It’s Miller Time

In this issue of the newsletter you will learn who are the 

dedicated members willing to serve on the Region’s Board 

of Directors for the upcoming year. Please take a look at 

their bio’s and plan to vote your preferences as soon as you 

receive your ballot. In accordance with our By-Laws, this 

year’s election will be handled via email. Any member who 

does not have an email will be mailed a hard copy ballot 

which should be returned promptly in order to be counted. 

We have some new faces willing to serve which should 

provide some fresh ideas and variety to our active schedule 

of events. Please vote. We have over 250 primary members 

and another 200 plus affiliates that can vote. We are hoping 

for a record turnout. 

Monterey Historic Week is now history. It was a great week 

with loads of great car stuff to run around and enjoy. We 

were fortunate enough to meet PCA friends from Wisconsin 

and enjoy a visit up to the Napa Valley the weekend before 

the Historics. Our hosts made arrangements for us to visit 

the fantastic Palmaz Winery and participate in a very fancy 

tasting. More importantly, Palmaz is the site of one of the 

premier Porsche Racing car collections in the country. Herr 

Palmaz invented the heart stent which he subsequently sold 

to my company J & J, which provided him with the funds 

to pursue and collect Porsche racing cars. In a separate 

exhibition hall in the winery, there are pristine examples of a 

Carrera Abarth, 907, 908’s, 910’s, Pooper, RSK and RS-60, 

a 917 and other rare prototypes such as the 1963 Porsche 

2000 GSGT (ice scraper). A very special treat is Vic Elford’s 

famous Targa Florio winning 907.Five of these cars will be part 

of the Quail Race Car Classic being held in conjunction with 

the Rennsport Celebration the weekend of October 14-16. 

The Quail Classic will feature approx. 190 of the most 

famous racing Porsches from collections all over the world 

including rare Porsche Museum examples. Several of our 

CCCR members are working the event as concierges or 

field stewards for the various collectors who are sending 

their prized possessions to the event. I am helping manage 

the pre-event public road tour for many of the racers, 

ANOTHER 918 STORY by Bruce Bero 

On Thursday evening prior to the “Concorso Italiano”, I was 

invited along with my two sons, Steven and Michael, to 

preview an intimate showing of the 918RSR concept super 

car at the “Chateau Julien” in beautiful Carmel Valley.The 

918RSR is not street-legal and like the 918 Spyder it has a 

V8 motor along with two electric motors allowing it to have 

unprecedented fuel economy and go from 0 to 60 in 3.0 

seconds or “less”! It was interesting to spend time with the 

Porsche executives and Weissach engineers and get the 

inside story on where sports car technology is headed. 

This will be hard to top but one can only try.

signed up to work the Rennsport event at Laguna Secca. 

Our Region is well represented for this superb weekend. 

On a separate topic, Sue and I recently attended the annual 

Johnson & Johnson Retirees Meeting held in Las Vegas. I 

was pleased to learn that the two Porsche Club’s support 

and sponsorship of the Gathering of Friends V held in July 

earned me the J & J Public Service Recognition award. In 

addition to a fancy trophy, there is a cash award of $1,000. 

I opted to have the check made out to Camp Hapitok which 

will allow me to ask for a similar matched fund award of 

another $1,000 for the Camp. This will be a fine start for the 

2012 event. 

BOARD MEETING NOTES – September 7, 2011 

Meeting was called to order by Vice President DeVries 

All members were present except Hill, Miller and Mills 

Minutes from the August Meeting was approved with 

corrections 

Membership – 262 Primary / 199 Affiliates for a total of 461 

Treasurer - New Member BBQ will cost about $2500. 

Region’s balance is $ 8,647.82. Ultrex has increased monthly 

costs by $75 starting in March. The PO Box at the UPS Store 

will be renewed for another year. 

Activities – There will be a drive after Breakfast Club on 

Saturday, September 10th with lunch at the Jack Ranch 

Café. 

Old Business – It was reported that we will have enough 

nominees for the upcoming 2012 Board elections. 

New Business - Hospice picked June 9, 2012 for the Avila 

Beach Concourse.

David and Ellen Ferguson invite you to an afternoon 

tech session at their wonderful home and business 

facility in the wine country of Paso Robles. They are 

the owners of Veracity Racing Data, a data acquisition 

systems company that installs, develops and supports

Exit 101 northbound at Spring Street. Turn right at the top of the ramp on to Niblick Rd. Stay on Niblick through 

the east side of Paso and six traffic lights. Niblick becomes Sherwood Rd as you cross over Creston Rd and 

then Sherwood becomes Fontana which then becomes Linne Rd as you go through a light industrial area and 

four 90 degree right/left turns. From the out skirts of town it’s approximately three miles to our shop at 5505 Linne 

Rd. Look for tan steel building with a red roof on the right. 

