2008 Annual Report
FC1
Our mission
Our mission at the American Paint Horse Association (APHA)
is to collect, record and preserve the pedigrees of American Paint
Horses, and to stimulate and regulate all matters pertaining to
the promotion, history, breeding and exhibition of this breed.
Our success depends on our ability to provide fiscally responsible
and efficient services to our members. We aspire to excellence
in recordkeeping, reporting, recruiting, educating and
supporting our membership, so that we may inspire confidence
and create in them a desire to use our services. APHA serves
both the breed and our members by being aware of the
industry and market, and of the needs, opportunities
and challenges of our members.
A Message from the Executive Director
I am always inspired by the level of commitment given to our organization by our dedicated members.
As you will discover from this Annual Report, we are about 85,000 members strong, with people hailing
from 43 nations and territories around the world.
APHA has grown to be one of the largest and most successful breed organizations in the world today, thanks
to the hard work of our members, and their continued commitment to our success.
That drive and dedication to serve the Paint Horse breed is most obvious in our Paint Horse people who
sign on for multi-year participation, and especially lifetime memberships.
Steadily, our lifetime membership rolls have risen over the past several years. In 2008, for example,
the number of APHA lifetime members stood at a record 5,184. In 2003, that number was 3,649.
Just in the past 5 years, we have seen a 42 percent increase in the number of lifetime members.
This is remarkable in the context of our history. We started with only a few dozen members and few
hundred horses in 1962. Our founders worked hard in the early years to prove that American Paint Horses
had the talent, athletic ability and intelligence to excel in the
competitive arena. And their solid conformation and colorful
coat patterns made them standouts.
It didn’t take long, however, for the whole world to discover
what our early founders knew all along.
Today, we’re closing in on nearly 1 million registered American
Paint Horses and we have tens of thousands of members who
faithfully support our breed through their participation in APHA.
If you are an APHA member, I’d like to ask you to renew
your commitment to our great organization. If you enjoy Paint
Horses, and you are not a member yet, I’d like to invite you
to join us.
And most of all, I want to salute those members who are
making lifetime commitments to supporting our great
organization and our outstanding American Paint Horses.
Through your example, our organization will persevere in
our mission to advance the American Paint Horse breed.
Sincerely,
Lex Smurthwaite
APHA Executive Director
A Message from the President
I am privileged to have been elected by my peers to the position of president of the American Paint Horse
Association. It is a role that carries great responsibility and I pledge to work hard to advance our great
association and magnificent American Paint Horse breed.
Fortunately, I have a great Executive Committee to assist me, and nearly 85,000 dedicated members
of one of the largest horse breed organizations in the world today.
One of the first orders of business we undertook was to listen to the input from our directors and those members.
With that in mind, we expanded our World Championship Paint Horse Series to include two shows this year.
We fully expect this show series to be the foundation on which we build a successful World Show
program going forward.
A Summer World Championship Show will be held June 22 – July 4. We are happy to report that the show
will include an expanded program of Novice Youth World Championship classes. Also, starting in 2009,
all Novice Youth class winners will receive World Championship titles and buckles for their efforts.
The show will also feature our popular and successful line-up of World Championship Youth events,
along with a select number of Amateur and Open classes. These classes will include Cutting,
Reining, Roping and Working Cow Horse. Also featured will be Team Sorting and Team Penning.
The second installment of the show will run in the fall.
It is set for November 2 – 14. Most of the Amateur and Open
World Championship classes—with the exception of Cutting,
Reining, Roping and Working Cow Horse, Team Sorting
and Team Penning— will be part of the APHA Fall World
Championship Show.
Included in the fall show will be an expanded program of
“Slot classes,” offering exciting paybacks based on paid “slot”
reservations. And that’s not all. We’ll also see some exciting new
Breeders’ Futurity events. I will give you further details as plans
develop, so stay tuned.
The Breeders’ Futurity is a prestigious competition featuring
the finest American Paint Horses and exhibitors in the world.
They will compete in a select slate of classes designed to
showcase the offspring of APHA Breeders’ Trust-subscribed
stallions and the mares bred to these stallions. For details,
visit apha.com/breedersfuturity.
Also, thanks to your involvement, the American Paint Horse
Foundation had a great year, with a 97 percent increase in its
major fundraising projects. A new therapeutic riding initiative has also been established.
