CITY DIGGERS WOLLONGONG
A Tribute to the Don
(And it’s Not Bradman)
Illawarra audiences will have a unique
experience on Friday May 7th at the City
Diggers, when the Illawarra Folk Club presents
a tribute to one of Australia’s best songwriters,
Don Henderson.
Don Henderson died almost 20 years ago
but many of his songs are set in stone in the
repertoire of Australian folk singers and
bands.
Some of the Illawarra’s finest performers have
come together to present a concert of Don’s best
songs and to launch a double CD of 40 of them
that was part sponsored by the club.
Wongawilli will join forces with Alan Musgrove,
Mendala, The Backburners, Emma Hannah,
Denis McKay, Mark Gregory and Stuart Holt
in what should be a great tribute to one who
could hardly be called an unsung hero.
Don was born at Maidstone on the outskirts of
Melbourne and rates Tex Morton as his earliest
influence though in later years he drew his
musical inspiration from folk, country, blues,
jazz and even rock. His words came from the
Australian experience of union struggles for
safer work conditions and songs of justice
and peace. Many of these were sung at antiwar
rallies and this was a time when street
demonstrations were banned in Queensland.
‘Hendo’ had an incredible influence on this
period of Australian music and his songs are
still relevant and entertaining. This collection of
songs to be sung at the tribute forms a brilliant
social history of the time. The range of insights
extend from the powerful 'Come to the Meeting'
1979, 'The Prosecution' 1970, to the whimsical
'Basic Wage Dream' 1963, to the reflective 'The
Kids will Grow' 1968 to the philosophical 'What
makes the Grass Grow?' 1971
Don rode a motorcycle and he famously once
described himself as the mug lair who sang
with a Wooloomooloo Yank accent who had
probably only come to the concert to see if he
could, at the end of the evening, get one of the
younger women onto the pillion of his big black
motorbike.
Another of his famous quotes regarding
his politics was, ‘I'd been introduced to the
Communist Party. I asked my Dad what
communism was once and he told me it was
where everybody slept with each other's wives
and divided up the kids at Christmas time.’
The concert kicks off at 7.30pm with the usual
mystery muso and the facilities of the Club
are available. Come and catch a great bit of
Australia’s Musical Heritage.
The Ballpoint Penguins deliver delightful
3-part a cappella harmony and impeccable
dress sense. This neat West Australian
musical package conceals subversive wit and
wordcraft on domestic dysfunctions ranging
from Tupperware obsession to interpretive
whalesong--anticipate the unexpected. After
appearances at the National, Port Fairy and
Cygnet Folk Festivals, the Penguins have
waddled eastward with their second CD.
Penguins have acute hearing but no taste.
Damion Stirling has spent the better part
of 25 years in Woonona, NSW, enjoying the
ocean and the forest of the escarpment. He now
resides on the south coast. By trade a djembe
player, he has been performing and teaching
for over 15 years. More recently Damion has
turned his mind to writing, hands to guitar
and voice to song. A journey triggered by a
trip to Ecuador 3 years ago when he obtained
a classical guitar from an 80 year old luthier in
Banos. Damion plays Afro, Roots, Blues with
a Social Folk Conscience.
John Queripel was once the resident
Reverend at the Crown Street Uniting Church
before moving to Newcastle and then to the
Chapel by the Sea at Bondi. He was a regular
at the folk club 20 years ago and had a major hit
(at the Club) with, ‘I’d sooner have a Schooner
CITY DIGGERS WOLLONGONG
I Viaggiatori will be on tour from Canberra to
Brisbane to coincide with 2010 Italian Week
celebrations.
La Festa Della Repubblica is the 2 June and is
celebrated all around the world. I Viaggiatori
will be performing their passionate and emotive
take on Italian folk music and beyond and will be
bringing their new CD, Suitcase Serenata.
The CD Suitcase Serenata transports you to
forgotten fishing villages, moonlit olive groves,
and a hard life under a hot sun where women
sang melancholy songs of lost love, displacement
and revolution and fought hardship with a fierce
sense of humour.
