who had attended agreed the
Apple Harvest Festival will stay downtown,
especially for its twentieth anniversa
. At the meeting they also discussed
some changes for the 1988 Festival One
of the suggestions that pertains to the
D'Angelo property is that if the lot is not
available, "move the carnival to the Elks
Club along with eight booths "
Other location suggestions made by
the Chamber are.
*Move the information booth to the
green.
*Move two booths from the green to
the Elks.
*Move three booths from the vacant
lot to the Elks.
Some of the reasons the Festival
Committee decided the downtown area
was best are:
oElect lcal needs are in place.
*The parade route has been established.
*It is centrally located.
*It has been traditional; all publicity
has been listed for this area.
*Other towns have their major fairs
downtown including Glastonbury. Waterbury,
New Britain. Hartford and New
Haven.
*Easy access for the shuttle busses.
*Majority of participants are in favor
of having the festival downtown.
*There are mulUple parking lots
available.
Levesque said there were very few
problems reported this year when the
festival was located in its tradiUonal
place. One problem was that some of the
children were spraying "silly string'(a
plastic novelty sprayed from an aerosol
can). Levesque said the string caused
problems as it was sprayed on food and
the children chased each other and
knocked over some people. Levesque said
she wig be asking downtown merchants
not to sell the product during Festival
tiTTle.
The senior citizens downtown,
Levesque said, had concerns about
people parking illegally on Academy Hill,
although police were tickeUng. Also some
booth proprietors used the garbage
dumpstera from the LincoLn-Lewls senior
complex. In addition, teenagers at the
Festival rang door belts to ask to use the
bathroom facilities despite the presence
of ports-John . Teenagers were also
=making out" behind the complex,
Levesque said.
Levesque said she will sit down with
a representative of LincoLn-Lewis and
deveIop a list of potential problems and
possible solutions.
Among the locations suggested and
the reasons they were rejected were as
follows:
oR creaUon Park. Levesque said that
Parks Superintendent Richard Egidio
said that the parks would not be a good
location. There are youth programs going
on at the park during Festival time which
would have to be interrupted. In addition,
Egldio said, the cost to repair the grounds
after the Festival would be immense.
Levesque said Recreation Parkwould
not be a good location due to its proximity
to the sewage treatment plant. She said
the smell may be unappetizing for the
consumption of food.
Recreation Park would not work out
also because the area is residential. There
would be too much traffic and people may
park on private property.
Safety reasons were anotlher concem
with Recreation Park. Levesque said there
is the potential for a drowning. Also there
are too many dark areas that could cause
potential problems.
*A suggestion was made to close off
High Street and use the YMCA property
for the Festival. However, Levesque said
that Lt. William Per y of the police department
said that it would be too dlfficult to
re-route the automotive traffic and moni-.
tor the pedestrian traffic.
*Central Elementary School was
suggested but Levesque said this would
not work because it was felt the Festival
Have
NAmE
ADDRESS
would be a deterrent to the educational
process. The students at Central would
find it difficult to concentrate ifthe festival
was outside thei door.
Central was also eliminated as a site
because there is only one entrance- Eden
Avenue. Downtown would only get traffic
jams.
Also the electrical needs wouldn't be
be performed.
Soccer is played on the field on the
weekend. The grounds at Central would
too expensive to repair.
*Also considered for the Festival has
been Lake Compounce. But this idea
gained little support because of internal
problemswithin the park and because the
park advertises itself as Bristol.
-The NaUonal Guard A nory on
Woodruff Street was suggested but that
would not work because of the lack of
highway access, parking, space and electrical
needs.
