All the musicians are talented composers and have in their repertoire a wide range of original music composed both here in Australia, reflecting our multicultural society, and in Chile. (Pukara – means Fortress in the Aymara language) John Dengate is Australia’s master of parodyhis satirebites, his songs are clever and his sense of the ridiculous is highly developed. He reduces pomposity to banality and he dances precariously around the libel laws. Above all, however, he is an entertainer. John also has prodigious memory and his repertoire of traditional material is second to none. John also writes songs about everyday life, the traumas of catching a train to Guildford, the experience of skin cancer and the problems of being a losing punter. If you reckon you’ve seen John Before well it’s almost certain you have. He has performed at every one of the 26 Illawarra Festivals and is a very familiar face on the busking scene in Sydney, especially around Central Railway. Three young musicians playing the traditional Celtic Music burst on the Illawarra Folk Scene in October lat year and followed up with stirling performances on the train and at the festival. They came down for the volunteers thank you in February and they are back again for this concert. "GET FOLKED are the new faces of old music. Combining traditional Irish, Scottish and medieval music with other folk influences alongside their own unique style, Get Folked are three odd, folky blokes. From the streets to the stage to the folk session at the pub, they've played their music throughout Sydney and continue to do so, with major folk festivals and the release of a CD in the near future." And of course there is the Mystery Performer. Cost of the Night is just $10 for members, $15 others. 2 MARCH 2011 I L L A W A R R A F O L K C L U B N E W S L E T T E R Ambience & Tradition Folk Club Concert Martyn Wyndham- Read (UK) No Such Thing 2pm Sunday 6 March WONGAWILLI COMMUNITY HALL Members $10 Non-Members $15 Another big concert on Sunday Afternoon, February 6th at 2pm this time you can enjoy the great ambience of the Wongawilli Hall and bring something to throw on the Barbie after the concert, and share a bit of conviviality with friends and performers. We have managed to snare one of the best and most highly respected names in the Australian Folk scene (even though he’s a Pom) Martyn Wyndham-Read and get the Illawarra’s largest folk band, ‘No such Thing’ to support him
Martyn Wyndham-Read has been involved with folk music for over forty years. In his late teens he left his mother’s farm in Sussex and headed off, with his guitar, to Australia where he worked on a sheep station Emu Springs in South Australia. It was while he was there that he heard, first hand, the old songs sung by some of the station hands at Emu Springs and he became captivated by these songs and the need to know more of them and where they came from grew. He headed off to Melbourne and became part of the folk song revival there and throughout Australia during the early1960’s.. Back to England in 1967 where he met up with the renowned singer and song collector Bert Lloyd, who himself had spent time in Australia. Martyn was asked by Bert Lloyd to be part of the album ‘Leviathan’ on the Topic label and soon after he started recording for Bill Leader and touring extensively worldwide. In the early 1970’s Martyn started the ‘Maypoles to Mistletoe’ concerts which portray the seasons of the year through song, music, dance and verse and illustration. Martyn is also the instigator of the well known Song Links Project, Martyn is currently working with Shirley Collins on a production called ‘Down the Lawson Track’ featuring stories, poems/songs of the great Australian Poet of the People, Henry Lawson with Pip Barnes, Iris Bishop, Gary Holder and Jackie Oates. His CD Jackeroo portrays his life so far through songs both old and new. Martyn with a younger David De Santi, and Australian folklore collector John Meredith No such Thing is a group of amateur music enthusiasts who come together weekly with the aim of preserving , learning and performing Australia’s rich traditional dance music heritage. They have gone from strength to strength from humble beginnings in 2000 to the release of their internationally successful CD Going To The Barndance in 2008. They have played for dances, concerts and led sessions at folk clubs and festivals including Illawarra Folk Festival The National Folk Festival. as well as providing the music for the Wongawilli Bush Dance monthly since 2005. Apart from these events they performed at the opening of the film Australia with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. No Such Thing never fail to get your feet tapping and put a smile on the face of many a dancer. If you love traditional dance music you’ll love No Such Thing. Songstresses Come to the Gong International Folk Club Concert Gilly Darby (UK) Ann Vriend (Can) 7.30pm Saturday 19 March CITY DIGGERS WOLLONGONG Members $15 Non-Members $20 Two great international female singers will be special guests of the Illawarra Folk Club at the City Diggers on Saturday March 19th. From Canada comes Ann Vriend and from NZ (originally UK) comes Gilly Darbey. Both are making return visits to the club after appearing some years ago. Never before has the club had two female singers of such high caliber on the same bill The ever popular Gilly Darbey has performed at the club on a number of occasions when she has been on tour from the UK and has a great following here in the Illawarra.