Okay, I am going to have to think about going back to a 911. 

Although I have not seen them in person yet, the 2012 911 

Carreras are very, very nice, IMHO. At this point in my life 

I am a “Boxster/Cayman kinda guy” but this model could 

change it back again. This brings me to another subject, I 

have had five different Porsches starting with a 914, then 

on to restoring a 356, a 911, a 944 and now a Boxster. So 

do I go back or do I move on.

me to better understand the 

different sides of Porsche. I 

think I will let the person who 

issues the purchase orders in 

our family decide.

Well, its about time! Flying Lizard was able to win its first 

race of the season at Laguna Seca. Watching on TV this 

time, it was a very tight race with the lead going back and 

forth between the #45 Porsche 911 RSR, both of the BMW 

M3 GTs and Risi Ferrari. In the end it was a literal battle 

between Bergmeister in the Flying Lizard and the Ferrari 

but the Porsche sustained 

the 6-hour battle to win the 

GT Class. However, the 

true winner of the GT Class 

was the Porsche 911 RSR 

Hybrid but it was only there 

for testing and not entered 

in the race. 

October is a crowded month for events. I hope most of you 

are going to join a lot us up in Monterey for Rennsport. Many 

in the club have volunteered to help at that event. See page 

15 for more information. I will be leading a pack of Porsches 

up the hill to Hearst Castle for a tour and photos, then a 

lunch in San Simeon. This should be a lot of fun. Of course 

there is the Breakfast Club on the second Saturday of the 

month at Dorn’s as well, and the tech session at Veracity 

Data Systems.

Sure enough. Sunday, November 13th is 

just around the corner. That’s the date, 

from 1 – 4:30 pm, for this year’s CCCR 

new member BBQ. We want all our members, 

old and new, to come and join in the 

fun, but especially, we want to see NEW 

members who have joined in the last 

year or who have missed previous years’ 

events. 

Yes, CCCR will provide the food and 

drink. This year, that will consist of a 

selection of grilled sausage appetizers, 

Santa Maria style tri-tip and chicken 

with all the appropriate trimmings. And 

for those of you of the vegetarian persuasion, 

we will provide a mixed, grilled veggie 

entree - IF you pre-order it when you 

register. 

As previously mentioned, in order to attend, 

you must tell us in ADVANCE that 

you are coming and how many others you

Bruce Bero 

Bruce has been a member of the CCCR/ 

PCA board for four years, serving this year as both 

Immediate Past-President, and Safety and Equipment 

Chair. He has been President for two of those years. 

His leadership has created improvements in all areas 

of the region. He currently serves on the Avila Beach 

Concours Committee. He is the proud father of twin sons 

who are also active CCCR/PCA members. If elected, 

he will continue to be an exceptional contributor to this 

region. 

Sanja Brewer 

Sanja is currently on the CCCR Board and has 

been Membership Director for CCCR/PCA for four 

years. She has been a member of CCCR-PCA for 

almost 5 years. Sanja was a member of the Hawaii 

Region PCA club from 1982 until 1993. During that 

time, she was very involved with SCCA club racing. She 

enjoys her association with our club and her current 

position. 

Paul L Fasching 

PCA member, 1980 – present. Over the years I 

have been a member of 3 different PCA regions. I did 

a lot of Time Trialing in my early PCA days, but don’t 

do that anymore. I am mostly a 914 person but I now 

drive a a boxster (the latest and greatest 914). I have 

been a member of CCCR since 1997 and served on 

the board from 1999 thru 2006. During that period I 

was newsletter editor and membership chairman and 

organized and hosted several new CCCR events. I 

have served as the club treasurer for the past 2 years. 

I would appreciate your vote for this coming election. 

Ken Finney 

I am a relative new comer to the PCA/CCCR. I 

have been a member for a little over two years, since I 

purchased my first Porsche, a 2007 Carrera S coupe. I

have been a car guy my whole life. I grew up in the SF 

Bay Area, first interested in custom cars and hot rods, 

then later getting involved in drag racing. I have lived in 

San Luis for almost 40 years now. I am a graduate of 

Cal Poly, with a degree in Accounting and I worked for 

over 28 years at the County of SLO. I retired five years 

ago and am now enjoying life. I enjoy the members 

and events put on by the CCCR and try to participate 

as much as possible. If elected to the CCCR Board, I 

will interact with the other board members to keep our 

chapter running smoothly. 

Marla Hill 

Marla has been involved with CCCR since she 

got her car back on Oct 25, 1999. Marla’s Porsche is 

named Patience. She fell in love with Porsches back 

in 1977 when her mother got a 914. Her father was a 

mechanic and she loved working on cars. Marla has 

enjoyed running the Goody Store and brings lots of 

new and original Porsche items to our club members. 