We are currently working with the Foundation on a very exciting outing at Convention 2009 in
Colorado Springs. It will include a trail ride, dinner dance, auction and therapeutic riding demonstration at a nearby
stable. We are expecting several regional clubs in the area to participate. And most exciting of all, we expect to have
guests who are not currently members, but will join us for the ride to see what APHA is all about. This is a chance for
us all to be great ambassadors for our association and help our a great cause at the same time.
With our good news also come challenges. Certainly, we at APHA, like the rest of the horse industry, are
feeling the pinch of the economic situation of our world today. But it is encouraging that we are growing a
steady base of dedicated, multi-year members. We are also continuing to reach out to potential new members
with innovative programs. By maintaining the members we have and recruiting others to join us, we can make
improvements in 2009, and we’ll need your help. We all need to be APHA ambassadors.
People like you got us here and will carry us to new heights in the future. I look forward to our continued
work together.
Sincerely,
John Corbin
APHA President
APHA Perseveres in Troubled Economy
4
The now-official recession, which had its
beginning in December 2007, certainly
had an impact on APHA and its members
in 2008. But the past year also had milestones,
highlights and innovations designed
to carry the Association forward into a
hopefully better 2009.
The Association continued its work to keep
APHA on the technological forefront and provide
members with more on-line services.
APHA’s Information Technology team developed
and launched a Show Management Services
Program that enabled show secretaries
and managers to verify exhibitor memberships
instantly on-line. Summer marked the 5-year
anniversary of on-line foal registration. This
popular process has grown from just 9% of
total registrations in 2004 to almost 24% in
2008. APHA is developing ways to make this
process even faster and easier.
Feature articles and cover stories about
APHA and American Paint Horses appeared
in many premier equine publications, including
Western Horseman, Horse & Rider, Horse Illustrated,
Cowboys & Indians, American Cowboy,
The Equine Journal, NewWestern, Quarter
Horse News, The Trail Rider, Western Horse,
NRHA Reiner, Young Rider, Equestre, and other
publications around the world. The value of
this editorial coverage combined with newspaper
articles, and radio and television coverage
is estimated to exceed $640,000.
Reaching the $3 million sire mark is a rare
accomplishment in just about every equine
discipline. Paint racing saw two stand-out
sires—Texas Hero, owned by Buddy Albin of
Denton, Texas, and Judys Lineage, owned by
father and son Henry and Chuck Bowlan, respectively,
of Tecumseh, Oklahoma—achieve
this distinction in 2008.
Got Country Grip captured the interest of
sports fans all over the world as he continued
his quest in 2008 for the world record for consecutive
undefeated races.The 5-year-old Solid
Paint-Bred gelding secured his 16th win during
an allowance race in March, tying the
North American record of races won held by
Thoroughbred greats Cigar, Citation, Hallowed
Dreams and Mister Frisky. In April, he
attempted to become one of only two racehorses
in modern history to win 17 consecutive
races. Bust N Moves, a 4-year-old gray
Solid Paint-Bred gelding earned his first win of
the year and proved to be the spoiler of “Grip’s”
winning streak in front of a record-setting
crowd at Remington Park. Major sports media
picked up on Got Country Grip’s run into the
record books and Paint racing received more
mainstream press coverage than ever before.
Several long-term projects were implemented
in 2008 and paid off in a big way.
Early in the year, APHA began a registration
incentive for both Regular Registry and Solid
Paint-Breds that continues to offer a discounted
fee for Paint Horses 2 years old and
older. APHA encouraged owners to take
advantage of the opportunity to register older
Paint Horses at a greatly reduced rate. The second
portion of the Registration Incentive continues
to allow current owners to transfer ownership
of a registered American Paint Horse
multiple times for a one-time fee of $15. This
incentive program resulted in 2,472 additional
registrations in 2008.
In 2008, Paint Horse Journal writer
Abigail Wilder developed a monthly series
of exercise and nutritional tips designed
specifically to help subscribers get in shape
to become better and healthier riders.
On-line exercise videos, monthly logs, and
suggestions to supersize the workouts were
available via painthorsejournal.com.
APHA members and their horses made
news throughout the year. In January, the
Guinness Book of World Records registered an
11-year-old Paint mare, JJS Summer Breeze,
as having the longest tail at 12.5 feet.
