READy FOR TAKE-OFF? – AIR FREIGHT SyMpOSIUM IN SOEST

March 14th and 15th 2012, a symposium
on “safety in air freight” took place
in Soest. Why safety in the supply chain
in general? Who is the known consignor?
How is air freight packed securely? What
can be x-rayed? Who is to be educated?
What can a company do in order to simplify
the certification process? The roughly
350 attendees of the air freight symposium
with the slogan “Ready for Take-Off”
have been asked these and many more
questions in the civic center in Soest. In
addition, it became clear that air freight
security remains a breaking topic.
Our company was represented in Soest as well.
The team around Benno Nelles, Global Product
Manager Airfreight, took the opportunity to
inform existing and potential customers about
the Hellmann air freight services. This attracted
a lot of attention. Benno Nelles said: “The recent
challenges regarding a secure air freight
transport chain, allow us to start a dialogue
with every air freight consignor”.
Our colleague from Hamburg, the Global Account
Manager Christof Kroczek, was also at
the Hellmann exhibition booth. Together with
Benno Nelles, he used the air freight symposium
as a relevant platform to introduce to the
customers a new packaging solution which
combines volume optimization, cost reduction,
safety and green logistics. The unit in question
is the air freight box including a pallet, entirely
made out of corrugated paper. Although the
box is still in the testing and coordination phase
within our company, it was a real sensation
in Soest. “The topics `Green` and `Packaging`
complement each other outstandingly. “The
box allows us to demonstrate to the customers,
in a concrete and comprehensive way,
how logistics and sustainability can go hand in
hand”, explains Christof Kroczek. That sounds
interesting and promising.
MD-11 FUll CHARTER IN lEJ

Due to the excellent cooperation during
an ex factory assignment in the second
last year, and the recommendation by
the factory in Adorf, the branch in Leipzig
was contacted by NAUE GmbH & Co.
KG for an air freight transport to Canada,
starting February this year. 400 rolls
of geosynthetic grids, each with a length
of 4.75 meters, a 40 cm diameter and
weighing 95 kilo, were to be transported
from the factory in Adorf to the Calgary
Airport.
In cooperation with the Airfreight Pricing
Team Düsseldorf, we offered a conventional
air freight solution which involved several
flights to Canada. This however, did not meet
the urgency requirements.
Roland Wiesenberger from Hellmann Munich
provided the branch in Leipzig with a full charter
price (FedEx MD-11) and mediated successfully
between Chapman Freeborn Airmarketing
GmbH and the colleagues in Leipzig. After the
offer has been sent out, it took only a weekend
for the customer to decide in favor of the
charter solution from Leipzig to Calgary. The
pre-carriage by truck, from Adorf to the airport
in Leipzig/Halle, was carried out without
complications. According with the airline’s instructions,
the pallets were constructed quickly
and without any time pressure by Portground
GmbH from Leipzig. Due to the exceptionality
of the goods and some minor difficulties
with the pallet construction, the tension for
all those involved was very high on the day
of shipment. Andreas Krause and Alexander
Wünsch accompanied the goods on the way
from the warehouse to the airline and watched
the whole loading process. The experience of
the loadmasters and the strength and power
of the loading staff was needed here. All were
relieved after the loading was finished in the
late afternoon and the cargo hatch of the MD-
11 was closed. With minor delay, the airplane
could finally take off for Calgary at 16:58
o’clock local time.
