we all need to help others out, especially
if we have some gifts and talents,”
Dr. Meier said. “When the call went out
for orthopaedic surgeons, and particularly
pediatric orthopaedic surgeons, I felt it was
an important opportunity for me to serve.”
During his two weeks in Haiti, Dr. Meier
kept everyone back home updated on his
activities by calling in reports posted on a
Employees donate
health kits for Haiti
Employees in Patient Financial
Services recently purchased items to
assemble 181 health kits for survivors
of the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti.
Melanie Payne, who works in the
self-pay unit, learned that the United
Methodist Church had asked the Boy
Scouts for help in collecting items for
the health kits. Payne, whose son is a
Boy Scout, brought the request to the
attention of Tina McNelly, manager of
vendor support. McNelly turned it into
a competition for the entire Patient
Financial Services team, offering a free
lunch to the group that collected and
assembled the most kits.
Each kit contained a hand towel,
wash cloth, comb, nail file or fingernail
clippers, bath-size bar of soap,
toothbrush, six adhesive bandages and
$1 for toothpaste.
The winning team was cash/system
support, who donated 41 bags. The selfpay/vendor
support team was a close
second with 38 bags.
“Every time this group comes
together to do something from their
hearts I am always amazed,” McNelly
said. “They give generously whenever
they are asked to participate in a worthy
cause.”
The United Methodist Church,
which has a presence in Haiti, shipped
the health kits to Haiti, where they were
Excerpts from Dr. Meier’s blog from Haiti
Jan. 30
We arrived in Haiti today. The airport reminded me of a
war-type situation with multiple helicopters being flown in
and out, multiple planes, constant noise and many soldiers.
We were safely taken from the airport to our compound
near Port-au-Prince via our security team. The compound
in which we’re staying is very secure and was relatively
undamaged in the earthquake. We spent the afternoon
cleaning up portions of the compound that were damaged
by the earthquake to free up some space, moving a lot of
concrete rubble. We also cleared out some storage areas to
hopefully be used as operating rooms.
Feb. 2
The surgical team here feels that our talents would be
better served elsewhere. We are actively seeking out places
where we can help with surgery.
Feb. 3
We were very welcomed [at Sacred Heart], as there
were many orthopaedic cases; this is a welcome change
from what we’ve been doing. We finally are able to put our
surgical skills to use to help victims of the earthquake, many
of whom, even though it is three weeks since the event, are
being seen at the hospital for the first time.
Josh Meier, M.D., center, consults with two other
physicians in Haiti.
Feb. 6
I would like to tell all of the operating room nurses at
Kosair Children’s Hospital that when I get back I will not
complain about not having instruments or other things for
my cases. For every case we do here we have to individually
sterilize every single piece of equipment that we might need.
It gives all of us a new appreciation for all the work that the
nurses in the operating room do for us on a daily basis.
Feb. 8
I think one of the things that is difficult is that surgeons,
by nature, worry a lot. At least I do. I worry that the cast
will cause pressure sores. I worry that surgical incision will
get infected. I worry that bones will not heal in their proper
position. Here, the frustration is that I will not be around
in a month to make sure that none of this happens. We as
surgeons and doctors in general are used to having a very
high level of control, and not having the ability to have
that control down here is what is getting to us. The shear
number of people that need to be treated and the complexity
of their injuries makes it so challenging that, just to go
downstairs to get a box of supplies for the OR, causes you to
get stopped by multiple doctors to look at X-rays, multiple
translators to say, hey, this patient needs something, as well
as family members of patients that end up seeing you in the
tents that recognize you as a doctor saying, please come in
here, grabbing your arm. There’s just too much to do at any
one time. Please keep all the people in Haiti in your prayers
continually as, even once we leave and new doctors come
and go, they will require the support for a long, long time.

Screening key to surviving colon cancer
Lavonne White, R.N., coordinator of health promotions,
was surprised by the number of people she met at cancer
screening events in March who seemed afraid to talk about
colon cancer.
“In observance of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness
Month in March, Norton Cancer Institute sponsored
community cancer screening events at local shopping
malls and at Norton Healthcare hospitals,” White said.
