Johnson, Terrell named 2010 Black Achievers
Norton Healthcare employees Shirl D. Johnson, R.N.,
and Cedric Terrell, Pharm.D., have been nominated by their
peers as 2010 Black Achievers. They were recognized for
their service to African-American youth during the annual
Chestnut Street YMCA Black Achievers awards banquet at
the Galt House Hotel on Feb. 27.
As system director of Performance, Johnson is
responsible for an integrated portfolio of quality and patient
throughput initiatives. Her contributions as a Six Sigma
Black Belt have delivered positive outcomes for Norton
Audubon Hospital, which gained recognition in 2008 for
achieving positive outcomes associated with core measures
and patient safety.
Johnson received an associate degree in nursing from
Kentucky State University in 1989, a Bachelor of Science
degree in nursing in 1993, a master’s degree in nursing
from Wright State University in 1999 and a Master of
Science degree in administration from Central Michigan
University in 2005. She is a member of the graduate chapter
of the Eta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.
She enjoys mentoring students attending Brown School,
undergraduates and graduate nursing students.
Terrell is the director, Pharmacy Services, at Norton
Brownsboro Hospital. He previously served in the same
position at St. Luke’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., where
he also served as assistant professor of Pharmacy Practice
for Florida A&M University, Palm Beach Atlantic University,
NOVA Southeastern University and the University of Florida
College of Pharmacy. He earned his doctorate in pharmacy
at Florida A&M University.
Terrell is a member of the American Society of Health-
System Pharmacists. He also is active in the community
as a mentor for the “Tipping the Scales” job readiness
and mentoring program affiliated with Kessler Mentoring
Connection. He has participated as guest speaker for
Norton Women’s Pavilion and the American Heart
Association have formed a partnership for the Go Red
For Women campaign. Norton Women’s Pavilion will be
involved with Go Red For Women throughout 2010 by
offering programs in conjunction with the American Heart
Association to educate women in Kentucky and Southern
Indiana about reducing their risk for heart disease.
The partnership will reach out to women of all ages –
from high school seniors to senior citizens. The effort will

various programs that focus on bridging the gap in health
awareness, self-consciousness and communication among
urban youth and the community. Terrell is a member of the
graduate chapter of Theta Omega Chapter of Omega Psi
Phi Inc.
The mission of the YMCA Black Achievers program is to
enhance the academic, personal and career development of
African-American youth by providing specialized, culturally
based programs that foster interaction between youth and
adult role models.

Heart Center to determine ways to reduce personal
risk. The program also will encourage obstetricians and
gynecologists to urge their patients to get screened, since
OB/GYNs often are the only physicians many women see
annually.
