CITY DIGGERS WOLLONGONG
From the hills behind Mullumbimby in NSW
comes singer songwriter Lou Bradley. After an
ARIA nomination for her critically acclaimed
debut album, Lou Bradley will be sure to grab
your attention. She will share her most down
to earth and intimate of life stories through
song. Quoted as being "the most intelligent
Australiana since Sara Storer" Polly Coufous,
Weekend Australian.
Then there’s Boogie and Crawford who
are an Illawarra-based Blues and Folk Duo
playing authentic acoustic blues and folk
music popularised by the likes of Sonny
Terry, Brownie McGhee and Big Bill Broonzy.
Cary ‘Boogie’ Buecher is an accomplished
acoustic and electric blues guitarist with
over 30 years playing experience. Cary uses
a claw hammer picking technique to recreate
the authentic Delta blues sound. Matt ‘Texas’
Crawford is a young, up-coming musician
impressing audiences whenever he performs.
Matt is a multi-instrumentalist specialising in
blues harp and bass guitar. Matt is the duo’s
vocalist. Boogie & Crawford also incorporate
a dollop of Ragtime and Country music into
their repertoire.
The third act will be Buck and Deanne (Paul
Buckberry and Deanne Dale) from Newtown.
Buck & Deanne’s sound draws deep on the roots
of country, rockabilly, folk and blues music.
They sing songs of yearning, hurt and hope,
about a place - like life - where joy and sorrow
walk hand in hand. Together they collaborate on
Buck's original material as well as placing their
own nifty arrangements on the classics.
Gilbert Whyte then adds to what is shaping as
a great night. Gilbert began writing songs and
established himself as a singer songwriter in
the intimate musical community of Fremantle
in WA. Gilbert played at every bar and Cafe
in town for years before an urge for more took
him across the continent to the eastern states.
With his fingerpicking ballads and cheerful
storytelling style, Gilbert is quickly earning
a reputation for musicianship and heartfelt
performance.
Now living on the east coast, Gilbert is
performing frequently in every and any venue
from Vic to Qld.
Our final act is Interplay. Interplay are well
known club members Alan and thalia Musgrove.
Alan and thalia have been performing together
since 1992. They have melded social realist
poetry with traditional folk, country and jazz
to produce Interplays with the passion of a
Greek tragedy and the lightness of an Irish jig.
Interplays are a coming together of disciplines
in a completely original way which will both
haunt and confront as it paints a picture of
contemporary Australia.
Their landmark CD Interplay was released in
1996 to critical acclaim and as a testament to
its power the Melbourne Age’s music critic
remarked “I wanted to listen to a CD, I didn’t
want to be punched in the face.” Since then
they have been composing new work with a
broadened multi-cultural perspective. Subjects
include everything from the ethnic gambling
clubs of Melbourne to the water crisis and its
effect on rural Australia.
thalia has been performing her poetry, largely
derived from her urban environment, since the
1970s. Her poems have been published widely in
anthologies both nationally and internationally.
She has read her work on radio, in libraries,
prisons, pubs, clubs and festivals throughout
Australia. A large collection of her work from
the 70s to the 90s was published in thalia- New
and Selected Poems in 1998.
Still only $10 for club members ($15 others)
CITY DIGGERS
WOLLONGONG
It’s Friday night instead of Saturday Night
for the second Folk Concert of July at the City
diggers Club on the 16th. Once again it’s a five
pack with five exceptional acts from different
genres ‘struttin’ their stuff’.
Helen Begley comes from Melbourne and has
earned her reputation as a talented and respected
Melbourne songwriter, musician and teacher.
Best known as the main songwriter with her
former band Milk, she has also written original
material for popular independent artists Carl

Pannuzzo, Penny Larkins and Jody Galvin. She
has recently begun collaborating with Nashville
published lyricist, Clint Land. This year, Helen
released her first solo album "The Bride",
and won The Melbourne Ukulele Festival’s
Songwriting Competition. She’s travelled
Australia playing to audiences in country towns
and capital cities and her work has been played
on ABC and community radio stations across
the country.
