Jon Brooks and Greg Quill, Jon a Canadian and Greg an ex-pat Austral/Canadian are touring Oz for the first time.
It’s Jon Brooks’ first time in Australia, though he’s well known to festival audiences across North America and in Europe. In my estimation, he’s the real deal, a songwriter of extraordinary depth and great compassion, and a performing style that’s impossible to resist. His work has been honoured with several major awards, but they’re scant testimony to his unique gifts. Great songwriters, like the best artists in any discipline, defy convention and confound those who seek comparisons. Jon stands among an exalted few in the enduring Canadian song tradition – Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Fred Eaglesmith, Bruce Cockburn – as a lyricist, composer and performer with a fierce commitment to his craft and his vision. He’s proud to call himself a folksinger at a time when that particular f-word has ceased to have much meaning. Neither cries of protest nor jingoistic hoopla, his songs are post-modern dispatches, a series of dispassionate and unconnected snapshots of the human psyche under pressure and seeking grace. Greg Quill- In Canada most people know him as one of the country's leading cultural journalists, senior arts columnist at the Toronto Star. In Australia, a few will remember another Greg Quill, the award-winning singer-songwriter and leader of the seminal Australian roots band Country Radio, which scored hits with "Gypsy Queen", "Wintersong", "Fleetwood Plain" and "She Do It To Me", toured the country endlessly, headlined at the Sydney Opera House, and shared stages with many musical icons of the era, including Fairport Convention, Elton John, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Santana, J.J. Cale and Stephen Stills, among others. After a final farewell tour of Australia, he returned to Canada, packed away his guitars, and started on a new path as a writer and critic at the Star, Canada's largest daily. Music, particularly folk and traditional acoustic music, has remained an enduring passion, and a couple of years ago, prompted by a call from his Country Radio songwriting partner, steel and mandolin wizard Kerryn Tolhurst - now a producer, session player and songwriter in New York, with albums by New York songwriters Jimmy Norman, Bruce Henderson, and Australia's Cyndi Boste, Jeff Lang, Paul Kelly, The Black Sorrows, Russell Crowe and The Pigram Brothers to his credit - Greg dusted off his instruments, worked the calluses back into his chording fingers, and started writing songs again. Singing with joy and strength their acoustic, folk, pop and soul harmonies, Stiff Gins have travelled and played to most parts of Australia and the world including New Zealand, American Samoa, New Caledonia, Vietnam, Spain, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Egypt, Lebanon, Kuwait, UAE, Cyprus, as well as Canada, the US, Ireland and England. Stiff Gins are through harmony & song, reclaiming a derogatory term for Aboriginal women, instead declaring its meaning as proud, passionate & talented.