She has been the secretary for four years now and 

she likes that too. Her hubby of 37 years, Robert is 

a big help with all the fun events that our club puts 

on. Marla finds that the statement is very true when it 

comes to our Porsche club. ‘It’s not just the cars...it’s 

the people.” Come join the fun. 

Martin Howell 

Martin Howell currently serves on the CCCR 

Board as Assistant Activities Chairman. He has been 

a member of CCCR-PCA for about ten years and a 

member of the Board for three of those years. 

Bob “Kit” Kitamura 

A 16 year PCA member, Bob has been serving on 

the CCCR Board for the past two years and serving as 

the Editor of the award-winning Coastalaire publication. 

He has been a part of the Coastalaire production team 

10

for the last two and a half years. He has volunteered 

to help at many of the club’s events, such as the 

Buttonwillow Driver’s Education (Wind in the Willows), 

Avila Beach Concours, Gathering of Friends, he 

enjoys attending them as well. He also enjoys going 

to American Le Mans and Grand Am series races to 

watch the Porsche GT’s and prototypes race. Of the 5 

Porsches he has owned, he misses his ’63 356B the 

most, and so does his mechanic! He hopes to continue 

serving the membership of CCCR wherever he is 

needed. 

Joe Korpiel 

Joe has owned, driven & successfully raced 

Porsches since the early sixties. He is a founding 

member of the Portland Sports Car Club & raced a 356 

Super 90 during the first Rose Cup Race. At various 

times he has owned 911’s, Carreras, two 914-6’s, 

two 930 turbos. He presently owns a 2002 GT2 with 

less than 3000 miles on the odometer. He was on 

the Board of the POC in Southern California & won 

three championships campaigning a 914-6. He holds 

competition licenses & raced in IMSA, Trans-Am, FIA, 

national SCCA. He was a member of PCA in Southern 

California as well. He presently holds a competition 

license with NASA. He presently drives for TRG in 

Petaluma, http://www.theracersgroup.com/ he drives 

local events with an older 911 spec car. 

Jon Milledge 

Since moving to the Central Coast in 2007, Jon 

has been active in CCCR events and was appointed 

to the CCCR Board in 2008 to fill a vacancy. He 

was elected to the Board in 2009. As Driving Events 

Chairperson, he is responsible for organizing and 

managing our Drivers’ Education events at Buttonwillow 

Raceway. In 2009, he organized the region’s first PCA 

Driving Instructor program that resulted in thirteen 

PCA authorized instructors including himself. As a 

volunteer, he has assisted at the Avila Beach Concours 

(2007, 2008, and 2009). With his wife Vicki, he has 

attended several social events each year. They are 


regulars at the monthly breakfasts. If re-elected, he 

will continue to involve himself in supporting all types 

of CCCR events and working toward adding autocross 

events and a second Drivers’ Education event to our 

schedule. 

Dave Mills 

Dave Mills joined PCA in 1969 as a member of 

Monterey Bay Region.† Since then he has belonged to 

eight other regions, including CCCR three times. He 

has served in several offices in those regions, including 

President of both CCCR and Germany Region.† He 

was the principal mover in the resurrection of Germany 

Region in 1973, for which he was presented the Lazar- 

Blanchard trophy as PCA Enthusiast of the Year in 

1974.† He served as PCA Zone 10 Representative upon 

his return to the U. S. in 1978.† He has permanently 

retired to CCCR, and has served on its Board for the 

past three years. He intends to continue to serve the 

Region in all its various activities. 

Andrew Winterbottom 

After university, Andy joined Ford, was drafted, 

served in Vietnam and returned to Ford and married 

Susan. With several interim geographical “adjustments”, 

he and Susan relocated to Connecticut for IBM. 

There he purchased the first Porsche, 1999 Cabriolet 

prompting PCA and Connecticut Valley Region 

membership. He moved to California to start a dot-com 

firm, transferred to the Grand Prix Region and became 

a Boxster owner. Relocating to Lake Forest, Illinois 

for Motorola brought membership in the Chicago 

Region with increasing activity in autocross, DE, 

DE-instruction, volunteering and guest board 

meeting attendence. Andy also attended DE 

events put on by six other PCA regions ranging 

from Indiana to Florida to help break-in the 2007 

GT3. In January 2011, Susan and Andy graduated 

to Avila Beach and, transferred to the CCCR 

participating and volunteering for DE and the 

Gathering of Friends and meetings. Andy hopes 

to increasingly support the CCCR.

A DRIVE UP TO 

THE CASTLE 

Hearst Castle 

October 22 

This is your opportunity to actually drive your 

Porsche up to Hearst Castle. On Saturday, October 

22nd , the first twenty cars signed up and paid, will 

be able to drive up and park at the top of the hill. 

The visit to the enchanted hilltop will include a tour 

of Hearst Castle and a chance for you and your car 

to be photographed on the hill. After our personal 

group tour we will come back down the hill and 

have a buffet lunch at El Chorlito in San Simeon. 

