Rewe in Changing Times. 1927 Rewe-Zentrale begins its operations in Cologne and is entered into the cooperative registry. Seventeen purchasing cooperatives had joined forces by the end of 1926 and agreed to found the organisation. The name Rewe is derived from the German abbreviation of Revisionsverband der Westkauf-Genossenschaften ("auditing association of western purchasing cooperatives"). 1932 To demonstrate the uniformity of the Rewe organisation, new guidelines are issued on the use and design of the "Rewe" logo. 1945 In April, activities at Rewe Head Office finally collapse because of the war. A branch office in Cologne starts up Head Office businesses again as early as August. 1947 "Rewe-Zentralimport e.G.m.b.H." is founded. 1959 Business is expanded to include exporting and wholesaling. 1972 In the framework of Rewe Group reforms, "Rewe-Zentralimport e.G.m.b.H." becomes today's Rewe- Zentral AG. The Rewe wholesalers are the registered shareholders. Rewe-Zentral AG operates the goods trade. Rewe-Zentralfinanz eG takes over the duties of a credit cooperative. The Rewe partnership model promotes independent retailers at improved business terms. The increasing capital needs of the stores leads to the model of the Rewe Trading Companies, in which Rewe's Head Office may own by up to 50 per cent. 43 REWE MILESTONES 1973 The trading cooperative "Für Sie- Discount eG." in Cologne becomes a member of Rewe-Zentralfinanz eG. 1974 Rewe-Zentrale takes a 50 per cent stake in the Leibbrand Group. The expansion of the Company, founded in 1961, continues as Rewe-Handelsgesellschaft Leibbrand oHG in Bad Homburg with the HL and miniMAL supermarket chains, Penny discount stores, toom hypermarkets, and idea drugstores. Rewe takes over Leibbrand ownership in 1989. 1979 Rewe wins the "Cassis du Dijon" ruling at the European Court of Justice. The judgment marks a milestone for free trade within the EU. The judgment states that any product that can be traded in an EU member country may also be offered for sale in every other EU country.