The second act is South of the Big Smoke, a
four-piece outfit from the Northern Suburbs that
play acoustically grounded songs with a focus
on melodies, rhythms, vocal harmonies and
occasional bouts of flute, sax and harmonica.
The band includes John Nichols, Phil Preston
and Wolfgang Kloger from the band Mendala
who have teamed up with Dorothy Ivery from
the Scarlett O'Hara's. Their mostly original
songs are influenced by indie pop to folk,
blues, roots and rock. ‘South of the Big Smoke’
formed early in 2010 and aim to release a debut
CD by mid 2010.
Sydney musician Pave Leclair is the third
of the five. "With stirring lyrics and trance
inducing melodies, Pave Leclair steals your
consciousness away. He has just released his
debut album titled "Hello silver moon" and his
single "They won't find us tonight" has been
appearing on the ABC Rage program. Pave
Leclair is a modern- day musical poet with a
unique guitar finger-picking style. His songs
are filled with meaning, leaving your soul
feeling nurtured."
Then there’s Steven "Steph" Miller. Steph
started playing guitar at the age of six in
the NSW country town of Goulburn. After
years of exploring different styles, including
fingerpicking, bluegrass, American acoustic
blues and art rock, he came across different
folk styles from England, Ireland, Scotland
and Brittany.
Following solo and duo work in Sydney, he
joined political rock band The Scream on bass
and contributing songs, playing the pubs
and clubs for many years before returning to
acoustic guitar and simpler songs. He then
joined Sydney political Celtic rock band Roaring
Jack playing accordion and mandolin and
contributing songs.
He has played on many other artists' records,
including those for Paul Kelly, Dave Steel,
Peter Baxter, Perry Keyes, Bernie Hayes, The
Whitlams, Peter Miller, Perpetual Ocean, Desert
Boot and more... playing everything from tin
whistle to Hammond organ. 2009 saw the
recording and independent release of Brickwork
with his bandThe Winter Station, marking a
progression from Strange Sea to a more cohesive
"band" sound.
Finally there’s booze and blues exponent Big
Erle’ from the Northern Suburbs. Big Erle is
Simon Leaman and his band. Fresh from a
highly successful set of performances at the
recent Snowy Mountains of Music Big Erle
is fast gaining a reputation in both the folk
and blues fields. His strong vocal overlays his
fingerpicking, slide/lapslide/acoustic guitar
style over his band- Drew Peard (bass),Damion
Stirling and Kade Lidden on percussion. Big
Erle tells the stories of Wollongong, the land
between the escarpment and the sea.
And of course it remains the one low price for
admission $10 members $15 others. All facilities
of the club are available.
e FOLK NOTES e
A very healthy contingent of members
ventured down on the bus to the snowy
Mountains of Music Festival admirably
artistically directed by Dave de Santi. There
was some discussion as to the state of some
members’ health when they got off the bus
late on the Monday Night. There seemed to
be more than a small number of republicans
celebrating ‘er of ‘Er Usband and ‘Er’s”
birthday on the bus on the way back. It
would be rude of course to name names.
One who did suffer pain and injury was
Robyn Jackson who slipped on some
ice and broke her ankle. Things looked
particularly grim for a while, what with
talk of operations and steel pins etc. Pleased
to say at last report the op might not be
necessary but she’s likely to be encumbered
with plaster for quite some time- So no
dancing unless it’s that horizontal folk
dancing.
Another who covered himself with esteem
was that elegant English Gentleman (no!
he is not a Pommy Bastard as an unkind
member frequently referred to him), Martin
Hopkins. Martin was much appreciated by
many of the more matronly ladies whom he
constantly escorted over the black ice and
dangerous snow drifts. Who knows how
many broken ankles and toes he saved.
But the best was this photo of the littlest
Folkie. Ann Lehmann is introducing Minna
to the world of music and stagecraft early
in life. Eva Westacott took the pic and
captured the astonishment and wonder that
only the very young express in their eyes.
The picture was taken at the finale concert
and the band is Sam De Santi’s Big Snore
Hammers
And here’s some folk who really enjoyed
themselves and weren’t shy about writing
to let us know.
