Cougars rally past Indians
Sokol, Jankins spark
Quaboag to its best
play in years
Five seasons. Not since the
Tom Baker, Josh Loughlin,
Corey Tebo years
has the Quaboag baseball team
played this well.
Greg Sokol pitched a masterful
six-hitter and teamed with
star Thomas Jankins to lead the
Cougars to a 5-2 win at Grafton
Monday.
Coming in the aftermath of
the team’s stunning 10-0 win
over Bartlett on Friday, the
Cougars improved their record
to 4-8. With its streamlined
team, Quaboag has become a
contender for a Districts berth,
admittedly still an outside challenger.
It was reported here last week
that Quaboag had a chance to
qualify under the Division 3 70
percent stipulation. This meant
that because of Quaboag’s truncated
D3 schedule as its part in
the Southern Worcester League,
Lady Cougars nicked
by Indians in extras
- WARREN -
After its unbeaten start,
the defending Division
3 softball champion
Quaboag lost to two of
the best teams in the region,
Uxbridge and undefeated
Grafton.
The Indians edged Quaboag
(9-3, 7-3 SWCL), 2-1 in 10
innings. After a 7-0 start, the
Cougars split their next four.
“We’ve played well enough,”
said coach John Fox.
“But I think we can pick it
back up again.”
Andrea Vulter of the Indians
drove in the winning run,
breaking up a classic pitching
duel.
Things began quickly for
Quaboag, its igniters, Kaitlyn
Ramsey and Ally Sweet getting
the team on the board in
the fi rst. Ramsey led off with
a double and scored on a single
by Sweet.
But then Grafton’s Kendal
Roy stiffened. Roy limited
the Cougars to just fi ve hits
afterward and kept the Cougars
offense off of the board.
In girls lacrosse, led by Melissa
Frio and Cassidy Robert
who each scored three goals,
the Warriors defeated Grafton,
Grafton tied it in the second
on a run scoring single by Michelle
Goulet. Then Roy and
Haley Fountain of Quaboag
would match scoreless frames
through nine innings.
It set the stage for Vulter’s
winning hit.
“Overall it was a good performance
by our team,” said
coach Fox. “Grafton has a
tremendous offense; they’ve
put up 97 runs in 11 games
this season. And Kendal is
also phenomenal, allowing
only eight runs in her pitching
performance. We had our
chances, putting runners in
scoring position in three different
innings. But I thought
our defense really played
well. They also had runners
in scoring position from their
side. But we held them. They
had a runner on third with
two outs in the eighth. They
had runners in scoring position
three separate times with
no outs. We had our backs
to the wall and kept competing.
It was a very good effort
against a very good team.
Not a perfect effort, but a
very good one.”
Also scoring for Tantasqua
were Taylor Farland and Savannah
Lundwell who each
scored two, Jess Farland, Alex
Darger, Jessie Frio, Alli Tichy,
Emily Kirker and Georgia
Granger.
Madi Trainor had seven
saves.
The Warriors then were defeated
by Western Mass power
Minnechaug, 17-6. Jessie
Frio, Robert, Lundwell, Jess
Farland, Taylor Farland and
Melissa Frio all scored for the
Warriors, who trailed 10-4 at
the half.
Kandra Densereua played a
superb second half and fi nished
the day with four saves.
In softball, the Lady Warriors
were defeated by St. Peter-Marian
in a slugfest.