I VIAGGIATORI’s debut album Suitcase
Serenata is a poignant and earthy homage to
Italy and the thousands of people who have
immigrated to our shores. Part travelogue,
part lament, part protest you will be captivated
by this intoxicating album peppered with
traditional and original roots music unearthed
and inspired by Italy and the Italo-Australian
diaspora.
Suitcase Serenata is a window into another time
and another place, with the sounds of folk, celtic,
gypsy, blues and Italian world music woven
expertly together by this impressive quartet.
There’s the vocals of Aria award winner Kavisha
Mazzella, well known in the Melbourne world
music scene for her original songs which slide
smoothly from heartbreaking passion to dreamy
high notes. Her rich sound is reminiscent of
Portuguese Fado queen Mariza, fused with the

social commentary of Luka Bloom. The clarinet
- sometimes haunting, sometimes joyful - is
played expertly by multi-instrumentalist Mark
Holder-Keeping; whilst the tremble of the
bouzouki is enough to make you melt under the
expert musicianship of Irine Vela from another
lauded aria-winning group -The Habibis. David
De Santi, one of the most well known names on
the folk scene in Australia – as accordian player,
band leader, folk historian and artistic festival
director – is bound to get your feet tapping to
his authentic yet fresh interpretations of Italy’s
world-famous tarantellas and waltzes.
Since forming in 2006 I VIAGGIATORI
(The Voyagers) have always had the ability
to take listeners on a vivid and sensory
journey. I VIAGGIATORI was formed by
Kavisha Mazzella to perform live with silent
documentary film ‘Dall’ Italia All’ Australia’
for the 2006 National Folk Festival in Canberra.
The film chronicles the voyage of the passenger
steam-ship Regina d’Italia (Queen of Italy) at the
turn of the century. Melbourne journalist and
author Tony De Bolfo stumbled on Dall’ Italia
All’ Australia’s existence through his research
for his book entitled In Search of Kings (Harper
Collins Publisher). Since that time the band has
performed the music to the film at festivals and
cinemas around Australia.
From the rugged coast of Napoli, to the rice
fields of the Po river valley, to the misty
mornings of Fremantle, there’s no need to board
a plane – although you may well be inspired
to - with I VIAGGIATORI’s charming debut -
Suitcase Serenata.
FESTIVAL
An attempt was made for the record at the last
festival in January. When David De Santi made
the original submission to the Guinness World
Records in London there was no record. About 3
weeks before the festival we discovered a record
had been set in Canada!
Around 220 participated in the Illawarra Folk
Festival attempt. All the proceeds went to local
charity Greenacres Disability Services. Johnny
Spillane, Neil Rowsell and Noon Dalton from
the Illawarra Folk Club presented a cheque
for $3200 to Natalie Adams, Tony Davis, Neil
Preston, Rachel Murphy, Patricia O’Neill,
A bit of info from that super newshound of all
April 5, 2010BEIJING, China (VIP NEWS)
-- Bob Dylan has cancelled plans to tour Asia
this month after he was reportedly refused
permission to play in China. Dylan had planned
to take his ‘Never Ending Tour’ to Beijing,
Shanghai, Taiwan, South Korea and Hong
government reportedly refused to grant the
Aviva Sheb’a is one of our esteemed members.
Here’s a short review she wrote of the Les Barker
Concert. “Les Barker is the funniest man in the
English-speaking world. No vulgarity, which
is a pleasant change for comedy of the past 30
years. Originally from Manchester, he lives in
Wales, though it looks as though he spends
most of time making people laugh throughout
Angledom if there's such a word. I have
NEVER laughed so much in my life! Every line
was funny and his delivery -- incredible. Dry,
English-understated, impeccably timed. Even
when you knew what was coming because it just
had to, the way he delivered the line, making
you wait exactly the right length of pause, made
it all the funnier. I bought a CD and booklet. He
had 78 books (no, not copies of the same one
-- different books) and had about 20 different
CDs for sale. He clearly has done this a long,
long time. May he keep on making people laugh
for a very long, happy time to come.
I've already read the book and am going to listen
to the CD a bit later. I daren't play it in the car!
