I Am- John Claire
By: Tingneilam Lamsi Khongsai
I am yet what i am none cares or knows.
My friends forsake me like a memory lost.
I am the self-consumer of my woes.
They rise and vanish in oblivious host.
Like shadows in love's frenzied, stifled throes.
And yet i am and live like vapours lost.
Into the nothingness of scorn and noise.
Into the living sea of making dreams.
Where there is neither sense of life or joys.
But the vast shipwreck of my life's esteems.
Even the dearest that i love the best.
Are strange, nay, rather stranger than the rest.
I long for scenes where man hath never trod.
A place where woman never smiled or wept.
There to abide with my creator God.
And sleep as i in childhood sweetly slept.
Untroubling and untroubled where i live.
The grass below above the vaulted sky
LAMHIL SEPTEMBER 2012 OPINION
22
how to work together, to become not only
good winners, but also good losers.
Thirdly, the statement that the
battle of Waterloo was won on the
playfields of Eton , implying that playing
games and the spirit of sportsmanship help
to inculcate lasting values, which make for
good soldiers, good fighters and good
discipline, apart from promoting 100 per
cent physical fitness. In British schools and
colleges, the fullest importance is given to
sports, especially cricket and football.
The result has been the creation
of a healthy, well-developed, disciplined
and efficient society in which people know
the right proportions in life, put everything
in the right perspective, and seldom
conduct themselves in an unsporting,
ungentlemanly and unbecoming manner.
Playing the game on the playground
naturally instructs people to play the game
of life in the right spirit, which is what
matters most, not victory or defeat.
According to sociologists,
society gains in many ways when the
government encourages sports and games
everywhere, provides playgrounds, the
necessary equipment and other facilities,
and rewards outstanding sportsmen, so as
to encourage others also to play games.
The crime graph dips, which means that
the incidence of general crimes decreases
because the right spirit and the right
approach to things is developed on the
playground.
Sport, it has been said, is not only
a manifestation of animal energy of
surplus strength to develop more strength;
it is, in addition, a safe and wholesome
outlet for the aggressive spirit in human
beings.
Those who violate the rules, play foul
or exceed the permissible limits, or indulge
in tactics that are unfair, are promptly pulled
up by the referee or the umpire. Anyone who
refuses to mend his ways or to repeatedly
violate the rules is ordered to quit the field
and is replaced by another player. This helps
to inculcate the habit of respecting the judge
and of observing the rules.
Some observers have contended
that there is a close link between sports and
a country!s industrial development and the
general progress of society. That is why it is
contended, most of the gold medals at the
Olympics are bagged by advanced countries
such as the U.S.A., Russia and Germany, and
Britain too manages to bag a few of them.
Of the eastern countries, China and Japan
plunder most of the gold and silver medals.
Is there a link also between
performance in sport and a country!s military
might? Militarily, China is the most powerful
country in the East, but Japan, which matches
the U.S.A. in industrial, especially electronic
ad-vancement, does well in sports despite
its small size. India is a large country of
continental size, and given the proper
incentives and the necessary facili-ties, this
country!s sportsmen should do well on the
sports field, but whether it is the climatic
factor, the lack of adequate nutrition and of
incentives, our sportsmen do not compare
favourably with those of the USA, Russia,
Ger-many and Australia.
In any case, the relatively poor show
of our athletes in international competitions
does not weaken the case for encouraging
sports which help to lay the foundations of
a healthy, sound society. The cost is returned
several- fold.
ESSAY ON THE IMPORTANCE OF GAMES AND
SPORTS IN OUR LIFE
- Tezaswi Si
The importance of sports and games is
being increasingly recognized in India, from
both the educational and social points of
view. More and more funds are being
allocated for encouraging sports in schools,
colleges and universities; in fact, sports have
become an essential part of the curricula.
Time was when only a few students,
who were fond of games like hockey,
football, cricket or tennis, were allowed
special facilities. But now regular
programmes are drawn up in all educational
institutions to persuade as many students as
possible, regardless of special aptitudes, to
participate in games, and not merely watch
matches occasionally to cheer up their
favourite teams or attend the prize
distribution functions at the end of a sports
season.
