SOFTBALL I FROM PAGE 14
Bartlett on Friday, 7-4. Dani Sweet,
Demi Perrin and Ally Sweet paced the
Cougars 10-hit attack with two hits
apiece.
The Cougars were forced to rally
to win this game as well. Bartlett had
grabbed a 3-1 lead in the top of the second
as Darryle Stone and Alexis Podewamy
drove in the runs.
But the Cougars gamely rallied. Utilizing
their running game, they answered
with three runs in the bottom of the third.
The key hits by Jess McCann, Harley
Wdowiak and Perrin sparked the rally.
Madison Messier and Perrin also
contributed key stolen bases to keep the
rally going.
The teams would exchange runs in
the fi fth and sixth, keeping the Cougars
safely ahead.
The Cougars scored their run when
Dani Sweet doubled to the gap in right
center to score Ally Sweet.
“We had a diffi cult time against their
pitcher, Lucy Orne,” said the coach. “It’s
diffi cult to go up against a pitcher like
Uxbridge’s Norberg, who has tremendous
velocity, and then go up against
Orne, who’s a seventh-grader and doesn’t
throw nearly as hard. We were able to
capitalize on their errors though and get
a much needed win.”
It would set up the matchup with the
Indians, having a great season at 11-0.
The Cougars have continued to be a
team that is around the top of the league,
still a reputable force to be reckoned with
in the Division 3 playoff chase. Though
their hitting is not overpowering, it’s reliable.
The Cougars have Andy Koslowski
at 23rd in the elongated SWCL hitting
leader list at .393.
Fountain is next with a .364 average.
Her pitching still superlative, Fountain
was third in the league with a 9-3 record
and a superb 1.90 earned run average.
Quaboag braces for the fi nal push
over the next three weeks. It was a year
ago when the team made its surge to the
title. Fox thought that the team’s effort
against Grafton was emblematic of its capability
to repeat.
“We played Grafton evenly through
seven innings (after the teams exchanged
early runs). Each team has their chances,”
Fox said.
