Business Matters
The Summer of 2012 is officially coming to an end, and we will soon be entering the final quarter of the
year. Even though the year will be over before we know it, the Chamber still has many outstanding
programs and events planned. These programs are designed to provide you with networking and
educational opportunities that will strengthen your business. I encourage you to take a look at the
calendar of events and plan to participate in these great activities.
The 22nd year of the Leadership Berkeley program will begin on September 18, 2012. This year’s class is
listed on page 15. We appreciate the hard work of the Leadership Berkeley Committee, under the
leadership of Rick Manning (United Bank), for their great work in making this a top-notch program.
Tracey Eberling
Special thanks go to our Leadership Berkeley major sponsors – Susquehanna Bank, Essroc, Blue Ridge
Chairman of the Board
Community and Technical College, and Around the Panhandle Magazine (Hornby Publishing). We also
want to thank Michael Bohrer and Detailed Destinations, the official transportation of Leadership Berkeley. Without the
support of these businesses and organizations, this program would not be possible.
One of my favorite events, the Tailgating Under the Stars Auction, is almost here and will be held on Friday, September 21,
2012. We’ve already received some really fabulous auction items – WVU football game tickets, Washington Wizards tickets,
Chick-fil-A for a year, a vacation in the Outer Banks, bicycles, jewelry, just to name a few, but we need more items. Please
consider donating an item for the silent auction. Tickets are now on sale for $50 each or $450 for 10 tickets. A portion of the
proceeds from the Auction goes to the United Way of the Eastern Panhandle. The Tailgating Under the Stars Auction wouldn’t
be possible without the generosity of our sponsors--My Bank! First United Bank & Trust, Bowles Rice McDavid
Graff & Love, Printing Impressions, Bechdel Jewelers, and The Purple Iris. Get your tickets today – this event
sells out!
The Women’s Network program continues to be a success. We thank Mary Hayward for her leadership of the Women’s
Network Committee and look forward to the future as Mary turns over the committee to Pam Neely (State Farm Insurance).
Both of these ladies, along with the other Committee members and staff, have been instrumental in building this great
program sponsored by WVU Hospitals-East, Blue Ridge Community and Technical College, Diehl Law, and Platinum PR.
It’s not too early to start planning for the 86 th Annual Dinner, which will be held on Wednesday, November 7, at the Holiday
Inn. This is our opportunity to celebrate the many successes of the year and to recognize outstanding businesses and
exceptional people in the community. Nominations are currently being accepted for Small and Large Business of the Year
awards. Criteria for nominating a business can be found here. Invitations will be in your mailboxes soon. Mark your
calendars now and reserve your tickets. This event sells out every year.
If you have any questions or need more information, contact the Chamber staff or a board member. Thanks for your support!
The Expo Committee met on August 21 st and after much consideration made a
decision to rename the Expo to “Community Showcase”! The Chamber and the
committee decided to make this change due to various reasons. One objective is to broaden the event so that more businesses
and organizations will participate. Another objective was to reach out to the public that would attend the event and reach a
larger audience. It will be an exciting and fun way to get to learn more about our community. We want to make this a
"hometown" event and invite the community to personally meet business owners and volunteers from our local organizations.
Applications will be available soon so keep a close watch on your inbox so you can take advantage of the early bird pricing!
Thanks again to our committee members: Norm Slemenda, Ruby Avey, Tina Dorsey, Christina Lundberg, Judy Gelestor and
Justin Whitman. There is still time to become a sponsor of this event. To find out the many benefits of being a sponsor, please
contact Tina Combs today at 304-267-4841 or tina@berkeleycounty.org. Click here to download the complete application.
The Potomac Edison Company – Your Provider of Reliable
Electric Service in the Eastern Panhandle
Electricity is the lifeblood of modern day living and
commerce. The Potomac Edison Company takes very
seriously its mission to provide safe, reliable electric
service to our 132,000 customers in West Virginia’s
Eastern Panhandle, including 51,000 customers in
Berkeley County. Whether it is connecting a new resident
or business, upgrading and maintaining the region’s
electrical infrastructure, or restoring power after damaging
storms such as the June 29 Derecho, the men and women
of Potomac Edison stand squarely in your corner. Potomac
Edison employs more than 500 people to serve its West
Virginia and Maryland customers, with about 60
employees based at the Martinsburg Service Center.