Thank you for much for putting Les Barker on...
can hardly wait for next time.”
Thanks Aviva, I noticed a few people having
to be shovelled up off the floor at the end of
the concert and rest assured if he comes back
we’ll get him.
The old rapscallion turns out to be a football
tragic and is worried about the current
storm in Rugby League.
I'm so happy we have our news priorities
right
MELBOURNE STORM IN A TEACUP
There was mayhem down in Melbourne, when
the brown stuff hit the fan,
And the cry rang round the city: “BEWARE,
THE AUDIT MAN”.
At Melbourne Storm Headquarters, where hopes
had been unsinkable,
Someone, clandestinely, had done something
quite unthinkable.
From the pulpits of the NRL, the sermon had
been preached,
This dictum is enshrined in law -- THE CAP
SHALL NOT BE BREACHED.
I know this is unbelievable, but some naughty
Melbourne chap,
Has (I can hardly utter this) breached the
SALARY CAP.
What a football tragedy. The saints who play
the game,
(not for money, you understand) but for glory
and for fame,
And the chance to represent this great Nation
of Australia,
Are now tarnished with a coating of a Melbourne
cheating failure.
They’ve been stripped of minor premierships,
grand final victories,
This once great Rugby League club, now
battered to its knees,
By Supremo, David Gallup, who in happier
times, anoints
The more successful players, now denies them
future points.
First, blame must be apportioned. Find the
guilty, then
The witch hunt can commence -- who knew
what, and when?
Of course, the players didn’t know. The coach
was ignorant,
Of improper malfeasance. The board was
innocent.
News Limited knew nothing. Although these
salary capers,
Were a bit embarrassing, they sold a lot of
papers.
New South Wales and Queensland, naïve about
the South,
And football commentators, frothing at the
mouth.
Nothing else made headlines. The Icelandic
Volcano
Took a backseat in the news. The massive lava
flow,
And the dust cloud throughout Europe, a minor
interruption,
Compared to the Melbourne Storm, and NRL
disruption.
Who cares about Asylum Seeker, the Henry
tax report,
Tony Abbott, Kevin Rudd? It’s the SALARY
CAPPING rort
Out-headlining everything. Creating
indignation
In every sports mad Aussie. It’s the shaming
of a nation.
And when the dust has settled, and the blame
has been apportioned,
Slaps on the wrist all around, and some officials
cautioned.
Will all the culprits be revealed? Will we ever
know?
All I can say, in Melbourne now, teacups are
all the go.
Is John Spillane taking over the world.
That’s the question everyone is asking
since we revealed that renowned Irish
Musician John Spillane from County
Cork will be touring Australia in June and
playing at the Folk Club on June the 19th.
He will be supported by John Spillane from
County Cork (via Warilla) and his all star
John Spillane Band. To make matters worse
John Spillane won a medal at the Winter
Olympics. What is even more he won it
in the town of Whistler. (everyone knows
John Spillanes are famous for their whistle
blowing. Sounds like a take-over to me!
From our 2VOX FM co-ordinator ‘Blown
New to the 2VOX-FM Library
Each month a number of “Folk Music”
CDs are added to the VOX library – some
CDs are great, some are good, some are
mediocre and some are just plain awful!.
Each month I will endeavour to compile
a list of these, together with a review of
what I consider to be pick of the bunch.
Surprisingly, most of the promo
CDs received at VOX-FM are from
overseas – either Australian artists don't
see the value of having their work aired
on community radio or they can't afford
the distribution of promo CDs.
Pick of the Crop
Two CDs caught my attention- the first
is Bonnie Koloc's “Beginnings” and the
second is the Alrichs (Father and Daughter)
“Carry Me Home”.
I must have missed Bonny Koloc ( http://
www.bonniekoloc.com/) in the 60s, and
70s (my loss!). This CD is a retrospective
of her early work and it is great.
If you enjoy a sung well sung by a great
voice (in the realm of Joan Baez, Maddy
Prior and Judy Collins) this is a great
addition to your collection.