I am sending this e-mail to thank you and
acknowledge the enormous amount of effort,
work, time and organization you put in to make
Poets at 2010 Persisher Snowy Mountains of Music
Peter Mace, Jan Lewis, Nimity (winner of the Snowy Poetry Cup), Carol Heuchan,
Gregory North, Jim Kelly, Derek Watson, Zondrae King, Russell Hannah
our weekend so fantastic. We had a great time,
rushing from one venue to another so as not
to miss anything!! The music, the poetry, the
people and the ambience and the fun was terrific.
I am sure you feel quite exhausted today! Hope
your voice is coming back but, from us, thanks a
million. Cheers, Annette and Bob Riches
Annette for the first time read her fine
poetry in public and I’m sure we’ll see much
more of her at Poets breakfasts etc.
* * * * * * * * * * *
East Corrimals Zondrae King is one of our
fine band of Illawarra Poets. Naturally she
was down at the Snowy Festival. While the
rest of us were drinking beer and generally
misbehaving during the finale I noted
Zondrae sitting in the corner pencil and
paper in hand. She was, in fact, writing
a poem and has since sent it to me Here
it is:
I sat there in the mountains with my pencil in
my hand
and thought of all the people who I met on this
weekend.
The festival was excellent, the poetry was
grand
and of the people I have met, I hope I’ve made
a friend.
The snow was deep when we arrived, still snowy
when we went
but every day the sun was warm. Conditions
heaven sent.
With music brought from many styles ringing
in my ear
I know I will be eager to come back again next
year.
The host at every venue gave a welcome to us
all
the volunteers, musicians helping us to have
a ball.
The childrens’ entertainers in their very special
way
turn boring into, oh such fun, amusing with
their play.
I have watched some of my favourites and
listened to some new
and every act with it’s own sound, I recommend
to you.
The organizers should feel proud. My thanks
to them I send.
The only fault I find with it is – we’ve come to
the end.
All the best, with thanks to all the workers
for a great weekend at the 2nd Snowy
‘Blown Away’ Denis Mckay, autoharp
enthusiast, folk club committee person,
Vox FM presenter has just been appointed
a member of the Vox board. Whereas he’s
not officially representing us I’m sure he
will be keeping an eye on our interests.
More to the point however is that he and
fellow autoharpoonist, Janneke Burrell
went to the California Autoharp Gathering
last month (CAG).
Here’s a report that Janneke sent in:-
“It doesn't seem possible that 3 weeks
have already passed since we went to the
California Autoharp Gathering and the
enjoyment of those music-filled days in the
hills above Fresno...
Since I got back, I've been asked several
times what CAG was like. My short answer

is that it was one of the most fantastic,
frustrating and at the same time most
satisfying events I've ever been to.
Of course there was jamming, that’s always
fun. And finally matching faces to names
that through Cyberpluckers had become
increasingly familiar, and the warmth
and friendships that spring up. There
were new things to learn, new songs,
new ideas on how to share music, how to
play, suggestions for improving singing,
improving performances, new styles, even
new instruments.
Music was everywhere. Because of
the incessant and unseasonable low
temperatures, it seemed that every indoor
room that was open to us was graced by
at least several warmth-seeking musicians
happily playing favorite songs or perhaps
practicing for an upcoming performance.
This often started early morning, at small
breaks during the day, then start again
with gusto after tea until one and two in
the morning, when the last people standing
reluctantly admitted that they had to stop
for a few hours sleep. In the morning they
would then reassemble right after breakfast
to start all over again.
I have never seen so many enthusiastic,
energetic and talented people in one
place.
There were other things to do, too, like
visiting the female monastery with it's
beautiful gardens and temple, swimming
in the pool (if you were game enough to
enter the freezing water), and the main
attraction of browsing through Todd's
Petting Zoo. I hadn't realized how many
species of musical instruments there are
- Like dulcimers of all shapes and sizes,
autoharps, whistles, guitars and antique
stringed instruments, accordions, and
several instruments I don't even know the
names of or able to describe. One particular
instrument was in the form of an autoharp
with piano keys mounted on top, called a
dolceola and played fantastically by Andy
Cohen.
Another CAG feature was Pete d'Aigle's
Autoharp Repair Workshop. Pete somehow
managed to hold conversations with several
people at a time while simultaneously
repairing or working on someone's harp.