Big Chex To Cash was named to join the
Breyer ® stable in 2009 as the most recent reining
addition to Breyer’s product line-up since
another Paint Horse, Colonels Smokingun,
was honored in 2002. At only six years old, the
stunningly gorgeous dappled palomino overo
Big ChexTo Cash has lifetime earnings of over
$200,000 and holds the title to multiple
national reining championships. Sired by
Nu Chex To Cash (AQHA) and out of Snip
O Gun (AQHA), Big Chex To Cash is owned
by 23 Partnership, stands at stud in San
Marcos, California, and was pictured on the
In 2008, the youngest member on the
APHA membership roll was Noah Burton
Williams of Mackay, Queensland, Australia,
born February 25, 2008. Noah is the first-born
of Richard and Cynthia Williams, and a thirdgeneration
member of the APHA. Another
youth who made noise for APHA in 2008 was
reiner Jason Kvols. The Steamboat Springs,
Colorado, native won APHA World Championship
titles in Youth 14-18 and Senior Reining
in June, followed shortly by the USEF
National Youth Reining Championships with
his Paint Horse mare, Sunny Spotacular.
Christine Gordon, of Evergreen, Colorado,
was named Youth of the Year by the National
Reining Horse Youth Association (NRHyA).
The 14-year-old active AjPHA member and
avid Paint Horse reining competitor received
the honor for her outstanding participation on
her Paint Horse, Smart First Move, in the
NRHyA Varsity Reining program. Christine
got her start with AjPHA four years ago, has
served as a National Director since 2006 and
was the 2006-2007 Zone 3 representative. She
serves as the voice for all AjPHA members in
Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota,
South Dakota and Wyoming.
Chuck Stuart of Tuttle, Oklahoma, was
recognized by APHA for being the second
Ride America ® participant to reach the
10,000-hour level in the program’s history.
Stuart logged his remarkable number of
hours aboard his 9-year-old sorrel tovero
gelding Pretty And Cool. He and “Toby”
rode the state parks in eastern Oklahoma,
earning double program hours.
After devoting more than 25 years to
raising quality Paints and advancing the
American Paint Horse breed, country-rock
legend Charlie Daniels received the prize of
a lifetime in 2008 at his Twin Pines
Ranch—a set of healthy, twin Paint fillies.
The now spunky and vivacious yearling
twins, sired by ranch stallion HLF Smokin
Ace and out of Ms Paseos County AQHA,
were born in the fields of the Lebanon,
Tennessee, ranch on April 23. According to
the APHA database, the Association has
registered only 323 sets of twins since its
inception in 1962.
Member Cornelious “Paul” Cleveland,
73, of Houston, Texas, was inducted into
the Cowboys of Color Hall of Fame in
2008. The trainer has been turning out top
roping horses that excel in rodeo and horse
show competition for decades, including
several Paint Horses and the Association
awarded him a certificate for his lifetime
Show and Rodeo officials.
achievements with Paint Horses. One of
Cleveland’s first successes with Paints came
with Allen Star Dust, a brown tobiano stallion
owned by Napoleon Allen of Houston,
Texas. The horse was foaled in 1962—
the year that APHA’s predecessor—the
American Paint Stock Horse Association—
was formed.
More than 130 equestrians rode for a
cause May 3, when they joined the American
Paint Horse Association and Benbrook
Stables for their second annual “Saddle Up!
for St. Jude” benefit trail ride and auction
in Benbrook, Texas. The group raised more
than $18,000 for St. Jude Children’s
Research Hospital, which treats and works
to find cures for children with cancer and
other catastrophic illnesses.
APHA’s annual two-week World Championship
Paint Horse Show run made its stop at
the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort
Worth, Texas, June 21 through July 5. The
event saw 1,289 Paint Horses and 4,021
entries from across the world compete in a
record 187 events—164 of which were World
Championship classes.
Amateur Alisa Bernhard of Germantown,
Wisconsin, and her homegrown gelding,
Fleetstreet Max, set a new World Show
record by earning 21 lifetime World Championships.
2008 was also an Olympic year,
and marked the third Paint World Games.
and The Dutch Diamonds.