“Many people stopped by our booth to see what we were
offering, but when we mentioned colon cancer screening,
the majority of them didn’t want to talk about it. However,
we were able to educate a few people and send a colorectal
cancer screening kit home with some of them.”
The reluctance to discuss colorectal cancer is one of the
reasons it is the second leading cause of cancer death in the
United States, despite having a higher than 90 percent cure
rate when caught in an early, treatable stage.
“The key to surviving colorectal cancer is early detection,
for the boys. The woman said they really needed clothing
and food. Rayhill was distressed that this family was lacking
even the basic necessities, so she spearheaded an effort to
provide them with a great Christmas. The patient was able
to call her sons and tell them they could come home.
Survey gauges nursing work environment
Registered nurses at Norton Brownsboro Hospital are
invited to participate in the National Database of Nursing
Quality Indicators (NDNQI) registered nurse survey,
May 3 through 23. The survey, titled “Practice Environment
Scale,” focuses on the nursing practice environment,
job enjoyment/satisfaction, work context and nurse
characteristics at the unit level.
The Web-based survey is completely confidential, and
there is no way to link surveys to individuals. Eligible
registered nurses will receive e-mail notification of the link
for the online survey and will have the option of taking
Two days before Christmas, Rayhill filled her SUV with
all the food, clothes and toys the office staff had collected
and personally delivered them. She was greeted by a very
emotional, grateful family.
Tana Bolus, R.N.
Tana Bolus, a registered nurse
in the Emergency Department at
Norton Audubon Hospital and
mother of four boys, was deeply
moved when a boy died at a youth
baseball game in 2008 after being
struck with a baseball bat.
Because Bolus knew the boy’s life might have been
saved if a defibrillator had been available at the ball field,
she and a friend arranged for funding to purchase portable
defibrillators for Floyd and Clark County baseball parks.
Just one week after acquiring a defibrillator for the Floyds
Knobs baseball park, Bolus was attending a game when a
37-year-old woman collapsed. Bolus sprung to the woman’s
aid. Her heart needed to be defibrillated and, thanks to
Bolus’ efforts, a defibrillator was available. With the help of
a doctor, police officer and emergency medical technician,
the woman’s heart was started and she eventually made a
full recovery. Bolus and her friend have since raised enough
money to buy 30 defibrillators for New Albany/Floyd
County schools. Bolus also unselfishly gives of her time to
provide training on the devices.
part-time employees who spend 50 percent of their time in
direct patient care and have been employed a minimum of
three months in their unit/department.
Champions will be assigned to each unit or department.
Nurses can go to the champions with any questions about
the survey. Registered nurses are encouraged to participate
in this opportunity to confidentially share their opinions
regarding their practice environment. Participants will be
Service recovery tool now easier to use
Norton Healthcare is committed to offering patients
remarkable care. To meet this standard, in 2006 Service
Excellence established the Service with HEART program,
which emphasizes five guidelines for addressing service
concerns:
Hear the concern
Empathize and let the customer know you understand
Apologize for the situation without blaming
Respond by doing what you can to take care of the
customer’s concerns
Thank the customer for bringing the concern to
your attention
In order to manage issues effectively, the service recovery
tool on Nsider allows staff to enter specific information
about the event, including how the situation was resolved.
To make the tool easier and more efficient, enhancements
were developed, reducing the number of entries staff must
make on the form from 24 to 15 and auto-populating eight
of those fields with data.
“We listened to what employees were saying about the
tool,” said Kerrie Fullen, manager, Service Excellence.
“These enhancements cut the time in half for submitting a
form. Some of the reports also were changed to improve the
look and feel, and we added a report that will help us better
track inventory.”
LIVING the Service Basics
Anticipate needs: I provide prompt, compassionate service that exceeds expectations.
• Provide information that helps set customer expectations.
• Complete service accurately and promptly.
• Show concern and compassion in everything you do.
• View complaints or issues as “opportunities” to improve the customer experience.
Comments from recent customer surveys
“The nurse was very kind and had a very good bedside manner. She explained everything
to me and asked if there was anything else she could do before she left the room.”
“The doctor offered plenty of information, answered any and all of my questions, took
his time and didn’t rush to his next patient.”
