Zebra teapot, clay, thrown, slip,<br />

gas fired, h 23 cm, 2005<br />

dancing half is made of a fine white clay hand built light and thin,<br />

then covered in porcelain slip. They suggest weightlessness of wings<br />

in flight. The contrast of the earthly base to the fine soaring wings<br />

is the essence of the work. Charlotte fires these “Dancers” as she<br />

calls them in a gas kiln, to keep the skin pure and unaffected.<br />

Charlottes lives in a beautiful typical brick “Berry” house, in<br />

a lush garden, her atelier is almost as big as her house, she has<br />

a huge wood kiln outside, and stacks of wood. She feels well<br />

integrated and happy to be part of this potting community.<br />

She is a member of the CCCLB (association of La Borne potters);<br />

and has acted for many years as its president and<br />

vice president.<br />

Her house is a magic world of pottery; a huge<br />

Micheal Cardew lidded pot, Claude Varlan jar, Seung<br />

ho Yang vase, Brigitte and Hans Borgeson, Catherine<br />

Vanier, Claudi Casanovas, George Sybesma<br />

and more and more. She eats dinner from<br />

beautiful hand made plates and drinks tea from<br />

beautiful teapots and cups made by many of<br />

the La Borne potters.<br />

La Borne is a charming, idyllic corner of the<br />

world. The evolution of Charlotte Poulsen's<br />

work is of course a personal one, but also a<br />

universal one. We each of us change with<br />

time and our own personal tastes. Also the<br />

traditional way of working is no longer feasible<br />

for a potter. Most of us started working<br />

on a wheel, but abandoned it after a while.<br />

Like Charlotte one has to find out what's important,<br />

find one's own path and to travel it,<br />

being true to oneself..<br />

Charlotte Poulsen was born in Denmark in 1950. Studied ceramics from 1969-73 at aarhus<br />

Kunstakademie (DK). In 1972 came to La Borne for the first time, and worked with Pierre<br />

Mestre. From 1978 -80 she was a teacher at aarhus Kunstakademie in DK. In 1981 came to<br />

La Borne to start a studio and settle for good. From 1993-2003 president of CCCLB 2003-06<br />

vice president of CCCLB<br />