In an effort to allow a longer period of time
for young horses to mature before competing
on a world-class level, APHA split off some
World Championship classes from its summer
show in 2008. APHA’s much-anticipated
inaugural Fall Championship Show was held
November 6–15 at the Will Rogers Memorial
Center. It featured World Championship title
classes for weanling and yearling halter, yearling
longe line and 2-year-old performance
horses and showcased new added-money and
jackpot classes, slot classes and select Challenge
and Sweepstakes classes.
“It was a very good first step for a complete
Fall Show,” said exhibitor and APHA
National Director Ron Shelly. “The relaxed
environment and time to exercise horses
inside was a big plus. Looking back ten years
from now this will be considered an extremely
important step in growing our Association
and our World Show venue.”
The horse show included 873 entries and
503 horses in 85 classes from 38 U.S. states
and Canadian provinces, as well as from
Australia, Italy, Mexico and Sweden, and paid
out $436,909 in added money. ■
Distinguished Service Award
Colorado man earns highest honor from the
American Paint Horse Association
Don Manuello accepts the Distinguished Service Award, the American
Paint Horse Association’s top honor for its members, from APHA President
John Corbin.
Don Manuello of Sterling, Colorado, was presented with APHA’s highest
member honor, the Distinguished Service Award, at the organization’s
annual convention and membership meeting in San Diego, California. This
award is given to a special APHA member who has helped the Association
make significant strides through the years. Manuello was recognized in 2008
for his more than 20 years of exemplary service to APHA in an effort to
advance the Association and improve the breed both locally and nationally.
During his more than 20 years of membership and service to the Association,
Manuello spent 11 of those years, 1990-2001, as an APHA National
Director. He has also served as director and president of the High Plains Paint
Horse Club, director of the Rocky Mountain Paint Horse Association and a
member of the Zone 3 Coordinating Committee, National Western Club,
Judges Committee of the National Western Stock Show and Equine Committee
of the National Western Stock Show—all of which directly affect the
equine industry in his home state of Colorado. In addition to these duties,
Manuello spent more than 15 years as the media director for the equine
industry’s Color Breed Council.
Manuello’s extensive knowledge of the Paint Horse breed and tireless work
ethic led him to serve as a ringmaster or ring steward for 22 consecutive
APHA World Championship Horse Shows, along with numerous other large
horse shows across the country.
While he continues to ring steward today, Manuello has served as APHA’s
vice chairman of the Judges Committee for 10 years and as a contributing
member of the Association’s Nominating Committee, Professional Horseman’s
Committee and the Rules Committee.
“There are countless situations beyond the recorded ‘official’ positions Don
has held where he was the driving force behind the success for our breed,
judges and members,” said fellow APHA-member and friend Karen Banister
of Brighton, Colorado. “Only the individuals blessed by him at that single
moment in time will remember his actions. But, for those people, his personal
effect on their lives will never be forgotten.” ■
Outstanding Regional Clubs
Gold Star Clubs The Association recognized outstanding clubs for their
contributions to the Paint Horse industry and their communities by honoring
them with Gold Star status. These clubs maintain their status for five years
and may reapply during the fifth year. Gold Star Clubs have a star next to
their name to indicate their status.
President’s Clubs of Distinction APHA selects the President’s Clubs
of Distinction award winners from the Gold Star clubs. The winning clubs
exemplify the qualities of a premier regional club through services to their members,
Incentive Programs
Breeders’ Trust has another million-dollar year
For the sixth consecutive year, APHA’s Breeders’
Trust program paid out more than $1 million for
Paint Horses with performance records. With a
record-breaking $1,176,454.14, the incentive program
for Paint Horse owners, exhibitors, racers and
breeders in 2008 boasted an increased payout of more
than $22,673 above the figure for 2007.
Breeders’ Trust funds are based on a point system,
with each point being worth a specific amount of
money. The 2008 value was $15.66 per point. Yearly
dividends are paid to subscribed stallion owners, foal Bodacious Enterprise
nominators and recorded owners of horses enrolled
in the program.
In the Breeders’ Trust program, the stallion subscriber
receives 20 percent of the dividend, the foal
nominator 10 percent and the foal’s recorded owner on
December 31 of the showing year receives 70 percent.
