FEDERAl MOGUl DURBAN – GETTING TO GRIpS WITH CHANGES
IN THE pORT OF DURBAN – SOUTH AFRICA
Debbie Nortje, Hellmann Durban
During the past couple of months the
Port of Durban has been privy to many
changes. The major upgrade to Durban
Port was completed in May 2010.
The depth of the harbour was deepened and
the mouth to the port was widened so as to be
in a position to accommodate the larger container
vessels which are now serving the route.
Much has changed in terms of new equipment
being installed and new systems are being
implemented in order to enhance productivity
and the smoother flow of documents.
During the port upgrade, 10 million cubic
metres of material were dredged from the sea
to widen and deepen the entrance channel
to the harbour, a project which lasted for 147
weeks. Four million man hours were worked
without any fatalities and more than 2,000
job opportunities were created. As a regular
customer of the port and an integral supplier
to the Automotive Industry, we felt that a harbour
tour for the Federal Mogul team was well
overdue and served as a vital tool for them to
understand the workings within the harbour
and how the new equipment and new berthing
plans affect the logistics of their industry. Of
course as is the case with most automotive
suppliers, it was always a case of "we're too
busy". Needless to say persistency paid off
v. l.: Maurice Gerrits, Vicky Rajkumar, Mervin Dass, Steve Leahy, Alan Blades
and we finally managed to convince Federal
Mogul's management team that the exercise
was important to them, rather than a nice to
have and we set a date for the harbour tour.
Hellmann hired the "Spirit of Elan" for the
occasion and invited the various management
and staff from both companies that deal with
each other on a regular basis, to do a one hour
harbour tour of Durban harbour. Unfortunately,
due to the new ISPS regulations, the Port
Authorities no longer encourage visitors inside
the container terminals, so the only alternative
was to do it via the harbour which is far more
user friendly and effective and enabled us to
get right up close to the action.
The day was beautiful and sunny, we could
not have asked for better weather. We boarded
Back Row: Marc Harris, Alan Blades (Federal Mogul Prospecton), Nerissa Hurka, Cherise
Brown, Debbie Nortje, Marvin Dass (Federal Mogul Pinetown), Ncumisa Mfenqa (Federal Mogul
Pinetown), Steve Leahy (Federal Mogul Pinetown) – Front Row: Vicky Rajkumar (Federal
Mogul Prospecton), Rahim Shaik Hoosen, Chad Message, Maurice Gerrits
the vessel at Wilson's Wharf, the Small Craft
Harbour, and skipper Greg took us around the
entire circumference of Durban harbour. We
were all able to sit out on deck and enjoy a
view of the vessels discharging, the straddle
carriers going about their duties and the gantry
cranes in operation. Chad Message, our
National Seafreight Product Manager, who
before joining Hellmann, spent many years
with Safmarine, was able to give the Federal
Mogul team some first hand information from
a vessel agent's point of view and he explained
the various berths and the difference between
"rubber tyred gantries" vs the older type gantries
and how it affects the port operation. We
were able to see some of the latest equipment
being used in the port and how the various
vessels on the different routes differed from
each other. Chad explained the concept of the
vessel's load plan and the importance of the
correct container weights being declared on
documents at the time of export. We were even
able to identify some of the vessels that had
Federal Mogul cargo on board!
Following the tour of the harbour, the Federal
Mogul team accomponied us to visit our new
Hellmann premises and warehouse and to
meet the various Hellmann people whom they
deal with daily in the various departments.
This was also a great opportunity for Ncumisa
Mfenqa, Federal Mogul's new Logistics Controller
to familiarise herself with the Hellmann
operations. All in all, I believe it was a good
exercise for all and well worth the time spent.