Whether the questions are one Pete heard
1,044 time or not, he answered it completely
and always with an infectious kind of
charm.
I actually ordered a new handmade
autoharp from Pete. It won't be ready for
about 4-5 months though.
It would be hard to pick a highlight of the
weekend, there was the musical humor
of the Canote Brothers, Ron Wall's jaw
dropping autoharp virtuosity, Roz Brown's
cowboy and maritime songs, Ann Norris
and Karla Armstrong's inspirational talents
(and my room mates at the Ranch), and
many more. And no way could I leave out
Bryan Bowers, who's presence and musical
talents was everywhere.
So, what was frustrating?
It was the sheer number of interesting
and useful workshops and performance
concerts. Invariably, going to one meant
passing up one or two others equally as
interesting.
The food was great and the "food line" at
each meal ran smoothly. We sat at rows
of long tables and it didn't matter where
you sat or with whom you sat next to, the
friendliness, company and conversations
were great. Well not much more I can add
except that I had a great time.
Cheers Janneke
Those of you with long memories (at least
about 6 weeks or so, which is considerably
longer than the 3 seconds possessed
by goldfish) will remember the Don
Henderson Tribute concert that we had
in early May. The club contributed to the
production of the CD as we have to many
other archival and tribute recordings in the
past. Anyway if you missed it here is SMH
reviewer Bruce Elder’s review of the CD.

The Songs of Don Henderson
(Shoestring)
In the hierarchy of Australian folk, Don
Henderson is an iconic figure who,
although he died in 1991, is considered
by many as the closest this country ever
came to producing a singer-songwriter of
the calibre of Woody Guthrie.
The reason is simple. Henderson was no
great craftsman. He didn't have a great
voice and wasn't a particularly good guitar
player. But he did write a substantial
body of "news" and contemporary "social
commentary" songs.
Think of the wry and Guthrie - like
talking blues of Talking Mt lsa, about the
miners' strike. Or the melancholy Westgate
Bridge Disaster,a swinging attack on the
incompetence that led to the collapse of
the infamous bridge. He never deviated
from his passionate support for unionism,
anti-war activism and belief in the decency
of manual labour.
Recently, a disparate group of left-wing
organisations and individuals- notably
the Queensland Folk Federation, Brisbane
Labour History Association, Illawarra
Folk Club, the CFMEU - have worked to
preserve Henderson's legacy.
This double CD, containing 40 songs,
comprises 20 original recordings and 20
of Henderson's songs recorded by such
Aussie folk luminaries as Gary Shearston
(Put a Light in Every Country Window),
Declan Affley (Rake and Rambling Man)
and Danny Spooner (It's On).
This is an important piece of Australian
folk history. Henderson deserves to be
remembered.
Another new CD out is ‘Balance’ by
Melbourne’s Bruce Watson. Bruce was at
the Snowy Festival and has appeared at
the club and our festivals on a number of
occasions.
‘Balance’ is a mix of 14 inspiring, humorous
and thought-provoking songs written over
the last few years. From the witty Rules of
English and the quirky How to Tune the
Ukulele through some lyrical pieces to a
string of powerful ballads with eminently
singable choruses. A highlight is a rerecording
of Bruce’s Edison phonograph
song together with Tasmanian elder
Ronnie Summers, Fanny Cochrane Smith’s
great great grandson. Cost $25. Bruce
has a new website Check it out at www.
NEW FOLK CLUB
MEMBERS
New members of the Folk Club this month
are Ken Barbour, Michael Malherbe &
Karen Miles and Felicity Yan.
Welcome to them all and we hope to
see them at some of our excellent line
up of concerts. While on the subject of
membership our fees are due again and half
of our members have not chucked in their
‘freight’- $15 singles, $20 family. Now this
doesn’t mean that you are late, but this is a
pre-emptive strike- (remember them), and
is aimed at preventing you from becoming
unfinancial.
* * * * * * * * * * *
Now here’s something to take note of!
