Give the officials a break!
by Ed Adamowltz
for The Observer
Another basketball season is almost
upon us and the men and women in the
striped shirts are preparing to go under
the micn oscope from fans across the state.
But the dream of all afficials is, *If only a
f w of these critics could change places
with us farJust onegamel* It'sguarsnteed
that they would come out of that contest
with a clearer insight towards the difficulty
of the job, and probably more respect,
for all officials concerned.
The nature of the game forees officials
to make decisions so quickly that they
must come by reflex, and must be COR-
REC'T Knowing the rules of course is a
necessity but the next time you attend a
game, watch the hustle and positioning of
. the officials. Being at the right place with
the proper angle will probably eliminate
many arguments than making the right or
vn'ong call. Coaches say in unison, "If an
official is on top of the play then weql be
more understanding should we disagree
with the call. Because at that time, we
know they saw it, so we hope they know
the .flesll"
With the advent of the instant replay it
must be realized that the fans are afforded
the luxury of slow motion and continuous
angles; and even then, 99 times out of
I00, the officials are correct.
Rule changes will always be an important
part of refining and improving the
sport of bas! etball. What began as an
experiment in Iowa and North Dakota
back in 1982, the three-point shot has
now been adopted nationally. The girls
game has retained the use of the smaller
ball. but have gone back to the boy's rules
this year including the 3-point shot...and
no shot-clock`
Another rule change is to help the
officials from those who continue to abuse
them. Technical fouls this season are all
penalized with two free throws. This not
only provides a clearer interpre, tation for
the officials but a tougher penalty to
players and c0aches
What motivates the!se indivi luals to
become such objects of abuse? It's certainly
not the money; so what keeps these
people coming back? Simply put, it's a
labor of love! Those who comprise this
group certainly deserve more respect than
they get. Next time you go to a game, listen
to the crowd when the officials are introduced,
and try and be the one personwho
cheers instead of the traditional boos!l
