THE BAHK WILNA
On Fire While Docked at
Tacoma.
Tk Vmtl sea Tkm Hasina TkoMeaa
Ftct of Luattr a Total
Lms.
TACOMA, Wash., Oct. 17. In some
mysterious manner the baric Wllna,
Captain Slater, caught Arc, tonight
about 8 o'clock while lying at tho long
dock of tho St. Paul ft Tacoma Lumber
Company. All efforts to put out tho
fire proved unavailing and at midnight
the Wllna Ilea In midstream a mass of
flames. Sho will be a total loss. Her
value Is estimated ai $35,000.
It 1b supposed tho lira originated in
tho galley. Before 9 o'clock the flames
burst out above dec!: and the city was
aroused by the repeated whistlings of
the tugs Fairfield nnd Favorite, which
hastened to the burning vessel's assist-
ance. The Wllna had been fastened to
the mill wharf bow foremost, with an
anchor out over her stern. The tugs at
first alternated to nut out tho flro with
small streams of wator from their
imnins. This Droved futllo despite the
assistance of the crows of two lumber
schoonera lying near.
About 9:30 tho flames had gained
such headway that tho Wllna was cut
loose from tho wharf and hauled out
Into the stream, where sho lay at an'
chor. The dock where sho was loading
Is a mlla from tho sawmill and is
reached by a narrow wharf over which
It was Impossible to haul a flro engine.
It being at extremo low two it was aiso
Impracticable to load flro engines upon
scows. An enort wai mauo in mis ui--
rectlon, but It was found that tho only
available scow was fast on the tide
flats and could not ho moved until the
tide came In.
Fire Department officials speedily
sent word to Captain Slater and tuga
that tho Fire Department would ue
able to extinguish tho flro If tho Wllna
was hauled to the Ocean dock, where
half a dozen flro cnglucj could throw
streams Into her from shore. This
movo was not attempted, apparently
because It was feared tho burning ship
would set tho warehouses on flro If
towed In shore. She wan accordingly
left to burn.
The Wllna Is owned lu San Francis
OHEUA hi ISE.
At the Opera Houso last night there
was a vory largo atidlenco to witness
the production by the Clay Clement
Company of "Tho Now Dominion." The
play throughout went smoothly nnd
without any of tho tedious waita be-
tween acts which so characterized the
first night's production. In his delinea
tion of the character of tho Baron, Mr.
Clement fairly excelled himself, and
his every appearance on tho stage, was
a signal for loud npplauso while cur
tain calls wero responded to at the
close of each 'net. Miss Foltz and Mrs.
Clement acquitted themselves excel
lently nnd the entire company fulfilled
all expectations.
On Saturday evening tho Clay Cle
ment Company will conclude their sea
son with tho production of "Hamlet,
with Mr. Clement as "the melancholy
Dane," supported by tho full strength
of tho company. In speaking of Mr.
Clement's interpretation of "Hamlet,"
the Detroit Frco Press says:
"Mr. Clement's readings indicate 'In-
tellectual penetration and grasp. He
copies nobody's mannerisms and ho
borrows nobody's Ideas, but his Ham-
let more resembles Fechter's than that
of uny other player in mind, In- - the
sense that It Is, In most of Its aspects,
natural and human, with very Uttlo In
It that Is merely theatric. His deliv-
ery of tho soliloquies Is characterized
by that kind of perfection which has
been described as "thinking aloud."
Ono of the great charms of his elocu-
tion la variety, while superior com-
mand of himself Is habitually shown
In the gradations by which he ap-
proaches a climax. In this rcapeot ho
is like the tar-seei- architect who
lays a solid foundation for an Imposing
superstructure, - and It Ib thus that he
impresses upon the spectator a sense of
tho enduring and massive character of
his work. This means especially that
lie Is provided with that Indispensable
part of n great actors equipment re- -
servo force."