While most concerns are minor and easily handled with
an apology, it’s important to be able to accurately track and
manage these situations. This allows management to assess
and address any trends. The new enhancements ensure
employees can efficiently and routinely submit information.
Enhancements to the Service with HEART service
recovery online tool is scheduled to go live April 1. For
more information, call 629-6717.
Pediatric medical center opening in May
Just over a year ago, on March 10, 2009, ground was
broken for Kosair Children’s Medical Center – Brownsboro,
a 71,300-square-foot pediatric outpatient medical center.
When the center opens on May 26 it will be the only
pediatric outpatient facility of its type in Kentucky. The
$50.3 million center, located adjacent to the Norton
Brownsboro Hospital campus in northeastern Louisville,
will feature:
• Pediatric emergency services with 15 treatment rooms,
three sedation rooms and a dedicated radiology suite
• A pediatric diagnostic imaging center featuring MRI, CT,
X-ray, fluoroscopy and ultrasound services, along with a
full-service laboratory
• An outpatient surgery center for a wide range of
outpatient procedures, including ENT, orthopaedics, eye,
urinary, dental and general surgeries
The new outpatient center will have a kid-friendly
design and layout that makes use of vibrant colors and will
feature a dedicated 4-foot-high door at the main entrance,
an indoor playroom and other “children-only” areas.
Oversized treatment areas will allow parents to stay with
their children.
To help children and their families understand and
manage challenging life events and stressful health care
experiences, the facility will employ specially trained
professional child life therapists.
“We will have three full-time, on-site child life
therapists,” said Charlotte Ipsan, vice president and
administrator of the facility. “In addition, the building will
have many special features to make the medical experience
less scary for children. The child life therapists will conduct
in-service classes with all the staff to train them about
various techniques used to help divert children’s attention
and alleviate their fears.”
The center will employ approximately 140 people. Ipsan
said about half are transfers from other Norton Healthcare
facilities and half are new hires.
“I’m very proud of the fact that people who have
extensive pediatric experience are coming to work here,”
Ipsan said.
Norton Healthcare partnered with the Kentucky Museum
of Art and Craft to provide original artwork for the new
facility. Local artists led workshops in January during which
children who have a connection with Kosair Children’s
Hospital helped create two wall art pieces that will be
permanently installed at the center. One of the pieces is 48
hand-sculpted ceramic dome bubbles with illustrations that
will be mounted on aluminum and will float across the 29foot
wall of the emergency services waiting area. The piece
is inspired by happy times in the children’s lives, with the
intention of evoking positive and calming thoughts to those
who view it.
You make us remarkable, Rita Ross!
Because of the nature of her job, Rita Ross, volunteer manager at
Norton Suburban Hospital, sees daily how volunteers can affect the
lives of Norton Healthcare patients and their families. She also witnesses
how the very act of volunteering can change the lives of the volunteers
themselves. Such was the case of an older gentleman who came to Ross
after the loss of his wife. He was grieving and simply looking for a way to
stay busy. What he found was that volunteering provided a meaningful
Music therapy supports overall wellness
Music therapy is available at all Norton Healthcare
hospitals, including Kosair Children’s Hospital, to
help patients and families better cope with illness and
hospitalization. Music therapy is used to address physical,
emotional, cognitive and social needs, and has been proven
to have a positive impact on overall health.
“The music therapy program is a benefit to my patients,”
said Philip Fitzgerald, M.D., Norton Community Medical
Associates – Audubon East LL2. “I love hearing from
patients about the help provided by music therapists.”
Music therapy can be a treatment option to alleviate
pain, stress or anxiety. Individual treatment options include
singing, playing instruments, listening to music and guided
relaxation techniques.
Because treatment differs for children, Kosair Children’s
Hospital also offers expressive therapy programs that
combine art, writing, play, puppetry and music to help ease
hospital-related fear and anxiety for children and families.
To further explore the impact of music therapy,
Parkinson Support Center of Kentuckiana recently awarded
a $3,600 grant to Norton Audubon Hospital’s Music
Therapy Department. The grant will fund a 12-week pilot
program to evaluate the effectiveness of music therapy on
patients with Parkinson’s disease.
