A year to celebrate
Bishop James J. Hartley created a profound and lasting legacy 84 years ago when
he established St. Charles Preparatory School upon two basic tenets. He wanted the
new school to provide students “a complete, thorough, and sound classical training”
that would enable them to take up the specialties and profession of their choice; and
he pledged that no qualified young man would be turned away from receiving a St.
Charles education because of his inability to meet tuition.
And since the school’s inception, we have used the inspiring legacy of our patron
saint, Charles Borromeo, to impress upon every student that we all are “our brother’s
keeper,” and are expected to serve others, one another, and the community at
large.
With these concepts as our school’s foundation, the St. Charles faculty and staff
have nurtured the minds and hearts of its students for more than eight decades.
Many alumni, in pursuit of these concepts, have distinguished themselves in many
ways, pursuing careers as priests, entrepreneurs, business leaders, artists, scientists,
doctors, lawyers, teachers, and judges to name a few endeavors, and as community
leaders.
In this edition of the Cardinal magazine, you can read stories about alumni whose
lives and careers have made an impact locally, nationally, and globally -- in essence,
creating and handing legacies of their own to children, friends, and institutions, all
for the greater good.
One such example is Walt Plank, a 1941 St. Charles alumnus who died in 1993
but whose legacy of service to his fellow man and devotion to alma mater lives on.

while Walt held

steam table behind
the bar. There, in
the middle of the
action, he loved
to engage all who
came to socialize
and share in spirited
conversation.
His beloved Buckeyes
were always a
favorite topic.
Walt was proud
to tell the story of his attending St. Charles with the help of a
benefactor he never met. The kindness of that person made a
lasting impression on Walt and instilled in him a desire to give
back to St. Charles youngsters from the south end who would
need financial assistance to attend SC. His dream of helping
boys of the south end was boosted when the Kelley and Plank
Families raised a significant memorial endowment for tuition
that will live on for generations to come.
With that short background on Walt, it’s with pride and satisfaction
that I can announce the new athletic field at St. Charles
is named Walt Plank Field. (see related story, page 37). Walt’s
love for St. Charles was displayed in his joyful participation
as a basketball and baseball player for the Cadinals. With his
Café as a landmark, Walt sponsored all types of athletic teams
– especially baseball and softball – so his love of St. Charles and
athletics of all kinds makes this a fitting honor.
I commend the remarkable job by our Turf Field Committee of
fund raisers, led by Annual Fund chairman Tom O’Leary ’64 and
our six parent couples, who worked tirelessly to secure funding
for the field. Our construction plan and site preparation was
once again led by our longtime friend Hank Sherowski, whose
son Steve graduated in 1991. Brothers Steve and Marty Savko,
partners in Nick Savko & Sons Inc., expertly did all of the field
preparation work. Marty’s son, Marty Savko Jr., graduated in
the Class of 2007 and answered a thousand questions from students
during the field preparation. In addition to our very generous
parent donors, I thank St. Charles stalwart Don Kelley ’47,
who conceived of the special naming of our new field and helped
lead us in a successful funding effort.
The St. Charles senior class was granted a place of honor on the stage during
this years’ all-school Academic Awards Assembly held May 17. The annual event
recognizes individuals and groups for various outstanding academic and athletic
achievements earned over the course of the year.

’82 and daughter,
Mary Plank Underwood, who carry on fine traditions established
by their father. The restaurant on Parsons Avenue serves as a
hub for Catholic school reunions, a family gathering place after
special events – both happy and sad – and a place where St.
Charles alumni celebrate after games. When you go, you’re apt
to run into several Carolians who are loyal regulars.
This month we celebrate the one-year anniversary of the opening
of the Robert C. Walter Student Commons. In these pages
we review the many student benefits of this beautiful facility
and how it has brought our community more closely together.
With its beauty and impressive dimensions, the structure is a
great success and makes a lasting impression on our students,
teachers, and alumni. Several Central Ohio organizations also
have benefited from this impressive building, and its popularity
is growing with brides as a reception site.
Our community owes a great debt of gratitude to Bob ’63 and
Peggy Walter for leading the way for St. Charles to build this
structure, which honors the memory of Bob’s father. This newest
campus addition, made possible largely by their major contribution,
plus their previous generosity to the school’s scholarship
endowments play a key role in helping the school meet its promise
to help qualified young men who need financial assistance to
earn a St. Charles diploma.
Earlier in this school year, St. Charles freshman Chase
Meacham became a role model for every member of the St.
Charles family when he was diagnosed with cancer in his leg
and underwent treatment. I am pleased to report Chase has
made his way through his freshman year while undergoing
treatments. What an inspiration he was these past months with
his persistent great attitude and commitment to his school work.
I’m thrilled to report he has been given a “clean” bill of health!
(see related story on page 11). Earlier this spring, Chase gave
testimony in Washington to support a pediatric cancer research
funding bill sponsored by U.S. Rep. Deborah Price. Chase, the
St. Charles family salutes you for your courage and fortitude
and we are extremely proud of you as a loyal Carolian.
The legacy of our school’s challenging curriculum prepares
young men for success at the next level and helps mold them
into leaders in their professional and parish lives. Evidence of
those success stories can be found on our Student News (pages
10-15) and Alumni Notes section (pages 37-43).
As another school year comes to a close, I thank all members
of our community who have helped the Class of 2007 reach a
goal that sets them apart from their peers: a St. Charles diploma.
Your remarkable generosity to help those less fortunate and
your support of our recent campus improvements is a constant
inspiration to me and my colleagues.
May God continue to bless you all.

Bishop blesses new school facilities
at Feast Day Mass; 3 alumni honored
St. Charles’ annual Feast Day Mass was held for the first time in the new Robert C.
Walter Student Commons.
T
he Robert C. Walter Student Commons offered a fitting
backdrop last November for the annual Feast Day
celebration in honor of the school’s patron, St. Charles
Borromeo and for the special honors the school bestowed on
graduates Father W. Jared Wicks, S.J. ’47, James P. Finn ’65,
and David L. Pemberton Jr. ’79.
A festive Mass was celebrated by Bishop Frederick F.
Campbell, D.D., Ph.D., and concelebrated by many alumni and
guest priests. During the liturgy Bishop Campbell blessed and
officially dedicated the spacious new Walter Student Commons
and the St. Charles Student Services & Fine Arts Center.
Both of these wondrous, new facilities, available for use by
all St. Charles students every day of the school year, have
amplified the capability of the St. Charles campus in providing
comfortable and nurturing areas for the student body. Funding
for the $5.5-million additions to the original St. Charles building
constructed in 1923-25 was accelerated through naming
opportunities and private charitable giving.
Fr. Jared Wicks, S.J.:

recognized
theological scholar
and author, Father
Wicks, a 1947 St.
Charles graduate,
has devoted much
of his career to
championing a
closer relationship,
if not eventual
unity, of the
Roman Catholic
Church with other
Christian faiths.
He is recognized
as an expert on
Martin Luther and
the ecumenical aspects of the Second Vatican Council. He served
25 years at the prestigious School of Theology at the Pontifical
Gregorian University in Rome. There he served as lecturer,
faculty dean, and director of the Department of Fundamental
Theology. Having completed his assignment there, he returned
to the U.S. three years ago.
Today, he is a theological scholar in residence at John Carroll
University where he conducts research, writes, and teaches
theology courses. He serves as celebrant for one Sunday and two
weekday Masses in nearby parishes, and keeps busy authoring
book reviews and articles and lecturing at John Carroll.
Father Wicks maintains ties with organizations and causes to
which he has devoted his career. His work takes him all over the
world, as he travels to Rome and other international locations
gathering material for publications and as an active member
of groups like the Lutheran-Catholic International Dialogue
Commission.
He maintains his special ties with the Gregorian University
as an active member of its review board on implementation of
long-range planning. In his seemingly tireless work on behalf
of Christian unity, Wicks participates in Lutheran-Catholic
dialogues. Wicks serves on the advisory board of the Institute
of Catholic Studies at John Carroll and the Cleveland Diocese’s
Borromeo College Seminary board of directors.
Father Wicks attended The Ohio State University before
returning to St. Charles College-Seminary. In 1949 he entered
the Milford Novitiate and later earned a BA degree at Xavier
(OH) University. He earned a master’s in philosophy at West
Baden in Indiana and taught at St. Ignatius High School in
Cleveland. After additional theology courses, he was ordained in
1962, and completed his theology studies the next year.

Finn earned an undergraduate degree from Kenyon College in
1970 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1974. After
leaving Harvard, he joined Ogilvy & Mather, an international
St. Charles Preparatory School

advertising, marketing and public relations agency, and was
ultimately given responsibility for the company’s Sears account.
He later joined the family business with brothers and fellow
St. Charles graduates Michael L. Finn ’61 and John F. Finn
’65, as a principal in the operation of Gardner, Inc., a group of
wholesale distribution companies.
Jim is an active member of several community and corporate
boards. He served as chairman of the St. Charles Advisory
Board from 2003-2006. In that period St. Charles enjoyed
unprecedented growth and improvement to its physical plant
and secured its future through a campaign to benefit students
and faculty and to fund advanced technology.
Jim from 2001 to 2005 served as the lead-gift chairman for
The Campaign for St. Charles Phase I, which raised a record $10
million for his alma mater. The campaign had a dramatic impact
on the school’s endowment funds for need-based student aid and
faculty recruitment and retention. Jim continues to serve on the
school’s Advisory Board and the St. Charles Endowment Board
of Trustees.
In his capacity as board chairman, Jim devoted hundreds of
hours to extensive meetings with architects, planners, builders
and the St. Charles administrative leadership for the design
and construction of the Robert C. Walter Student Commons and
Student Services & Fine Arts Center. His expertise in financing,
construction and space planning was an invaluable asset for St.
Charles.
Jim and his wife, Susan Finn, Ph.D., are members of St.
Andrew Parish, and are the parents of a son, John. Together
with his alumni brothers, Jim helped establish The Finn
Family Chair at St. Charles, an endowment that supports the
recruitment and retention of St. Charles faculty.

in 2003, David is an active member of the board’s development
committee. In 2004, he was appointed chairman of the Alumni
Annual Fund appeal which raised a record-high $400,000 for
need-based student aid. David’s success was attributed to his
daily outreaching to St. Charles alumni. During the appeal he
personally contacted over 350 alumni. Because his efforts were
a huge success, he was asked by principal Dominic J. Cavello to
chair the campaign for a second year in 2004.
Under David’s two-year service as chairman, the Alumni
Annual Fund raised a record $809,500 for student financial
aid. His success was helped considerably by his friendly and

Recognize and cherish connections
with others, Wicks advises
Upon receiving The Borromean Medal for Distinguished
Achievement at the 2006 Feast Day Mass, Father Jared
Wicks S.J. ’47, observed “such a moment turns on a bright
light in my efforts to understand my own life to this point.
What the light shows is a huge network of dear people,
where I am but one node or knot among many. Or it’s a
vast web, where I am one strand connected with many,
many generous persons.”
He went on to say: “The moment brings to mind hundreds
of companions on my life’s journey, the precious companions
along the way, who have helped me, who have said
wonderfully supportive words. With reverence I pass over
the first and obvious sources of personal support, but I have
to mention three individuals.
“Here at St. Charles, in the old college, I was guided
through my first course on modern European history
by Father Paul O’Dea. Under his gentle, but effective,
guidance, I took up reading biographies of major figures of
the Reformation century, beginning with Martin Luther
(with whom I am still “conversing” about Christian doctrine
and theology) and Fr. O’Dea had me move on to Ignatius
Loyola, founder of our Society of Jesus. Here I cannot begin
to say how grateful I am for that meeting with Ignatius, for
me a life-changing moment. Of Ignatius, I’ve become an
unworthy disciple and son.
“Another crucial strand in the web connected with me in
my mid-30’s at the University of Muenster, in Germany,
with a not yet famous professor, whom one day I visited at
the Graduate School of Theology, to ask him to take me on
as a doctoral candidate. This was Father Joseph Ratzinger,
who last year changed his name to Benedict XVI. He
pondered my ecumenical aspirations, and with a kind word
told me of a new colleague about to join the teaching faculty,
Erwin Iserloh, with whom I had a three-year intensive
initiation into Reformation scholarship. How fortunate I
was in Muenster.
“A third person much in my thoughts today would be
here, but he was called home to our Lord in May 2000, my
1947 St. Charles classmate and Jesuit brother, Father Art
McGovern. With him, dear Mac, I was lucky enough to be
connected in an off-and-on conversation of over 50 years
about life in our Lord’s service, about serving others by
teaching, researching, and writing, and about how fortunate
we both were to be well prepared by our St. Charles
formation and then spurred on by our esteemed fellow
Jesuits.
“To end, I urge all of you to join me in setting aside any
illusion of independence and self-sufficiency in life. See
the network, sense the web. Acknowledge and cherish
those connections, those links. We have many near to us
now, and will have in the future – helpers and companions.
From them we receive much, from them we are aided to
give much to our world.”

one-on-one contact with alumni to
encourage their support.
In June 2005, David and his family
established The Pemberton Family
Scholarship at St. Charles which provides
a full scholarship to a qualified student
in need. David was also responsible
for leading his 25-year class reunion’s
challenge grant for the Class of 1979. He
is the father of four, including 2000 St.
Charles graduate, Joe Pemberton, and
is a member of St. Patrick Church in
Columbus.
David earned a history degree from
Denison University in 1983 and was a
regular on the university’s dean’s list. In
1985 he joined Litel Telecommunications
Corp. where he rose to director of sales in
1987 and was promoted to vice-president
and general manager in 1991.
He has served his community by
volunteering for the Delaware County
United Way, the Delaware Kiwanis
Club, and both the Columbus Area and
Worthington Chambers of Commerce. He
is a member of the board of Suburban
Natural Gas and is a trustee of the Ohio
Gas Association.

