Johnson, Terrell named 2010 Black Achievers<br />

<strong>Norton</strong> <strong>Healthcare</strong> employees Shirl D. Johnson, R.N.,<br />

and Cedric Terrell, Pharm.D., have been nom<strong>in</strong>ated by their<br />

peers as 2010 Black Achievers. They were recognized for<br />

their service to African-American youth dur<strong>in</strong>g the annual<br />

Chestnut Street YMCA Black Achievers awards banquet at<br />

the Galt House Hotel on Feb. 27.<br />

As system director of Performance, Johnson is<br />

responsible for an <strong>in</strong>tegrated portfolio of quality and patient<br />

throughput <strong>in</strong>itiatives. Her contributions as a Six Sigma<br />

Black Belt have delivered positive outcomes for <strong>Norton</strong><br />

Audubon Hospital, which ga<strong>in</strong>ed recognition <strong>in</strong> 2008 for<br />

achiev<strong>in</strong>g positive outcomes associated with core measures<br />

and patient safety.<br />

Johnson received an associate degree <strong>in</strong> nurs<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

Kentucky State University <strong>in</strong> 1989, a Bachelor of Science<br />

degree <strong>in</strong> nurs<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 1993, a master’s degree <strong>in</strong> nurs<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from Wright State University <strong>in</strong> 1999 and a Master of<br />

Science degree <strong>in</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istration from Central Michigan<br />

University <strong>in</strong> 2005. She is a member of the graduate chapter<br />

of the Eta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.<br />

She enjoys mentor<strong>in</strong>g students attend<strong>in</strong>g Brown School,<br />

undergraduates and graduate nurs<strong>in</strong>g students.<br />

Terrell is the director, Pharmacy Services, at <strong>Norton</strong><br />

Brownsboro Hospital. He previously served <strong>in</strong> the same<br />

position at St. Luke’s Hospital <strong>in</strong> Jacksonville, Fla., where<br />

he also served as assistant professor of Pharmacy Practice<br />

for Florida A&M University, Palm Beach Atlantic University,<br />

NOVA Southeastern University and the University of Florida<br />

College of Pharmacy. He earned his doctorate <strong>in</strong> pharmacy<br />

at Florida A&M University.<br />

Terrell is a member of the American Society of Health-<br />

System Pharmacists. He also is active <strong>in</strong> the community<br />

as a mentor for the “Tipp<strong>in</strong>g the Scales” job read<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

and mentor<strong>in</strong>g program affiliated with Kessler Mentor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Connection. He has participated as guest speaker for<br />

<strong>Norton</strong> Women’s Pavilion and the American Heart<br />

Association have formed a partnership for the Go Red<br />

For Women campaign. <strong>Norton</strong> Women’s Pavilion will be<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved with Go Red For Women throughout 2010 by<br />

offer<strong>in</strong>g programs <strong>in</strong> conjunction with the American Heart<br />

Association to educate women <strong>in</strong> Kentucky and Southern<br />

Indiana about reduc<strong>in</strong>g their risk for heart disease.<br />

The partnership will reach out to women of all ages –<br />

from high school seniors to senior citizens. The effort will<br />

various programs that focus on bridg<strong>in</strong>g the gap <strong>in</strong> health<br />

awareness, self-consciousness and communication among<br />

urban youth and the community. Terrell is a member of the<br />

graduate chapter of Theta Omega Chapter of Omega Psi<br />

Phi Inc.<br />

The mission of the YMCA Black Achievers program is to<br />

enhance the academic, personal and career development of<br />

African-American youth by provid<strong>in</strong>g specialized, culturally<br />

based programs that foster <strong>in</strong>teraction between youth and<br />

adult role models.<br />

encourage heart disease risk screen<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>Norton</strong> Women’s<br />

Heart Center to determ<strong>in</strong>e ways to reduce personal<br />

risk. The program also will encourage obstetricians and<br />

gynecologists to urge their patients to get screened, s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

OB/GYNs often are the only physicians many women see<br />

annually.<br />