Vascular Access Center accredited by ASDIN
The Norton Audubon Hospital Vascular Access Center
has received accreditation from the American Society of
Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology (ASDIN). It is
one of only nine vascular access centers in the nation to
earn this accreditation.
The center’s physicians, Peter H. Wayne III, M.D.,
interventional radiology and medical director, and Qasim
Choudry, M.D., interventional nephrology, were individually
certified by ASDIN in 2007 and 2009, respectively.
The ASDIN accreditation signifies that a nephrology
training program or other training site has met the
association’s highest standards. The requirements relate
to institutional support, facilities, expertise, experience
and personnel directed toward training in diagnostic and
interventional nephrology.
“People underestimate music therapy,” said Shirley
Schilling, director, Quality Resource Management. “Through
this partnership we can enhance the benefit music therapy
has on treatment of disease.”
latest trends and procedures in vascular access,” said
Steve Conway, system vice president, Cardiovascular and
Pulmonary Services. “Most important, the center now
will be a location at which Norton Healthcare physicians
can train other physicians throughout the nation on
Exercise classes add fitness
to workday
Employee wellness is important. That’s why Norton Healthcare hired
certified personal trainer Lauren Fetz to offer a free exercise program for
employees. Fetz works half-time on N Good Health programs and half-time as
the Norton Scholar liaison.
Fetz leads group fitness classes on a rotating schedule at Norton Healthcare
hospitals and medical offices. Employees can participate in a 20-minute
exercise class, a 20-minute stretching class or both. No equipment is needed,
and the classes are low impact, so there’s no need to even change clothes to
participate.
“We use resistance bands, body weight and flexible strength moves,” Fetz
said. “It’s not high impact, but employees can change shoes if they’d prefer or
even participate barefoot.”
For individuals who may want personal attention, one-on-one classes are
offered by appointment. All classes are free and confidential.
The program also includes a monthly “lunch and learn” session to address
health- and nutrition-related topics. Employees can bring their lunch and learn
about a variety of topics, including how to read food labels and the best way to
manage weight. The program is intended to help employees meet their health
goals. Since it’s new, Fetz is requesting feedback on the classes and topics.
“We want everyone to get involved,” Fetz said. “Just 30 minutes a day, even
in increments, goes a long way toward dramatically improving overall health
and mood.”
Fetz holds a bachelor’s degree in health and human performance with a
concentration in public health education from the University of Louisville.
She earned her personal trainer certification from the Aerobic and Fitness
Association of America.
Functional neurosurgeon joins growing NNI
Functional neurosurgeon Todd S. Shanks, M.D., joined
Norton Neuroscience Institute (NNI) Feb. 1. His arrival
is another step in the long-range plan to build NNI into
a regional and national leader in treatment, research and
academic training for all adult and pediatric neuroscience
disciplines.
Dr. Shanks received his undergraduate degree in biology
at the University of Tennessee at Martin. He holds a Master
of Science degree in molecular physiology and a medical
degree from the University of Louisville, where he also
completed a residency with the Department of Neurological
Surgery. Dr. Shanks trained in peripheral neurosurgery and
general surgery at Louisiana State University but left because
of Hurricane Katrina. He went on to complete a fellowship
at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville with
a focus on novel techniques and deep brain stimulation
(DBS), and recently completed advanced fellowship training
in functional neurosurgery, including surgery for epilepsy
and pain management.
“I treat epilepsy, movement disorders such as essential
tremor disorder, Parkinson’s disease and several forms
of dystonia, and peripheral nerve disorders,” Dr. Shanks
said. “Certain people who suffer from these diseases can
experience great benefits with surgical intervention.”
DBS originally was a treatment for patients with
Parkinson’s who did not respond to medication. It
involves drilling one or two holes in the patient’s skull,
through which electrodes are implanted in the brain. The
electrodes are attached to thin leads that are burrowed
under the patient’s skin down the neck to
the chest. The leads are attached to a
battery pack, called an IPG, which
is implanted below the patient’s
collarbone in a separate surgery. The
electrodes deliver electrical impulses
that block or override the abnormal
brain activity.
“DBS for Parkinson’s is not
an end-of-the-line surgery
anymore,” Dr. Shanks said.
“Many are advocating for earlier intervention in the