Our old favourites Jason and Chloe (and
awarded the National Film and Sound
"A Voice That Was Still". They wrote to
say “We were thrilled that this particular
CD won the award as the material is very
close to our hearts, and it was performed,
recorded, mixed and mastered in-house -
in our house and the house next door to
A note from Steve Keirl who brought out
the great Les Barker. “Greetings and thanks
to all who helped make Les feel most
welcome at their venues, who supported
his shows and who made his tour such a
success.
Your support at Alpaca farms, the National,
Allambie Heights, Sutherland, Illawarra,
Newcastle, Woy Woy, Albert Park in
Melbourne, The Folk Centre in Adelaide,
and the Top End Club in Darwin was just
great. To the organisers of those venues – a
special thank you!
Unfortunately Mr Barker’s plane is one of
many to be ‘on hold’ at present. ‘Have you
got any news of the volcano?’
I VIAGGIATORI will be at the folk club
on June 4th and is already receiving great
revues, well the CD is. Here is Seth Jordan’s
(From ABCs Limelight Magazine) review.
The Cd is called Suitcase Serenata (Black
Market Music BMM347.2)
“I Viaggiatori (The Voyagers) is a bit of an
Aussie world/folk supergroup. Formed in
2006 by veteran Italian/Australian singer/
songwriter Kavisha Mazzella to provide
a score for the silent film documentary
Dall' Italia All' Australia, the quartet also
features Greek bouzouki/mandolin player
Irine Vela (Habibis); accordion virtuoso
David De Santi (Wongawilli/Zumpa); and
clarinet/saxophonist Mark Holder-Keeping
(Cantolibre/Zumpa). With a charming
combination of Italian standards, original
songs by Mazzella and a touching version of
'Waltzing Matilda', this all-acoustic album
chronicles the hopes and memories of our
Italian community. An authentic, joyous
and well-performed musical travelogue.”
Our inimitable publicity guru Theresa
Gregory had a birthday on Mayday (happy
birthday Theresa) but she claims to have
discovered a rare disease which she claims
a lot of people in the Club have. It’s
'Cenosillicaphobia' = 'The fear of an empty
glass'. Now Graeme Morrison a renowned
Tippler but a dedicated Coopers drinker
claims it is “Cenosillicacooperphobia”.
As I don’t care about other people’s
glasses, just my own, I believe it is
“Mycenosillicacooperphobia”. There

always has to be one smartarse in the pack
and this time it’s Rod ‘Biggles’ Cork who
claims that the word is not applicable at
the folk festival as we have to (by law)
use plastic glasses which contain no silica.
There’s no doubt a little bit of attempted
erudition brings out the worst in people.
Here’s a report on Alistair Hulett’s Funeral
from his wife Fatima.
“ALISTAIR’S FUNERAL
This was held at the Linn Crematorium in
Glasgow on 5 February, 2010, followed by a
rousing reception at Langside Halls, where
Alistair’s great political hero, John Maclean,
held his rallies around the time of the First
World War.
Grateful thanks must go to all those
who helped organise and those who
contributed to such a wonderful send-off
for a much-loved man. Performers included
Dave Swarbrick, Alasdair Roberts, Adam
McNaughtan and David Lindsay. Graeme
Cumming was an eloquent and sincere
celebrant, while other speakers included
Alison Hulett, John Hamill and Jimmy
Ross. Special thanks go to Beth Armstrong
who filmed the service and to the hundreds
of people who came from far and wide to
farewell Alistair so fittingly.
The reception at Langside Halls was
spectacularly organised, decorated
and catered for by the Govanhill Baths
Community Trust. Thank you to all the
musicians who performed, including Rory
McLeod, The Swing Guitars, Mick West,
Gavin Livingstone, Nancy & James Fagan,
and to all those who spoke so sincerely and
movingly about the influence Alistair had
on so many lives.”
Our resident autoharp player ‘Blown
from 18th to 27th May in California
at the California Autoharp Gathering.
There is some criticism that he has been
influencing some of the younger and more
impressionable members of the club such
as Graeme Morrison to take up the dreaded
instrument. Listening to them both play I
am starting to be more favourably disposed
to accordions and ukuleles.
