The round before the Easter break in Division 1 of the
AFL Canberra Labor Club Premiership saw an average of
35 goals kicked for the three matches however margins
averaged 85 points each. Wins to Eastlake over the
Sydney Swans, Ainslie over Queanbeyan and Belconnen
over Tuggeranong have Eastlake and Belconnen
undefeated and sharing top spot after two rounds.
Let’s hope this weekend’s round is much closer.
Tuggeranong home to Eastlake will be desperate for their
first win for the season. Ainslie travel to Sydney with
the Swans keen to win their first for ’09 and great rivals
Queanbeyan and Belconnen should provide the match of
the round at Dairy Farmers Park.
In Division 2, the 2008 Grand Finalists, Belconnen and
Queanbeyan, face off to see who will be the team to
beat for this year’s flag. In our Under 18’s, Marist are
home to Ainslie on picturesque Lindwall Oval for their
2008 Grand Final replay. In Division 3, Ainslie are home
to 2008 premiers Gungahlin and in Division 4, Gungahlin
are home to 2008 premiers Yass in their grand final
rematch.
Greenway Oval Tuggeranong will see all four
Tuggeranong men’s teams play over this weekend.
The Tuggeranong Hawks ACT Women’s AFL team, who
were runner up to Ainslie in the NAB challenge Pre-
Season Carnival staged earlier this month, will have
players joining those from the eight ACTWAFL clubs
vying for ACT selection in the annual North v South
representative fixture on Greenway Oval on Sunday. 24
players will get the opportunity this season to represent
AFL Canberra in the National Championships over the
June long weekend in Perth. The Tuggeranong Football
Club is working hard to build the Valley’s football future.
I urge you to support them and get down to Greenway
this weekend to see some great footy.
Next weekend AFL Canberra footy returns to Manuka
JOHNSTON’S
JOURNEY
AT THE START OF LAST SEASON
LEWIS JOHNSTON WAS TOLD BY
HIS SOUTH AUSTRALIAN STATE
COACH THAT HE WAS NOT LIKELY
TO BE DRAFTED THAT YEAR.
12 months later and the 18-year-old from Port Pirie has
completed his first pre-season with the Sydney Swans
and performed brightly in the opening rounds of the AFL
Canberra competition.
Johnston was selected with pick 12 in the 2008 National
Draft, on the back of some impressive performances
at the National Under 18 Championships, which lead
to him being named at Centre Half Forward in the All
Australian Team. Johnston says having low expectations
made it more satisfying when he was drafted.
“I wasn’t really expecting to be drafted because he [S.A
coach] told me I wouldn’t. Then I was pretty excited
that I went pick 12.”
While a move from country South Australia to the bright
lights of Sydney would intimidate most, Johnston
says he was always prepared.
“I was always going to leave home because I lived in
a small country town
so I was more excited than anything else.”
Johnston says that life as an AFL footballer in Sydney
is not what he expected.
“Up here hardly anyone knows about
AFL. Compared to Port Pirie it’s not
normal really.
“It’s pretty laid back up in Sydney.”
“Being an AFL footballer is not like being one in
South Australia or Melbourne.”
Seamus Bromley
AFL Canberra Record Journalist
Johnston admits that the level of training was
something he initially had some trouble adapting to.
“It’s hard, running and doing weights all the time and
the weights affected my running a bit because I
was pulling up pretty sore,” Johnston said.
“You need to keep up high intensity for the
whole session.”
The first-round draft pick showed promise in the opening
rounds, despite the Swans suffering heavy defeats.
However he still sees room for improvement.
“I was reasonably happy to get off to a good start, but
there were still a lot of little things I could have done
to play better.”
“I was reasonably happy to get off to a good
start, but there were still a lot of little
things I could have done to play better.”
Johnston’s journey to the AFL is regarded as the
traditional path for young hopefuls. Johnston was
a part of the 2007/08 AIS-AFL Academy Squad
before representing South Australia at the National
Championships and attending the National Draft Camp.
In between he played for North Adelaide in the SANFL,
managing three reserve games on top of a strong season
for their under 17’s. He credits the AIS experience with
making him realise he had a future in football, ahead of
basketball and javelin, two sports he also represented
South Australia in.
Johnston clocked up a remarkable 60,000 kms last year,
travelling to training and games. Because of his remote
location he often found himself training by himself,
however he knew the hard work would pay off.
“I knew that if I kept going on, things would eventually
turn out good for me.”
Looking to the rest of the season, the mild-mannered
teenager was not getting ahead of himself.
“I just want to keep training harder and play some
consistent football in the reserves, and hopefully play
a senior game.”
While all the hard work is beginning to pay off, one
feels the teenager from country South Australia is
only getting started.
SWANS CUP
Many young players dream of stepping onto the SCG and
following the footsteps of their idols. The SPORTSREADY
Swans Cup gives the finest high school students from
NSW and ACT the chance to make that dream a reality.
