Volleyball league season progresses
At the outset of the 1972per
game, eighth best in South
football season there were -Jersey. As a team the^ were
many question marks. Though considered the fifth best in •
Coach Mike Slaveski haa South Jersey by the Brooksalmost
all . of his lettermen Iryine Football Club; the first
returning the 1971' eleven c^puld tithe' a Red. Raider club has
manage only two wins against ' been so highly ranked in .the
seven losses. There, was also seven years of the rankjngs.
the problem .of depth.. There They set a record for'the most
wasn't any. But now,' after touchdown
-winning eight of nine games
and sweeping the Cape-Atlantic
League, they have proven
themselves, to be one. of the very
- best teams in the history of our
school.
The Raiders won the CAL
crown for the seventh time,
first time since 1967 and the
first time outright since 1957.
They won the Cape May County
title for the 24th time. The
Raiders scored 229 points,
fourth best at OCHS and fifth
this year in South.Jersey. They
allowed only an average of 7.3
7 passes in a single
game (4), more!than doubled
the old record for interceptions
in a'season (28), established a
new mark for passes picked off
in a game (6), most defensive
recoveries in a season (42) and
defensive recoveries in a game
(8). The Raiders also allowed
only 584 yards rushing, almost
400 yards less than the best'
recorded performance since
the mid-50's, and allowed only
31 first downs on the ground.
Of the 25 positions selected
for the All-Cape May County
team, 16 of them were filled by
r mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmtmm^
Hed Raiders. On the Cape-
Atlantic League all star team
there were six Raiders, though^
a few others might have been'
overlooked. 'Three Ocean City
football, players, were named •
All-tiroup Two with one of them
making the All-Sou'h Jersey
eleven from ' schools . of all
groups. .
That's a brief summary of the
accomplishments made by this
team. Before we begin to
describe the performance of the
brilliant individuals who
comprised this team it is
necessary that we make.one
statement. Every individual
accomplishment was a team
effort. The interceptions were
made possible by the strong
pass rush. The passing offense
was a combination of the
talented passing, receiving and
blocking. The rushing was
impressive, because of the
strong interior blocking. Scott
Halliday, John Kulesza, Bill
Keele, Tim Schellinger,
Charles Dalrymple, George
Savitsky, John Klock, John
Andrews, Harry Murrel and
Mew
Jim Ginn were responsible for
the exciting offense and stingy
defense because of the things
Public
they did that didn't earn them
headlines.
There were, however, many
Hours
others who earned numerous
headlines. In the rushing
The pass receivers were
paced by Frank Sannino who
word.
caught 17 passes this year for
361 yards and eight touchdowns.
His career record of 44'
receptions for 746 yards and 11
touchdowns is easily the
greatest in OCHS history.
Dalrymple, though less
spectacular, nevertheless
caught 17 passes himself for 262
yards and two TDs. Reed
scored twice and Minshull once
as pass receivers.
In scoring the Raiders were
paced by Sannino who added
one punt return and one kickoff
return to his eight pass
receptions. Add a two-point
conversion and Frank scored 62
points this, year, 80 in his
career. Baldini finished with 48,
Minshull had 30, Reed 26,
Andrews 21'and Dalrymple 14.
Wayne MacMurray set' two
marks this season and equalled
another. The senior placekicker
scored 13 points with his
foot, kicked 13-of-21 extra point
attempts and booted five in a
single game. For most of the
season, Sannino was his holder.
When MacMurray was injured
Andrews booted three-of-four
attempts while junior Tom,
Gargan made good his only
attempt.
On defense Baldini led the
team with 58 tackles, bringing
his career total to a record 143.
Klock (53), Savitsky (51),
Schelihager (39), John Andrews
(27), Tom Rodier (26), Murrel
(25), Sannino (25), Keele (24)
and Dalrymple (23) were
others who made more than
their share of tackles and
assists.
one shy of the school record.
Andrews finished his career
with eight, a new mark.
Savitsky picked off four with
Sannino and Bryant Rogers
getting three each. Schellinger
only had one but it was big one
since he returned the ball 55
yards for a touchdown. Tim led
the club in recovered fumbles
with three while Rodier, who
led in overall recoveries,
jumped on two fumbles.
That's a statistical summary
of the 1972 Raiders. But
statistics don't tell the complete
story. In last week's SPORTS
CORNER we echoed Coach
Slaveski's comments about the
club's character. They had
plenty of that! They also had
excitement, provided most
often by Sannino and Andrews.
Frank impressed all Raider
fans with his great hands, his
versatility, his quickness and
his 100 percent effort. He is one
of the finest pass receivers in
the history of this area.
Andrews was impressive
with his throwing arm, his eye
for the interception, his capable
punting and his leadership.
Dave mixed his plays well and
inspired his teammates to the
great things they achieved this
season.
But when all is said and done,
realizing that this was a
brilliant team effort, Baldini
proved himself to be one of the
finest all-around football
players we have ever seen. This
young man was a brilliant
linebacker, bringing bigger
runners down with the greatest
of ease. He never gave up on a
rushing attempt, finishing his
career with 1,040 yards, scored
66 career points and even
caught'29 passes during his
career. This without even
mentioning his blocking ability.
Mike Baldini was a super
football player, the kind every
coach hopes for.
