Abstract<br />

ii<br />

The <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>of</strong> <strong>anthropomorphism</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>wildlife</strong> <strong>film</strong> <strong>and</strong> documentary is <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

misconstrued <strong>and</strong> underestimated. Critics <strong>of</strong> anthropomorphic techniques simplify them<br />

as p<strong>and</strong>er<strong>in</strong>g to an audience‟s cultural ideologies <strong>and</strong> expectations. Anthropomorphism,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g personification, characterisation <strong>and</strong> narrative structure, are nevertheless<br />

<strong>in</strong>separable from the <strong>wildlife</strong> <strong>film</strong>mak<strong>in</strong>g process. Inherently subjective, nature on screen<br />

is depicted as per the production <strong>and</strong> post-production choices <strong>of</strong> the <strong>wildlife</strong> <strong>film</strong>maker.<br />

Furthermore, <strong>film</strong>, as a medium for enterta<strong>in</strong>ment, has ensured that representations <strong>of</strong><br />

animals reflect those that are popular <strong>and</strong> will provide enterta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g view<strong>in</strong>g for a<br />

particular audience. This <strong>anthropomorphism</strong> has great importance <strong>and</strong> potential<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g audience numbers <strong>and</strong> has the potential to <strong>in</strong>spire conservation<br />

action through greater awareness <strong>and</strong> science communication. Underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>anthropomorphism</strong> need to move away from criticism <strong>of</strong> its validity as a <strong>film</strong>mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

technique <strong>and</strong> be reframed towards its potential to <strong>in</strong>spire audiences.