Papal Nuncio to United Nations
delivered Borromean Lecture at St. Charles
S
t. Charles Preparatory School’s
annual Borromean Lecture this
year featured the commentary of
His Excellency, Archbishop Celestino
Migliore, Apostolic Nuncio and
Permanent Observer of the Holy See to
the United Nations in New York City.
He addressed church officials, business
and civic leaders, and the school’s entire
student body of 576 young men at a
noon luncheon on March 2. For each
of the students he brought a special
Papal Rosary personally blessed by Pope
Benedict XIV. The event’s setting was the
beautiful new Robert C. Walter Student
Commons.
Archbishop Migliore
Archbishop Migliore was appointed to
his current post in 2002 by his holiness
Pope John Paul II. Migliore entered the
Holy See’s diplomatic service in 1980
after graduating from the Pontifical
Academy for Ecclesiastical Diplomacy.
He has since served as attaché and second
secretary to the apostolic delegation
in Angola (1980-84) before serving in
Apostolic Nunciatures in the U.S. (’84-
’88); Egypt (’88-’89), and Poland (’89- 92).
While under-secretary of the section for
relations with states of the Secretariat
of State, Migliore was in charge of
fostering relations with countries having
no formal relations with the Vatican.
He led delegations to China, Vietnam,
North Korea, and at numerous United
Nations conferences. He also represented
the Holy See at many events held in
European capitals on issues related to the
World Trade Organization, the Economic
Commission for Europe, the European
Union, and the Middle East.

St. Charles Preparatory School
established the Borromean Lectures
seven years ago in honor of the school’s
patron saint, St. Charles Borromeo. The
lecture series provides a forum at St.
Charles to attract annually to campus a
speaker of national renown to address
topics of morals and ethics in society,
business, and government.

Papal Nuncio explores word
trends in Borromean Lecture
The Archbishop’s enticing lecture topic
was entitled: The Most Searched Words:
From Integrity to Truthiness. What’s
Next? In his presentation, the Archbishop
related that his lecture topic evolved from
one of the special annual reports produced
by the Dilenschneider Group, a prominent
public relations firm headquartered
in New York City. (It was through the
initiative and support of that company’s
founder and owner, Robert L. Dilenschneider,
that the Borromean Lectures
came about in the fall of 2000, and continue
each year. Dilenschneider is a 1961
St. Charles graduate.)
One of the reports that Migliore reviewed
was entilted “Noteworthy Trends
for 2007,” which identified two of the
most-searched words on the website of the
authoritative Merriam-Webster dictionary.
The words were integrity in 2005 and
truthiness in 2006.
In his presentation, the Archbishop
described how the trilogy of the principles
of integrity, truth, added with that of
fraternity, must each be given its proper
importance if they are to “give rise to
social and international relations that can
meet the challenges of today’s world.”
To describe this special relationship,
Migliore pointed to a prominent symbol of
the “Borromean Rings,”which appears on
the Borromeo family crest in the Walter
Student Commons. This trio of rings is
intertwined in such a way that removing
any of the rings would cause the entire
structure to fall apart. Scientists today
use the term “borromean” to describe
atomic nuclei that behave in a similar
way: if any one is removed, the rest of the
nucleus disintegrates.
The archbishop said that the term
truthiness is a satirical term coined and
popularized on the cable TV comedy
“news” show, The Colbert Report. It refers
to a condition or quality of preferring concepts
or facts one wishes to be true, rather
than concepts or facts that are known to
be true.
“It is used by those who claim to know
something intuitively, instinctively, with
no regard to evidence or logic, to intellectual
examination, or actual facts,” Migliore
said. He quoted Merriam-Webster
president John Morse as saying, “We’re
at a point where what constitutes truth is
a question on a lot of people’s minds, and
truth has come up for grabs.”
Migliore said, “It points out that our
society has a problem with the concept
of truth. And yet, truth and integrity,
once they are lived out by individuals and
societies, become virtues and can well be
considered two indispensable rings that
build, sustain and season with happiness
our contemporary society.”
The etymology of Integrity, the second
of the three concepts, the archbishop
noted, comes from the Latin adjective
integer (whole, complete) and comprises
the personal inner sense of “wholeness”
that derives from honesty and consistent
uprightness of character. “It is often
understood not only as a consistent and
coherent behavior, but as a mindset and
lifestyle aimed at the discovery of some
truth,” the archbishop said.
As for Fraternity, Migliore noted, it
serves as the third ring to form an inseparable
trilogy. “Fraternity is somehow
the missing link, the missing ring that
hinders us from discerning the truth and
achieving wholeness,” he explained. “It
may become 2007’s most searched word,”
the archbishop speculated.
“This wish I have for you today,” he
said, “that you may experience and establish
day after day more fraternity among
you. This will be the ring in the blazon of
this school, that paves the way for clarity
of mind to discern and understand the
truth. It will pave the way to reach the
sense of personal and social wholeness.”
Archbishop Migliore noted how his life
in the priesthood came about through his
admiration for a local priest’s wholistic
character, wisdom, and availability to
serve the poorest of the poor. “I said to
myself that I wanted to be like him. I did
not yet know at the time what it meant
to be a priest, but I wanted to be like that
pastor who put himself at the service of
all.”
Shortly after his ordination, Father
Migliore was called to his bishop’s office
and was informed that he was being sent
to Rome to begin specialized studies for
diplomatic representation of the Holy See
around the world. “I thought it was a bad
dream,” Migliore said. “I knew nothing
of this kind of work… I was afraid that
it was bureaucratic work, office work, in
which I would lose touch with the People
of God. My immediate response was that I
was unable to accept.”
But his Bishop convinced him by drawing
a comparison to Saint Peter. He
remarked, “From a man who barely knew
his own geography of Galilee and the skill
of fishing, Jesus made him a man capable
of confronting life in the capital of the
world. With that, I accepted my bishop’s
invitation having faith in his words and I
never regretted having said ‘yes.’”

Veteran custodian uses
artistic ability
Jeff Broadnax, a custodian at St. Charles
for more than 20 years, flashes a big
friendly smile to all he meets as he quietly
goes about his daily duties.
An ordained minister and musician,
he’s well known for special St. Charles
T-shirts he designs and sells around
campus. He also sells hats, carry bags,
and Polo shirts. It’s a way, he said, “to
glorify God using my artistic abilities,
and also as a way to generate a second
income.”
He recently expanded his product line
to include what could possibly become an
entrepreneurial bonanza: a mouse pad for
computer desktops, certainly an item that
everyone needs for home and office.
Broadnax sold all 20 of his “prototypes”
which sported a color aerial photo of the
St. Charles campus. He will be producing
a new version after the new turf field is
finished. He hopes to sell them not only to
students, but also to other members of the
St. Charles community here in Columbus
and around the country.
After Broadnax and his wife, Pat,
helped co-found Restoration Ministries in
1993, the thought came to him after much
prayer to spread the Gospel on T-shirts.
Through a friend he was able to find a
screen printer, and two years later he
found a partner to join him in a T-shirt
business.
After coming up with a design idea,
Broadnax “draws” a likeness on a
computer and then prints a sample. He
shows the sample around to students
and faculty to gauge their interest. If the
design is a hit, he prints up a dozen or so.
He also designs shirts to the specifications
of customers. There is no product catalog
yet, so in the meantime Broadnax
continues to print a few items at a time

Enlisting federal help against cancer

Freshman wins over cancer; urges
help for others in visit to U.S. Capitol
St. Charles freshman Chase Meacham
has been an inspirational model to students,
faculty, and staff of our school
this year with his show of courage and
resilience in fighting osteosarcoma, a type
of bone cancer. Now pronounced “cancer
free,” Chase has taken up a new fight:
inspire others to overcome all forms of
pediatric cancer.
In his battle with the disease, Chase
endured an array of difficult, painful, and
invasive medical procedures at Children’s
Hospital in Columbus. To the credit
of his parents, 1984 alumnus Jeff and
wife, Kim, since the terrible diagnosis in
Chase’s 8th grade school year, they made
the commitment to give him a “normal”
life while battling the disease. (Incidentally,
Chase’s uncle, Chris, is a 1982
graduate.)
In mid-March Chase made public in
Washington D.C. his personal battle when
he appeared in the U.S. Capitol building’s
house terrace to relate his struggle with
the disease.
Chase responded to an invitation from
Columbus Congresswoman Deborah Pryce
as she and other government leaders
introduced the Conquer Childhood Cancer
Act of 2007. The legislation seeks to eradicate
childhood cancers by directing $100
million dollars during a five-year period
to help expand childhood cancer research
and several other initiatives. Cancer is
the number one cause of death by disease
for American children.
In his presentation, Chase spoke of
leaving the hospital after his last treatment:
“Finally, the last day came. My
mother and I stood up, turned, and we
cried in each other’s arms. I had done it.
After nine long, grueling months, I had
finally beaten cancer.
“As I walked out of the hospital, I could
not help but think of all the other children
there that night; all the children that
would not be leaving with me. I had won
my battle, but cancer had by no means
lost. Cancer was stronger than ever; the
children behind me knowing it more than
anyone. Some of the strongest “soldiers”
this country has ever seen aren’t even old
enough to drive yet. It should not be this
way.”
In late April, Chase and his dad filmed
commercial spots for an upcoming PGA
Nationwide Men’s tour event coming to
the Ohio State University’s Scarlet golf
course. Proceeds from that event will go
to the oncology department at Children’s
Hospital.
“We need to find a cure for the parents
of these children who have no choice but
to helplessly watch as their son or daughter
fights a battle they would gladly fight
in their place,” Chase said in his Washington
testimony. “We need to find a cure
for those lonely children, sitting in bed
today – a bed that is not theirs. We need
to find a cure for those children . . . Cancer
is their fight, but it is our responsibility.
I am here today to thank you for your
help and support. Together, we will find a
cure.”

Spectacular staging
For its annual spring musical the St. Charles drama
department presented in the Robert C. Walter Student
Commons the Central Ohio premiere of Flight of the
Lawnchair Man. It was the first theatrical production in
that spacious new facility.

George Stevens received the inaugural St. Charles
Advisory Board Chairman’s Award from Principal
Dominic J. Cavello. The award is presented to a senior
student who has worked hard, embodies the ideals of
St. Charles and demonstrates a concern for those in
need. The recognition included a $500 honorarium and
a book and was sponsored by board chairman Robert
W. Horner III ’79.
Thomas Hurst received the inaugural Monsignor
Thomas M. Bennett Book Award, given to a deserving
academically successful senior in recognition of his
concern for St. Charles, and his acts of Christian
charity to those in need. The award, presented here by
Principal Dominic J. Cavello, is sponsored by Dr. Dan
Ross, Class of 1967. It carries a $500 cash prize and
a four-volume set of books titled, The History of the
English-Speaking Peoples, by Winston Churchill.

(OH) University with a finance degree
and went to work in sales for Parker
Hannifin in Cleveland and San Diego.
He returned to Columbus two years later
and teamed with his brother L. Michael
Mampieri (a St. Francis DeSales grad)
to open M & I Landscapes, a landscape
design/build company.
Mampieri played golf for the Cardinals
all four years at St. Charles and he’s
coached the school’s junior varsity and
freshmen golf teams for the past two
years. Assisting him with the varsity
team will be Eric Horvath ’93, the varsity
B coach.
Anthony and his wife of almost five
years, Leeanne Elizabeth Kurgan, an
alumna of Bishop Hartley High School,
live in Reynoldsburg with their two sons,
Luca Michael (2) and Vincent Anthony
(6 months). They’re members of St.
Pius X where Anthony has served on
parish council for the last year and also
volunteers with the Ronald McDonald
House.

player, Ey has
taught 9th and
10th grade English
at St. Charles since
Richard L. Ey ’94 2002. He served
as an assistant
to outgoing varsity soccer coach, Matt
Highland, the last five seasons.
Ey graduated from Ohio University
(1999) with a degree in English and
taught Spanish at Washington
Courthouse High School (1999-2002).
He recently received his master of arts
in liberal science from Ohio Dominican
University. Ey and his wife, Brie, reside
in the Eastmoor area.

