Masters of Ceremonies Carl Grapentine Bands of America National Concert Band Festival Carl Grapentine is the host of the Morning Program on WFMT/ 98.7 FM, Chicago’s Classical radio station. Carl first joined WFMT in 1986 after thirteen years as the morning host of the classical music station in Detroit. Carl hosted the first five National Concert Band Festivals in Chicago and Music for All was thrilled to welcome him back as Master of Ceremonies beginning with the 1999 festival in Indianapolis. Carl presents pre-concert lectures for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Music of the Baroque, and many other groups. He also performs as narrator with the Chicago Pro Musica and hosts concerts for numerous community orchestras and bands. An alumnus of the University of Michigan School of Music, Carl has been the “stadium voice” of the University of Michael F. Hunt is recognized as a highly original international composer, producer of recordings, artistic collaborator, lecturer, and arts consultant. He served as Composer for the State of Missouri’s Artist-In-Education Program, and was chosen as the Composer of the Year for 1990 by the Missouri Music Teachers’ Association. His music is presented on the WNYC radio program “Music of Our Time” hosted by John Schaefer, and has also been featured on the syndicated radio program “Echoes.” As artistic collaborator, Hunt has created music for a number of leading artists and cultural institutions, including the State Ballet of Missouri, the Mid America Dance Company, and the Loretto-Hilton Repertory Theatre. His innovative scores for dance, concert, choral, and theatre performance have received unreserved critical praise. The Saeko Ichinohe Dance Company, a modern Japanese- American dance company in New York City, commissioned him to write a full-length work for dance based on the 11th century Japanese novel The Tale of Genji. Akins Orchestra America National Festival In a 40-year career with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Thomas N. Akins served as principal timpanist (1965-91), Director of Public Relations (1991-2002) and Director of Archives (2002-2005). He gave the world premiere performance of William Kraft’s “Concerto for Timpani and Orchestra” in 1984. The ISO’s Principal Timpani Chair Michigan Marching Band for thirty-eight seasons - his voice being heard on national telecasts of sixteen Rose Bowl games and numerous other bowl games. In 2006 he also added the duties of game public address announcer at Michigan Stadium. An accomplished conductor and singer, Carl has twenty years of experience as a church music director. Currently, he is serving as interim choir director of Grace Lutheran Church in River Forest. He has also sung the national anthem for professional and collegiate sporting events at Wrigley Field, Comiskey Park, Tiger Stadium, the Pontiac Silverdome, and the University of Michigan’s Crisler Arena. Carl lives in Oak Park, Illinois with his wife, Elizabeth, and their two children, Jonathan and Annie. was premiered at the Asia Society in New York. His music is included in the 25th Anniversary album Reflections of the New Music Circle of Saint Louis, the Primitive Earth and Pandora’s Garage compact discs with Carl Weingarten, and an album of music composed for the Saint Louis Ki-Aikido Society. Hunt’s expertise as a lecturer and arts consultant has attracted cultural, professional and educational audiences of all ages in the United States and abroad. He holds a Ph.D. in music composition from Washington University, was Composer in Residence at Fontbonne University for nine years and served as the Senior Visiting Fulbright Scholar at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. Dr. Hunt worked for the Missouri Arts Council for nine years and was Director of national Programs for the Oasis Institute. Currently, Dr. Hunt is the Executive Director of the Fine Arts Society of Indianapolis, which supplies classical music radio programming for WICR 88.7 FM in Indianapolis.. is endowed and titled in Akins’ honor. He is conductor of Chamber Brass Choir and the Indy Pops Orchestra and serves on several local boards. Akins is regularly heard on major sports radio networks, reporting on games and activities in the central Indiana area, including those of the Pacers, Colts, Big Ten and NCAA.
