new design from Reg Mombassa
Reg Mombassa designer of the festival guitar
figurine logo has kindly allowed the festival to
select another piece of his artwork for use on the
2010 Festival T-Shirt.
The artwork was originally used for the London
version of the stage play We Will Rock You with
the theme song from Queen. The text has been
adapted to 'FOLK YOU' and a violin head in
place of the guitar head.
It will be a unique collectors item especially if
you appreciate Reg's work.
They will be available at the Folk Club Concerts
Folklorist Warren Fahy writes. “As many
of you know, my Australian Folklore Unit
If you would like to assist this project I would
the mistake of calling him an Icon when
I introduced him at the ‘Curse of Verse’
not one of the 50 people who were there then
you should feel deprived.
QUAMGULARBUTTGIRALAMOSAURAS
Four palaeontologists, way out west, were looking
for some bones,
Amongst the rocky outcrops, the sand, and
weathered stones.
‘Twas hot akubra weather. With lips and noses
zinced,
They hoped to find some evidence of beasts, now
long extinct.
They found some ancient fossils, but they weren’t
too hyped because,
The bones were brontosauruses, and common
dinosaurs.
Palaeontologist number one, was feeling pretty
down,
When he kicked a pile of rubble heaped upon the
ground.
There, in the scattered rubble, was a peculiar
looking stone,
He picked it up, examined it, and saw a fossil
bone.
Excitement flashed across his face. “I know what
this is from.”
He shouted to his colleagues: “It’s the knee bone
of a quam.”
“A Quambone, eh! How interesting. I’ve only
read about it.”
Said palaeontologist number two. “I sincerely
doubt it.
Let me have a look at it.” and he was heard to
mutter:
“This isn’t from a quam at all. It’s the thigh
bone of a butta.”
“Yes. It’s definitely a Buttabone. I’m sure you
all agree.
See that tiny smear of butta here, as clear as
clear can be?”
Said Palaeontologist number three: “Your
claims are but a sham.
This fossil is a shin bone, and it’s from a
Girilam.”
“A Girilambone. What a joke.” Said
Palaeontologist four.
It’s clear to me that none of you really know
the score.
You’re just trying to impress me with all this
palaent jargon.
This is patently the backbone of a long extinct
gulargam.”
“A Gulargambone!” Sneered the other three,
combined in their disbelief.
Then Palaeontologist number one, the self
appointed chief.
Said: “I don’t admit that I am wrong, but we
can’t all be right.
Unless we find a compromise, we’ll be arguing
all night.”
“Let’s combine our expertise. We’re all in search
of fame
By making some discovery. It’s the nature of
the game.
Alright. We don’t know what it is. But let’s pick
up the pieces,
There’s no one here but us four. Our collective
thesis
Will highlight our discovery, and the fame that’s
waiting for us.
I suggest we call our find a QUAM-GULAR-
BUTT-GIRALAM-osauras.
The others were astounded. “That’s magnificent.
Colossal.
There’s nothing like discovering a brand new
ancient fossil.”
They were right. The media loved it. The
headlines screamed in chorus.
“DISCOVERED BY A BRILLIANT TEAM
-- QUAM-GULAR-BUTT-GIRALAMosauras.
Recognition followed. Fame was theirs to take,
And only you and I know friends, that this claim
was a fake.
Still if you should visit Quambone, or by
chance, be driving through
Buttabone, Gulargambone, and Girilambone
too,
And you want to know how they were named
and reached the heights of glory.
No need to wonder any more, not now you’ve
heard this story.
BLUE -- the shearer
27/11/09
e e e e e e e e e
We were thinking maybe having some
haggis as an entrée at the great tripe night
at the festival but apparently we need a
farkaler and there is a shortage of them
in the Illawarra. Tony Konjowski sent me
this information that he gleaned on his
recent trip to the Highlands. Farkaling by
the way should not be confused with that
fine old Aussie sport of Farnarkling. Which
is described hereunder and was invented
by John Clark.