Sanders in state tourney
Senior Jeremy Sanders made a historic
return to the Division I state wrestling
tournament this winter. After making
last year’s state tournament, he’s only
the second wrestler in school history to
qualify for multiple state events. Ben
Wickert ’01 qualified for three state
tourney events from 1999-2001.
Sanders is also one of only nine St.
Charles state mat qualifiers in school
history. This season he wrestled at 171
pounds and qualified for the state meet by
winning the sectional in his weight class
and finishing third in the district meet. At
the state tournament he went 1-2.
Shannon runs to state
Junior Jack Shannon gained beneficial
experience last fall in the Division I state
cross country championships by finishing
64th out of 150 runners in a time of
16 minutes, 47 seconds. He was also
recognized as an all-Ohio academic award
winner. Shannon now has his sights on a
return trip to meet at Scioto Downs in his
senior season.
He earned the team’s Brian Wollett
MVP Award for the second straight year
and won individual honors at the New
Junior Jack Shannon

Albany Invitational and the Central
Catholic League Meet. Shannon placed
4th in the district (the team 5th) and
secured the state bid by placing 12th
at the regional meet where the team
finished 11th. This winter he turned in
an exciting 2nd place performance at the
Division I level in the Ohio indoor state
championships in the 3200 meter run.
Golf team 5th in state
St. Charles finished 5th in the Division
I state golf tournament at Ohio State
University’s famed Scarlet course last
fall. The team shot a consistent 328-331
during the two-day event. The team was
lead by junior Chase Williams who shot
a two-round 160, followed by senior Tony
Trace (164), senior Andy Botts (166),
junior Michael Kinkopf (173), and senior
Andrew Mackessy (173).
Williams was selected as the team’s
MVP and was named 2nd team All-
Ohio. Mackessy and Trace served as the
season’s senior co-captains.
This was the first time since 1992
that the Cardinals qualified for the
state tournament and the first ever
as a Division I team. They earned
their way with a second-place finish
in the sectionals and third-place
finish in the districts. The team won
three tournaments during the season:
The Worthington Invitational, The
Worthington Christian Invitational, and
The Dublin Jerome Invitational (for a
second year in a row).
Varsity coach Bart Mahoney said that
figuring in the very strong returning
group of golfers, the team has an
exceptional opportunity to qualify for a
return trip to the state tournament.
Track team celebrates tradition,
new record board

Charles track and field team got together
for a celebratory luncheon to dedicate
the new record board that hangs in the

record holding athletes, their parents,
families and friends; and past and present
coaches. Lunch was provided by the Old
Bag of Nails, and while everyone ate, the
athletes reminisced about their fondest
memories of St. Charles track and field.
The senior record holder present was
Robert Carlisle (’78) who remembered
how different things were when he was
on the team. “My friend and I would drive
a little Volkswagen Beetle to the meets.
We would have to hang his pole vault pole
out of the back window and tie a little
yellow bow on it so other drivers could
see it,” he recalled. The CCL has long
since stopped having the pole vault as an
approved event, but still allow VWs.
Record holders from four different
decades enjoyed seeing each other,
taking pictures with the new board and
remembering the good old days. Among
athletes present were three who are
currently competing in college track and
field. They are Derek Hoye ’04 of Georgia
Tech, Robert Orellana ’04 of Ohio State
and Tony Connor ’05 of Kent State.

Tournament Champions
The St. Charles hockey team celebrates its tournament
victory in the Landon Ramirez Tournament last
December. Later in the year the team fell in the first
round of the Division I state hockey tournament to
Dublin Coffman and finished with an overall record of
15-13-2. Coach Dale Jordan’s team placed fourth in the
Capital Hockey Conference with a 7-4-1 league record.
Team MVP honors were split between junior goalie Kyle
Ray and junior forward Darryl Mason.
Reed Team Player Awardee
Gary Reed (left) and wife, P.J., with St. Charles senior
football player, Grant Dilley, presented the 2006 Sean
P. Reed Memorial Team Player Award at the fall sports
banquet. The award goes to a non-starter who has
contributed both on the practice and playing field.
It honors a player who shows genuine love to play
football and unselfishly puts the team above himself,
Gary Reed said. The award honors the memory of
the Reeds’ son, Sean, who passed away the winter of
his senior year at St. Charles. It comes with a walnut
shadowbox presentation and $250 that’s donated in the
recipient’s name to the charity of his choice.

Swim team wins state
runner-up honors
Matching its best-ever finish, St. Charles
won the Division I runner-up title in the
state swim meet in Canton last fall. The
200 free relay and 400 free relay teams
won second place in their events and the
200 medley relay came in fourth.
Meanwhile the coaching staff was
honored as the “Central District Coaches
of the Year” for the second straight
season.
This year 10 swimmers qualified for and
scored points in the state championship
meet in which the Cardinals finished
behind perennial champion Cincinnati

Bloodmobile visit. Held in the school’s multi-purpose
building in April, the volunteer effort produced 153
units of whole blood -- 28 units more than last year’s
total. The drive was part of the 2006-07 Columbus Area
private/parochial high school blood campaign. St.
Charles has won the school campaign three straight
years and 16 of the last 17. St. Charles nurse Betsy
Mason and Cardinal parent and school volunteer, Bill
Nye organized the drive. “The men here at school thrive
on doing things for other people, and this is a great
way for them to give back to the community,” Mason
said.

Jennings as All-Ohio. Brown and Martin
shared the Kenneth Flaherty Award as
the team’s co-MVPs.

new red and white geraniums in its Sundial planter.

Five St. Charles students were recognized
at the 16th annual All-Star salute breakfast
on May 4 at the Confluence Park
Restaurant. The event and awards were
sponsored by the Northwest Counseling
Services. The students were recognized
for their academic performance, demonstrated
leadership in their schools, and
participation in volunteer community
service.
Those honored and some of their activities:
senior Jack Bruce, a National Merit
Finalist and Student Council president
who is a Columbus Catholic Worker and
Shepherd’s Corner volunteer; sophomore
Thomas McJoynt-Griffith, the Student
Council secretary and member of the
varsity soccer team who is involved in
the Christ the King Appalachia Service
Project and St. Catharine’s Youth Group;
Junior Michael Ryan, presidential
award for Academic Excellence, stage
crew member, and Student Council vicepresident
who works with SPICE (Special
People in Catholic Education), Children’s
Hospital, and St. Catharine’s youth group;

Chess Club gift provides needed
game boards
The St. Charles Chess Club was the beneficiary
of a special gift from St. Charles
parent Dr. James Aman who donated 15
new chess sets and roll-up boards to the
school last fall.
The father of sophomore AliReza
Shirvani-Aman, Dr. Aman is department
chair of computer science at Xavier University
in Chicago. Describing himself as
an “old chess nut,” he holds a tournament
director certification from the U.S. Chess
Federation. He works chess tournaments
handling pairing and floor monitor duties.
He said he was prompted to offer the
gift when his son Ali told him the club
was going to have to limit the number of
members because they didn’t have enough
sets and boards for everyone to play and
practice.

equipment should not stand between
these men and competing as represen-

Trash and treasure
Members of the St. Charles Student Council and
Environmental Service Club in March
participated in a clean-up project in with the Friends of
Alum Creek Tributaries. The groups, led by St. Charles
faculty members Linda Haas and Aaaron Schrein,
cleared away trash and debris from sensitive areas
along Alum Creek, the greenway trail, and roadside
creekbank running between Wolfe Park and Main
Street. The student volunteers collected 40 bags of
trash, not including 12 bags of recyclables (glass,
aluminum, etc.). They also pulled from Alum Creek 32
individual items too large to fit in trash bags. Among
other things, those included a car grill, bumper, and
drive train. Recycling of some metal items produced
about $50 that will help support activities of the new
environmental club being formed at St. Charles

Ali’s mother, Shieda Shirvani-Aman,
was also very involved with the club. She
often provided transportation for the boys
to and from the matches, which were held
once a week at Fort Hayes.
The Chess Club, which senior guidance
counselor Ted Hummer has moderated
since the mid-1980s, has been in the
Columbus Area School Chess League for
about 15 years. The league season runs
from January through February. This
year’s team president was senior Vikas
Choudhary.
“St. Charles this season fielded two
teams but usually only one team competed
each week,” Hummer said. Other
members of the league include Columbus
Alternative, Briggs, Brookhaven, Centennial,
Eastmoor, Linden-McKinley, Marion
Franklin, Mifflin, Northland, West, Whetstone,
Upper Arlington, Bexley, Columbus
Academy, Delaware Hayes, Grandview,
Hilliard Davidson, Bishop Hartley, Dublin
Jerome, New Albany, and The Graham
School.
First Jazz Ensemble CD produced
in new SC studio
The St. Charles band program has truly
fallen in love with its new home, the Monsignor
F. Thomas Gallen ’40 Music Room
on the third floor of the Student Services
& Fine Arts Center. During the previous
two years, musicians were forced to practice
in the cramped “Tower Room.”
Mr. Rick Brunetto said the new surroundings
help bring about significant
improvement to the band program. There
is a large space for the full ensemble and
the office space serves as a control room.
As a surprise bonus, Brunetto found the
acoustics in the new music room are ideal
for recording. As a result, the St. Charles
band program now has a recording studio

with newly-purchased recording equipment
and many new instruments. These
were funded by proceeds from the sale
of Bobble Heads, the annual jazz band
dinner dance, and generous contributions
from the band boosters organization.
Brunetto describes the studio as state
of the art. It features a digital computerbased
recording system with mixer,
speakers, and microphones. He says there
has been much student interest in the
studio, and he’s now offering a weekly
class in audio engineering.
Sessions are held on Tuesdays after
school. Students learn the theory of the
analog and digital recording process,
acoustics of sound, console and microphone
technology, and the mixdown
process of mastering a CD.
Using the new equipment, the students
of the new music technology class engineered
and produced Take ONE, the St.
Charles Jazz Ensemble’s first CD recording.
The ensemble spent many hours over
the past semester working in the studio.
The CD was released at the band’s annual
dinner dance May 5 at the 94th Aero
Squadron Restaurant.
“This new facility is a joy to teach in
and I can see a difference in the quality of
our music making and the response of our
students,” Brunetto said. “It will surely
help us attract talented music students to
St. Charles in the future,” he predicted.
The new CD includes many swing
classics and favorites that the band has
performed during the past several years.

Spaghetti Dinner
After an absence of many years, the
St. Charles Spaghetti Dinner returned
amid many highly favorable comments
on February 25. The St. Charles Alumni
Association, with the expert assistance of
Berwick Party House and its owners, the
Susi family, sponsored the event. Held
in the spacious new Robert C. Walter
Student Commons, the event drew more
than 1,100 people who enjoyed a great
dinner, friendly atmosphere, great camaraderie,

Full House
St. Charles drew a big crowd to its 2006 Open House
for eighth-grade boys and their parents last November.
More than 240 young men and their family members attended.
Afternoon events began in the campus theatre

Eight ’07 class reunions
to celebrate Aug. 17-19
St. Charles will be the meeting site this
summer, Aug. 17-18-19, for a Combined
Class Reunion Celebration for the classes
of 1957 (Golden), 1962, 1967, 1977, 1982
(Silver), 1987, 1992, and 1997.
The Class of 1972 will meet June 9 to
accommodate the vacation schedules of its
small class of 19 members.
St. Charles adopted the combined class
reunion format last year. It was held on
the campus in the beautiful new Robert
C. Walter Student Commons, which
proved to be an ideal setting for the
event honoring all reunion classes. This
new space and its 13 cherry-wrapped
support columns provide a special
venue to recognize all 4,881 St. Charles
Preparatory School alumni from the Class
of 1927 to the Class of 2006 on beautiful
tempered glass panels.
Each class schedules its own
individualized weekend activities. All
classes then gather together on the
campus in the Walter Student Commons
for combined special Saturday afternoon
and evening programs organized entirely
by St. Charles.
All members of this year’s special
reunion classes should have received a
letter in late March detailing preliminary
activities that their class reunion
committees have planned. A letter
detailing specific times, activities, and
costs will be sent in early June. If you did
not receive one of these letters, please
contact alumni director Louis J. Fabro ’83,

by phone at 614-252-9288 ext. 21.
All reunion groups will meet together
as a single community for a Saturday
afternoon and evening program that
includes campus tours; an all-class Mass
concelebrated by alumni priests in Mother
of Mercy Chapel; “State-of-the-School”
presentations, class photos; and an “open”
cocktail reception and buffet dinner
(around $40 cost per person) in the Walter
Student Commons.
This same format was used last year
when the classes of 1956, 1961, 1976,
1981, 1986, 1991, 1996, and 2001
convened at St. Charles in the first
combined reunion. The atmosphere
created by five decades of Cardinal
alumni joining together was very special
and the camaraderie shared amongst
graduates was an uplifting experience.
Vital to a reunion’s success is the
willingness of classmates to step forward
to assist. You can be a big help by
doing one or all of the following tasks:
providing/confirming your current
contact information for future reunion
communications; volunteer to make
one-on-one phone calls to classmates to
encourage their attendance at the August
event; or to indicate what activities
YOU would like to see planned for the

will boost the University of Notre Dame athletic teams as members
of the school’s “Blue” athletic cheerleading squad. (There is a
second, “Green” squad as well.) This will be Bennett’s second
year and Taynor’s first. “I, like most here, had a desire to be on
‘that’ field,” Taynor said. “I knew Preston was a cheerleader the
year before, so I thought I’d give it a shot. I’m glad I did. Both
the guys and girls on the team are great, and are already close
friends.”

