DEPARTMENT: PARKS AND RECREATION FUNDING SOURCE: GENERAL FUND
FY 2012 DEPARTMENTAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Parks Operations Division
� Installed a picnic pavilion at Hunters Trail Park
� Completed sidewalk and press box renovations at StaMo Park
� Renovated softball fields at Community Park and hosted the Annual HS Girls Softball Tournament
� Worked diligently throughout the drought to provide water to over 1500 trees in parks and other City properties
� Provided assistance with tree plantings and pruning in parks, rights-of-way and City Complex and City
properties
� Replaced playground unit at Gammill Park
� Completed renovations to newly acquired MacNaughton Park
� Constructed a new jogging trail of .98 mile at Independence Park
� Provided assistance with four Eagle Scout Projects at Community Park, Buffalo Run Park and Independence
Park
� Assembled new City Christmas tree and other decorations for First Annual Tree Lighting.
� Played a vital role with logistics at seven Recreation Division Special Events
Forestry Division
� Planted 205 trees across six planting locations
� Managed the task of watering over 1,500 trees during the past year drought.
� Conducted routine pruning at four park and right-of-ways locations
� Completed the first eight groves of the Edible Arbor Trail
� Completed Community Roots Program volunteer tree plantings at Quail Green West and Hunters Glen Parks
� Planted 17 Memorial Trees
� Provided citizen education through Forestry website and presentations at five community associations
� Provided an Arbor Day program at Southminster Elementary School
� Helped form Missouri City Green and developed a relationship with Keep Texas Beautiful Affiliation
� Implemented a Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics collection event and managed the associated HGAC
grant
� Solicited $22,880 worth of grants, donations and in-kind goods
� Worked with Scouts and service organizations, generating 938 volunteer labor hours
� Established the Three for Trees program with Quail Valley Golf Course
� Managed the Missouri City Recycling Center and transition into Republic Services
� Managed the Missouri City Tree Farms
Recreation Division
� Created the Recreation Roadshow – a summer in the parks camp that received attention from local newspapers
� Partnered with Rice University to offer an adventure race for families and individuals in Buffalo Run Park
� Participated in a state wide initiative from Texas A&M Ag-Extension (Texas Nature Challenge) to get families
outdoors by creating the Missouri City Tree Challenge
� Partnered with the HERE organization to provide a free Back to School Event for the community
� Recreation Superintendent won Young Professional of the Year for the State of Texas
� Recreation Superintendent wrote four articles for NRPA’s Parks and Recreation Magazine.
� Partnered with Missouri City Green to provide citywide garage sale
� Partnered with the ARC of Fort Bend Co to provide athletic league space, fitness and crafts classes for special
needs populations
� Partnered with Fort Bend Co. Ag-Extension to create the Missouri City 4-H club
� Offered family, individual, youth and senior programming for Missouri City Resident as a part of July is Parks
and Rec month
� Added a successful tree lighting event and change the date, time and location for Snowfest.
� Provided three trout stockings this year to the community
� Offered a free family fishing weekend where 150 fishing poles where given out to the community