The competition gives students a chance to experience
Australian Rules Football at school. The Cup’s popularity
has increased since it began in 2006, with over 100
schools competing last year. Fifty Two ACT based sides
have entered this year’s competition.
The popularity has forced the competition to expand in
2009, with an Under 16 division added to the current
open age and Under 14 Divisions.
The Swans Cup is divided into regional sections with
local sides playing each other. Regional champions then
The ‘best of the best’ of the ACT Women’s Australian
Football League will be on show on Sunday in what
is shaping up to be a blockbuster North v South
representative match.
The rivalry between the South Canberra and North
Canberra clubs will come to a head on Sunday 19th
April at Greenway Oval as the girls battle it out to make
selection for the ACT representative squad heading to
Perth in June.
North will be coached by Rebecca Goddard and Damon
Cook will be in charge of the South side.
Rebecca Goddard has represented the ACT at five
women’s national championships and is the coach of the
Gungahlin Jets women’s team, and as a proud and paid
up Hawthorn member has come to expect success.
Damon Cook has coached every age level in juniors
and has played for Eastlake since he was seven.
The match will allow the women wishing to play in the
National Championships in Perth to showcase their skills
for the selectors, as the match is a selection trial match
for the Championships.
progress to the knock-out section and play against other
schools from NSW or ACT.
The competition’s open age final is held at the Sydney
Cricket Ground in August. The Under 16 and 14 Divisions
finals are held at Blacktown Olympic Park in September.
The ACT involvement in the cup is overseen by General
Manager’s John Love and Cameron James. Their
involvement has helped forge the new Under 16
division in the competition.
John Love said the ACT region were at the forefront for
the inclusion. “I guess you could say we are at the head
of the pack for that age group. It’s getting trialled this
year for the first time, and we have pushed hard for it
so all ages at high school can be involved” he said.
ACT WOMEN’S
REPRESENTATIVE MATCH
North Vs South
Joel Diggins
AFL Canberra Record Journalist
Sarah Browne
AFL Canberra Record Journalist
Goddard has predicted the match to be a tough one.
“...the South team is made up of girls with a stronger
past in competition but North has a pretty fast
running team”
The South squad is made up of girls from the Eastlake
Demons, Tuggeranong Hawks, ADFA Rams and Riverina
Lions, while North has recruited from Gungahlin Jets,
Ainslie Tricolours, ANU Griffins and the Belconnen
Magpies.
Goddard commented on the rivalry between the two
teams, and playfully talked up her sides chances
“I think it’s a fairly healthy rivalry, but I look forward
the better side of town having a win on Sunday”
“He (Damon Cook) might have the older experienced
girls in the South side, but I think the North young
guns will pull through”
Karina Demant from Ainslie FC has been announced
as captain of the North Squad.
The game is a perfect curtain raiser for the women’s
season which commences next weekend.
IN THE BLOOD – CELEBRATING THE RED AND WHITE
There are few football clubs, of any code in the world, older than
the Sydney Swans. The Club was born as South Melbourne in
1874 and has experienced both heartache and jubilation, lean
times and richly rewarding eras over the past 135 years. The
Swans have always worn the red and white with pride, winning
four Victorian Football Association premierships before becoming
one of the eight inaugural VFL clubs in 1897. Swans fans and
supporters can now own a piece of this history with the launch
of Jim Main’s new book, In The Blood – Celebrating the red and
white, to be released in July 2009 to coincide with the centenary
of the Swans’ first VFL/AFL premiership victory in 1909.
CLUB NEWS
Tuggeranong Hawks Football Club
After a narrow loss in Round 1 to the Tigers, the players
were hoping for some improvement. Although the
Hawks were happy to play at Greenway, our home game
was transferred to Gordon and a lot of our players
went back to where their grass roots footy began. The
Gordon breeze sprang up early and the Hawks were
hoping for that home ground advantage, but it wasn’t
to be. The U18 boys had a good win which should build
their confidence, but the senior boys missed some good
opportunities and suffered heavy losses. Willy O took a
heavy fall but has recovered well.
Congratulations to Ben Symons, Troy Edwards and James
Willoughby for being selected in the CATS U16 team.
Great effort boys.
The Women’s team had a narrow loss in their pre season
carnival grand final last weekend at Queanbeyan but
Angela Ballerini came away with player of the carnival.
This weekend sees a feast of footy at Greenway. On
Saturday, the Hawks take on Eastlake in our first home
game and then on Sunday the Women’s Representative
selection trial is on, followed by the Hawks 3rd grade v
Woden.
Members and supporters are invited back to the
Southern Cross Club at 6.30pm after senior games for
Match Awards.
Thanks as always to our sponsors and supporters
Eastlake Football Club
The feeling in the bus home from Sydney after our last
match was very different to previous years. We have
copped some hidings in Sydney over the years and for
a change it was nice not to have our tails between
our legs.
