love this description of winter by John O’ Charles Dickens <strong>and</strong> the American writer, Washington Irving,<br />

I Donoghue. It portrays a season which, are credited with restoring the Christmas season to one of<br />

ContinUing oUr preparation<br />

for<br />

the eUCharistiC Congress<br />

“Prepare the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight.” (Mark 1:3)<br />

As we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ at Christmas,<br />

what more appropriate time is there to continue <strong>our</strong><br />

j<strong>our</strong>ney towards the Eucharistic Congress? In the selected<br />

Readings for the season of Advent we are told that John the<br />

Baptist appeared in the wilderness, ‘proclaiming a baptism of<br />

repentance,’ <strong>and</strong> the people of the whole countryside were<br />

going out to him.<br />

Mark opens his Gospel with the words, “The beginning of<br />

the Gospel of Jesus Christ…” At the time this was written,<br />

Jerusalem had collapsed, the Temple had been destroyed:<br />

people thought it was the end, <strong>and</strong> Mark was saying ‘it’s only<br />

the beginning!’ After <strong>all</strong> the horror stories <strong>and</strong> sc<strong>and</strong>als we have<br />

been reading <strong>and</strong> hearing about in recent times, what would<br />

it be like if someone stood in <strong>our</strong> midst today <strong>and</strong> said: “The<br />

beginning…”?! What a statement of hope that would be.<br />

One of the loveliest aspects of the Christian faith is its<br />

emphasis on forgiveness. Forgiveness is a process. We first<br />

need to forgive <strong>our</strong>selves, as soon as we take responsibility for<br />

the wrong we have done. God is greater than <strong>our</strong> own accusing<br />

heart. After we have forgiven <strong>our</strong>selves then we can approach<br />

others <strong>and</strong> seek their forgiveness. Fin<strong>all</strong>y, we can go to God<br />

<strong>and</strong> celebrate that forgiveness.<br />

ways we have failed in <strong>our</strong> c<strong>all</strong>ing as Baptised Christians: we<br />

are c<strong>all</strong>ed to take <strong>our</strong> own darkness seriously. Everyone has<br />

sinned <strong>and</strong> is in need of forgiveness. Yet we <strong>all</strong> realise how<br />

difficult <strong>and</strong> even how risky it is to offer forgiveness: <strong>our</strong> open<br />

h<strong>and</strong> of reconciliation may be rejected, or we may reason ‘How<br />

can I forgive if I am unable to forget?’ In spite of everything,<br />

however, the Scripture tells us we must forgive. We belong to<br />

Christ, not just by forgiving others, but by receiving Christ’s<br />

forgiveness in <strong>our</strong> own sinful lives. The supreme words of<br />

forgiveness came from Christ’s own lips as he was dying on<br />

the Cross: “Father, forgive them. They do not know what they<br />

are doing.”<br />

On Friday, 9 December, there will be a service of<br />

Reconciliation in the parish church at 8.00 p.m. following<br />

evening Mass.<br />

As a parish we will have the opportunity to acknowledge<br />

together that we are <strong>all</strong> in need of forgiveness <strong>and</strong> that we also<br />

need to forgive. Let us pray that this gathering will be a lovely<br />

moment in the life of <strong>our</strong> parish, when we will claim again<br />

<strong>our</strong> own life for Christ <strong>and</strong> give back to others, even perhaps<br />

to members of <strong>our</strong> own families, the life we may have taken<br />

from them by <strong>our</strong> lack of forgiveness.<br />

remembers the WYD trip to Madrid last August<br />

It was one of those unknown h<strong>our</strong>s, 2 am, when I got up.<br />

The grogginess was soon lost to an excited buzz, the penny<br />

had dropped, I was going to World Youth Day this morning.<br />

The bus <strong>and</strong> plane trip seemed only a few minutes because<br />

at what still seemed 2:30 am, I was setting foot on Spanish<br />

soil.<br />

My name is Ronan Maher <strong>and</strong> I travelled to WYD 2011<br />

in Madrid. It was a trip that completely surpassed any<br />

expectations I ever had. From coping with severe heat, 41<br />

degrees on some days, to acting as an interpreter on a crowded<br />

train, I enjoyed every minute of it. The experience of meeting<br />

so many young people from so many different nations, <strong>all</strong><br />

together for the one purpose was truly amazing. To see nearly<br />

1 million people sit in open air, during a thunder storm,<br />

to watch the Holy Father is something else indeed. There<br />

isn’t enough space for me to write everything but I’ll write<br />

this; the trip was inspirational, from prayer to hikes <strong>and</strong> the<br />

friends I’ve made is something I will not forget.<br />

My J<strong>our</strong>ney from Faith Friends to<br />

<strong>Parish</strong> Pastoral Minister<br />

This month we welcome Donal Mahon to the <strong>Parish</strong><br />

team. Donal has been involved in various parish<br />

activities over the years while studying Pastoral Ministry.<br />

Origin<strong>all</strong>y from Wexford, he lives in <strong>Newbridge</strong> with his<br />

wife <strong>and</strong> two daughters. We are delighted to have him with<br />

us on the Team <strong>and</strong> wish him every blessing <strong>and</strong> support.<br />

