UWC welcomes new members at luncheon
Honorary president and host, Shade Little,
welcomed 30 new members, 16 UWC
board members and 17 friends to a New
Members and Friends luncheon at the
chancellor's home on Sept. 14.
UWC President Sally Brandt explained
reservation and parking procedures to
each of six tables, and Marilyn Hall announced
that the Oct. 19 outing will be to
Pendleton's Farm and Country Market
and Bluejacket Crossing Winery.
The November trip will be to visit the
City Market area in Overland
Park. Visiting the Penzey's Spices shop
promises to put you in the mood for your
holiday baking as well as gift giving. The
Festival of Trees could be visited after
our regular monthly luncheon in December.
As we don't meet in January, February's
outing takes us south of town to the
Wakarusa River Valley Heritage Museum
and on to see Sleepy Jean's Confection's.

Dear UWC Members,
C
elebrate the present! What
a great start to our UWC
year! Sign-Up Day was
attended by over 100 new and returning
members who signed up
for more than 20 interest groups
and gave us suggestions for several
more. Thanks, again, to Nancy
Hale-Martinko and Suzanne Collins
who planned such a lovely
day. Thanks, as well, to all the
group coordinators who sat at tables
and enticed you to sign up for
more interest groups than you can
possibly attend this year.
We honor the past with a list of
Honored Members of UWC in
this issue of the KU Women’s
Club newsletter. We owe them
our gratitude for all they have
done for KU and for developing
the thriving organization that we
enjoy today.

The UWC board met Sept. 27 and
approved several changes in the organization’s
constitution regarding
job description (see article from Policy
Chair Janis Hutchison elsewhere
in this newsletter).
The board also approved the president’s
appointments to four committees:
new and former members. Some
are new to Lawrence and KU;
some are just new to UWC. I
hope you all will meet and greet
them and make some new
friends!
Please take advantage of our exceptional
monthly luncheon programs,
thanks to Sandra
Wiechert. The theme of KU: Far
Above and Beyond certainly will
carry us forward as we learn
more about the workings of various
aspects of KU.
What a wonderful way for our
new members to learn more
about the university and for the
rest of us to gain some additional
knowledge, too! Luncheon reservations

before the luncheon. An addition
to our already excellent program

The UWC board regretfully has
accepted the resignation of Sally
Zogry, president-elect. She commutes
to Topeka for her work, and
her family and professional commitments
keep her very busy. We
will miss her. The election for her
replacement will occur at our next
meeting on Nov. 1.
Our year is off to a terrific start,
thanks to all of you who have embraced
it with enthusiasm. I hope
UWC will continue to be an enjoyable
part of your busy schedule.
Let me know if I can help
make it even more so. I look forward
to seeing you at many of our
UWC activities.

UWC Programs 2012-2013
KU: Far Above and Beyond
Dr. Paul Laird got our 2012-2013
luncheon programs off to a great
start with his highly informative
and entertaining talk and media
presentation on Oct. 4. He spoke
on “KU Music Above and Beyond:
The History of Music at
KU,” and the hour just wasn't long
enough for his abundant material.
There were audible sighs from the
audience when he had to stop.
On Nov. 1, Monte Soukup, KU
Endowment Association senior
vice president for Property, will
share his knowledge on “KUEA:
Far Above, and Endowment Lands
Beyond.” You will be astounded at
the amount of land and property
KU actually owns, where they are,
and how Monte manages them.
The Lied Center Pavilion will be
the location for our Dec. 6 luncheon.
And what a holiday treat you
will have! Dr. Scott McBride
Smith, School of Music and direc-
tor of the International Institute
for Young Musicians (IIYM),
will speak on “KU IIYM: Pianos
Far Above and Beyond.” His
brief talk will be followed by
piano performances from two
Lawrence teenagers who attended
IIYM last summer: Ulises
Magana de la Paz, 12, and the
winner of IIYM 2012,
Chaeyoung Park, 15. You cannot
imagine how outstanding
these two pianists are. What a
privilege to have them perform
for us! (The location change is
due to a complicated KU parking
garage situation that day.)
Returning to the Malott Room
on Feb. 7, Jennifer Jackson
Sanner, KU Alumni Association
senior vice president for Communications,
will speak on
“KUAA: Far Above, and Serving
Alumni Around the World.”
Jennifer, as editor of the KU
Special election for president-elect
The UWC board accepted the
resignation of Sally Zogry, president-elect,
at its September
meeting.
The Nominations Committee has
nominated Jannie Barron for this
position in accordance with Arti-
cles VI.3III and VII.2 of our
constitution.
The special election will be
held as part of our monthly
meeting Nov. 1 in the Malott
Room.