This Saturday sees the start of our revamped after match
awards with the emphasis on having a bit more fun and
more involvement by mums, girlfriends and wives in
the club.
Our big trivia night is on May 2 and it will be interesting
to see if the controversial (they were basically a bunch
of smart alecks!) 2008 winners of the Demons Einstein
Trophy will be back to defend their title. The other point
of interest will be to see if the Queensland table can
actually win the wooden spoon this time as they were
very unlucky to have another table so feral that they
had to be content with second last place.
Our first home match is on May 2 and that will see
the return of the Whiteants in the Menzies Stand.
This illustrious group of former “great” players will once
again provide their fantastic support for the Demons.
CLUB NEWS
Queanbeyan Tigers Football Club
Today’s match against the Belconnen Magpies represents the
100th 1st Grade game for the Tigers by Ryan Quade. This is a
wonderful achievement for our Co - Captain who has been a
tremendous ambassador for the Tigers Club and follows in the
footsteps of his father Brian Quade – a former Coach of the
Club and current Chairman of AFL Canberra.
Ryan has been in outstanding form in the opening two rounds.
He looks in peak physical condition as he fills in many roles
around the ground in season 2009. The achievement of playing
100 1st Grade games will be officially recognised at the Tigers
100 Club Dinner on Saturday 15 August.
After the Easter break, we are hopeful of having a number of
players back on deck after many were missing from the teams
that clashed with Ainslie two weeks ago. Two wins from three
games against the Tricolours was a satisfying result for the club
albeit a disappointing last quarter from the senior grade team.
No doubt the previous week’s game against Tuggeranong on the
Sunday in extreme conditions took a lot out of the players. Our
thanks and appreciation to the host club for their hospitality
on the day.
Each week through the pages of the footy record we would
like to acknowledge a volunteer. Our Tigers Volunteer of the
Week for Round 3 is Lisa Bush. This pint size lady has assisted
the Tigers for the past three years as a water person giving
her time freely to both the senior grade teams. She is a former
professional tennis player having played at the Australian Open
and Wimbledon. Lisa enjoys her footy “fix” each week being
an avid fan of Carlton. Her employees are well known AFL
Canberra sponsors Robyn and Darryl Jenkins of the Canberra
Trophy Centre. As Volunteer of the Week, Lisa receives a
voucher from the Star Q Café & Bar in Queanbeyan.
CANBERRA LABOR CLUB
DRIVING FOOTY IN THE
CAPITAL
For all those wondering how a successful footy season
is able to go ahead, it’s hard to look past the sponsors of
AFL Canberra. This year the Canberra Labor Club Group
has taken over the role of major sponsor and is looking
to make the 2009 season as successful and memorable
as possible.
The Canberra Labor Club Group is widely recognised
as a key contributor to the local community having
won the prestigious “Clubs ACT Community Assistance
Award” six times in the last eight years. Angela Mann,
a representative of the Canberra Labor Club Group,
says “it’s our mission to contribute to the community
and becoming partners with AFL Canberra was a great
avenue to make that happen”.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Canberra
Labor Club Group in the community, something that
is a proud achievement for General Manager Arthur
Roufogalis.
“We feel we have built up a great relationship with the
Canberra community through our four clubs” he told
the AFL Canberra Record, “and we hope to continue our
strong committed support, through their sporting, social
and charity orgainisations”.
The Canberra Labor Club Group not only gives to the
community through sponsorship and charity though.
Through their four clubs in Belconnen, Ginninderra,
Weston Creek and Civic they are able to provide first
class service to all their members making it a perfect
venue for all occasions.
Jack Baker
AFL Canberra Record Journalist
“Our clubs provide a relaxing post game environment to
wind down after the exciting matches that AFL Canberra
provide” Mr. Roufogalis said. “With delicious food, a
variety of beverages and a comfortable atmosphere, the
Canberra Labor Club venues are the perfect place to go
after the game”.
There is a variety of meals to choose from, off the
Canberra Labor Club Group’s inviting menu, perfect for
a family dining experience. They also boast an extensive
range of beers on tap, and a variety of wines, spirits
and other beverages to suit all tastes, at club prices.
Furthermore TAB facilities, with Sky channel and three
additional Foxtel channels, mean you can watch all the
big games and sporting events in one easy location.
With pool tables providing more relaxed entertainment
and plenty of promotions throughout the year, the
Canberra Labor Club Group’s four venues are perfect for
socializing with friends.
Another helpful feature of the Canberra Labor Club
group is the function rooms they provide, excellent for
a business seminar or important staff meetings. Free
buses are also provided to all Canberra Raiders and CA
Brumbies games courtesy of the Canberra Labor Club
Group, making it easy to support our local teams.
The Canberra Labor Club Group is dedicated to
contributing to the local community and along with
providing their members with first class service this
is their top priority. With four fine venues throughout
Canberra it really is a perfect place to congregate after
every win, loss or draw.
