Mind, mission set on Alzheimer’s
By Emily Thurlow
Staff Writer
BRIMFIELD – Growing up, Catherine Dionne
spent every day with her grandfather. Because he lived
next door, the two were always
together. Whether their time was
spent indoors or on their long nature
walks, he was always a part of
her daily routine, and she of his.
But that schedule gradually
shifted out of place when Dionne’s
grandfather started to experience
symptoms of Alzheimer’s and eventually
passed due to complications
related to the disease.
Dionne, of Brimfi eld, who has
been involved with the Alzheimer’s
Association for 10 years now, has
taken her fi rst-hand knowledge of
dealing with the disease and put
her energy and efforts into fi nding
a cure. And this coming fall, she
will participate in her ninth Walk
to End Alzheimer’s.
“My grandfather had Alzheimer’s
and I wanted to learn more
about the disease. I have also
worked with residents that have
Alzheimer’s and dementia in nursing
homes for years,” she said, noting
that in addition to honoring her
late grandfather, she will be walking to support those
she’s encountered throughout her experience in elder
care facilities.
By participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, Dionne
will be helping to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s
disease and money to support research, programs and
services for the Alzheimer’s Association, Massachusetts/New
Hampshire Chapter.
“There has never been a greater need to join the fi ght
against Alzheimer’s disease by participating in Walk to
End Alzheimer’s,” said James Wessler, President/CEO
of the Alzheimer’s Association, Massachusetts/New
Hampshire Chapter. “We are truly grateful to Cathy
and all of those participating for their commitment.”
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s
is now the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As
baby boomers age, the number of people affected by the
disease will rapidly increase, surpassing the estimated
5.4 million Americans that are living with the affl iction
presently. The disease also has a signifi
cant impact on family members,
with nearly 15 million providing care
to a loved one.
“Dealing with Alzheimer’s is having
to go through the grieving process
twice, watching someone slip away
a little each day mentally and physically,”
Dionne said. “Knowing that I
can somehow help better the quality
of life of someone else or even better
my future is what motivates me.”
Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia
that causes problems with memory,
thinking and behavior. Over time,
symptoms will develop and worsen
becoming severe enough to interfere
with daily tasks. Currently the disease
has no cure.
“22 years ago there weren’t a lot of
resources about Alzheimer’s when my
grandfather was struggling with it.
TURLEY PUBLICATIONS SUBMITTED PHOTO And a lot of people didn’t want to talk
Cathy Dionne of Brimfi eld will be taking about it,” she said. “But now we’ve
part in her ninth Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
gotten a lot closer to a cure and many
forms of treatment.”
In the past, she has participated in
the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Worcester County, but
this year will be walking and participating as a regional
leader in the Pioneer Valley. The walk will take place on
Saturday, Sept. 22 at Holyoke Community College on
303 Homestead Ave. in Holyoke. Registration starts at
9 a.m. and the walk will begin at 10:30 a.m.
“Like I always say, I would be more than happy to
be out of a job if it meant that we were able to overcome
this devastating disease,” she said. “This walk will help
me to help others.”
efforts with the Pioneer Valley Walk or are interested