The Number One horse by money earned for
Zippos Sensation
2008 is Bodacious Enterprise, a 2003 sorrel overo
mare by Iron Enterprise AQHA out of Clearly Bodacious AQHA. Owned by Robert
and Patricia Ross of Grayslake, Illinois, and shown by their daughter, Jamie, the winner
earned the distinction by collecting 1,212 points throughout 2008, and ended the
year with $18,974.56 in incentive money. Jamie’s twin sister, Jennifer, and her 2003
sorrel overo mare, Shes Alotta Splash, came within five points of her sister to win the
Number Two title.
For an unprecedented eighth year, the stallion that sired the most money-earning
Breeders’ Trust foals was Zippos Sensation, a 1993 sorrel overo stallion owned by
Simons Show Horses, LLC of Aubrey, Texas. One hundred and fourteen of his get
earned $106,222.55 in 2008. ■
prior to the competition, $3,000 was up for grabs at
APHA Zone Shows and select international shows. In 2008,
42 Paints received Gelding Plus payouts.
APHA’s 2008 Paint Preferred Program offered cash
incentives to Paint Horses that competed in select National
competitions. This included events such as the National
Snaffle Bit Association World Championship Show in the
Open 3-Year-Old Western Pleasure and Open 3-Year-Old
Hunter Under Saddle class and the National Reining Horse
Association Futurity's Open division. No money was paid
out in this program in 2008, and the program will not be
offered in 2009. ■
Paint racing “Grips” the nation in 2008
Paint racing proved to have another exciting year full of continued
growth, new records, top performers and major news coverage during
2008. The racing program saw 573 Paint Horses start in 668 APHArecognized
races across 18 states, competing for more than $5 million.
Staying on track with the previous year, Got Country Grip and SM
Country Snowman reached new heights on their way to being named
Paint racing World Champions.
This past year was Got Country Grip’s fourth year dominating the
track. In the course of 2008, the 2003 Solid Paint-Bred tied the modern
day North American record on the track for all breeds as he won
his 16th consecutive race. On the way to victory, Grip’s name was seen
worldwide as his story was picked up by news organizations including
the Associated Press, USA Today, ESPN, NBC, Fox and many others.
The gelding, owned by Jimmy Maddux of Weatherford, Texas,
was named World Champion
Solid Paint-Bred for
the fourth consecutive
year, thus setting an additional
new record. On his
way to re-writing the
record books, Grip earned
$287,028—making him
the highest money-earning
paint racehorse in history.
Also finishing 2008 on a
high note was SM Country
Snowman. The 2005
loudly-colored overo Paint
earned his second World
Champion Regular Registry
title in as many years.
Included in his many accolades,
SM Country Snow-
man, owned by Rafter SM Ranch of Wagoner, Oklahoma, became the
highest earning 3-year-old Paint racehorse of all time, and the only to
break the $250,000 mark. With his lifetime earnings at $250,861 at
the year’s end, the stallion’s impact on Paint racing has only begun as he
will stand at stud in 2009.
Another exciting move for Paint racing was the redesign of the
industry’s magazine—Paint Racing—which is devoted entirely to the
sport of Paint racing and barrel racing. For all the information on the
program, visit paintracing.com. ■
AjPHA continues to build tomorrow’s leaders
28
AjPHA leaders met in San Diego, California, in 2008 to discuss future activities.
The American Junior Paint Horse Association continues to grow strong, thanks to the
efforts of members who have participated in leadership and community service initiatives
throughout 2008.
Throughout Sammie Jo Stone’s 2007-2008 presidential term, her Presidential Service Project,
Be A Lifesaver, was aimed at helping people and animals that have been involved in a
natural disaster, such as a fire, flood or even an earthquake.
The goal was to encourage AjPHA members and clubs to simply donate items such as food,
clothing, first-aid kits and animal supplies to their local Red Cross. Local Paint Horse clubs
could host canned food drives at horse shows and riding events, or become certified in CPR.
The AjPHA regional club that exhibited the most dedication, effort and caring attitude
toward the project was awarded the From the Heart Award, a $500 cash award sponsored
by Markel Insurance. In 2008, the award was presented to the Mississippi Junior Paint Horse
Club and its members at the 2008 World Championship Paint Horse Show.
MjPHC members raised money for the American Red Cross by making pattern books for
the Dixie Nationals, selling t-shirts and holding a cake auction. The service project hit close
to home for many youth in the club. In early 2008, Mississippi was hit by several tornados,
and the club’s donations helped their local communities with relief efforts.