"In essence, Farnarkeling is engaged in by
two teams whose purpose is to arkle, and
to prevent the other team from arkeling,
using a flukem to propel a gonad through
sets of posts situated at random around the
periphery of a grommet. Arkeling is not
permissible, however, from any position
adjacent to the phlange (or leiderkrantz) or
from within 15 yards of the wiffenwacker
at the point where the shifting tube abuts
the centre-line on either side of the 34
metre mark, measured from the valve at
the back of the defending side's transomhousing."
Farkaling is a method of catching haggis, a
revered and ancient species indigenous to
Scotland. Haggis is a popular food enjoyed
during traditional Scottish festivals such as
Hogmanny and Burns Night. The two subspecies
of Haggis are the Greater Spotted
and the Lesser Spotted. The Lesser Spotted
may be found mainly in the Lowlands of
Scotland. Its diet is primarily vegetarian
consisting of barley, wheat and oats during
the summer months and winter greens
during the colder weather, often to the
frustration of local farmers.
The Greater Spotted Haggis is found
mainly in the Scottish Highlands. It is
shy and nocturnal. It prefers the habitat
of mountains, rivers and streams seeking
refuge in holes along river banks feeding
on insects, worms, grubs and small fish.
The Haggis is a creature with poor flying
skills and a preference for sheltering holes
and crevices, known as Nesties. Due to
their reclusive nature a precise and timehonoured
technique for capturing them
has evolved. The most effective way to
entice the Haggis out of the Nestie is to
Farkal it. The required attire for Farkaling
is the traditional Highland dress consisting
of a kilt. The Farkaler is equipped with
a Farkaling Stick, which is long with a
feather adorning the tip. The Farkaler
twists his Farkaling Stick in a clockwise
direction brushing gently against the
Haggis. The Haggis, pleased with this
sensation is lulled into a state of semiconciousness.
The Farkaling Stick is then
gently withdrawn enticing the Haggis to
follow it our of the Nestie. As the Haggis
emerges from the hole it is revived by the
cool evening air and - due to its position
relative to the Farkaler receives a clear
view up the Farkalers kilt and promptly
passes out.
I hear Monty , our resident incomprehensible
Scotsman is Willing to lead a Farkaling
expedition.
From Brian Grayson- “Lesley Hale died
on 8 October 2009 in Edinburgh at the
age of 62. I knew Lesley in 1964-65 when
she passed through Sydney - she sang at
the Folk Attick and on Dave Guard's TV
show 'Dave's Place'. She also sang on one
of the 'Some Like it Folk' concerts at the
Sydney Town Hall in 1964. She returned
to Scotland, and enjoyed a long singing
career as a soloist and with the band 'Bitter
Withy'.”
Here’s one for the Diary from the legendary
Phyl Lobl.
‘SINGING THE SOUTH’
‘Singing The South’ is a musical presentation
that explores the growth of the Illawarra.
The story is told through songs, wry
comment and images. The seventeen songs
range widely in style, feel, and topic and
were written by Phyl Lobl a songwriter of
wide experience in Folklore and music who
gathered information from local sources .
Experienced singers capable of singing
the inside of a song bring the times
alive. Talented accompanying musicians
add texture and musical depth to the
melodies.
Images,many obtained from the Pilot’s
Cottage files offerglimpses of the past which
deepen understanding and appreciation
of place.
The topics include a round ‘Khantarinteree’
which is the Wodi Wodi name for the
Blowhole,a ballad poem ‘Coast Ghost ’
which might shiver your spine, a lyrical
honouring of the Illawarra in
‘Between The High Place And The Sea’,the
story of ‘The Butter Track’and an off shoot
of that industry the story of ‘Daisy’, Kiama’s
decorated cow.
PRESIDENTS
REPORT 2009
The year 2009 has again been a good year
for the Club. Our club concert numbers
have improved, have been consistently
better than 2008 and have consistently
hovered between 50 and 70. These numbers
have held up even during winter which has
traditionally been a bad time for us.Whereas
in the past we have relied heavily on the
ubiquitous Raffle to break even, this year
it has more likely to have been the icing
on the cake.
