MUMMA WINS
(Continued from 1'age .)
from tho outer mnrk to the finish was
Zh. Cm. Am.', Snamrock Sli. Tm. Sr.,
hewing that In the fifteen miles before
the wind the Columbia hndKAlned
twenty-tw- o veconds.
After the rare, while the yachts were
being towed hack to their moorings,
Mr Thomas Upton's steam yacht Krln
ranged up alongside the Columbia. The
rln's officers ana men, led by Sir
Thomas, gave three hearty cheers.
They were quickly responded to with
cheers from the Columbia's men, led
by C. Oliver Iselln.
A number of yachts fired guns as salutes
to both yachts at the finish. The
flagship Corsair was among them, and
as soon as the American nclit had
crossed the line Commodore J. Plerpont
Morgan ordered the American ciuigns
to be hoisted nt each mnithcad. Every
steamer saluted with her whistle, nnd
the Shamrock's welcome was quite as
noisy ns the Columbia's. The yachts
and the excursion fleet soon vanished
in the mist, homeward bound.
SKCONI) RACE.
NEW YORK, Oct. 17. Tho topmast
of the cup challenger Shamrock car-rie- d
away twenty-fiv- e minutes after tho
big single-stick- er had crossed the starting
line today and her enormous club
topsail, with Its 3,000 feet of canvas,
came rattling down on the deck, leaving
her a hopeless cripple. No nmount
of pluck or courage could face such a
catastrophe and Captain Hogarth Im
mediately abandoned the race, towing
back to the nnchorage ns he had
cleared away tho wreckage. Tho Co
lumbia continued over tho course
alone, placing to her credit tho second
of the rnces for tho America s cup,
Tho accident to tho Shamrock
mined the race nnd caused the keenest
regret among tho yachtsmen and the
thousands of sightseers who wcro on
band to witness what had promised to
be a glorious duel. It Is unfortunate
that the defender should have been
the beneficiary of an accident, as thero
Is little glory in beating n cripple, but
the rule Is Ironclad. If crippled bcfoic
the start time for repairs Is allowed,
nut once over tho line. If anythlnu car
rles away, the sufferer must make such
repairs ns lie can, or. If rendered bors
lit combat, ns tho Shamrock war to
day, bo must tako the consequences.
There Is good sense and logic behind
tho rule. The rnces are n test of construction
ns well ns of design nnd seamanship.
Doubtless If Mr. Iselln could
hao had bis choice In the matter he
generously woild have declined to
continue In view of tho crinnlcd condl
tion of his rival, but tho rules gnvc
Iilnj no nltcrnnmc. Ho was In duty
bound to go on, nnd ns ho finished well
Had tho accident not occurred however,
It Is believed tho Ynnkco boat
would have, repeated the beating sho
gave the challenger yesterday. During
the twenty-fiv- e minutes tho .ichts
SUGAR TRADE IN I'HILAliEM'HIA.
PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 2J. In the
history of tho sugar trade tho wholesale
badly as It is at present, nnd notwithstanding
nil the power and adroitness
o' the Sugar Trust, it is believed firmly
by the knowing ones on 'Change
that If the present conditions continue
much longer, refined sugar will bo n
four i cuts a pound, or even less, and
that the lowest net price of :i a-- 1 icnts,
Wheh the American Sugar Refining
Something new Is an experiment.
Must be proven to be as represented.
Ho successful at homo or you doubt
Tho manufacturer's statement Is not
convincing proof of merit,
Hut the endorsement ot friends Is.
Now, supposing you had a weak
Would you experiment on It ?
You will read of many
But they come from far-aw- places.
It's different when the endorsement
comes from home.
Always remember,
Home endorsement is the proof that
backs every box of Coan's Backache
Kidney Pills.
Mr. H. S. Swlnton, of this city, says:
"I was a long sufferer from backache,
having been afflicted with it for twelve
years. Taking this as a symptom of
kidney trouble, nnd seeing Doan's
Backache Kidney Pills advertised as
being good for complaints such as
mine, I procured some of them at the
Hollister Drug Co.'s store. I found upon
taking them that they were doing
me good, and was thereby encouraged
to keep on until now I am cured of the
backache. The merits of Doan a Back-ach-
Kidney Pills have been striking'
ly shown in my case, and I recommend
them to other sufferers."
Doati's Backache Kidney Pills al
ways have the picture of a leaf on the
wrapper. In asking for Doan's Back'
ache Kidney Pills ask for the kind
which cured Mr. Swlnton, and see that
the leaf Is on the wrapper.
Doan's, Backache Kidney Pills are
sold by all chemists and storekeepers
at 50 cents per box, six boxes $2.50, or
will be mailed on receipt of price by