Another great learning opportunity for Junior members in 2008 was the annual Youth
Leadership Conference, held in San Diego, California, in conjunction with the APHA
National Convention. AjPHA members travel from across the nation to attend this conference
each year. Conference attendees learned how they could complete tasks more efficiently
by working together, heard a presentation on preparing for college and public speaking and
finished a great day with a lesson in wardrobe, posture and grooming.
Conference attendees also were able to tour the San Diego Zoo and Coronado Beach.
After a sandcastle building contest at the beach, the Southern California Paint Horse Club
treated attendees to a cookout.
With nearly 7,000 members, AjPHA promotes youth involvement with American
Paint Horses worldwide. AjPHA is committed to producing America’s finest young
equestrians who are strong in moral character and active in their communities and regional
clubs. ■
A Message from the
American Paint Horse Foundation Director
I am happy to report to you that the American Paint Horse Foundation is doing “well” and
doing “good.”
Doing “well,” is how we’re doing. In 2008, we experienced one of our best fundraising years on
record. In addition, we are creating awareness and gaining recognition for the wonderful initiatives
we’ve established. Add to that, a clearly defined mission and set of goals, and you can be assured
that the American Paint Horse Foundation will continue to do well for the future.
Doing “good,” is what we’re doing. We’ve established a historymaking
$25,000 therapeutic riding fund, simply by asking generous
people for their support. Regional Clubs, like the Oklahoma
Paint Horse Club, have stepped forward to become the program’s
biggest benefactor and driver. We have visited several thousand
school children to teach them about Paint Horses in public school
classrooms. We’ve saddled up more than 1,500 kids on Paint
Horses for the first time in their lives, and we have a youth
scholarship program that has given out more than a half million
dollars since it was established.
As you are aware, Paint Horses have the power to inspire us.
When we have a horse at the end of a lead rope, we attract attention.
People love horses, especially Paints, and see goodness when
they look at our horses. Thousands of people want to reach out and
touch our horses, and countless children and adults want to ride.
That beauty and attraction that our horses possess also help
inspire people to do great things. It’s the reason we were able to
raise $30,000 the past two years on benefit trail rides for the
children of St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Paint people
and their friends just want to partner up with their horses to help.
If you are a Foundation friend who has supported us in the past, please be assured that your
generosity and hard work are touching lives in many significant ways.
If you’re new to our organization, I invite you to join us on our mission to improve our world
through the “Power of Paints.”
Please help us do “well” so we can continue to do “good.”
Sincerely,
Jerry Circelli
APHF Director
A Message from the
American Paint Horse Foundation President
I have had the pleasure over the past several years to visit with many of our trainers to enlist their help
for our “Find A Trainer” program.
This has become one of our most successful programs, not only because it has helped raise over
$91,000 over the past decade, but also because it links horse owners with Paint Horse trainers.
It becomes a win/win/win situation, where the Foundation gets support for its youth scholarship program,
trainers grow their businesses, and horse owners find places where they can get their horses schooled.Through
the "Find a Trainer" program, the American Paint Horse Foundation
works with horse trainers who allow fees, normally charted for their
services, to be donated directly to the Foundation. Through the
Foundation, interested horse owners purchase the services of a trainer
to work with their horse for one month for $500. The funds are
donated to the Foundation and used for youth scholarships. Trainers
to their business.
• Valuable listings in direct mail to thousands of Paint owners
and APHA members.
gift item.
• Extra exposure in 2009, as the program receives unprecedented
publicity.
scholarship program.
Horse owners benefit these ways:
• They can find a talented trainer, dedicated to advancing the American Paint Horse breed.
• Owners do business with a trainer with whom they share something in common – Paint Horses and
an interest in helping our youth.
• Owners become a valued friend of the Foundation.
• The knowledge that they are helping develop our leaders of tomorrow through the Foundation’s
youth scholarship program.
• Certificate to display proudly in their office and barn.
• Free Foundation gift for their support.
JESSICA HEIN
American Paint Horse Foundation
envisions a better world on the horizon
Thanks to the efforts of countless friends and benefactors of
the American Paint Horse Foundation, the charitable organization
experienced one of its best fundraising years to date.
Recently, the Foundation re-emphasized its mission and
expanded its mission to do good and improve our world
through “The Power of Paints.”