where he’s a neurobiology

St. Charles alumnus Adam Ritter ’03
“held court” at the University of Arizona
last fall when the senior was selected the
school’s Homecoming King in addition
to being crowned a national champion
twice at the 2007 NCAA championships in
Division I swimming.
Ritter is now poised to gain a spot on
the U. S. Olympic Swim Team to compete
for gold in Beijing at the 2008 Summer
Olympics. The U.S. Olympic swim trials
will be held in July 2008. The Olympic
Games start a month later. “I’ve made my
time standards in multiple events already
for the Olympic Trials,” he said.
Ritter went to college well prepared
for more than athletic competition. He’s

Kyle L. Barger, a senior at Wittenberg
University, was one of
only 13 students selected by the
school’s department of management
for distinguished honors
for his senior portfolios, which
displayed “the highest caliber of
work.”
Students use the portfolios for
job interviews and admission
to graduate or professional programs.
They serve as a compilation
of the seniors’ management
knowledge and experiences,
and exceptional evidence of
their ability to apply management
concepts and theory.
John A. “Alex” Lewis graduated
from Miami (OH) University
and was commissioned as
an Ensign in the United States
Navy on May 5th, 2007. He was
accepted in the Navy ROTC
Scholarship Program upon
graduation from St. Charles
and now plans to attend flight
school this fall after working at
the Miami University ROTC Unit
this summer.
2002
Timothy “TJ” Davis is a parole
officer with the state of Virginia
living in Charlottesville. He
graduated from Bowling Green
State University last August with
degrees in criminal justice and
psychology. At BGSU he was
active in Delta Tau Delta Fraternity,
Dance Marathon, and Interfraternity
Committee. He plans
to pursue a master’s in public
policy at Virginia this fall.
Davis is a member of Virginia’s
Crisis Response Team. He was
paged and placed on alert for
possible assignment in Blacksburg
the morning of the tragedy
at Virginia Tech. His group was
not activated, but many others
were. He reported that the entire
state went into mourning and
all you can “see everywhere you
go is orange and maroon,” the
school colors.
Benjamin J. Tilton is working
as an analyst at Normura Securities,
an investment banking
firm in New York City.

Joe Pemberton has enrolled in
a two-year management training
program at Suburban Natural
Gas in its Cygnet, Ohio office.
Joe joins his father David

was a daunting one. It included advanced
hydrolics, Chinese Civilization, and
advanced concrete (“much harder than it
sounds,” he says.)
Ritter culminated his college swimming
career this winter by winning a national
championship in the 200 IM with the
third-fastest time in history, pro or
amateur. He also placed third at the
competition in the 200 freestyle, was fifth
in the 100 freestyle, and competed with
the Wildcats’ championship 800 freestyle
relay team.
In his career he won multiple
All-American honors with NCAA
championships in five events, helping the
Wildcats finish second, third, third, and
fourth in Division I during his time in
Tucson.

published in the Arizona Star Gazette,
Ritter said, “Ever since I’ve been here
(UA) I’ve been swimming with gold
medalists and national champions.

On the winner’s podium at the 2006 Division I national
swimming championships, Ritter holds his championship
trophy in one hand and flashes the sign for
“Wildcats,” Arizona’s school nickname.
He attended Ohio Wesleyan for
two years and played varsity
lacrosse both years. After the
death of his friend, Brian Muha,
he took a break from college
and moved to Breckenridge,
Colorado where he worked as a
ski lift operator. A year later he
enrolled at Arizona State University
to study human communications.
While at ASU he was offered a
job as a coach with the University
of Colorado men’s lacrosse
program and moved to Denver
with friends from Ohio Wesleyan.
He also took up banking
with Wells Fargo. In addition, he
said “I was pursing a career with
the fire department at the time
but realized it was not for me
so I saw an opportunity in law
enforcement with the Denver
Police Department. I have only
been on the force for one year
but every minute has been a
blast,” he said. In his free time
he loves to snowboard.
On a related note, McGrail and
1986 grad Mark Belusak not
only work for the same police
department but are both assigned
to the same district --
downtown!
John Passaglia has been
working in investment banking
in New York since graduating
from Vanderbilt University in
2002. He works at JPMorgan
with fellow St. Charles alumnus

Chris Roscoe has worked at

and is graduating from The Ohio

He and his wife, Jaclyn (nee
Broerman), were married in
2003 and live in Lewis Center.

Initially, there was a shock factor,” he
said. “But then I started believing that if I
train with them, I can compete with them.
This is the best training atmosphere in
the world. That’s why I have been able to
accomplish everything I set out to do four
years ago.”
Ritter isn’t concerned about athletic
burnout that might affect his swimming.
“I’ve improved every year and am
enjoying the sport now more than I ever
have,” he said. “Without a doubt,” he
said, “I’m going to the Olympic trials in
’08 and hopefully swim for as long as I
can. I was the youngest finalist in the
100m free at 21,” he recalled, “and the
second youngest finalist in the 200m free
at last year’s world championship trials.”
Commenting about his swimming
experiences at St. Charles, Ritter said,
“Mostly I remember the teammates I had.
I still talk with several of them, which is
a testament to the bond we forged while
working toward a common goal.” He
added that the brotherhood at St. Charles
and on the swim team certainly was
unique and something he feels fortunate
to have been a part of. Ritter joked that
“I would barely have gotten a spot on
SC’s current swim team. Kyle (coach Kyle
Goodrich ’95) really has those guys going
in the right direction!”
Kip D. Malek reports he’s been
involved for seven years in the
video game development field,
particularly in texturing and
character modeling. He’s also
eyeing a possible position as
assistant art teacher. He’d also
like to get involved in concept
art work and concentrate on his
portfolio, but finds it’s difficult
while working full time in his industry.
Zachary T. Ball ’95
1995
Zachary T. Ball has had more
than a distinguished college experience
and early professional
career thus far. In January he
began a new position at Rice
University in Houston as an assistant
professor of chemistry.
Ball earned a Ph.D. in chemistry
from Stanford University in
2004 after graduating from Harvard
University in 1999 magna
cum laude with highest honors
in chemistry.
He is Rice University’s Norman
Hackerman-Welch Young Investigator.
From 2004 to 2006 he
was the Miller Research Fellow
at the Miller Institute for basic
research in science at Berkeley,
Commenting further, Ritter said:
“You’ll hear this from just about every
St. Charles grad -- St. Charles teaches
discipline and loyalty. For the men that
made it through, these ideals are strong
and have created a base that I have tried
to build upon in college. He added, “The
SC motto, Facta non Verba is something
that I live by to this day. Those words
are printed in my room to remind me
everyday that you must live your life the
right way not only through words but
through your actions as well. I couldn’t
give enough credit to the St. Charles
community and what the school has done
for me.”
Adam Ritter’s brother, Kyle ’05, also
is enrolled at the University of Arizona.
They share an apartment there. “Kyle’s
doing great,” Adam said. “He’s getting a
3.9 in mechanical engineering, has made
the dean’s list every semester so far,
and seems to really enjoy being here in
Tucson. I think it’s funny that he’s been
able to get higher grades in college than
he did at St. Charles!”
Adam will remain in Tucson to train for
the World University Games, in Bangkok,
Thailand, in August, and thereafter get
serious about making the 2008 USA
Olympic team.

Jason P. Fenner recently moved
from Columbus to Dallas/ Ft.
Worth to take a work promotion.
Previously a sales manager with
Brinks Home Security in Columbus,
he’s national sales trainer
answering to the vice president
of national sales.
In his new position, Fenner trains
every new sales representative
and manager (about 50 people
a month) who comes to work for
the company. He travels around
the country the remainder of the
month fortifying sales practices
and assisting various branches
with sales. “I greatly miss Buckeye
Country,” he said “especially
being a graduate of Ohio State

Robert E. Ryan III ’93

Robert E. Ryan III was named
principal of Brophy College
Preparatory School in Arizona.
He served most recently as its
assistant principal for ministry.
One of 11 children of Bob ’69
and Mary Ginn Ryan, he earned
a degree in theology from the
University of Notre Dame and
a master’s in education with an
emphasis on curriculum and
instruction from Arizona State
University.
Ryan moved to Phoenix in 1997
and spent his first two years
working as a volunteer at Andre
House, ministering to the homeless.
He joined the staff at Brophy
in 2000 where he has taught
algebra, geometry, and theology.
He also served as department
chair for religious studies
for four years, collaborating with
colleagues in developing the
school’s current religious studies
program.
Ryan has been actively involved
in the national Jesuit Secondary
Education Association, participating
in the three-year program
in Ignatian Leadership as well
as participating in the California
Province Task Force studying
Ignatian formation. He and his
wife, Kathleen, live in Phoenix.

Christopher J. Ellis is director
of acquisitions for Glimcher Realty
Trust in Columbus. He and
his wife, Denise, live in Lewis

James A. Best works for the
Strive Group’s Rock Island
Display Division as the on-site
manger for three locations and
senior IT support specialist for
the company. He lives in Moline,
Illinois with his wife of nearly
eight years, Michelle, and their
daughters, Olivia (7) and Sophia
(5).
He previously worked for Elan
Pharmaceuticals in San Diego
for five years. While in San Diego
he earned a degree in information
technology from the
University of Phoenix. He’s currently
pursuing an MBA in technology
management through
the University of Phoenix. Best
joined the Marine Corps about
a year following graduation from
St. Charles and served at Camp
Pendleton for the duration of his
tour. He entered the IT field as a
computer administrator at a local
junior college. After two years
there, he worked at a computer
store then “joined” the YMCA as
a computer administrator.
Brian Webb is a registered
nurse at Riverside Methodist
Hospital in Columbus. Brian
and his wife Jill are the parents
of Gabriella Marie, born last

Scotland where the oldest brother, Loren, was on a business trip to
inspect new hotels his company might wish to manage there and in
Ireland. Tim graduated from Ohio Dominican University with honors
in the past year and the trip was a special graduation present from
Loren and Tim.

CBS Interactive. He
oversees programming,
product development,
marketing, technology,
and general
administration of CBS
Jason E. Kint ’92
SportsLine.
Most recently Kint
served as vice president of Sporting News (the
online version of the newspaper/magazine formerly
known as The Sporting News) and general
manager of its online division.
CBS noted that Kint worked with The Sporting
News in various capacities for over eleven years
and was instrumental in launching their original
online business. He guided SportingNews.com
through many changes, including major
distribution deals, premium content, emerging
platforms, social networking, and the re-launch of
Sporting News fantasy sports business.
Before his association with Sporting News, Kint
spent two years as executive producer of Times
Mirror Magazines web properties for its 15+
magazines, including GOLFonline, SkiNet, PopSci.
com, and Speedvision.com. He was instrumental in
that company’s acquisition of Interzine Productions
and led its integration in the organization.
From 1994 through 1996, Kint helped found
an early web development company, LiveWire
Marketing, which developed dozens of commercial
and educational sites. His first website was one of
the original sports sites listed in 1994 on what is
now Yahoo!
Kint holds a B.S.B.A. degree from Washington
University in St. Louis with majors in mathematics
and marketing.

’87 grad fulfills dream in
Rockies; now looking to Latin
America
Positive-thinking gurus have nothing on Loren
C. Stone. The 1987 graduate has parlayed his
love of the Rocky Mountains and his dream into
a successful and growing career in the resort and
hospitality industry.
Three years ago he and a partner formed a
management company, Sovereign Hospitality
International, in Colorado after another hotel
management company he had worked for went
out of business. Undaunted by the setback
and previous job losses in the industry due to
“corporate restructurings,” Stone and his partner
formed SHI and took control of a local area resort,
The Lodge & Spa at Breckenridge in Colorado.
This past year, having helped turned around the
fortunes of the Lodge, Stone’s company now has
an ownership position in the facility’s $20 million
expansion and renovation. Stone has used that
success as a platform to form and expand two other
companies, Sovereign Hospitality Management
and Sovereign Development Partners, also based
there in Colorado.
Stone has been living in Mexico for several
months and his business partners are about
to launch a new company in Latin America.
Their efforts have expanded into Mexico with El
Santuario Resort & Spa and more development
and management deals throughout Mexico
and The United States. “I am still working on
becoming fluent in Spanish,” he confessed. “I
should have paid more attention…don’t tell Mr.
Pena.”
Commenting about his recent successes, Stone
said he learned many lessons that have effectively
worked for him. They include: get involved; believe

Championship game and saw his beloved Buckeyes take a beating
at the hands of the University of Florida Gators. O’Reilly, a
Columbus physician specializing in kidney disorders, returned to
Columbus a few days later to find his picture prominently displayed
on the front page of several area community newspapers.
Managing a bright career
Loren C. Stone ’87, south of the border on a trip to visit a resort
hotel overlooking the mountains and the lake in Valle de Bravo,
Mexico. The location is a new resort property that Stone’s company
manages. Stone is attired in a beautiful tunic that serves as a

Getting involved is something Stone not only
preaches, but practices as well. For more than
seven years he’s been actively involved in his local
Breckenridge community serving as an elected
board/committee member for the Summit County
Chamber of Commerce, the Summit Advisory
Board of Economic Development, and the Summit
County Visitor Information Center. He’s also been
a volunteer firefighter.
Stone this past year received the Ben Fogle
Award from the local chamber on which he served
as president in 2004 and 2005. It is the highest
honor recognizing exemplary service and impact
to the business community. He was also recently
appointed as the newest member of the 2007
Marketing Task Force for the International Spa
Association, a group of more than 2,700 members
in 75 countries that serves as the voice for healthy
living and the industry.
After graduation from St. Charles, he earned a
degree at Kent State University and in 1997 moved
to Breckenridge “to pursue my dream of living in
the mountains with the goal of doing something
great.” That same year he and his wife, Shirley
Chapura, were married. Among St. Charles alumni
are Loren’s brothers, Damian S. ’90 and Timothy J.
’96.
Stone said that he has maintained many of his
friendships from St. Charles. “In watching the
growth and expansion of the school it is amazing
that the students today are being given even
greater opportunities to build that foundation
for their first twenty years after graduation. As a
student and alumnus you have things in common
from the superior education you received at St.
Charles and the opportunity to get involved.”
Stone feels, that while choices in everyday life
are not always easy and usually quite hard, he
chooses to “drive through those crossroads and
take control of my life. If you make a wrong choice
in life, make a new one -- take action! Whatever
you want to do it is your prerogative and be proud
of your choice.”