Some people may remember us as Allegheny Power. But that name changed after Allegheny Energy merged with
FirstEnergy Corp. of Akron, Ohio in 2011, and FirstEnergy promptly restored the traditional utility name of
Potomac Edison. Our local utility management team is focused on making decisions that benefit our customers and
communities, and we operate by a philosophy that “the greater good is better business.” This testament underlies
our contributions to community organizations and investments in the local economy. Potomac Edison’s
Martinsburg-based employees contributed more than $2,500 and 500 pounds of food to Harvest for Hunger in 2011
and 2012, benefitting the Loaves & Fishes food bank of the Cooperative Community Action Project. Similarly,
employees and the FirstEnergy Foundation donated more than $10,000 to the United Way of the Eastern
Panhandle in 2011.
We take an active role in promoting the communities we serve to new and existing businesses. Businesses seeking
sites can use FirstProspector, a program that finds and analyzes potential sites for new commercial and industrial
construction, including existing available space. Potomac
Edison worked closely with Macy’s and the Berkeley
County Development Authority to extend electric service to
Macy’s new distribution center. We also support regional
efforts to attract data center operators to the Eastern
Panhandle to take advantage of an ample supply of lowcost,
reliable electricity.
NET*WORK: noun [NET-WURK] an association of individuals having a common interest, formed to
provide mutual assistance, helpful information, or the like: The Women’s Network is a great place to
challenge yourself, meet like-minded people, and have fun in the process!
I’m so excited to be the new Women’s Network chairperson and to begin our 3 rd year of being. Under the
leadership of Mary Hayward, we have grown to over 220 members and have offered 8 quarterly workshops, 2 day
-long conferences, and a self-empowerment series with Dr. Michael McCarty. I look forward to carrying on the
mission of the Women’s Network and to offer many more programs that support the women of Berkeley and
Jefferson Counties.
Please forward any workshop or conference ideas you may have to me at Pam@SFinSpringMills.com or call
304.274.5959. ANYTHING is possible – we have tackled ZUMBA, Elder Law, Dress for Success, Conflict
Resolution, Social Networking, and many more subjects… We would need input to continue delivering stellar
programs!
Come join us for the following:
The Use of Tapping to De-Stress, Reduce Anxiety, and Manage Pain
Thursday, September 13 – Women’s Network Self-Empowerment Series - 5-8 pm – Historic McFarland House
Be watching your inbox for more information!
One of my favorite quotes is “YOU’LL NEVER CHANGE WHAT YOU’RE WILLING TO TOLERATE.” What are
you tolerating? Stress, weight issues, pain, being overwhelmed, relationship issues?
During this session you’ll learn how to re-wire your brain to de-stress, reduce anxiety, and manage pain. Many
times we talk about things with friends, a psychologist, or clergy and those conversations may affirm negativity.
Through this session you can learn that when your body is in a flight or fight response you can use tapping to tell
your body that all is ok and heal that flight or fight response.
We’ll learn how to take care of what you believe stresses you – you will also learn how to take care of what comes
up – the issue behind the issue – to fully relieve stress and pain.
This may be a major CHANGE for you – you may feel uncomfortable – you may also get results. So, what are
your waiting for? Sign up today.
The electronic devices we use to manage our lives produce an enormous amount of data. This data comes in
many formats: spreadsheets, emails, voicemails, video and photo files, web pages, blogs and social media,
just to name a few. In the corporate world, data within these formats constitute electronic records which
differ from paper documents and files only in name and type.
Like paper records, businesses have a legal responsibility to manage and protect their electronic records.
Paper documents and files are easy to manage for most organizations. Electronic records, on the other hand
can pose more of a challenge since managing them requires an understanding of ever changing technological
advances and threats. A thorough corporate records management program will account for both paper and
electronic record formats.
Since technology is ever evolving, today’s “latest, greatest” device may be tomorrow’s has been. This makes
the long term preservation of electronic records especially challenging. Much like archival paper records,
some electronic data may need to be kept for several years. If the media you use to store electronic records
is not maintained in the proper environment, electronic data can be severely compromised. Whether your
electronic records are stored on magnetic media tape, hard drives, or optical disc, it’s necessary to have the
right facility and systems to ensure preservation and protection.