Part of our charter is to present quality folk
acts to our members and provide Illawarra
venues for our local and imported groups
In this I believe we have fulfilled our
obligations to our aims and objectives in a
highly effective way.
The first half of the year saw a strong
contigent of well known performers visit
the club. Our old mate Jez Lowe and Kate
Bromley from the UK paid us another visit,
The accomplished Nano Stern from Chile,
The ever popular Beez from Germany, Paul
Ubana Jones from NZ, The Alan Kelly Band
and Colum Sands ensured that our OS
contingent was varied and brilliant. We also
had house concerts for that Great folklorist
from the UK Martin Wyndham Read and
NZ collector and songwriter Phil Garland.
From around Australia we have presented
‘Pete Hawkes from Newcastle, Fergusson
from the Blue Mountains as well as the
old rapscallion Blue the Shearer also from
the mountains, Kazband from Melbourne,
Jan Preston from Sydney, Alan Blackshaw
from Nowra, The Lurkers from Kangaroo
Valley, Gary Tooth From the highlands,
‘Geoffery Graham from Ballarat,’, Jeannie
Lewis, Rachel Dillon, Penny Larkins,
Bronnie Ware, Doc Jones Lecherie Band,
Rebecca More, all from Sydney and of
course the 8 piece Celtic Band, Humbug
from Canberra, as were Simone Olding and
Craig Dawson. Also in this list were Daniel
Champagne from the South Coast, and Pat
Drummond and Karen Lynne from the Blue
Mountains.
The rich depth of Folk Performers in the
Illawarra were well represented in our
concerts- Emma Hannah and the Silver River
Band, Perla Aura, ‘The Scarlet O’Haras,
Rick Caballo, ‘Penny Hartdgerink’ ‘Blue the
Shearer,’ ‘No Such Thing,’ ‘Wongawilli,’’
Pete Bennett and Steve James, Maurie
Mulheron’ ‘Zompa’ ‘Big Snore Hammers,’
AZ-I-AM, Double Decker Dave, Nothing
But Jam and John Broomhall.
Alan Musgrove and his Watsername Band
launched his latest CD at the club in May
and we held a very successful tribute to Pete
Seeger at the Club also in May.
Another of our activities were the four free
lunchtime concerts that we put on in the Art
Gallery in November this year. These were
well received and our audiences ranged
from 35-60. I have no doubt these will be
regular events on our calendar. The Art
Gallery was very happy with them too.
Oh! And Folk in the Foothills was aqlso
our moswt successful and for the first time
since its inception seven years ago it made a
small profit. It was a great line-up with Ted
Egan back, Jim Haynes, Ami Williamson,
Jason and Chloe,Doc Jones, John Broomhall,
Wongawilli, Scorba and Wongawilli among
others.
I almost forgot the great day we had on
Feb 28th when we raised over $1500 for the
victims of the Victorian Bushfires.
Sadly we lost three of our esteemed club
members through the year. Our first life
member, Ann Fox died after a period in a
nursing home down the coast. Ann, who
was for many years president of the club
will be commemorated in a memorial
concert at the Festival. Bill Carwardine a
long time member and a living link with
Henry Lawson also passed away in Wrights
Beach and Dave Cartledge our treasurer for
some tears died of cancer on the Sunshine
Coast. Our condolences go to thew families
of Ann, Bill and Dave.
We’ve started having a mystery Muso
to kick our concerts off. They are club
members who do fifteen minutes at the
start of our concerts. So far I’d like to thank
Denis McKay, Viv Sawyer, Scarlet O’Haras,
Emma Hannah, Danny Priestly and Chris
Wilson for their performances.
We still have fairly unfettered access to The
Diggers Club which is an excellent venue
and our sound man, Phil Nixon, continues
to provide the best sound that we have
ever had. I would like to put on record
our appreciation to the Diggers and in
particular our contact, Robbie Rodwell who
has had an Annus ‘Orribilis health wise but
thankfully is back in the land of the living
and firing on all cylinders again.