The Columbus Chamber of Commerce named
Schmitt brothers Mike ’82, Mark ’82, Steve ’84, and
J.T.’89 “Small Business Leaders of the Year” at
its 31st annual awards ceremony at the Center of
Science and Industry in November.
The brothers own and operate Jet Container
Company in Columbus. Mike is the company’s
president, Steve, is vice president; Mark, the
controller; and J.T. is operations manager. All four
share in decision making.
The Schmitt brothers in 2006 generously
sponsored a limestone panel located on the west
wall of the Robert C. Walter Student Commons
alongside the stage. It displays one of the space’s
two beautiful St. Charles school crests.
Jet Container is a corrugated container design
and manufacturing company, started by their late
father, Joe, in 1977. The brothers became involved
in the family-owned business at an early age. Jet
Container has $10 million annual revenue and
more than 50 employees.

’80 graduate, a paramedic,
gives wife life-saving kidney
Acting as “their brother’s keeper” has been a
hallmark of St. Charles graduates. In the case of
Daniel A. Nye ’80, he has lived that mantra like
few others have.
Nye, a paramedic with the Columbus Fire
Department, is daily called upon to save the lives
of those in some of the most desperate situations.
In January he answered a life and death situation
very close to home; he gave one of his kidneys to
his wife, Wendy.
Nye came to the aid of his wife who was
diagnosed with lupus in 1993 while pregnant
with the couple’s daughter, Abby. That disease
causes the immune system, for unknown reasons,
to becomes hyperactive and attack normal body
tissues. Lupus can occur at any age and in either
sex, but nine out of ten people afflicted with the
disease are women.
Wendy’s kidneys were affected and major
complications were first seen following the birth of
Abby. The lupus, however, was stabilized for the
most part until last October when the Nyes’ were
told a transplant was needed within a year.
The kidney function deteriorated much more
quickly than expected and Wendy was admitted
to Riverside hospital for implantation of a dialysis
port. Testing was started at once to determine
if there were possible donor matches among any
family members. By the end of January, Dan was
cleared for the transplant. The operation took place
February 13 and was a success.
“I am so grateful that I was able to do this for my
wife,” Nye said. “I consider this a blessing. Thank
God for all the people that helped us through.”
Nye said he and his family were moved “more than
we can say” by the prayers from the St. Charles
community. “The phone calls and even the daily
check-up from a nurse whose son graduated
from St. Charles made the recovery as smooth as
possible. Again thanks to all!”

Marquis D. Miller ’77
Marquis Miller ’77 holds
VP post at Chicago State
Marquis D. Miller ’77 was an outstanding
basketball player at St.
Charles and led the school to its
first district basketball championship
and the regional finals in
the 1975-76 season. The Cardinals
rolled up a 20-3 record,
their best since 1943-44 when
they had an identical mark. He
was first-team All-Ohio in Class
AA his junior and senior years
and earned a scholarship to The
Ohio State University.
Although his basketball career
was hampered by injuries, he
went on to earn a degree in Social
& Behavioral Sciences. Miller
now serves at Chicago State
University as vice president of
institutional advancement and
is executive director, for the Chicago
State University Foundation.
He plans and directs all the
University’s external outreach
activities, including fund raising
and resource development,
alumni programs and public
relations among other responsibilities.
He reports to the chairman
of the Foundation Board
and serves as a member of the
president’s senior management
team.
Miller was formerly vice president
of external affairs for the
Chicago Urban League. As a
member of that group’s senior
management team, he was
responsible for planning and
directing all fund development
activities, including marketing
and public relations. He also
supervised the membership and
special events activities for the
group along with other organizational
responsibilities.
Prior to joining the Urban
League, Miller served as vice
president of the Corporate
Scholars Program for the United
Negro College Fund (UNCF),
and before that served as vice
president of field operations for

Patrick Kelley ’78, president of Falco,
Smith & Kelley, Ltd. Realtors, and
Skip Weiler, president of the Robert
Weiler Co., were honored by the Central
Ohio Division of the March of Dimes
at the 6th annual real estate awards
luncheon in October at the Blackwell
Inn. They were recognized for their
accomplishments in real estate and
for their service to the Columbus-area
community.
Kelley also is vice president of Donald
W. Kelley & Associates, Inc. a real estate
appraisal, consulting, and development
firm. Many of his current and past
community affiliations have been devoted
to boosting education in the Columbus
area.
He is the founder of the St. Catharine
School Partners in Education and serves
on the development board of Bishop
Hartley High School. He’s also on the
development board of Alvis House and
the board of St. Catharine Parish SPICE.
Kelley is a past president of the board of
the Salesian Boys & Girls Club.
Kelley is a member of the Columbus
Board of Realtors as well as the Columbus

Former alumni president
studying for diaconate
Marion Smithburger ’72 of Columbus is
studying to become a permanent deacon
in the Columbus Diocese. He began his
journey a year and a half ago and is more
than halfway to his goal after receiving
the Rite of Lector last December. He is
scheduled to receive the Rite of Acolyte
in November. His ordination as deacon
is tentatively scheduled for November-
December of 2008 and currently he’s
doing his internship at St. Peter and at
St. Timothy parishes.
He is on the board and is past president
of the St. Charles Alumni Association.
He’s executive director of the Columbus
Bar Foundation and director of the
lawyer referral service. Marion joined
the Columbus Bar Association (CBA) as
assistant executive director in 1978 and
with the CBF in 1985. He splits his time
with the two groups.
Smithberger has a number of
professional affiliations. He’s a trustee
for The Ohio Center for Law-Related
Education, past president of the Legal Aid
Society of Columbus, and currently serves
as chair of its development committee.
He is a consultant on the American Bar
Association’s peer assistance and review
team. Smithberger is past president of
the ABA’s National Conference of Bar
Foundations and is active with youth
education in his parish of St. Peter.
He and his wife, Carol Sheehan, have
been married 22 years. She is a partner
at the law firm of Carlile Patchen
and Murphy. The couple’s 21 year-old
daughter, Mandy, will be a senior at

Smith College.
“Our wives are critical to the formation
process,” Smithberger said. “While they
are not required to be involved, their full
and free consent is required. We could not
do the school work and ministry without
them (picking up additional work at
home).”
Deacon Frank Iannarino ’71, director
of the diocese’s Permanent Diaconate,
notes that the Catholic clergy has three
holy orders: deacon, priest, and bishop.
Once ordained deacon, Smithburger no
longer will be considered a layperson but
a member of the clergy. Unlike the orders
of priest and bishop, the diaconate is open
to married men.

Archbishop Lorenzo Casati ’71
Archbishop Casati came
long way to attend 30year
class reunion
Archbishop Lorenzo Casati made quite a
trip to attend his class’ 30-year reunion
last summer. Wanting to “see old friends,
people I’ve known almost all my life,” the
Archbishop of the Orthodox Church said
he extended his annual trip to the U.S. to
attend the event.
After graduating from St. Charles, he
went on to the University of Dayton and
earned a degree in theological studies
with minors in philosophy, history,
and languages (Italian, Spanish, and
English). He continued his studies at the
Athenaeum of Ohio, pursuing a master’s
of arts in biblical studies and in sacred
theology. After teaching a few years he
completed another year of Byzantine
theological studies.
Archbishop Casati was ordained to
the priesthood of the Orthodox Church
in 1983, pastored an old parish in the
Cleveland area, and later founded a
mission in southern Ohio. While visiting
relatives in Italy in late 1989, he was
asked to consider serving the Church
in Italy. He was granted necessary
permission of his bishop in the U.S., and
then moved to Italy in early 1990.
“In Italy,” he said, “I travel around
helping out in various parishes, spending
several months in Rome serving there
in the Russian Orthodox Church. I also
support myself doing demographic,
historical, and genealogical research
in old archives up and down the length
of Italy. This gave me many wonderful
opportunities to know the country, hone
my language skills, meet people and
publish the results of my research,” he
said.
Archbishop Casati said that in those
early and subsequent years, he also spent
a lot of time in England and Ireland and
traveled elsewhere in Europe.
After founding a mission in Palermo,
Sicily, he was consecrated bishop in 1996
and is now Archbishop of Palermo and
All-Italy for the Ukrainian Autocephalous
Orthodox Church. “The title may be
impressive, but the responsibilities
are many and our financial resources
are extremely limited,” he explained.
“We have many faithful -- Italians,
Romanians, Serbs, Ukrainians and
others, but very few structures and not
enough clergy!
“As all my priests and their wives
have secular jobs, I, too, support myself,
working as a certified English teacher,
teaching the language at a local high
school and part-time at the University of
Palermo. I also care for a small diocese in
the U.S. which has four mission parishes,”
he said.
The Archbishop credits the academic
preparation he received at St. Charles
in providing him an excellent basis for
his subsequent studies and for living in
Europe, whose cultural and historical
milieu he says require “a level of cultural
appreciation not generally available in
most American schools.”
“Their acute interest in our education
and the knowledge that they imparted
defy comparison. Monsignor Bennett is
especially to be thanked for helping us to
acquire knowledge on our own by teaching
us proper research and study methods.
I have often said to family and friends
that, after my four years at St. Charles,
university and graduate school came
easy.”
The Archbishop has two brothers
who attended St. Charles: One brother,
Mark J. ’73 , lives in Connecticut and
another brother Christopher G. attended
St. Charles from 1971-1973 but had to
complete high school in Findlay as the
Casati parents moved there at the end of
his sophomore year.

Richard C. Notebaert ’65 was elected
in February
to a three-year term as chair of the
University of Notre Dame’s board of
trustees. His term begins in July. He’s
only the sixth board chairman in Notre
Dame’s history.
Notebaert has been a Notre Dame
trustee for the past 10 years. He has
served as chair of ND’s university
relations and public affairs and
communication committee. He also
is a Fellow of the University, a role in
which he will continue.
Notebaert has led Qwest, a leader
in broadband, data, voice and image
communications, since 2002. Before
joining that company, he served as
chief executive officer of Tellabs Inc.
and as chairman and chief executive
officer of Ameritech Communications.
A graduate of the University of
Wisconsin, Notebaert is a member of
the board of directors of Aon Corp.,
Cardinal Health Inc., the Denver
Center for the Performing Arts and the
Denver Art Museum. His professional
activities include memberships in the
Business Council and the International
Advisory Council of the Executives
Club of Chicago. He’s on the National
Security Telecommunications Advisory
Committee, a position that he was
appointed to by President Bush four
years ago.
In 2001 Notebaert received the
school’s highest recognition, Borromean
Medal for Distinguished Achievement,
and established the Richard C.
Notebaert Family Scholarship Fund.
Notebaert and his wife, Peggy, have
two children, Michelle and Nicole, and
five grandchildren.