Specifically, the Foundation’s goals include:
• fostering positive youth development;
• promoting healthy lifestyles;
• improving lives and communities through interaction
with Paint Horses;
• instilling pride in the heritage of the American Paint
Horse and APHA;
• and funding research that ensures the health and vitality
of the American Paint Horse.
To its credit, the Foundation has awarded more than
$530,000 in youth scholarships since it was formed. It has
also helped subsidize APHA’s larger-than-lifesize statue in
front of its headquarters and is undertaking ambitious new
projects, such as supporting therapeutic riding programs
involving Paint Horses.
Proof that the “spirit of giving” is higher now than ever before
to the Foundation can be found in its recent fundraisers,
which include:
• The New Holland Tractor giveaway, with a record $39,500
raised;
• A filly fundraiser of more than $26,000;
• An unprecedented, new therapeutic riding fund established
at $25,000;
• World Show warm-up class participation, which has netted
an all-time high of more than $15,000 for the Foundation
and will continue at both the Summer and Fall World
Championship Shows;
• An APHA Workshop Auction that raised over $7,500.
An enhanced “Find a Trainer” program was also launched
and serves as a great Foundation fundraiser, but also helps
link horse owners with outstanding Paint Horse trainers
around the country. In this program, trainers donate one
month of service while horse owners pay a training fee
directly to the Foundation scholarship program. This
enhanced program will create greater exposure for generous
trainers. Horse owners, in turn, will be able to select from
some of the finest Paint Horse trainers in the country.
The Foundation has also added a “Heritage Tree” at APHA
headquarters. The tree will commemorate the people with
vision and horses with heart and talent who have made APHA
a world-class breed organization. Past APHA President Bill
Hittle of Hugoton, Kansas, stepped forward at a recent
APHA Convention in San Diego, California, to buy the first
commemorative leaf at $500.
Also at that APHA Convention gathering, the “spirit of
giving” among APHA members was underscored during a
formal “Presidential Inauguration Dinner.”
Oklahoma Paint Horse Club members Brad Perkins and
Kevin Hardcastle enlisted the help of Past APHA President and
auctioneer Tom Elliott for an impromptu auction during the
dinner to benefit the Foundation’s therapeutic riding initiative.
Earlier in the year, during Workshop in Irving, Texas, Perkins,
Hardcastle and member Ron Shelly were part of a “bidding war”
that resulted in the sale of a St. Jude necktie that brought in
$1,300 for St. Jude’s and the Foundation. The tie had been won
and donated back several times at the APHA Workshop.
That tie resurfaced during Convention, went up for sale
and was sold to Lori Nevin of Des Moines, Washington, for
$1,000. The money was added to $10,000 already donated by
the Oklahoma Paint Horse Club to benefit therapeutic riding,
which ended the year with $25,000 pledged.
Add it all up, and major fundraisers nearly doubled for
2008 over the previous year, up 97 percent, and totaled more
than $120,000.
Thank you to our donors, friends and supporters who keep
the American Paint Horse Foundation—the “heart” of the
American Paint Horse Association—beating strong. ■
APHA Past President Bill Hittle and his wife, Linda, of
Hugoton, Kansas, stepped forward to buy the first leaf on the
Foundation’s new “Heritage Tree.” American Paint Horse
Foundation President Cheryl Newman, center, gladly accepted.
A necktie that was sold, donated back and resold for a total
of $1,300 during APHA Workshop last spring in Irving,
Texas, made its way back to Convention in San Diego,
California. Oklahoma Paint Horse Club members Brad
Perkins, left, and Kevin Hardcastle, the tie owners, sold it
with the help of auctioneer and APHA Past President Tom
Elliott. Lori Nevin, second from left, of Des Moines,
Washington, bought the tie for $1,000. Money will be used
to help fund the Foundation’s therapeutic riding initiatives.
Notes to Financial Statements
For the Years Ended December 31, 2008 and 2007
1. Organization and summary of significant accounting policies
Organization
The American Paint Horse Association, Inc. (The Association) is a not-forprofit
membership organization incorporated under the laws ofTexas and exempt
from income tax under Section 501(c)(5) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.
The Association was formed in 1962 to collect, record, and preserve the pedigree
of Paint Horses. In addition, the Association is responsible for promoting and
disseminating knowledge and information related to the Paint Horse breed.
