Change <strong>in</strong> ownership <strong>of</strong> courses – GRADUATE – MAJOR COURSE CHANGE<br />

On February 22, 2011, the Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees approved the formation <strong>of</strong> the Science, Technology,<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, and Mathematics (STEM) Education Department. The STEM Education Department will be<br />

fiscally implemented on July 1, 2011.<br />

We are request<strong>in</strong>g a <strong>change</strong> <strong>in</strong> ownership for the mathematics and science education courses taught by<br />

STEM Education faculty be moved <strong>to</strong> the STEM Education Department as written <strong>in</strong> Appendix A<br />

(Attached) <strong>of</strong> the STEM Education Department Proposal. All <strong>of</strong> these courses currently reside <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Curriculum & Instruction (<strong>EDC</strong>).<br />

Current Courses Taught by STEM Education Faculty <strong>in</strong> Curriculum and Instruction and Future Courses<br />

Taught <strong>in</strong> STEM Education<br />

There are currently 96 courses on record with<strong>in</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Curriculum and Instruction. Twenty<br />

(21%) <strong>of</strong> these courses are taught by STEM Education Faculty Members. The follow<strong>in</strong>g courses would be<br />

transferred <strong>to</strong> the STEM Education Department under “<strong>SEM</strong>” (as approved by registrar’s <strong>of</strong>fice) and<br />

rema<strong>in</strong> the responsibility <strong>of</strong> the STEM Education Faculty Members. Courses taught with<strong>in</strong> set programs<br />

such as the MIC, Elementary, and Middle School Programs will cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>to</strong> be coord<strong>in</strong>ated with the<br />

Residency Requirement<br />

<strong>SEM</strong> 781: Independent<br />

Study <strong>in</strong> STEM Education<br />

DGS/Advisor Residency credit <strong>of</strong><br />

dissertation research after the<br />

qualify<strong>in</strong>g exam. Students<br />

may register for this course <strong>in</strong><br />

the semester <strong>of</strong> the qualify<strong>in</strong>g<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ation. A m<strong>in</strong>imum <strong>of</strong><br />

two semesters are required as<br />

well as cont<strong>in</strong>uous enrollment<br />

(Fall and Spr<strong>in</strong>g) until the<br />

dissertation is completed and<br />

defended.<br />