’62 grad Pat O’Reilly in
24th year with Newsies;
starts presidency
Pat O’Reilly is in his 24th year with the
Charity Newsies. A 1962 St. Charles
graduate, O’Reilly has risen through the
ranks since he started working with the
charitable group and this year served as
chairman of its all-important fund-raising
newspaper sales drive.
O’Reilly will become Newsies president
in June and board chairman next year.
Many other St. Charles men have
helped needy members of the Central
Ohio community through their work
with Charity Newsies. They include the
late George Rieser (Class of 1946), John
Mullin (Class of 1954), and Bart Mahoney
(former golf coach at St. Charles). All are
past presidents of the organization. Many
other St. Charles men have been and continue
to be Charity Newsies volunteers.
The Newsies are in their 100th year of
service. O’Reilly said the Newsies mission
has always been to make certain that no
child is kept from attending school for
lack of proper clothing. The group provides
needy children appropriate clothing
from underwear to winter coats, shoes,
and if required, vouchers for school uniforms.
O’Reilly proudly noted that a hallmark
of the Newsies is that each child who
receives clothes from the group is visited
by Newsies representatives in his or her
home to validate needs. “But more importantly,”
he said, the visits “offer a positive
message of encouragement for the child
to remain in school and to develop their
full potential.” Newsies last year clothed
13,360 needy school children of whom
almost 600 were from the Columbus Diocese
including 15 at St. Charles.
A Columbus native and graduate of the
Ohio State University, O’Reilly and his
wife, Diana, have two children and six
grandchildren. His son, Dennis, is a 1985
St. Charles graduate and is following in
his father’s footsteps. He’s a Newsie and
serves as corner captain at Main and
Cleveland Avenue in Westerville. It’s a
corner where he and some of his friends
from St. Francis DeSales High School
started working more than 10 years ago.
O’Reilly, who carried newspapers from
grade school until his senior year at St.
Charles, helped establish in his second
year with the Newsies a new site for the
organization’s annual paper sale (Frantz
Road and Route 161). Over time he became
involved in various committees. He
served as Newsies treasurer from 1996-
2002 and in 2005 was elected second vicepresident.

him to assistant drive chairman and a
four-year commitment as an officer.
The Newsies have proudly stated for
100 years “100% for Charity.” That
means 100% of every dollar donated is
used only to purchase clothing for needy
school children. The administrative, management,
and fundraising expenses of the
Newsies are paid for by the annual dues
from each Newsie, membership fundraising
events, and investment earnings.
It is a volunteer run organization with
only three full-time employees. Thus, the
volunteer effort of some 700 Newsies is
necessary.
“Why do I volunteer?” O’Reilly asks. “I
think it began through the influence of
several of my St. Charles instructors and
mentors. Fr. Robert O’Brien and Coach
Jack Ryan instilled in me a desire to serve
others in ways (that) could best utilize
my God-given talents. They chose me to
go to youth in government programs and
encouraged me to accept leadership in
volunteer youth organizations. I have just
kept doing those things all my life. My life
has been blessed and I hope to continue
serving God by serving others.”
In addition to his deep involvement
with the Newsies, O’Reilly has been active
in a variety of other community organizations.
He served many years as treasurer
for the Committee for Children for Franklin
County’s Children Services. He was
a candidate for Franklin County auditor
and currently is on the board of Nazareth
Towers.
A Certified Public Accountant, O’Reilly
is vice president of MedComm Billing
Consultants, LTD. He was the treasurer
of the Pontifical College Josephinum for
eight years and formerly was a partner in
the international CPA firm of Deloitte &
Touche.
O’Reilly is a former Ohio State University
lecturer. He’s a former chairman
of the Accountancy Board of Ohio and
served as vice president of the Ohio Society
of CPAs and president of its Columbus
Chapter. He also served as president of
the Central Ohio Chapter of the Association
of Government Accountants and as
president of the Ohio College and University
Business Officers Association.

compliments after seeing the
results of this year’s Division I
state high school swim meet in
which St. Charles won the Ohio
runner-up title to champion Cincinnati
St. Xavier High School.
From 1964-67, King was the
athletics director at “St. X,” an
all-male Jesuit high school in
Cincinnati. “The natatorium at
St. X sure made a difference in
the St. X program,” he noted.
“Just like the natatorium has
done for St. Charles. Just some
trivia! Makes me proud to have
an association with both great
schools!!!”
Despite his past involvement
with ST. X, King said he’s a
die-hard Cardinal fan. “It’s now
Columbus St. Charles’ turn!!
Go Cardinals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” He
noted that more importantly, St.
Charles finished ahead of Upper
Arlington, a school steeped in a
long history of swimming dominance.
“Super! Just Super!!!”
King has another reason for
being proud of Cardinal’s swimming
program: he was on the
St. Charles swimming team for
two years (1949-1951). “We
practiced every night at Ohio
State’s recreation pool (and our
meets were held there); none

of us had cars, so we took city
buses to OSU and home.”
He noted the similarity of St.
Charles and St. Xavier with
their single-sex enrollment, (although
St. X. is much larger with
1,500 young men vs. 575 for St.
Charles), and a great emphasis
on education. King also pointed
out that St. X had a bit of a head
start, having been founded 167
years ago, making it nearly
twice as old at St. Charles.
King graduated from St. Charles
in 1952 along with his brother,
Paul “Buddy” King. From 1952-
1954 he attended The Ohio
State University before becoming
a member of the U.S. Army
Medical Corps in Fort Lewis,
Washington.
In 1956 he married Margaret
(Burke) and began classes at
California State Polytechnic
College (Cal Poly) in San Luis
Obispo, Calif. where he played
football and basketball. In 1959
he earned a B.S. in education
from The Ohio State University,
majoring in health, phys ed and
recreation with minors in history
and biology. King earned a
master’s in education from Xavier
(OH) University, taught biology
and history at Gibsonburg
High School in Gibsonsburg,
Ohio, and also served there as
an assistant football and basketball
coach. From 1960-1963
he taught history and American
government and served
as an assistant football coach
and head basketball coach in
Cincinnati at Finneytown High
School, a small co-educational
public school.
As basketball coach he crossed
paths with the head basketball
coach at St. Xavier High and
the two became good friends.
When openings for athletic director
and a biology teacher
arose, King was interviewed
and was hired. He remained at
St. Xavier for three years as its
AD until 1967 when he entered
the insurance business, from
which he retired in 2005.

Following his graduation from
St. Charles, William J. Geiszler
Sr. joined the U. S. Air Force and
served in WWII in New Guinea
and the Philippine Islands with
the 100th Bomb Squadron,
42nd Bomb Group. He declares
he is a graduate of the “University
of Hard Knocks!” Geiszler
retired after 25 years with National
Plumbing Stores/Integrity
Supply where he was a district
manager in Ohio.
“Msgr. Wolz (George T.) ingrained
with me the fact that no
matter what course of education
or new project… that if you concentrate
on the basics and foundation,
success will be easier to
achieve,” he recalled.
His freshman class had only
69 students who were divided
into two homerooms. In those
days, students remained in their
“homeroom” throughout the
day, and it was the faculty who
traveled through the halls to
their teaching classrooms. As
sophomores the class dwindled
to 46 and as juniors 36 students
remained. There were 32 left
when the class graduated in
1940.
“This period was part of the
‘Great Depression,’” Geiszler
said. “I remember that one of
the priests told us that it was
not necessary to wear the latest
fashions, but that soap was
inexpensive. The only president
we ever knew was Franklin D.
Roosevelt. We were indoctrinated
with slogans such as ‘happy
days are here again,’ and many
government programs.” He recalled
the New Deal, Bankers
Holiday, the repeal of Prohibition,
initiation of Social Security,
the Civilian Conservation Corps
(CCC), and the Works Project
Administration (WPA).
During those years, Geiszler
said there were (conservatively)
30 bikes parked in the North
Courtyard (now the location of
the Robert C. Walter Student
Commons and the Student Services
& Fine Arts Center). Many
students had paper routes. At
this time, the Columbus Dispatch
was advertised as “The
Big One Cent Dispatch.” (The
daily price rose to three cents
sometime after World War II.)

in the courtyard when no one
was watching. “In our first year,
the seniors were going to ‘initiate’
the freshmen, but they soon

found out that they were far
outnumbered and beat a hasty
retreat into the school. So we
were finally accepted,” he said.
“As juniors we were introduced
to Greek as taught by Msgr.
Wolz. He called our class the
“Class of Giants.” At that time
we did not realize that we would
be part of the “Greatest generation”
surviving the Depression
and World War II, He also told
us that at the start of World War
II we thought Germany was our
enemy, but that we’d find out
that Communist Russia was in
fact our greatest enemy.”
Geiszler said that one phrase
from Shakespeare helped him
as time went by…”To thine own
self be true and it must follow as
the night that day that thou can
not be false to any man.”
Geiszler and his wife, Rose
Mary, were married 57 years
before her death in 1999. One
of their children, William J. Jr. is
a 1961 graduate of St. Charles.
Bill Sr. now boasts having 12
great-grandchildren.
1940 grad Turel
recalls his WWII
experience in
Europe
Stanley M. Turel following high
school, attended and graduated
from the Cincinnati College
of Mortuary Science. His apprenticeship
was interrupted in
February of 1942 when he was
drafted into the U.S. military. After
training in Ft. Thomas, Kentucky,
he left for England in May
and was assigned to the 8th Air
Force as a medical airman.
He participated in battles and
campaigns throughout Europe,
including Normandy, Northern
France, and the Rhineland. He
earned, among his many decorations
and citations, six bronze
stars and the Distinguished Unit
Citation.
Returning to the U.S. in 1947,
Turel resumed work in the mortuary
field. In 1957, he and his
wife purchased a second-generation
funeral home in Toronto,
Ohio and operated it under the
name Turel Funeral Home until
his retirement in 1990.

Turel lives in Steubenville and
celebrates 60 years of marriage
with is wife, Mary, on June 9!
They have two daughters and
two grandchildren, including current
St. Charles freshman Brian
O’Neil. Turel’s brother, John,
was a 1932 graduate of St.
Charles College and ordained to
the priesthood in 1936. Turel’s
grandson, Brian O’Neil, recently
completed his freshman year at
St. Charles.
Murnane helped
train B-29 crews in
World War II
After graduating from St.
Charles, Dave W. Murnane
developed an interest in department
store retailing, but that
was cut short by Pearl Harbor
in 1941. He served three and a
half years in the Army Air Corps
in a training command which
prepared crews who flew the
famous B-29 bombers, which
were a big part of the war effort
in Europe and was used to drop
the atomic bomb on Japan to
end World War II.
He and his wife, Teresa (nee
Wetzel) were married in June of
1945 by his former teacher, St.
Charles faculty member Msgr
Joseph Casey. His former classmate,
then seminarian (and later,
Bishop) George Fulcher ’40
was his “best man.” After the
war Murnane returned to department
store retailing and held
various executive positions. He
worked in Columbus, Canton,
Detroit, and finally, Philadelphia,
where he retired.
He and his wife have raised
eight children who in turn raised
48 great grandchildren, who
are now raising 14 great-great
grandchildren.
His brother, Tim ’41, and cousin,
Bob Meyers ’40, attended
St. Charles, as have two of his
grandsons: Joey ’92 and Ben
Jones ’97. His wife died in 2004.
He has two grandsons living
with him who are engineering
students at Drexel University in
Philadelphia. Murnane credits
them with keeping him young.
He noted that he was a big fan of
classical music. “I got the spark
from Monsignor Cousins and
his Stagecrafters, and has been
important to me all my life.”
“My parents were instrumental
in giving me a firm foundation
in my faith. St. Charles was very
important in my further development
of that faith. In those days
the whole faculty were priests
and they were good holy men
who gave us a good example.
May they all rest in peace.

Foose among oldest
alumni
Bernard “Bernie” Foose writes
from Depew, New York that he
hails from Bridgeport, Ohio and
is one of the oldest living alumnus
of St. Charles. As of this
writing, Leo J. Lukasko, Class
of 1930 is still with us as is Monsignor
Edward F. Spiers, Class
of 1931.
Foose met his wife during military
service and they were married
for 41 years. She passed
away 20 years ago. He counts
126 immediate family members,
including grandchildren, spous-
es, great grandchildren, and
great-great grandchildren.
He remains active in his parish
as an extraordinary Eucharistic
minister, works bingo and
an occasional funeral Mass. It
should be noted that Mr. Foose
was kind enough to forward the
school a personal check to the
St. Charles Scholarship Fund.
In his letter to the Development
& Alumni Office, he recounted
his initiation into the Scorpion
Club which was exclusive to St.
Charles boarders.
As Bernie tells it, the initiation
included the “cutting of hair on
one’s head and the smearing of
limburger cheese on the head
of the initiated...then it was off
to chapel for evening prayers.
Msgr. Joseph A.Weigand, (the
school’s first rector), was waiting
for us with such a grin -- like
the cat who ate the canary.” Mr.
Foose wonders if there are any

Distinguished presentation
Father W. Jared Wicks ’47, SJ, was guest speaker in February
for the Catholic Records Society’s winter quarterly meeting at
Westminster Thurber Community in Columbus. His presentation
was entitled: “Professor Ratzinger at Vatican II: A Chapter in the
Life of Pope Benedict XVI.” Among those attending were: back row

Dearly loved
Monsignor Thomas M. Bennett was presented a specially-framed
varsity “C” letter in front of the school’s entire student body,
faculty, and staff in celebration of his Golden Jubilee. Monsignor’s
only request was for principal Dominic J. Cavello ’64 (left) to grant
the boys of St. Charles the following day off. That date, May 25,
marked the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood in
1957.
Msgr. Bennett honored at Red
Mass with Thomas More award
Monsignor Thomas Bennett, in his 44th year
as a St. Charles faculty member, was presented
the Thomas More Award during the liturgy of
the Red Mass May 1 at St. Joseph Cathedral.
The recognition was to honor and thank him
for his years of “exemplary efforts” in helping to
promote the annual Mass for the legal community,
according to the St. Thomas More Society’s
president, Alphonse Cincione.
Monsignor was also recognized in honor of his 50
year Jubilee as a priest. He was ordained on May
24, 1957.
Cincione said that although Monsignor Bennett
has no official affiliation with the legal community
or the Society, he has been an “unsung hero… for
promoting attendance (particularly among St.
Charles students) with great results.”
Marion Smithberger, a 1972 graduate
and executive director of the Columbus Bar
Foundation, was in attendance and said that the
St. Charles seniors in attendance with Monsignor
led a resounding standing ovation. “Monsignor
Bennett had no idea, nor did the students, that
he was going to receive this award. It was a total
surprise,” he said.

championship game in Glendale, Arizona in January when Ohio
State was upset by Florida. The trip for Tony was not a total loss as
Uncle Bill treated him to several rounds of golf and Tony had his
first hole-in-one. Trace was a standout on the state-ranked Cardinal
golf team last year. He had the team’s low score in the final round
of the 2006 state tournament on OSU’s Scarlet course.