Basis of Accounting and Revenue Recognition
The accounts are maintained and the financial statements have been
prepared on the accrual basis of accounting in accordance with accounting
principles generally accepted in the United States of America. Membership
dues and subscription fee revenues are recognized over the applicable
membership or subscription period. All other revenue is recognized in the
period in which the services are provided. Breeders Trust support is recognized
as a temporarily restricted net asset and will be released from restrictions in
the applicable distribution years. (See Note 2, Breeders Trust Program)
Cash
For purposes of these financial statements, the Association considers cash to
be all cash on hand, cash in banks in demand accounts, cash in investment
brokerage money market accounts, as well as amounts deposited in U.S.
Treasury backed money market accounts. Cash, restricted, is cash deposited
specifically for the Breeders Trust program.
Investments
The Association carries investments in marketable securities with readily
determinable fair values and all investments in debt securities at their
fair values in the statement of financial position. Unrealized gains and
losses are included in the change in net assets in the accompanying statement
of activities.
Inventory
APHA General Store Collection and Promotional inventory is carried
at the lower cost or market determined by first-in, first-out method.
Annual merchandise write-downs to market of all items determined to be
slow moving or obsolete are reflected on the statements of activities under
Program Services, General store. Write-downs for the years ending
December 31, 2008 and 2007 were $58,577 and $36,293 respectively.
Property, Equipment, Depreciation and Collections
Property and equipment is stated at cost. Depreciation is computed
using the straight-line method over the estimated useful lives of the
related assets, which range from 3-30 years. The Association possesses
various prints, original paintings and bronze sculptures purchased and
carried at their cost or received as unrestricted gifts and carried at their
estimated fair value. These works of art are on display and were not purchased
or received for the purpose of re-sale. (See Note 5, Property And
Equipment)
43
Federal IncomeTax
The Association is an exempt organization under Section 501(c)(5) of the
U.S. Internal Revenue Code. Income earned from the performance of its
Internal Revenue Service exempt purpose is not subject to federal income tax.
Income in excess of $1,000 earned from its non-exempt purpose, (unrelated
business income), would be taxable at normal U.S. corporate tax rates. The
Association earned no taxable income from unrelated business activities for the
years ending December 31, 2008 and 2007.
Basis of Presentation
Financial statement presentation follows Statement of Financial Accounting
Standards (SFAS) No. 117. The Association reports information regarding its
financial position and activities according to three classes of net assets: unrestricted,
temporarily restricted, and permanently restricted net assets. The Association has
no permanently restricted net assets.
Concentration of Credit Risk
Financial instruments that potentially subject the Association to
concentrations of credit risk consist principally of cash in reputable
financial institutions located in Fort Worth, Texas. Occasionally, its cash
deposits are in excess of the $100,000, the maximum amount of coverage
provided by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Congress has
temporarily increased the FDIC deposit insurance from $100,000 to
$250,000 per depositor through December 31, 2009.
Use of Estimates
The preparation of financial statements in conformity with accounting
principles generally accepted in the United States of America requires management
to make estimates and assumptions that affect certain reported amounts and
disclosures. Accordingly, actual results could differ from those estimates.
2. Breeders Trust Program
The Association provides an added incentive for Paint Horse owners who
exhibit their horses. The Breeders Trust is a program that will pay cash awards for
points earned at Association approved events by nominated horses. The Breeders
Trust is accounted for as a restricted program and as such is reported in the
Association’s financial statements as temporarily restricted net assets due to the
nature of the program. Breeders Trust award payouts for 2008 and 2007 were
the breed’s accomplishments and artifacts associated with the outstanding
bloodlines of the breed and individuals and institutions who contributed
to these accomplishments. The Foundation resulted from a merger in 2005
between the American Paint Horse Heritage Foundation and the American
Paint Horse Association Youth Development Foundation and was
accounted for as a pooling of interest under accounting principles generally
accepted in the United States of America. It is chartered as a non-profit
corporation in the state of Texas and is exempt under U.S. Internal Revenue
Service Revenue Code 501(c)(3) as a charitable publicly supported
temporarily restricted net assets; and permanently restricted net assets. Contributions
received are recorded as unrestricted, temporarily restricted or permanently
restricted support depending on the existence and/or nature of any donor