With great weather, The Festival was our
most successful yet. Not only was it an
artistic success, we managed to turn a very
small profit so we are in the game for 2010.
Our thanks to all our sponsors, particularly
Bluescope Steel and Tourism NSW. The
Festival will be reported on by Festival
Director Dave de Santi .
It should be recorded that the Club is highly
appreciative of the countless hours and
dedication that Dave has put into taking
the Festival to the new heights that it has
achieved. That he does this in a voluntary
capacity and fits it into a busy schedule of
work (paid), Newsletter Editor, Dance Club
Guru and active musician is nothing short
of amazing to us mere mortals. We are also
highly appreciative of the support given to
Dave by his good lady wife Tanya, whose
tolerance is legendary.
All good things must come to an end
or taper off however and Dave is trying
to relinquish some of his activity to fit a
family into his busy life. He has eased of
just a little this year and has taken the role of
artistic director. More needs to go however
and we’ll have to have serious discussions
after this festival about how we structure
ourselves.
Thanks also to our hard working Secretary/
treasurer Ros who has the odious task of
making sure that our finances are in order
as well as ensuring that our meetings are
regularly held. She also has the task of either
controlling the door or organising someone
else to do it.
Thanks also to Roger and Jill for their work
on the Newsletter and they are always
there in support (Unless of course they
are spending Roger’s superannuation
by travelling around Australia). Thanks
must also go to Yvonne O’Grady, Dennis
McKay and Bernard Williams who, along
with myself have ensured our Folk Radio
Programme on VOX Fm continues to be
both high quality and regular.
Thanks also to all the members of the
committee who have worked hard to
keep the club both solvent and viable. To
Dave, who does a great job ensuring our
newsletter appears monthly, To Peter and
Yvonne for their help on the door, to our
Raffle Sellers at the concerts, Janet, Peter,
Mairi and Graeme go our thanks. Bob who
is helping Ros out with the finances and
also taking charge of our new toy- the CdD
reproducer. Also to Tony Foley for doing
anything that needs being done.
I’d also like to express our thanks to Theresa,
who assumed the mantle of publicity officer
last year. Her successful hounding of
myself to produce press releases has meant
that our media coverage has probably been
the best we have ever had. I think we can
attribute much of our rise in attendances to
the work Theresa has done.
I’d also like to thank especially Yvonne
O’Grady, Bill Montgomery and Mairi
Petersen for providing for accommodation
for many of our touring artists and for
providing venues for house concerts. There
is no doubt that one of the reasons so many
of our artists want to return is so they can
again sample the hospitality of Yvonne,
Kath, Monty and Mairi. And best wishes to
Kath who has spent a bit of time in hospital
in the latter half of the year.
Quo Vadis- Illawarra Folk Club. The
club will certainly push ahead with our
usual fortnightly concerts- perhaps we
should look at more theme and ‘five pack’
concerts which seem to be popular. They
also have the advantage of providing more
opportunities for artist to have a gig before
an appreciative audience. There are not
many of these venues around these days.
Perhaps we should look at more social trips,
but. Sometimes fitting these in to an already
busy calendar can be difficult, particularly
in these difficult economic times.
It is the festival however that is our biggest
worry and I said this last year . It survives
because of the efforts of Dave de Santi.
Should he wear out (and we all do) or get
run over by a bus, then we are in trouble.
To be ongoing we need to be looking for a
younger helper or make enough money to
be able to pay someone, at least part time t
o
do the
job. Of course Dave is the obvious choice
but he needs a helper who can learn the
ropes. Even Festivals like Fairbridge in WA
have paid their director two days a week
for the last ten or twelve years. Perhaps we
make it a more manageable event but it is
hard to go backwards as the expectations
are very high.
Anyway it is a question that we should
be getting ready to address and seriously
thinking about. The survival of the festival
is at stake.
Thanks to everyone who has worked hard
for the club this year and we look forward
to a successful year in 2009
