APHA Perseveres in Troubled Economy
4
The now-official recession, which had its
beginning in December 2007, certainly
had an impact on APHA and its members
in 2008. But the past year also had milestones,
highlights and innovations designed
to carry the Association forward into a
hopefully better 2009.
The Association continued its work to keep
APHA on the technological forefront and provide
members with more on-line services.
APHA’s Information Technology team developed
and launched a Show Management Services
Program that enabled show secretaries
and managers to verify exhibitor memberships
instantly on-line. Summer marked the 5-year
anniversary of on-line foal registration. This
popular process has grown from just 9% of
total registrations in 2004 to almost 24% in
2008. APHA is developing ways to make this
process even faster and easier.
Feature articles and cover stories about
APHA and American Paint Horses appeared
in many premier equine publications, including
Western Horseman, Horse & Rider, Horse Illustrated,
Cowboys & Indians, American Cowboy,
The Equine Journal, NewWestern, Quarter
Horse News, The Trail Rider, Western Horse,
NRHA Reiner, Young Rider, Equestre, and other
publications around the world. The value of
this editorial coverage combined with newspaper
articles, and radio and television coverage
is estimated to exceed $640,000.
Reaching the $3 million sire mark is a rare
accomplishment in just about every equine
discipline. Paint racing saw two stand-out
sires—Texas Hero, owned by Buddy Albin of
Denton, Texas, and Judys Lineage, owned by
father and son Henry and Chuck Bowlan, respectively,
of Tecumseh, Oklahoma—achieve
this distinction in 2008.
Got Country Grip captured the interest of
sports fans all over the world as he continued
his quest in 2008 for the world record for consecutive
undefeated races.The 5-year-old Solid
Paint-Bred gelding secured his 16th win during
an allowance race in March, tying the
North American record of races won held by
Thoroughbred greats Cigar, Citation, Hallowed
Dreams and Mister Frisky. In April, he
attempted to become one of only two racehorses
in modern history to win 17 consecutive
races. Bust N Moves, a 4-year-old gray
Solid Paint-Bred gelding earned his first win of
the year and proved to be the spoiler of “Grip’s”
winning streak in front of a record-setting
crowd at Remington Park. Major sports media
picked up on Got Country Grip’s run into the
record books and Paint racing received more
mainstream press coverage than ever before.
Several long-term projects were implemented
in 2008 and paid off in a big way.
Early in the year, APHA began a registration
incentive for both Regular Registry and Solid
Paint-Breds that continues to offer a discounted
fee for Paint Horses 2 years old and
older. APHA encouraged owners to take
advantage of the opportunity to register older
Paint Horses at a greatly reduced rate. The second
portion of the Registration Incentive continues
to allow current owners to transfer ownership
of a registered American Paint Horse
multiple times for a one-time fee of $15. This
incentive program resulted in 2,472 additional
registrations in 2008.
In 2008, Paint Horse Journal writer
Abigail Wilder developed a monthly series
of exercise and nutritional tips designed
specifically to help subscribers get in shape
to become better and healthier riders.
On-line exercise videos, monthly logs, and
suggestions to supersize the workouts were
available via painthorsejournal.com.
APHA members and their horses made
news throughout the year. In January, the
Guinness Book of World Records registered an
his wife, Joanne, traveled 700 miles from
Colorado Springs, Colorado in May, to
Jude” Trail Ride.
Big Chex To Cash was named to join the
Breyer ® stable in 2009 as the most recent reining
addition to Breyer’s product line-up since
another Paint Horse, Colonels Smokingun,
was honored in 2002. At only six years old, the
stunningly gorgeous dappled palomino overo
Big ChexTo Cash has lifetime earnings of over
$200,000 and holds the title to multiple
national reining championships. Sired by
Nu Chex To Cash (AQHA) and out of Snip
O Gun (AQHA), Big Chex To Cash is owned
by 23 Partnership, stands at stud in San
Marcos, California, and was pictured on the