Alumni Magazine, will tell us of
her work gathering and sharing
information concerning alumni
around the world and of the association's
mission in serving them.
Timothy Caboni, KU vice chancellor
for Public Affairs, will speak
March 7 on “KU: Far Above, and
its Campuses Beyond Mt. Oread.”
Sure, we all know about the KU
Medical Center, but did you know
that there are several other campuses
and teaching centers, too?
It is my joy and privilege to plan
and organize these programs. Do
come and learn lots more about
our beloved KU and its work far
beyond Mt. Oread. And of course,
attend the April 4 Scholarship
Awards Luncheon and annual
meeting.

More than 100 attend Sign-Up Day
On Sept. 6 over 100 UWC members
gathered in the newly renovated
Malott Room to begin another
exciting year. The afternoon
provided an opportunity to visit
with friends and sign up for interest
groups. Twenty-one groups
were available.
The refreshment table was decorated
with several Jayhawks in
support of this year’s program
theme KU—Far Above and Beyond.
The focus will be on the
many assets of KU and Lawrence.
Refreshments again supported
healthy living and wellness, along
with a treat of chocolate.
Suzanne Collins provided a basket
where members could make suggestions
for new interest groups
(see related article in this newsletter).
All UWC members are encouraged
to participate in as many interest
groups as possible. If you
were unable to come to sign up or
just are now paying dues, contact

from? Many of the current groups
have been organized since the
1950s and continue to have enjoyable
programs and activities.
At some point someone must have
said, “I want to know more
about...something” and formed a
group that began meeting.

groups. At the Sept. 6 sign-up afternoon,
members were asked to
give suggestions of areas they
would be interested in learning
more about sometime. The following
is a summary of the suggestions

Change in rules results in 38 new members
This year is historic for UWC as
we expand our membership to include
women graduates of KU.
Many people worked hard to get
the word out about this change.

The period of Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 is
the time to review your Medicare
Prescription Drug Plan (PDP).
Sally Brandt has volunteered with
Senior Health Insurance Counselors
for Kansas (SHICK) for six
years and will be happy to help
anyone who needs assistance reviewing
her plan. There will be a
sign-up sheet at the November
meeting for some dates and times
or call Sally at 842-5148 to

Board accepts policy recommendations
The year 1904 saw the Ladies of
the Faculty (pre-UWC name)
form our constitution, although
the actual beginning was in 1900
with dues of $1. Since then, policy
committees have amended
pages and revised operational
procedures numerous times as
needed. Current board approval
for three recommendations about
officers’ duties and a standing
committee’s job description was
given at our fall quarterly meeting
on Sept. 27, which updated the
duties of the Treasurer to read:
1. “shall be to assist in preparation
of the budget using
an appropriate computer
program.”
The duties of the Treasurer-Elect
were updated to read:
1. “Work closely with the
Treasurer on proposed
budget and financial
statements, using an appropriate
computer program.”
The work of the Nominations
Committee was clarified to read:
“Written job descriptions must
be given to each person before
accepting a nomination” (as an

Union Malott Room. Luncheons follow at 12:30 p.m. in the Kansas Room, with the exception of the Dec. 6