Paul G. Heller,
Class of 1982, has
been elected to

He’s a senior vice
president leading
the Corporate
Internet Group at
JPMorgan Chase,
a position he’s held
Paul G. Heller ’82 since October, 2005.
He’s responsible for
strategy, development, and operations of
JPMorgan’s internet products and sites.
He has been with that company or its
predecessor banks for 11 years. Previously
he served as chief technology officer and
operations manager in the consumer
banking division. Before joining JPMC,
Heller was a senior manager at Andersen
Consulting in Columbus. During his
eight years with Andersen he worked
in New York, Phoenix, and London,
England.
Heller earned a degree in business from
Miami (OH) University in 1986 and an
MBA from The Ohio State University two
years later. He and his wife, Renee, have
two children and reside in Dublin.

11 more honored for “ultimate sacrifice”
A new bronze plaque was cast and fitted into the stone
at the head of the Memorial Grove at St. Charles. The
updated plaque bears 11 additional names of Aquinas
graduates not recognized on the original plate. Two
anonymous Aquinas donors paid for the new plate.
New memorial plaque
honors 11 more who died
in service
A new bronze plaque adorns the three-ton
granite boulder that’s a key segment of
the campus memorial honoring graduates
and former students of St. Charles
Preparatory School and the former
Aquinas College High School who died in
service to America from World War I to
the present.
Engraved on the new plaque are 51
names – 16 from St. Charles and 35 from
Aquinas. It includes one St. Charles
graduate who died in the 9/11 terrorist
attack nearly six years ago in New York
City. Newly engraved on the new plaque
are the names of 11 Aquinas alumni who
had been overlooked earlier in school
records.
Aquinas graduates recognized on the
new plaque and their classes are: Robert
F. Finneran ’38; Edmund A. Flynn ’31;
Charles W. Haas ’20; John T. Hayden ’32;
Carl W. Lortz ’41; John D. McCormack
’26; William J. Nagle ’38; John J.
O’Callaghan ’41; Arthur J. Piper ’35;
Patrick Timlin ’38; and Richard L. Vance
’32.
The search for the missing names was
sparked by Father McAlister, O.P., a
1952 graduate of Aquinas and assigned
at Providence College. In late 2005 he
discovered the names of other graduates
who seemed to have been missed in the
original search. Father McAlister passed
on his information to Richard Schneider,
a ’57 Aquinas graduate and vice president
of the Aquinas College High School
Alumni Association.
Schneider, who’s the father of two St.
Charles graduates (Andrew A. ’82 and
Daniel R. ’85), went to work to verify
the information. He painstakingly
researched each person and was able to
validate the 11 additional names who are
memorialized. Two anonymous Aquinas
volunteer graduates paid for the recasting
and plaque remounting.
The research information obtained by
Schneider for each of the 51 honored in
the memorial is kept at St. Charles in
the Archive Suite located on the school’s
fourth floor. The information includes
each man’s branch of service, rank, date
killed, and location of burial or name
listing if lost at sea or missing in action.
To honor St. Charles and Aquinas
sons who died in service to America, St.
Charles established and dedicated on May
22, 2003 the present “Memorial Grove.”
It features 40 crabapple trees, one for
each of the originally known deceased
when the memorial was dedicated. It’s
prominently situated on the Broad Street
side of the St. Charles campus between
the west wing of the school building and
the campus theatre. Unfortunately space
limitations prevent planting more trees.
This memorial is the third established
by St. Charles. The first was created in
1947 and was replaced in1994. That one
was displaced by renovation work in 2002.
Changing landscape:
What are your memories?
The St. Charles campus lost a long-time
neighbor in February when fire destroyed
the building that was the home of the
Old Bag of Nails Restaurant, which was
previously known for many decades as
the “Broad-Nel.” This eatery, just across
Alum Creek from the school, had been a
favorite gathering place for people of the
St. Charles community for many decades.
From its special vantage point just off
the corner of Broad Street and Nelson
Road, the restaurant had a good view of
many changes that took place in the local
neighborhood during the years. Searches
for the restaurant’s opening date were
unsuccessful, although from one account,
the building was constructed in 1924. If
that were the case, it would have seen the
construction of St. Charles which began
in July of 1924 and ended in the fall of
1925.
The Broad-Nel would have also seen the
construction of the N&W railway’s train
viaduct which was built over Broad Street
in the 1930s. Monsignor Edward Spiers
’31, who was a College graduate and
member of the faculty from 1935-1955,
noted in a past interview that the old
railway crossing at Broad Street “was a
favorite excuse for tardiness” by students
who claimed to have been delayed by
passing trains. The viaduct ended those
excuses.

Good-bye old friend
The building that once housed the Broad-Nel Restaurant
was destroyed by fire in February. The building’s
owner who operates the Old Bag-Of- Nails Pub, said the
old Broad-Nel had been the longest-running restaurant
building in Columbus. Fire department officials said
it appears someone started the fire, but it’s unknown
whether it was intentionally set to do damage or for
someone to keep warm and the fire got out of control.

The restaurant saw St. Charles expand
from its original two (school building and
power house) buildings to the current
configuration. It looked on as the Rosati’s
Market building complex, which flourished
for many decades and then stood
empty for some years, was bulldozed and
turned into an empty lot. It oversaw the
rebuilding of the Broad Street bridge over
Alum Creek.
Before being torn down, the restaurant’s
remains stood for two weeks, while, just a
stone’s throw away, workers began tearing
down the old Clifton Avenue bridge
south of St. Charles in preparation for the
construction of a larger and better connector.
Buildings hold special memories for all
of us -- from our childhood years to the
schools we attended, and to the homes in
which we raised our own families. And
while buildings, like our bodies, eventually
wear out over many decades, memories
remain of so many happy, special events,
experiences, and moments.

Broad-Nel following a play, a ballgame, or

friends there following a campus athletic

the Clifton Ave. Bridge at the end of
long training run or following grueling
football practices at the nearby park?

years of teaching service
Sister Margaret Hoffman, OSF, was
presented the Romana Hemmelgarn
Award by the Columbus Diocese’s Office
of Catholic Schools at its annual teacher
service recognition luncheon in May.
The award honors an educator who
best demonstrates the qualities of care,
concern, dedication, and encouragement
of students’ dreams and potential.
Sr. Margaret has eight brothers and
sisters, five of whom are involved in
education. John ’64 and Ed ’68 are both
teachers in parish religious education
programs. Ed taught and coached at St.
Charles from 1971-1979.
Sr. Margaret, a member of the Sisters
of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate, made
her vows in 1963. She has taught English
at St. Charles for the last 16 years. Before
that she taught at several other schools,
including Bishop Watterson High School
(15 years), St. Francis Academy in Joliet,
Illinois (2 years), and St. Thomas Aquinas
High School in Louisville, Ohio (8 years).
Ann Cobler, who
joined the St.
Charles faculty
in 1977, was also
recognized at the
event. She was
honored for her 30
years of teaching
service by the
Columbus Diocese’s
Ann Cobler
Office of Catholic
Schools.
She and fellow faculty member Doug
Montgomery were honored with The
Principal’s Award for Leadership and
Service to St. Charles in 2004.
When Cobler started at St. Charles
she was the only woman on the faculty,
and has since served as the moderator
for the Carolian student newspaper, the
Ski Club, and the “In The Know team.”
Among other activities in which she is
involved includes tutoring and co-chairing
the SC Prom committee.

Mrs. Brosmer was Mothers
Club president
Ellen Brosmer, the mother of Father
Thomas J., Class of 1961 and a member
of the St. Charles Advisory Board, died
December 16, 2006 at the age of 91.
Mrs. Brosmer was a past president of
the St. Charles Mothers Club. She was
a Catholic school teacher for many years
and was the first lay principal of St.
Catharine School in Bexley. She was also
coordinator of women’s retreats at St.
Therese’s Shrine.
’49 grad Eberts helped
win metallic paint patents
Robert E. “Bob” Eberts was one of several
standout students in the St. Charles Class
of 1949, which had 49 graduates. He
had a distinguished career as a chemist
in which he helped win for his company
a half dozen or so patents developing
metallic paints that became the rage some
years ago in the automotive field. He
also was involved in developing women’s
cosmetics. He died February 5, 2007 at
the age of 75.
Among his standout subjects at St.
Charles was algebra, which for many
students seemed like a dragon blocking
passage to the next level. At least one
student, and probably more, made it
through thanks to Bob’s patient help
in solving certain algebraic problems
assigned for homework.
Bob excelled in other subjects, too. On
one occasion he and a classmate turned
in perfect papers during a major test in
ancient history. But Jack Ryan, who had
recently returned to the classroom and
coaching after World War II duty in the
U.S. Coast Guard, posted a 99% grade
for them. Relying on his Irish logic, Ryan
explained to the class that he was certain
that he could have asked a question that
the two students couldn’t answer, but he
didn’t for that particular test. Therefore,
he reasoned, 99% was just.
A graduate of the University of Dayton,
Bob won a fellowship to Iowa State
University where he earned a master’s
degree and a Ph.D. in chemistry. His
professional career included 25 years
with the Mearl Corporation and 52 years
as a member of the American Chemical
Society. Most of his working career was
spent in Massachusetts and New York

State. He had retired to Cincinnati.
Among his survivors are his wife,
Louise, five children, seven grandchildren,
a sister, and a brother, John L., Class
of 1951. Mass of Christian burial was
celebrated at St. Timothy Church in
Columbus.

years after his
ordination in St. Joseph Cathedral in
1954. He died on Good Friday, April 6.
He was 78.
Fr. Miller began his priestly career as
associate pastor of St. Ladislas Parish and
went to Dennison Immaculate Conception
Parish in 1958 as associate pastor. His
later pastoral assignments were at
Dresden St. Ann, Dennison Immaculate
Conception, LaRue St. Joseph, and
Portsmouth Holy Redeemer. He served
as administrator at Otway Our Lady of
Lourdes, Mattingly Settlement and Wills
Creek. He also served as chaplain at St.
Ann’s Hospital and associate pastor at St.
Paul in Westerville.
Other assignments included teaching
at Portsmouth Notre Dame High School,
assistant principal at Columbus Wehrle
High, vocations director for the Northern
Deanery and assistant vocations director
for the diocese. He retired in 1998.
Funeral Mass for Father Miller was at
St. Paul Church in Westerville and burial
was at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Msgr. Yontz, College grad,
served parish 42 years
Monsignor William C. Yontz, who earned
his undergraduate degree from St.
Charles College-Seminary in Columbus,
served for 42 years as pastor of Holy
Trinity Church in Byesville, a small
town a few miles from Cambridge. A
parish assignment of that length is most

uncommon, but Msgr. Yontz apparently
was content to stay, even beyond his
normal retirement age of 70.
He died December 6 at Southeastern
Ohio Regional Medical Center in
Cambridge the day after he became ill
after celebrating morning Mass at his
parish church. He was 82.
Msgr. Yontz completed his priestly
studies in 1950 at Mt. St. Mary Seminary
in Norwood and was ordained in May
of that year. He served a variety of
assignments before he was appointed in
1964 as pastor of Holy Trinity Among his
survivors is a younger brother, Monsignor
George Yontz of Steubenville.

Msgr. Kessler died February 7 at
Hocking Valley Community Hospital in
Logan, Ohio, the city where he was born
91 years ago.
Known by many as “Father Ed,” Msgr.
Kessler had what is commonly called a
“delayed vocation.” In a letter saved by
his cousin, Father Jeff Rimelspach, pastor
of St. Joan of Arc Parish, Kessler in 1967
wrote to his parents that “…it was not
until I was 25 and had been out of school
for seven years that the nudging and
promptings of the Holy Spirit forced me
to take action” (to pursue a vocation in
the priesthood). In that same letter, he
noted that the first thoughts of becoming
a priest came to him while in Catholic
grade school.
Msgr. Kessler began his priestly career
in 1948 as an assistant pastor at St.
Francis Parish in Columbus, moved on in
1951 to serve as an assistant at Sacred
Heart in New Philadelphia, and then as
an assistant at St. Peter in Chillicothe in
1954. He was named pastor at St. Ann in
Dresden in 1956 and served for 21 years
starting in 1964 as pastor of St. Joseph
Parish in Sugar Grove where he retired in
1985.

