Did you know? 

Norton Cancer Care treats more than half of the cancer cases in Louisville. 

Norton Heart Care provides services to more than 40,000 patients per year 

and is home to one of the world’s largest heart laser surgery programs. 

Norton Women’s Pavilion offers comprehensive care for each stage of 

a woman’s life and is the preferred provider of maternity care in our 

community. Norton Healthcare’s pastoral care services, in collaboration 

with the Office of Church and Health Ministries, are an integral part of 

our faith-based mission to heal the body, mind and spirit. 

You have helped make all this possible. Your commitment to the Norton 

Healthcare Foundation – in giving generously of your time and resources 

– is indeed our largest asset and allows us to enhance the programs and 

services offered at our adult-service hospitals, consistent with Norton 

Healthcare’s not-for-profit mission. 

Thanks to your generosity and growing community support, 2005 proved 

to be a significant year, as a 44 percent increase in funds raised assisted in 

improving our support of the people, facilities and services provided by 

Norton Hospital, Norton Audubon Hospital, Norton Southwest Hospital 

(renamed Norton Southwest Medical Center) and Norton Suburban 

Hospital, as well as offer spiritual guidance to patients and their families 

through pastoral care services. 

In 2005, our name changed from Norton “Hospitals” Foundation to the 

Norton Healthcare Foundation and we began using our new “Making a 

Difference” tagline; because that’s exactly what we want to do. 

We look forward to making a difference for our patients, their families, 

the community and our caregivers this year.

NICU Family Center 

Neonatal intensive care unit at Norton Suburban Hospital 

When Marshall Coomes was born five weeks early at Norton Suburban Hospital 

in July 2005, his parents, Laura and Pat, were overjoyed. However, because of his 

early arrival, he was not able to eat like other newborns. Caregivers worked with 

the Coomes family and, over a 12-day period, Marshall learned to take a bottle and 

breastfeed. During his stay, Laura and Pat spent hours comforting him while doctors 

and nurses helped educate and care for the entire family until Marshall had gained 

enough weight to go home. 

The Coomes family lives in Louisville and was able to easily spend time with 

Marshall throughout his hospitalization; unfortunately, not all families live nearby. 

Many have lengthy trips to the hospital and their premature babies require even 

longer stays. 

That is why the Norton Healthcare Foundation joined together with Norton 

Suburban Hospital to create the NICU Family Center – a home-like environment 

to comfort and educate families while their babies receive lifesaving care in the 

hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit. 

Parents can stay overnight at the center, do laundry or prepare a meal while 

remaining a short walk from their baby. “With a safe haven nearby, we 

concentrated on family bonding and helping our baby grow strong,” Laura said. 

In 2005, 5,300 

babies were 

delivered at Norton 

Suburban Hospital. 

Of that number, 

16.4 percent, or 868 

infants, spent time 

in the neonatal 

intensive care unit.

Norton Heart and Vascular Center 

Norton Audubon Hospital 

Constance Porter was en route to work when she experienced severe chest pain. A trip to Norton Audubon 

Hospital’s emergency department revealed she was having a heart attack. After a heart catheterization and 

blood work, she was soon being prepared for quadruple bypass surgery. 

Throughout her hospitalization, Constance had many visitors stop by to pray and simply hold her hand, 

but the individual she credits with helping save her life, along with all her caregivers at Norton Audubon 

Hospital, is chaplain Keitha Brasler. 

Quality medical care combined with compassion was the recipe for Constance’s recovery. “I was just amazed 

at how much everyone cared about me and connected with my spirituality,” Constance said. 

In addition to supporting pastoral care services, the Norton Healthcare Foundation also provides funding for 

the medical attention that patients like Constance receive both in the hospital and during follow-up visits for 

cardiovascular health. In 2005, the Norton Healthcare Foundation initiated fundraising for the Norton Heart 

and Vascular Center. The center will be centrally located at Norton Audubon Hospital and will provide heart 

and vascular diagnostic testing, making a difference for heart patients throughout the region.

What is a virtue? As we know it, a virtue is a beneficial quality or a standard 

of morality. 

Thanks to support from employees, physicians and individuals at Norton Suburban 

Hospital, the Norton Healthcare Foundation provided funding for an improved 

location and renovation of the hospital’s chapel. In planning the new chapel, 

it was important to instill many of the virtues that transcend humanity and the 

power of healing into the new space. Sixteen chairs now fill the new chapel, each 

adorned with its own virtue purchased and chosen by individual donors. Some of 

the virtues named include joy, grace, integrity, love and peace. 

The new chapel at Norton Suburban Hospital is located on the first floor and is 

open to all who seek spiritual guidance as well as a place to pray, heal, collect 

thoughts, and find strength during difficult times. 

The community’s generosity continues to make a difference by funding pastoral 

care services at the adult-service facilities of Norton Healthcare: one way to honor 

the healing of the mind, body and spirit of patients, families and employees in the 

community we serve.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation 

Program 


Diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) almost seven years ago, 

Ardella “Ducky” Gaines could barely walk to the mailbox. Now, she can walk a mile 

thanks to Norton Suburban Hospital’s pulmonary rehabilitation program. 

Three times a week, Ducky and other regulars use the center for rehabilitation, 

performing mild exercises to improve breathing techniques and muscle use, all the 

while monitored by four respiratory therapists. The patients walk on treadmills, ride 

stationary bicycles and work their arm muscles with arm ergometers. The program 

serves as a rehabilitation service and also encourages peer support for sufferers 

through the sharing of rehab successes, feelings and friendship. 

In 2005, the Norton Healthcare Foundation helped fund new exercise equipment to 

assist patients in their rehabilitation process. “You can’t imagine what a difference 

this equipment makes,” Ducky said. “Without this rehab, I would not be as healthy or 

strong as I am. We really do learn how to make a bad situation better.” 

The pulmonary rehabilitation program and equipment have helped Ducky 

take a deep breath – many deep breaths – improving her health and loving 

what each new day brings.