Educationists and others have come
to the conclusion that it is in the interest of
society as a whole that adequate facilities
should be provided, depending, of course,
upon the availability of funds, for games
and sports for the country s youth, both boys
and girls.
Sports foster friendship and amity.
Nor does the belief hold well any more that
those who take part in sports or games
would be no good at studies, and that each
year their absence from the class or shortage
of lectures would be condoned because
they can either attend to their studies or be
on the playing field for some game or the
other.
It is felt that apart from some
exceptional cases of students showing
extraordinary talent and skill in certain games,
or students who are expected to be high
on the merit list in university examinations,
most other students should play one game
or other, not necessarily for achieving
distinctions, but for the sake of sport.
Several factors need to be taken
into account in this connection. First,
physical fitness is of the utmost importance
for everyone, young and old. Participation
in games and sports invariably ensures
good health, fitness and, generally, freedom
from ailments of various types.
Also, unless the human body is
kept in smooth trim and in an overall fit
condition, even the brain will refuse to cooperate
after some time. Actually, physical
fitness is essential for proficiency in studies
and for winning distinctions in
examinations. Ailing bodies do not make
for sharp brains. Exercise in some form
or another is necessary, and sports provide
an easy method to ensure such fitness.
Secondly, regular participation in
sports provides a healthy channel for
diversion of energies. Wherever students
and other youth participate in sports
regularly, misdirection of youthful vigour
is much less and the tendency to indulge in
indiscipline and mischief is curbed.
Young people have surplus
energy, and if this is fruitfully utilised, the
foundations are laic for a healthy society,
where people are fully aware of the need
for discipline, co-operative effort, team
spirit, the cult of sportsmanship, of joint
devotion to the achievement of a common
goal in collaboration with others. They also
learn to cultivate the vital quality of learning

EXAMINATION FEVER By C. Lalboy Doungel, Shivajian
Many people think that exam is the
only time to get to know with books, and I
am no different from this category of
people who love last minute study-last
minute hero! The adverse effect is
stress,tension,frustration and panic when we
constantly work(study) without a break
during the exam; that brings us nothing but
failure at the end. All of us inclusive of who
we are wants to do well in life, and show
to the world that we can do.But most of
us don t achieve what we wish to because
of so many reasons; and laziness could be
one of them.sometimes I would daydream
asking myself, how beautiful life would be
without this word called laziness . We know
what should have been done and what is
best for us; but why still stay idle? lets boot
out laziness from us so that we are not
defeated or else we will be called Mr.defeat/
failure even if we don t like it. The most
exciting gala events(the KSO sports and
Silver Jubilee celebration) is approaching
and everyone young and old is exited! but
when I think of the exam that is ahead I
am filled with tension.WHY? may be, not
beng prepared is one reason! There is an
old popular maxim that says, slow and
steady wins the race . However, it is not
always applicable in today s rat-race of cutthroat
competition. Rather a new maxim,
fast and furious could be a better option
(as I call it). Ask yourself, Am I using my
mental ability to make history or am I using
it merely to record history made by
others?Lets remind ourselves regularly that
that we are better than we think we are, think
success and Believe Big.It is better for us to
study in advance to avoid problems during
the Exams. From the start of the academic
year/session devoting some time to study
would also help in solving all these
problems as there will be no undue panic
when exams have to be taken. Most people
from Northeast and the Kukis in particular
no doubt, loves to play Football than study,
and I am no different. Regular exercise,
playing games and a healthy diet are indeed
important for us to maintain good health
to do well in our studies. But our mentality
in trying to maintain balance between our
study and playing lies the problem because
most of us in dept don t know the reason
why we are here, if I m not wrong! Most
of us are fussy about things that will lead
us nowhere and the worst thing is we love
doing them; and also love stories that can
kill our time. And we are often the victim
of the entice of the glamour world and
find no time for studies which should be
our main concern.The upcoming
JUBILEE SPORTS of the KSO should
not hinder us in achieving what we are
suppose to achieve or else we become a
ding-bat.If we want to be successful, let s
stop thinking I should have started a
month/year ago .Instead think, I am going
to start now,my best weeks, months and
years are ahead of me .Proving oneself as
Mr.failure at the end can really hurt that will
not even have a cure.lets take the chance
now or else we will miss the bus. Better
late than never remember this! lets once
again reason together what our priority is
before we run out of time. lets not panic.
