THE COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY OF THE<br />

15 TH CENTURY MADONNA WITH A CHILD<br />

FROM KSIĄŻNICE WIELKIE AS AN EX-<br />

AMPLE OF NON-INVASIVE METHOD OF<br />

EXAMINATION OF A MASTERPIECE<br />

Dagny Dobrowolska<br />

Priate practice <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sculpture conseration<br />

Krakow Poland<br />

The goal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> presentation is to show<br />

scientific possibilities connected with<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g computed tomography as a non<strong>in</strong>vasive<br />

method <strong>of</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> a piece<br />

<strong>of</strong> art. Results <strong>of</strong> such exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

15 th century wooden sculpture <strong>of</strong> Madonna<br />

with Child from Książnice Wielkie<br />

are discussed.<br />

A wooden sculpture <strong>of</strong> Madonna with<br />

Child (2nd and 3rd quarter <strong>of</strong> 15 th century)<br />

has been partly transformed several<br />

times. All <strong>the</strong> transformations may be<br />

divided to at least three stages. The first<br />

one took place probably <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Baroque<br />

period, <strong>the</strong> second one was a renovation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sculpture that took place <strong>in</strong> 1808,<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ally, probably at <strong>the</strong> very beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 20 th century (<strong>the</strong> last stage), two<br />

wooden crowns were put on Madonna’s<br />

and Child’s heads. Exact changes that<br />

were made – especially <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 19 th century<br />

– were impossible to establish. In particular,<br />

dierences between <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al sculpture<br />

and <strong>the</strong> later <strong>in</strong>sertions were obvious<br />

<strong>in</strong> many parts, but <strong>in</strong> some areas it was<br />

difficult to say which part was orig<strong>in</strong>al and<br />

which part was added later. To exam<strong>in</strong>e<br />

30<br />

this problem properly, it was decided to<br />

use <strong>the</strong> computed tomography.<br />

The results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ation made it<br />

possible to def<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> precise size <strong>of</strong> each<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 19 th century wooden <strong>in</strong>sertions,<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir present position <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> figure<br />

and <strong>the</strong>ir proportion to <strong>the</strong> preserved,<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>al Gothic part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sculpture. They<br />

also gave a lot <strong>of</strong> new <strong>in</strong>formation about<br />

<strong>the</strong> technology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gothic sculpture as<br />

well as <strong>the</strong> technology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> restoration<br />

that took place <strong>in</strong> 1808. The cross – sections<br />

also showed how well <strong>the</strong> particular<br />

parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sculpture are preserved<br />

– <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> deterioration caused by<br />

<strong>in</strong>sects, <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t and gesso<br />

layers, etc.<br />

The computed tomography <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 15 th<br />

Madonna with Child from Książnice Wielkie<br />

shows that this type <strong>of</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

can be eectively used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> contemporary<br />

art restoration. The exam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

is totally non-<strong>in</strong>vasive and as such, it is<br />

safe and it cannot damage a piece <strong>of</strong> art.<br />

Moreover, <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ation parameters<br />

can be precisely chosen and adjusted to<br />

a given object, which enables to exam<strong>in</strong>e<br />

<strong>the</strong> object <strong>in</strong> a very exact way and <strong>in</strong><br />

many aspects. Technology, state <strong>of</strong> preservation,<br />

and possible transformations<br />

can be identified. The tomography may<br />

be used for a wide variety <strong>of</strong> materials<br />

like wood, metal, stone, etc. Moreover, a<br />

3D view <strong>of</strong> an object, created on <strong>the</strong> basis<br />

<strong>of</strong> tomography, gives additional possibilities<br />

for <strong>the</strong> documentation <strong>of</strong> state <strong>of</strong><br />

preservation <strong>of</strong> a piece <strong>of</strong> art.
