is especially touched by the really small
express their ideas and add their own
points to the discussion. It was a really
great year.”
According to Welsh, the move to Kindergarten
was a big change. “Talk about
different ends of the spectrum,” she said.
As much as she liked working with the
older students, Welsh said she is happy
to be back with the younger ones. “Once
I got in here I remembered why I wanted
to teach Kindergarten,” she said.
“They are expected to know so much before
they enter First Grade.”
For Welsh, watching her students
learning and changing before her eyes is
the best part of her job. “The growth you
see in these kids is unbelievable,” said
Welsh. “You see more day-to-day progress
in here than in any other grade.”
Welsh said when the students arrive in
September they are, by and large, very
dependent. “They can’t write, they can’t
read,” she said. “They can’t cut paper. In
All of the proceeds from the plants
sales will be donated to Heifer International,
a global nonprofi t organization
with the goal of ending poverty
and hunger in a sustainable fashion.
Heifer International gives out gifts of
livestock, seeds and trees and extensive
training to those in need. “The students
will choose how the money will be dispersed
through Heifer,” Kiraly-Thomas
said, “The students will take a fi eld trip
to the Heifer Learning Center at Overlook
Farm in Rutland. “We are going to
look at sustainable agriculture as it pertains
to livestock, such as not overfeeding,
and things of that sort and we will
also learn how to teach people to sustain
their own food sources.”
The students will sell their plants
some cases, they can’t even hold a pencil.
By the time they leave, they can read
and write one or two sentences. It’s so
rewarding to see what they’ve learned
and to see how proud they are of what
they’ve achieved.”
Welsh said watching her students
making that kind of progress is what
keeps her going. “It’s just amazing how
much they pick up,” she said. “They
never stop surprising me. I’m constantly
impressed with what they can do. Everyday
there’s something that makes me
say ‘wow’!”