Time and Tide waits for none so let s be
on our guard so that we don t cry in the
End.

they still consider themselves a hero? Are
they ready to apologies and accept what
they did was uncalled for, or is there any
guarantee that such an incident will not
happen again in future?
While the act is deplorable in the
highest degree, cultivating the same seed
of hatred in the minds of the innocents
should be the last thing we should wish.
Three Kuki Organisations came out open
in the press appealing the people to
forgive and forget the past and stop
observing the Black September. The
initiative is highly appreciated, while it is
flabbergasting that they missed the very
fact that incidents in history are lessons
for our present and future, they are the
milestones to build and mould our future,
they are the strong and formidable
foundations on our path to foster peace
and brother hood in this context.
The Zoupi incident is not
something which should be buried away
under the sand of time. On the contrary,
it should be remembered as a symbol
of inhumanity and that such an inhuman
act does not have a place in a civilized
human world. I believe there is every
reason for the people of Manipur in
particular and the people of India in
general irrespective of caste, creed, and
religion to mourn for the victims of
Zoupi Massacre for we do not know
who will be the Zoupis of the next
Genocide of such intensity.
It may well descend upon any
one individual or community. The 13th
September should be declared a state day
so that Zoupi Massacre will not be a
precedent but served as the Omega of
such inhuman act and pray that such an
atrocities should not come upon mankind
again in future.
Black September should not be
remembered as a day of Hatred or
Vengeance but as a day of Peace and
Brotherhood. It is rather embarrassing to see
that it is considered a Black day for the Kuki
Community only, while it is a black mark in
the history of Manipur and India. The civil
Society irrespective of Manipuris, Nagas and
Kukis should come forward and pray for
the victims so that their soul rest in peace.
The day should be taken out as an
opportunity to ask the Almighty to forgive
those daring humans who butchered His
most valued creation (human being), way
beyond the limit, another human would have
the courage to even look at, for it is a tragedy
which none would ever wish even for his
most bitter enemy. We should realize the
enemies of the Kukis are not Manipuris or
Nagas or vice versa but our common enemy
is poverty, illiteracy, and underdevelopment.
The Day should be used as a Launch pad to
send out a strong message that the common
Mans need of Bread, cloths and shelters can
be fulfilled only through Peace, and
Brotherhood.
And for now, Black September or
not , the wailings of the Zoupi Victims will
continue to linger in the hearts of many for
years to come and it is our only hope and
prayer that Such an incident doesn t descend
upon Mankind again.
WHY BLACK SEPTEMBER SHOULD NOT BE OPPOSED
Kuki Black Day - September 13
Mankind has different ways of
remembering dates. The Americans
remembers 9/11 in a different way, the
Japanese remembers 6/08 differently, and
the Jews remember the Yom Hashoah
dates in yet another way. These are some
of the few among thousands of such
incidents which will never be forgotten in
the history of mankind. These incidents
took place under varied political,
economical and sociological conditions yet
they have one thing in common which is
mass massacre of Human beings.
Of all tragedy I remember, the Jews
Holocaust stands out unique, never in the
history of Mankind Genocide was carried
out on a particular community with such
intensity and frequency. Jews were killed
just because they were Jews, neither
because they did something wrong nor
because their properties were envied.
One can sense a huge degree of
parallelism between the Holocaust and the
Zoupi Genocide, which even after 19 long
years still haunts the People of Manipur in
General and the Kuki community in
particular. One such Parallelism is both the
tragedy trace back its genesis to the heart
of a Dictator, who probably to quench
an ego or enjoy the sufferings and servitude
of a fellow human or for some mere
political or economical objectives had
carried out such a massive atrocity.