John T. Cummins, known by legendary
St. Charles football coach Jack Ryan as
“his hardest hitter ever,” has died at the
age of 77. Cummins, Class of 1947, was
an officer
in U.S. Army and served in the Korean
War. He retired from Becton, Dickinson
and Company in Maryland and also
worked for Borden in Columbus, Ohio and
Johnson & Johnson. Cummins, a member
of St. Brendan Church in Hilliard, is
survived by his wife of 56 years, Marjorie;
children, John P. (Diana) of Chicago,
Ill., James H. (Nicole) of Atlanta, Ga.,
Jared J. (Susan) of Hilliard, Jeffrey T.
(Loren) of New Freedom, Pa., Susan M.
(Howard) Hamilton of Stewartstown, Pa.,

Development &
Alumni Office at
St. Charles. Our
little staff of three
– myself, Louis

Taynor – occupies
the former living
quarters and work

Penance & Christian Charity, who served
the St. Charles faculty, college students
and seminarians, and prep school
students from 1925 to 1976.
When I was a student here in the mid-
1970s, this area that we now call the
Development Office was totally off limits
to students. During my sophomore year,
the sisters were called back with little
fanfare to their Motherhouse in Stella
Niagara, New York. What remains are
the sisters’ residence rooms, a kitchenette,
a small bathroom (that we renovated a
couple years ago), and the “Nuns’ Chapel”
on the third level directly above our suite
of offices and across the hall from Holy
Angels Library.
I recall these sisters because of their
legacy of service to mankind and St.
Charles that begs to be emulated.
The sisters’ order mandated them
to “Christian Charity.” While those
two words together are easily enough
pronounced, putting those words into
action is another story altogether. Many
wonderful people – over a thousand in fact
– found a way to do something charitable
for St. Charles throughout this past year.
We who occupy what I regard as hallowed
ground devote part of every day to work
just a little harder for St. Charles because
it might be pleasing to those who occupied
this space before us.
As the curtain falls on the current
academic calendar, I want you to know
how good it makes everyone at SC feel
that we have a network of supporters
whose constant love and care for St.
Charles is a cut above the rest. No one
here will ever tire of SC moms and dads
who drop what they do at home (and
sometimes the corporate office!) to be here
at 2010 to serve a hot meal, clean up the
steam table, and wipe down the tables in
the Commons.
The Distinctive Leader in Catholic Education
For six weeks this past spring there
also were many SC dads whose schedules
were flexible enough that they helped
us build a remarkable new athletic field.
And that work will continue well into the
summer months. You know who you are
and SC salutes you. To the hundreds of
alumni who opened their checkbooks so
St. Charles kids who need some tuition
money could reach that bar – “thank you.”
You know who you are. We need to be
grateful that the job not only was done,
but was done The Saint Charles Way.

Walter H. Plank ’41
Plank Field” in
honor of the late
great Walt Plank, a member of the Class
of 1941 and one of Columbus’s truly great
sportsmen.
“The St. Charles community is excited
about the new opportunities this field will
create here for the students, both present
and future; we expect all will aspire to
Walt’s sportsmanship and love of the
game,” Cavello said.
“We hope our students will gain fresh
appreciation of Walt’s care and concern
for his fellow man, and for his love of
alma mater,” Cavello said. “Walt paid
forward countless times and that is
why St. Charles is proud to promote
his wonderful legacy. His story is one of
which all of us can be proud,” he said.
As this magazine went to press,
installation of the new field and the two
new dugouts and storage units were
complete, and fencing was being installed.
Later this summer, construction on
the new stadium entryway will begin.
A ribbon cutting ceremony for the new
athletic field will take place later in the
year and alumni, parents and friends will
be invited.
Sports star
Walter Plank ’41 was an outstanding athlete who
captained both the basketball and baseball team his
senior year. His senior year Plank played shortstop and
led the Cardinals that year with a blistering .480 batting
average.
New athletic field takes shape
Several St. Charles advocates generously
provided the planning and labor for
the new athletic field and stadium
improvements. Early in the planning
stages, Dominic Cavello and Jim
Lower called upon Hank Sherowski
for help, father of 1991 S.C. graduate
Steve Sherowski. For Hank this was
his second field installation project at St.
Charles; he also was heavily involved in
construction of the first multi-sport field
in 1994.
Site preparation of Walt Plank Field
was performed by Team Savko, formally
known as Nick Savko & Sons, led by
brothers Steve and Marty Savko. The
Savko work crew of bulldozers, backhoes,
graders, and steamrollers was supervised
by 1979 St. Charles alumnus Ralph
Polletta, who spent many hours working
on St. Charles expansion projects as a
student and as an employee of his father
when the school’s original Walk of Honor
was installed in the early 1990s. Also
giving a major assist to the project was
Savko veteran planner, Ed Carlson,
who worked on planning and zoning
documents.

Parents Fund hits $1.1 million in
gifts & pledges for field
Parents on our 2006-07 Parents Fund
Committee secured necessary funding
-- $1.1 million to date -- in gifts and
pledges for Walt Plank Field. Committee
members reached out to more than
250 contributors -- mostly St. Charles
parents -- and achieved their goal in three
months.
A special recognition goes to our Turf
Field campaign: Tom O’Leary ’64
chairman; co-chairs: David and Laura
Butler; Doug and Beth Byorth;
Robert Griffith and Pat McJoynt-
Griffith; Ed and Sarah Kistner; Mark
and Laurie Palmer; and Kevin and
Marie Quinn.
According to dean of students Jim
Lower, “Each and every student at St.
Charles will benefit from this new field.”
“The field will be used by every St.
Charles student as it will be used as a
playing surface for the school’s year-round
physical education program and our four
field sport teams,” Lower said.
“Walt Plank Field is a home field
advantage that every student, parent and
alumnus can be proud of,” he added.
Stadium entrance and plaza
named
The stadium’s new front entryway will be
named The Sean Reed Plaza to honor
the memory of 2002 St. Charles alumnus
Sean P. Reed. Sean’s parents, Paula Jo
(“P.J.”) and Gary Reed, are St. Charles
football program volunteers and remain
closely associated with the school. St.
Charles acknowledges their generous gift
to name the plaza. Sean was a member
of the football Cardinals during his four
years at St. Charles.
Alumni Annual Fund
Tom O’Leary Class of 1964 chaired the
successful Alumni Annual Fund and
Parents Annual Fund drives. Thanks to
the generous outpouring from our alumni,
parents of current students and parents of
alumni, both goals were met.
To date, our Alumni Fund goal of
$325,000 has reached over $525,000. A
total of $283,000 was designated to new
or existing scholarship endowments.
For the first time since its founding in
1988, the school’s annual Cardinal Walk
for Scholarships appeal was conducted
with alumni support. Members of the St.
Charles Student Council led this effort in
March and April and netted over $10,000
in additional support. Alumni receiving a
phone call received follow-up pledge cards
in the mail.
Next year our alumni and parents can
expect a re-designed St. Charles Giving
Page on the St. Charles Website. A very
special thank you goes to alumni Matt
Weger ’89 and Neal Roberts ’85 for
lending their expertise to update our
Website and this “GIVETOSC” charitablegiving
page.
S.C. Class endowment update
As part of the school’s very popular
Alumni Reunion program, three new
scholarship endowments have been
signed into “permanent residence” with
the St. Charles Endowment. The school
recognizes The Class of 1976 Endowment;
The Class of 1981 Endowment; and The
Class of 1986 Endowment.
Black Catholic ministries
scholarship
Black Catholic Ministries of Columbus
has initiated a renewable four-year
scholarship to an African-American
attending St. Charles. This scholarship
is open to both Catholic and non-Catholic
applicants who will be in the freshman
class entering in 2007.
A graduate of St. Charles who wishes
to remain anonymous is funding this
scholarship. The donor is committed
to the education of African-American
males. Guidelines for the scholarship
were developed by Mrs. Gabriella
Holland, the mother of a St. Charles
graduate, with input from the St.
Charles administration. Mrs. Holland is
a member of the executive board of the
BCMC.

Charitable gifts from your
retirement account
Attention St. Charles alumni age 70
½ and older: if you are planning your
charitable gifts for the remainder of
this calendar year and next year, you
need to be aware of a new law known
as the Pension Protection Act of 2006.
This new Act encourages financial
support of charitable organizations,
including institutions such as St. Charles
Preparatory School. Under the law, you
can make a gift to Saint Charles using
funds from your individual retirement
account (IRA) without undesirable tax
effects. (For detailed information on these
benefits, please consult your tax advisor.)
Previously, donors were required to
report any funds taken from an IRA as
taxable income. Afterward they would
take a charitable deduction for that
IRA-funded gift but the deductions were
limited to only 50% of their adjusted gross
income. In effect, this caused some donors
to pay more in income taxes than if they
didn’t make a gift at all. Fortunately,
now these IRA gifts can be accomplished
simply and without tax complications.
Please contact your tax advisor and see
if this new Act would be a tax-wise way
for you to continue your support of St.
Charles.

In Our Next Issue…
At the beginning of the The Campaign for
Saint Charles, our Development Office set
a 10-year goal for each graduating class
to have at least a 50% alumni-donor rate.
During the seven years of this campaign,
the rate of alumni charitable giving to
St. Charles has reached an all-time high.
When our campaign comes to a close next
June the school wants to come as close to
getting our classes pushed over the 50%
mark. In our fall issue of “the Cardinal”
we will publish a complete roster of all SC
alumni who have made gifts during their
lifetime. A corresponding percentage rate
also will be calculated. The graduating
class with the highest percentage of
donors will receive a complimentary “St.
Charles Cardinals” tee shirt – just like
the one many of us wore in gym class!

Catholic Foundation meeting dignitaries
The Robert C. Walter Student Commons was the setting
for the Catholic Foundation’s annual meeting at which
Bishop Thomas Rodi (second from right) of Biloxi,
Mississippi was the featured speaker. He described
the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina and the
strength of the Catholic community in coping with
the storm’s destruction. The Foundation donated the
proceeds of the event, $10,000, to helping parishes
and schools in Bishop Rodi’s Biloxi Diocese. Others

Turf Field Project

In early April, after leveling out the ground, a sheet of
drain felt and drainage pipes were put down across the
entire field. That was then covered in a layer of crushed
limestone.
In a view from the main building’s northeast roof, workers
are seen laying the very first strips of synthetic turf
for Walt Plank Field.
A lonely bulldozer scrapes off the top layer of grass
and dirt off the athletic field in preparation for laying a
drainage system and gravel in late March.
In early May workers near completion of the tin roof on
the baseball field’s visitors dugout. The green roofing
will match that of the main school building, Mother of
Mercy Chapel and other campus structures.
In a view from the stadium press box, the red base
path and green infield turfs intersect with the green
football field turf. A thin circular strip has been cut out
of the center of the field in which a yellow stripe will be
inserted for use in soccer and lacrosse games.
(photo left) Phase I of the Turf Field Project came to
a close with the insertion of the “SC” block letters
into the middle of the Sprinturf-installed field and the
spreading of infill (crambiant rubber made of recycled
tires) between the turf’s synthetic blades to provide
special cushioning. Phase II, the construction of a
limestone and brick entryway and the Sean Reed Plaza,
is set to begin in early summer and finish up before the
start of school.
(photo right) Just one day after the installation of Walt
Plank Field’s turf was completed, the new surface
got a stern test. As part of the school’s annual Circus
Day activities, the students used the field for games
of softball, baseball, lacrosse, and even for lounging
around in the warm sun.

The home dugout and the baseball field’s brick wall
fence posts await completion. Meanwhile, pieces of cut
limestone await the summer months when they will become
part of The Sean Reed Plaza, the athletic stadium
complex’s new front entryway.

Summertime is most definitely here
for the young Cardinals of St. Charles!
They’ve spent the last four months in the
classroom daydreaming about running,
hitting, sliding, blocking, scoring goals,
hard tackles, shootouts, winning base
hits, fly patterns and storming the field
as Walt Plank Field took shape. Those
dreams of athletic prowess are a lot closer
to reality thanks to the S.C. leadership
team of Dominic J. Cavello ’64 and Jim
Lower who called in the “pros” to ensure
all of those glorious scenarios could unfold.

Upcoming Alumni Association Events
Homecoming
The St. Charles Alumni Association invites you to attend its
annual complimentary Homecoming Tailgate and post-game
Pizza Party, to be held on Friday, Sept. 14, 2007. Come and
see the beautiful new Walt Plank Field and cheer on the
Cardinals to a victory over Marion Harding!
The tailgate party starts at 6 p.m. with brats, hot dogs,
chips, and cold drinks being served alongside the theatre
building. After the game the Association is holding a Pizza
Party and serving the famous pizza from Plank’s Café in the
theatre building’s Cavello Center.

S.C. when a special project like this

The location and date of the 2007 Alumni Golf Outing
have not been established yet. If you’d like to play or have