Traditionally Blue the Shearer always
pays last and has to send a bit of verse as
an atonement for his wickedness. Well the
old powitt has coughed up early. Not only
that but he has sent his apology for being
late in case he is, which he’s not and he’s
sent it in early. You’d better rejoin soon or
we’ll make you write a poem too. Anyway
here’s what Blue said:
Bugger me, I’m late again,
I’ll get it in the neck,
Please forgive me once again,
and please accept my cheque.
This year, I’ll be early,
It’s my new year resolution,
I’ll send it in early June,
to save me more confusion.
I’ve set the date in concrete,
no more procrastinating,
I want to stay a member,
and thanks a lot, for waiting.
* * * * * * * * * * *
While on the subject of the old rapscallion
he’s become quite a classicist of late
and taken to reading and acting out
the great Bard's work. The resident
Censor approved until he started just
doing the rude bits. (Hope he never
takes a liking to Chaucer) Anyway the
influence is obvious in his latest poem.
It's hard to emulate the Bard,
To use his rhymes for modern times,
But here's a sample of his example.
And if it causes too much pain,
I promise not to try again.
MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
In a ‘Hamlet’ named Canberra, (not part of
New South Wales)
A tragedy, or comedy, let’s call it ‘Winter’s
Tales’
Is being put together. Rehearsals soon to
start.
And it’s yet to be decided, who will play the
leading part.
Kevin Rudd, incumbent star, is favoured for
the role,
But Tony Abbott, ruthless foe, is reaching for
that goal.
Between the Rudd and Abbott houses, much
blood is soon to flow,

And in the wings, a Julia lurks, who’d like to
have a go.
What the play’s about, is yet to find a firm
direction,
But I think I’d tend to hazard, that a Federal
Election
Could well be the central theme, along with
romance, and some terrors,
Or it could well end up, as a ‘Comedy of
Errors’.
Modern times would be portrayed. The super
profits tax,
Would need to be included to mirror current
facts.
The mining giants, be written in. their role
would be a biggy,
And I suspect, when casting, there would be a
part for ‘Twiggy’.
One scene I’d like to see portrayed, is ‘The
Taming of the Shrew’
But as to who would fill that role, I wouldn’t
have a clue.
And to forecast who would get it, I would not
be game,
But in the current climate, she’d achieve a
lasting fame.
Not all would be smooth sailing, for there,
behind the scenes,
Lurks the sinister figure of Bob Brown, of the
Greens.
He’s been there right from the start, prepared
to grab the light.
He shows no sign of fading, this is his ‘Twelfth
Night’.
Wayne Swan would have to get a part. It looks
like he is stuck
With the role of Shylock, when he’d much
rather Puck.
There should be a teenage heroine, preferably
with a yacht.
They asked young Jessica Watkins, but she said
she’d rather not.
Should there be a scene somewhere, a subplot
sort of thing,
With Tony Abbott in his bed, where he begins
to sing,
Waking from a nightmare, with a hideous
piercing scream,
“Won’t someone deliver me from this
‘Midsummer Night’s Dream”?
Will the press unleash a ‘Tempest’, regardless
of the cost?
Will the headline be, Tony Abbott ‘Loves that
Labor Lost’?
Or will the hero, Kevin Rudd, announce, at
the final bell,
That, in his opinion, ‘All’s Well that ends
Well’?
Shakespeare is alive and well. Some liberties
were taken
In this new scenario. Some will be quite
shaken
At my attempts to find a mark, take aim, and
try to strike it.
But you can take my efforts, and mark it ‘As
you like it’.
The plot could do with editing. Some polishing,
some buffing,
But Canberra in the end, is ‘Much ado about
Nuffing’.
I’m reliably informed by Dave de Santi that
June is International Accordion Month.
Hr reckons the Smithsonian Institute have
declared it so. I don’t think anyone would
want to have a whole month of accordions
but in case he’s right here’s a bit of info
about them.
This diverse instrument spans across
musical genres and is included in
Portuguese, American, Irish, Polish and
Hispanic musical traditions, among
others
Often refered to as a one-man-band
(because it needs no accompaniment)
or a squeezebox, the accordion was first
patented in Vienna, Austria in the early
19th century and is classified as a freereed
aerophone. While used in traditional
European, American and South American
folk music, the accordion was also played
in popular music of the 1900-1960s, a
period of time known as The Golden Age
of the Accordion.