Whatever be the reason genocide
is genocide and there cannot be any better
- Samuel Singsit
or worse victim, a victim is a victim. The
other aspect is the specificity to a particular
community, in Zoupi!s case, the Kuki
community.
Today the Kukis mourned and
remember the black September in yet a
different way, while the perpetrators roams
with impunity. It is even hard to swallow
because the incident took place right under
the nose of the Largest Democracy in the
world boasting of its determinations to
promote justice and fraternity. Flashing
back to 19 years before present, on this
very un fateful day Armed insurgents
intercept a group of Kuki Civilians of
Zoupi Village and butchered 90 people,
with their hands tied behind, in one single
day, women and babies included. The cold
reminiscence of the ugly tragedy still visits
the people of Manipur on this day every
year.
One is compelled to wonder what
possibly could be the reason the
perpetrators assorted to such an inhuman
act. Could it be a vengeance of an untold
Past incident? Could it be just one of those
ugly tactics to draw attentions for some
demands? Or could it be a show of
supremacy or Muscle power? There could
not be a better person than the very person
who masterminds the act to answer these
Questions which still floods the minds of
every one.
Having said that, the afterthought
of the perpetrators is still a mystery. Do

Who Will Remember You When You Die
Some people fear death too
much to even think about it. They say its
too morbid. But death is the one certain
thing in life, and it s everywhere around
us. A wise man prepares for death as
ardently as he prepares for life. This way,
when he dies, he would have lived a life
worth remembering long after his demise,
and not only by the people who knew
him personally. Long after his body rots
in the grave he would still touch the hearts
and lives of people who never knew him
or met him personally. Such would be his
legacy. But not all are fortunate enough
to live the life they would have wanted
because death came too soon and too
sudden. On the 13 th of September a
nation remembered as the lives of a
thousand of its own blood was cut
painfully short by the hands of the
adversary, unprovoked and unimagined.
Their lives were snuffed out, their dreams
brought to an abrupt end and their future
rendered non-existent just because they
happened to be a Kuki. And to this day,
those of us who live and bear that name
remember their deaths. We remember
why they are here with us no more and
we mourn their deaths. They have a legacy
we mourn and cherish at the same time.
In this way they occupy a hallowed place
in the hearts and minds of the people they
died for.
We cannot exchange places with
the dead and claim their place of honor.
But unlike them we have the chance, while
-Samuel Lamkholen Haokip
we still breathe, to affect our society in the
way we choose to. Whatever grand or petty
plans the dead have are now reposed in the
grave with their mortal earthly bodies. But
whatever plans we the living have are still
possible. Whichever way you intend to affect
the society can still come true. Will you leave
the society a better place than when you found
it, or will you make it worse? Or, like I had
said in an earlier issue of Lamhil, sometimes
it s not just the things we do that may
constitute wrongdoing, that there are times
when doing nothing itself is a wrongdoing.
Will you be guilty of non-participation?
On the 13 of last month we paid
our tribute to our martyrs who laid down
their lives on that awful day. I m sure all who
came felt the spirit of patriotism anew. Society
remembers and honors them because they
died. But now the society needs to remember
you because you lived. Because you did
something that made our society/nation a
better place than it was yesterday. Because
your children can dream bigger dreams than
the ones you inherited from your parents.
Because you contributed positively to the
brand image of our society. Because
everytime people remember you, you instill
the spirit of patriotism anew. So what legacy
will you leave behind when you die, or when
you leave this city? The dead have their place
in history and so do the living. And the living
will one day join the dead. What will people
tell others about you when you re gone? Who
will remember you when you die?

