‘January,’ sang Pilot, right at
the butt end of the pre-punk
era. ‘Sick and tired, you’ve
been hanging on me.’ Everyone
knew what they meant:
three months of winter still to
go, before the daffodil-lit end
of the daylight-starved tunnel,
and only the chance of snow to
cheer everyone up.
But… hang on. It wasn’t, and
isn’t, all that bad. January is
also the time for resolutions,
for new starts, for planning a
better future. January is a time
when your self-help plans start
bearing fruit, if you haven’t
fallen off the good-intention
wagon already.
In Lewes January has become
the month of the Wellbeing
Fest, in which scores of stallholders
offer a taster of their
health-oriented wares. From
giving-up-smoking gurus to
Bowen therapists, from Alexander
technicians to health-food
cooks, these are the people who
can help you keep your newyear
plans on the straight and
narrow. With this in mind, as
we did last year, we’ve teamed
up with the WellBeing lot: their
2008 programme can be found
in the centre of this edition.
Other than that there is, as
ever, plenty to look forward to
this month, from a Mozart opera
to a French film weekend,
from Burns Night to the most
extraordinary set in the history
of Lewes Little Theatre. Enjoy
the issue, enjoy the month, enjoy
the New Year. Welcome to
2008.
