A brief description <strong>of</strong> each <strong>of</strong> these sub-systems is given <strong>in</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

paragraphs.<br />

After perambulat<strong>in</strong>g a distance <strong>of</strong> about 40 km from Melli <strong>in</strong> hilly<br />

terra<strong>in</strong>, the river enters <strong>in</strong>to the pla<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> West Bengal at Sevoke near<br />

Siliguri. Further ahead, it fans out and atta<strong>in</strong>s the width <strong>of</strong> 4 to 5 km at<br />

places. In the Sub-Himalayan pla<strong>in</strong>s, it is aga<strong>in</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>ed by a number <strong>of</strong><br />

tributaries viz. Leesh, Geesh, Chel, Neora from the north-eastern end<br />

and the Karala from the north-western end. After travers<strong>in</strong>g a length <strong>of</strong><br />

about 414 km <strong>in</strong> India and Bangladesh, it meets the river Brahmaputra<br />

(Jamuna) <strong>in</strong> Bangladesh at an elevation <strong>of</strong> 23 m.<br />

In the mounta<strong>in</strong> gorges, the width <strong>of</strong> the river <strong>Teesta</strong> is not much.<br />

At Chungthang, the width <strong>of</strong> the river is 30 m and at S<strong>in</strong>gtam 40 m<br />