LAMHIL SEPTEMBER 2012 15
and what it means to forgive. I think that
the hardest people to forgive are the ones
who are the closest to you. If someone else
wrongs you, it is easier to forgive, because
you most probably don t expect much from
that person anyway. However, if someone
who is close to you, a friend or partner for
example, does something, which requires
forgiveness, then it means that they have
betrayed your trust to some extent. I think
that the level of trust breached determines
how easy it is to then forgive someone. I
think if someone made a genuine mistake
and this hurt you, then there is nothing to
forgive, but if someone intentionally betrays
your trust or does something even though
they know it will hurt you, then this makes
it much more difficult to forgive. Keep in
mind, hurting people often hurt other
people as a result of their own pain. If
somebody is rude and inconsiderate, you
can almost be certain that they have some
unresolved issues inside. They have some
major problems, anger, resentment, or
some heartache they are trying to cope with
or overcome. The last thing they need is
for you to make matters worse by
responding angrily.
Biblical Perspective of forgiveness .
I think, by remembering
where we stand, by meaning our words
when we say in our prayers each night
Forgive our trespasses* as we forgive those
that trespass against us. We are offered
forgiveness on no other terms. To refuse it
is to refuse God s mercy for ourselves. I
think that if God forgives us we must
forgive ourselves. Otherwise, it is almost
like setting up ourselves as a higher tribunal
than Him.
The willingness to forgive is a sign of
spiritual and emotional maturity. It is one
of the great virtues to which we all should
aspire. Imagine a world filled with
individuals willing both to apologize and
to accept an apology. Is there any problem
that could not be solved among people
who possessed the humility and largeness
of spirit and soul to do either or both
when needed? Darkness cannot drive
out darkness; only light can do that. Hate
cannot drive out hate; only love can do
that.
Some of the Bible verses, which
talk about the forgiveness, are placed
below.
Matthew 6:14-15 NIV
For if you forgive men when they sin
against you, your heavenly Father will also
forgive you. But if you do not forgive men
their sins, your Father will not forgive your
sins.
Matthew 18: 21-22 NIV
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, Lord,
how many times shall I forgive my brother
when he sins against me? Up to seven
times? Jesus answered, I tell you, not
seven times, but seventy-seven times.
Matthew 5:23-24 NIV
Therefore, if you are offering your gift
at the altar and there remember that your
brother has something against you, leave
your gift there in front of the altar. First
go and be reconciled to your brother; then
come and offer your gift.
Let !FORGIVENESS be a
guiding principle of one s life and let us
enjoy peaceful , physical and Spiritual,
environment.

OPINION
LAMHIL SEPTEMBER 2012 14
LET FORGIVNESS OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLE
Forgiveness, I think is the need of
the hour for strong and healthy society,
family, friendship and association involving
human relationship. If we accept the saying
that !No one is perfect then we also ought
to accept the fact that committing mistake
is a part of one s life and thus forgiveness
becomes essential principle of life. If there
were no forgiveness and God has to punish
for our each and every misdeeds, I hope,
today, no one would be here on this Earth.
Forgiveness is the
renunciation or cessation of resentment,
indignation or anger as a result of a
perceived offense, disagreement, or
mistake, or ceasing to demand punishment
or restitution.The Oxford English
Dictionary defines forgiveness as !to grant
free pardon and to give up all claim on
account of an offense or debt .
Forgiveness can be defined as the
foregoing of resentment or revenge when
the wrongdoer s actions deserve it.
Forgiveness is a very subjective theme and
everyone has there own idea on who should
and who should not be forgiven.
Forgiveness can encompass many different
things, from merely accepting someone s
apology to helping them to find there way
out of the situation they put themselves
in.When you forgive, you in no way change
the past - but you sure do change the future.
Forgiveness is a virtue of the brave. I can
forgive, but I cannot forget, is only another
way of saying, I will not forgive.
Forgiveness ought to be like a cancelled note
- torn in two, and burned up, so that it never
can be shown against one.
- James Doujapao Haokip
You will know that forgiveness has begun
when you recall those who hurt you and
feel the power to wish them well.
Forgiveness is a funny thing. It warms the
heart and cools the sting. To be a
Christian means to forgive the inexcusable
because God has forgiven the inexcusable
in The truth is, unless you let go, unless
you forgive yourself, unless you forgive
the situation, unless you realize that the
situation is over, you cannot move
forward.