You will be able to bring up one passenger in your 

car in addition to yourself. However, we can have 

a maximum of 50 people so some cars can have 

additional passengers. 

The $ 100 per car event cost will be donated to 

the restoration of the Morning Room Ceiling, a 15th Century Ceiling, that we will be able to see during 

our tour. The cost of lunch is not included in the 

event cost. 

Cost of Event - $100 per car, includes drive up the 

Hill, tour of the Castle and photo of 

the car. 

A specially prepared buffet lunch at 

El Chorlito Mexican Restaurant 

will be $22 per person. This will be 

a separate cost paid at the 

restaurant.

You may also hear the process of Flashing a DME referred to as “Chip” or “Chipping”, and that’s because the first generations 

of DME used ROM (Read Only Memory) chips that could not be re-programmed. Many “tuners” today still have to crack 

open the DME’s case and remove, re-flash, and re-solder the physical chip in Porsche models up to 2001. 

Today, some very exclusive “tuners” with state-of-the-art computing hardware and software can now read and reprogram 

your car’s ECU without opening its case. It’s all done through the DME’s existing 88-pin connector, even on the first 

generation 986 (Boxster) and 996 (Carrera).

ECU tuning for the most part can cost around $1,000 for a modern, water-cooled porsche. 

We can now offer ECU flashing for half that much! 

We have had great advances in ECU reprogramming in the last couple of years. 

Some services which were considered impossible on a Porsche’s DME, are now available to the general public. 

For special applications, such as race cars, we can now eliminate the immobilizer function, allowing the driver to not need 

the key to start the car. 

We are now also able to completely eliminate and remove the CLU (Central Locking Unit) and it’s (heavy) wiring harness 

under the driver’s seat which can easily get water damaged and go completely haywire when caught in a downpour while at 

the track, rendering the session if not the weekend a total loss and a very expensive event for the racer.

With the rolling landscape and park benches 

on a perfectly-groomed lawn, you might 

think you were in Bavaria, which is exactly 

what Porsche Cars North America intends 

with its Porsche Park-in-the-Paddock—located 

amongst the vintage race cars at Mazda Raceway 

Laguna Seca for Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV, 

October 14-16. This area, located behind the media 

center (where the tire companies usually set up for 

a race weekend), will feature an authentic German 

biergarten as well as German food and and a park 

atmosphere so Rennsport attendees can take a break 

from the on-track activity and absorb the experience. 

But Rennsport fans will still know that they are at a 

Porsche event, as the Park-in-the-Paddock will have 

plenty of sports car activity as well, according to 

Bernd Harling, Porsche’s Principal Communications 

Counsel and coordinator for Rennsport. 

“Besides the food and drink, our Park-in-the-Paddock 

will include a center stage where driver introductions 

and all the autograph sessions will take place and 

live music will be played, as well as the very popular 

model car display, photo opportunities with the CARS 

movie star Sally Carrera—maybe our most famous 

911—and a Porsche Sport Driving School activity center,” 

said Harling. 

“We also hope to have a sneak showing of a future 

Porsche model in the Park, but it’s a little too early to 

be able to confirm its appearance,” Harling teased. 

Other activities around the paddock are taking 

shape as well for the October event. “Porsche Motorsports 

North America, headquartered in Santa Ana, 

will have a display not only to show its modern and 

vintage race car parts and service capabilities, but 

to encourage the many Porsche race car owners to 

take advantage of the company’s free technical advice 

offered to anyone who asks,” said Harling. 

With the Porsche 911 being the featured race car 

of Rennsport IV, fans will also be able to view two 911

Rennsport Reunion IV 

Will Feature Porsche Park 

displays which help capture the history of this iconic 

sports car. The first is a special collection of the most 

significant 15 race cars in 911 history. The other 911 

display is being assembled by the Porsche Club of 

America, and proved to be very popular at Porsche 

Rennsport III at Daytona in 2007. In order to show 

the progression of the Porsche 911 model, the club 

has assembled 40 examples representing significant 

models across time. 

PCA will assist Rennsport Reunion IV with several 

activities: History of the Porsche 911 Display, 

Porsche Model-Specific Parking Corrals with Parade 

laps of the track, PCA Hospitality and Membership 

Center, two race groups: Rennsport Reunion Cup 

for Porsche Cup Cars and PCA Club Racing for PCA 

race cars, and PCA Volunteer Pool—workers to assist 

with the club’s involvement. Enhancing the Rennsport 

Reunion Cup race, Michelin Tire Company 

comes on board as the spec tire manufacturer for that 

exciting contest. 

The assembly of exceptional examples of 911 

production models for the History of the Porsche 911 

Display is well underway, representing the 911 model 

throughout its generational life. To apply to participate