You certainly don’t want to put all of your eggs in one basket, so to speak, when archiving electronic records.
Data stored in one place is a risky proposition. For example, the crash of a laptop hard drive can easily result
in the loss of important, corporate electronic records. Therefore, it’s important to implement redundant
data storage and protection plans that cover the course of your electronic records’ retention periods.
As follows, once your electronic records have reached the end of their retention period, it’s crucial to have
destruction policies and procedures in place. The sheer volume of confidential and private information on
one hard drive or backup tape can be extraordinary. If not properly destroyed, this electronic data can easily
be retrieved by the wrong person and prove to be a crippling event for your organization. As a result, any
storage medium housing electronic records should be destroyed by a professional media destruction partner.
As a National Association of Information Destruction (NAID) member, Records Management Solutions
provides secure media destruction services for clients throughout West Virginia, Virginia, Washington DC,
Maryland and Pennsylvania. For more information about how we can help your organization properly
8 Ways to Build Your Baseline Business Reputation
Reputation management is one of today’s hottest small business topics. It’s the process of
monitoring, managing and influencing what’s being said about your business online (especially in
social media) in places like Facebook, Yelp, Twitter and blogs.
But your online reputation is an extension of your reputation in the real world – what I call your
“Baseline Business Reputation” or BBR. It takes place across all touch points you have with
customers and prospects.
For many business owners, reputation has literally meant everything. It’s one area small firms
have always felt they can beat out even the biggest competitors.
But it’s a mistake to believe that social media offers a shortcut to reputation riches. Sure,
reputations can soar – or sink – rapidly online. But for most small and local firms, reputation is
something earned over time.
Key elements of reputation-building that business owners most frequently cite include the human qualities of integrity, honesty, reliability
and exceeding expectations. In addition, building trust and a good reputation requires that the business delivers good quality products and
services, along with good value.
Here are eight ways to build your baseline business reputation:
Business Matters
Build bottom-up credibility. Start by delivering what you promise. And the best way to do that is to first under-promise, and then overdeliver.
A sure-fire reputation buster is to make claims or promises that aren’t met – in your advertising, in person, by your employees or in
the hours you post but don’t keep. This means vastly more than posting a plaque on your window, wall or website touting membership in
the local chamber of commerce, Better Business Bureau or your professional association.
Deliver some R&R – as in Responsiveness and Reliability. To develop a good reputation for responsiveness, be a stickler for
communication and resolve complaints quickly. If there’s a mistake or delay, own up to it and make extra effort to fix the problem quickly.
An apology helps too. A complaining customer can become your biggest supporter if the complaint is resolved quickly and effectively. At
the same time your baseline reputation benefits.
Offer exceptional value. Customers and clients define value differently, so this can involve many different things. You might, for
example, offer free service or product support for a period of time, or offer discounts and special perks to loyal customers. Providing
something unexpected, such as a giveaway or free sample, is a good value- and reputation-building tactic. And paying attention to details –
making sure a product is spotless on delivery, for example – scores big value and reputation points.
Be privacy sensitive. In addition to guarding sensitive information (credit card slips, for example) and honoring permission-based
mailing and email lists, this also means providing a discrete area to discuss financial or other sensitive matters, such as medical issues at a
drug store.
Demonstrate tech proficiency. A business that uses antiquated technology will have a reputation as being, well, antiquated. These
days, being tech and internet savvy is critical to being perceived as competent and capable as a business. Keep your computers, mobile
devices, printers, email and voicemail systems, software, websites and social media pages up to date.
Communicate selectively and effectively. Keep letters, emails and voicemails short, to the point, professional and productive. Use
correct spelling and always leave contact information, even if you think the recipient has it. Make sure your company information – full
name, address, phone, fax, website URL, toll free number, hours and other vital information – is displayed in prominent locations.
Make your website polished and professional. A clean, up-to-date, professional looking website is absolutely vital today, regardless
of the type or size business you have. It doesn’t need to be big or fancy, but it does need to be accurate and up to date.
Do community service. A little selfless generosity toward local organizations or your community goes a long way toward helping
building trust and a positive reputation.