I think, that to be able to
forgive others, you have to first be able
to forgive yourself. By this I mean that if
you feel guilty about something, you have
to be able to accept that you made a
mistake, but you also have to then carry
on and move forward. If you cannot
forgive yourself, you will constantly be
berate yourself and you won t be able to
leave the past behind. Of course, you have
to learn from the mistakes you made and
endeavor never to repeat them, but it s not
necessary to constantly berate yourself
over something that has already happened
and cannot be changed. Often, we are the
last people to forgive ourselves. In my
opinion, once you realize that you have
spent enough time making yourself feel
bad about something you have done, it
becomes clear that quite often, others have
long since forgiven you.
Forgiving others is a very
subjective and complicated process.
Everyone has their own set of morals and
ethics, which means that everyone has a
different view of what can be forgiven

LAMHIL SEPTEMBER 2012 OPINION
10
THE WORST THING TO HAVE IN COMMON
I had so much in common with a
girl. She can relate to almost every experience
and situation that I told her about. We had
the same taste in almost everything. We grew
up in the same locality and went to the same
high school. Of course, this alone makes us
just two among the thousands that passed
out from St. Mary s High in Churachandpur.
However, not many had a year break after
+2, which we did. We both went to Delhi
to prepare for an entrance exam. However,
we lasted only three months there and
returned home subsequently. Almost a year
later, we both failed our respective entrance
tests. We both hate DTC buses and had
avoided it completely at the cost of many
other luxuries. For you see, we emptied our
pockets almost entirely on auto fares. We
both were even hospitalized once; also due
to the same complain - gastritis.
We both preferred sugar-low tea
to special tea. Everybody loves black for a
shirt. So do we. But, we never had red and
yellow before. Again, everyone loves music.
So do we. However, there are few who like
AC/DC and GnR. We both have been their
fans, !Shoot To Thrill" being our latest
favourite then. I was surprised, and upset as
well because I love things, which I thought
girls hate. We both enjoyed Chetan Bhagat s
novel (5 point someone, the others suck) and
The Big Bang Theory (though I ve started
to dislike it lately). However, despite all our
common experiences and similar tastes, we
do not like each other enough to be more
than friends.
On the contrary, I had so little in
common with another girl. We grew up in
- Thet Thet Haokip
an entirely different world. She had never
been in my locality as I had never been in
hers. Environment had a crucial role in
shaping our psyche, personality and shape
esp. during our childhood. After all the
works of the environment, when we met
at college in Shillong, we were already very
different from each other. She was slim
and tall like all her siblings, while I was
bulky and short. God had given us free
will but not free choice of genes.
She is good in singing. So, she
often sang in churches and always during
our college outings. She even plays the
guitar herself# I have never sung solo in
church or anywhere. Simply because I can t
sing# My career as a singer had ended even
before it started. I was still young when
this incident happened. I was at home
playing a guitar, practicing the three chords
I knew. I sang a song matching the chords,
or so I thought. Then, an elder from the
church came home and found me
engrossed in that state. He remarked, !laa
ahi tah leh!" Since then, there was no
looking forward.
It was astonishing to discover how
two people can have so much differences
and so little in common. Change is said to
be the only thing that does not change.
Likewise, I find differences to be the only
thing common in all human beings.
However, despite all our differences, I
know one thing we have in common: we
don t like each other enough to be more
than friends, either!

LAMHIL SEPTEMBER 2012 KSOD ACTIVITIES
09
WHAT ARE WE FOR?
It was Sunday, 16 th September,
and in the dead of the night. A phone call
informing the Kuki Students Organisation
(Delhi) executives that Pa Soson, KWS
Gurgaon Secretary was received. He was
in a critical situation at AIIMS Hospital and
urgently needed blood donors. But those
who were with him at the hospital couldn t
give the exact time the donors should reach
nor were they sure if it can be done before
daybreak. But what was sure was that he
needed help. Immediately! So the KSO
Executives were in a dilemma as to what
to do. Should they take those willing
donors to the Hospital at four in the night
and make them wait till everything was
ready?
