Hook received a thank you note from Ahead with Horses for our $600

donation .Tom Petersmeyer and Joan Williams won the prizes (but
they both weren’t here today) for finding the Chamber’s banner with our
club name on it. It was at Verdugo and the big oak tree. (Evidently the
oak tree needs trimming) But really on Verdugo on the north at Union
Street just east of Descanso Drive. Great News! Ralphs West is donating
the bread and $200 for the Community Breakfast. Ralphs East is
donating orange juice. Trader Joes is donating milk and eggs and
McDonalds is donating syrup. We are going to ask Bob Cable to drive
his truck for the parade. Past Presidents who want to ride please advise
Pres. Rosemary and practice your wave before the parade. A note from
The Cal-Nev-Ha District, Treasurer Al Sieczkowlki passed away. Claire
with a notation for the Herrman-Franklin Key Club Scholarship Fund. All donations from AM
Kiwanians will go through your Foundation A/R.
H.A.M.S.: Barbie Eland played Chris Ecker today and passed the “Bucket”. Joe Thompson has been
asked to say a few words at Bill Barber’s memorial service May 19. If any of us have some good
Kiwanis stories about Bill, please let him know. Shirley and Don Hingst gave a happy $20 for Margot
Seiss and Donn Sarbaum who did their bread runs while they were in France learning how to drink the
wine. They sure thought the Eiffel Tower was BIG. Dave Moffett’s grandson was on the winning
baseball team but got beaned during the game as pitcher, so he had to sit out the rest of the game. He is

ok, just disappointed he didn’t get to finish the game. John Ray from La Crescenta/Montrose gave a buck
for his daughter who is in Romania today with the State Dept. and will travel 29 hours by plane to attend
a Bachelorette party in Palm Springs. He says good thing she is young. Joyce Ruygrok says her grandson
tried to qualify for the U. S. Open at Oakmont but his new swing just didn’t work out for him. Tim
Scheck says he will be driving to Seattle to enter a clinical trial. He will be gone a couple of months and
we wish him well. Jack LaBrie had a great trip to Montana at a little cabin that belonged to his in-laws;
he says the mountains had snow on the tops and green down below. Beautiful Big Sky Country. Olof
Liden says he has found a great handyman who was hired to fix one thing and fixed about 5, but billed
for one. Anyone needing his name and number call Olof. Joan and Chuck McGee said they had a great
time with the Hylands and the Johnsons on their cruise to Alaska. It was Bill Hyland’s first cruise and
it was fun to watch his face. Marie Hyland says the shuttle they took from the airport to home blew a
sparkplug out of the engine with a loud “bang”. They had to wait for a rescue van to take them home but
she met the nicest people while they waited for the van!
Program/Speaker Today: Brian Hummel, Staff Council The scheduled speaker today didn’t show so
Brian was called on to give a craft talk since it was about 20 years ago that he joined Kiwanis. Brian
talked about all the places he went to school and lived growing up and how he met his wife Moira-at law
school. They have 3 children, the oldest of which is going to be married in June. (I can remember when
he brought them to Kiwanis meetings.) Son Joe is working for a high tech laser company based in San
Diego traveling anywhere they need him, Taiwan, Korea, Japan etc. Brian has sung since he was 5. He
sang his school alma mater song and one other that has stuck in his mind. Great talk Brian, glad you are
one of us!
