Glaswegian, thomas peacock optician and instrument maker emigrated to Auckland in 1862 and operated from shortland street until election to the City Council in 1878. He became Mayor and subsequently Mp for Auckland city north, newton and ponsonby until 1890. captain roland Christian Hammond was manager of the northern steam ship co from 1921, following capt. charles ransom. Height 215, some cracking and chipping evident. Note Hutson’s eldest son served in the South African campaign with New Zealand’s Second contingent. See page 13. $500 184 A large Japanese charger decorated with a pair of exotic birds perched on a cherry blossom bough and surrounded by brightly coloured chrysanthemums on a deep blue ground, framed by an egg yolk border with stylised peonies. Diameter 430. $250 185 A large Imari porcelain rouleau vase, the tapering cylindrical body with subtle fluting, the neck with a broad everted rim. Decorated in iron red, gilt and cobalt blue with two panels of flowering boughs, fan and quatrefoil motifs decorate the interstices on a background decorated with a profusion of flowering tendrils. The neck similarly decorated. With later wooden plinth. Height 820. See page 13. $650 186 A pair of Japanese Imari vases, ovoid shape with trumpet neck, scalloped rim and two handles at the shoulder. each decorated with panels framed by sinuous dragons and ho-ho birds depicting the emperor and empress beneath a maple tree. A profusion of florals in bright enamels decorate the remainder of the vase. Traditional iron red and cobalt blue stylised florals decorate the mouth and foot of the vases. One restored.