That would be a punishment for
those with the big hearts if the Patient
couldn t land a bed in the Emergency ward
because it would only be then possible to
donate blood for the patient. We waited
keenly for that to happen hoping the
influence of our dear supporting nurses at
AIIMS or that Pa Paolienlal Haokip letter
would be the life saver for the KWS
Gurgaon Secretary. So while we waited for
a concrete direction about the timing, we
dozed off as did those who were ready
to donate life.
Nine in the morning, a call from
the attendants at AIIMS was left
- Thangminlun Hangshing, Jt. Secy. North
unattended since there was no one awake.
Again at ten, repeated calls finally awoke
an executive. The executive searched
frantically for the list of those life savers.
A sleepy DU Prayer Cell leader handed
over the list much to the relief of those at
the hospital (He too apparently waited for
instruction from the hospital through the
night!).
Finally, those on the list started
receiving calls. It was possible that they
hadn t slept through the night and dozed
off with the dawn waiting for the direction
to go to the hospital. In such a situation, it
would be difficult waking them up and a
search would have to begin all over again.
Thankfully, nothing unfortunate as such
happened.
17 th September, close to 16 hours after
the first phone call, five young men walked
out of AIIMS Blood Bank with
satisfac tion in the pleasure of helping
someone they had never known before.
They were David Kipgen, Letkhogin
Kipgen, Ngamminthang Mate,
Seiminthang Touthang and Thangboilen
Haokip.
Kuki Students Organisation,
Delhi takes pride in those five gallant
young students. May their selfless act be
an inspiration for others!
WARRIORS IN A DISTANT DREAM
What has western civilization brought upon us? Obviously, we can say
wisdom and development. But we cannot forget that it has been the causative factors
for the attenuation of the old folklores, when we do was grasped the magnitude of
the inevitability in following the doctrines of western civilizations and cultures, keeping
aside the value of Christianity. Those who were born during the late 20 th century are
fortunate for they might have been the last immediate descendants who can rekindle
the folklore and happen to see the relics of our ancestors with their own eyes. Because,
those were the years our grandparents who are in their late octogenarians or more
happen to be the relics of our ancestors who could recount the legends of their
fathers and forefathers.
We all might have been told about the myth of our forefathers who had
chosen the red shawls and rifles instead of a home land. In the present scenario, we
might think that they were thoughtless of not choosing the home land. But the fact
was that, they were supreme warriors and hunters who only needs red shawls to
survived the cold winters and rifles to protect their hunting grounds which obviously
was their home land. Alexander the Great once said, I am not afraid of a pack of
lions lead by a sheep but I am afraid of a pack of sheep lead by a lion . We can say
that our forefathers were all lions-liked with a scattering lions-liked leaders (chieftains)
united with one purpose guarding their villages and hunting grounds. How did the
Anglo-Kuki war of 1917-1919 instigate the rebellion? Exhuming deeper for the clue,
we will only conclude that the British has a fear and already knew the efficiency of our
forefathers as a warriors and so on persuade them to fight in their fronts against
France during the First World War. They might act like savages as warriors and hunters
do, but the strongest strength of their might was only the reasons of unity and fraternity
among them.
The way of life our forefathers had live the way they hunt, the way they
dance, the way they sing, the way they recite poems, the way they grieved and mourned
for the death. We are all yearning to see them, but by now the folklores of our
ancestors only belong to stories at these times of our years. The western civilization
that the British had brought upon us only became the necessary evil for very much of
our younger generations. The generations of nowadays are only the specs in a shadow
of our ancestors with no more unity and fraternity, with a bunch of lions lead by a
sheep as it was in the context of Alexander the great. Yearnings for life that our
folklores had shimmers, I might want to do the same again and live the life of warriors
and hunters or live the life of savages or whatever the case it was during the past, these
wisdoms only belongs to legends and only in the forms of stories today. No matter
how much I want to take my part again among them, it only became a distant dream.
