16 <strong>Art</strong> activity in the Sidney Myer Education Centre<br />

4.3 Education<br />

Programming for teacher pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

development continued, with 8 events<br />

attended by 74 teachers. Programs included<br />

Pan in Armour, The Thinking Curriculum,<br />

Photography, <strong>Heide</strong> Heydays and Drawing.<br />

“Your Cubism and Australian <strong>Art</strong> Educators’<br />

Forum was a wonderful way to spend a day,<br />

not only networking with other teachers but<br />

to really get an appreciation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Heide</strong> and<br />

the set-up <strong>of</strong> exhibitions … It was exciting<br />

to hear the young artists talk about their art<br />

and art making process. The painting activity<br />

was a fun way to end the day and rounded<br />

<strong>of</strong>f what we would conclude overall as a<br />

perfect day out!”<br />

School holiday activities provided 455<br />

young people with 24 programs throughout<br />

the year. Most programs ran at full capacity,<br />

with I Wander with Charlie S<strong>of</strong>o being<br />

repeated due to popular demand. Early<br />

Photo Processes and Upcycle Ur Wardrobe<br />

were <strong>of</strong>fered to broaden audiences to<br />

include teens. Mark Briggs from Cafe Vue<br />

showed eager children how to make the<br />

perfect cupcake and Scared-out-<strong>of</strong>-your-life<br />

drawing had SMEC full <strong>of</strong> snakes, crocodiles,<br />

lizards, turtles, frogs and children. Children<br />

milked a cow and made butter in Milky-<br />

Moos and a popular new program, Free<br />

Range <strong>Art</strong>, was devised for children aged<br />

3 to 5 accompanied by a significant adult.<br />

The Hatters Mad Tea Party, Frankencritters,<br />

Quirky Mirka Masks, and Mythmakers, where<br />

children to made art with the assistance<br />

<strong>of</strong> dramaturges and puppeteers, were also<br />

very popular.<br />

Thirteen Education resources were made<br />

available to teachers online, including<br />

education kits for Cubism & Australian <strong>Art</strong>,<br />

Up Close and Albert Tucker and information<br />

for a self-guided tour <strong>of</strong> <strong>Heide</strong>: Sustainability<br />

at the <strong>Museum</strong> Trails.<br />

<strong>Heide</strong> Education was greatly supported<br />

by a team <strong>of</strong> twelve specialist Education<br />

Volunteers, who contributed 723 hours<br />

<strong>of</strong> assistance. Two internships were<br />

completed by Masters students in<br />

Business (<strong>Art</strong>s and Cultural Management,<br />

University <strong>of</strong> South Australia) and<br />

<strong>Museum</strong>s and Collections (Australian<br />

National University). Interns assisted with<br />

the delivery <strong>of</strong> programs and produced<br />

education resources. <strong>Heide</strong> Education<br />

values and appreciates the Education<br />

Volunteers’ pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism, commitment<br />

and dedication to the <strong>Museum</strong>.<br />