He introduces himself as follows:<br />

For many of us, the mention of Faith Friends is like a blast<br />

from the past! For me it was the beginning of a j<strong>our</strong>ney<br />

that has led me to my new role here in the parish as <strong>Parish</strong><br />

Pastoral Minister. Faith Friends was a programme run in<br />

the parish here over 10 years ago that involved parents with<br />

their childrens’ First Communion preparation.<br />

Involvement in Faith Friends was the beginning of a<br />

j<strong>our</strong>ney, not just for my daughter, but for me. It helped<br />

me to realise that my own underst<strong>and</strong>ing of faith had not<br />

moved on since my Confirmation. I attended <strong>all</strong> the usual<br />

religious events such as Sunday Mass, Christmas & Easter<br />

ceremonies but a deeper sense of faith was not there.<br />

I then began a 10 year j<strong>our</strong>ney that took me from a<br />

‘Preparing for Ministry’ c<strong>our</strong>se to a BA (Hons) in Pastoral<br />

Ministry, at present I am doing<br />

a c<strong>our</strong>se in Catechetics that<br />

is helping me fine-tune my<br />

skills for working in the area of<br />

Adult Faith Development.<br />

Our faith j<strong>our</strong>ney is never<br />

ending: Every day we awaken, we begin another part of<br />

that j<strong>our</strong>ney. So often it can be filled with grief, hardship,<br />

disappointments, <strong>and</strong> we think we are alone on the j<strong>our</strong>ney<br />

but we never are. God never leaves <strong>our</strong> side even though it<br />

might seem that way sometimes. To me, God just st<strong>and</strong>s<br />

back <strong>and</strong> gives us the space we need.<br />

In St. John’s Gospel, chapter 1:38 Jesus asks “what are you<br />

looking for?” Ten years ago I heard these words <strong>and</strong> asked<br />

for what I wanted. Today I am living the answer in my role<br />

as husb<strong>and</strong>, parent, parish pastoral minister <strong>and</strong> friend.<br />

My new role as a <strong>Parish</strong> Pastoral Minister is to help others<br />

to find their answer to Jesus question: “What are you<br />

looking for?”<br />

"A star from Jacob takes the leadership, a sceptre arises from Israel."<br />

Rembr<strong>and</strong>t was one of the greatest of artists. His portraits Gospel (Mt 21:23-27), we see the prophecy fulfilled: the<br />

are matchless; his Bible scenes deeply atmospheric. promised one is with us. His leadership is ch<strong>all</strong>enged by<br />

Probably the most unusual of these shows a man beating those who claim authority. He turns their question back on<br />

a donkey. An angel st<strong>and</strong>s over both. The donkey seems them, for it will be others who will recognise him for who<br />

to be speaking; <strong>and</strong> in fact it is. The pagan seer Salaam has he truly is.<br />

been summoned by a king hostile to the Israelite settlers<br />

to c<strong>all</strong> down a curse upon them. The donkey sees an angel<br />

bar the way <strong>and</strong> refuses to move. As the donkey's master<br />

beats her, she asks why he is doing so. Then Balaam at last<br />

sees <strong>and</strong> obeys the angel <strong>and</strong> consequently refuses to curse<br />

the Israelites. Instead, he utters one of the most beautiful<br />

blessings in the whole of scripture.<br />

Within the blessing there is a prophecy that touches every<br />

Christian heart: "I see him - but not in the present, I behold<br />

him - but not close at h<strong>and</strong>: a star from Jacob takes the<br />

Advent invites us to recognise <strong>all</strong> the more his unique<br />

authority. It is an authority of love <strong>and</strong> not of power.<br />

There will be no sceptre of worldly power in the manger of<br />

Bethlehem. But in the darkness of the night there will be a<br />

star that shines as no other. May we be blessed anew by his<br />

light at Christmas, <strong>and</strong> may we bless <strong>all</strong> those around us.<br />

God <strong>our</strong> Father, may Christ y<strong>our</strong> Son be the true authority<br />

in <strong>our</strong> lives, the s<strong>our</strong>ce of <strong>our</strong> freedom <strong>and</strong> peace. May his<br />

light free us from <strong>all</strong> that is darkness in <strong>our</strong> lives, <strong>and</strong> may<br />

leadership, a sceptre arises from Israel." In St Matthews we be a true blessing for <strong>all</strong> those we meet.<br />

Apart from its great<br />

religious significance,<br />

Christmas <strong>and</strong> the breathless<br />

excitement of a visit from<br />

Santa with his reindeer <strong>and</strong><br />

sleigh is a particularly magic<br />

Sadly, however, the magic is in danger of<br />

dissipation when doubts start creeping into little minds – fuelled<br />

by listening to older companions – about the very existence of<br />

Santa Claus. Is there re<strong>all</strong>y a Santa Claus, they ask ?<br />

Well, I can reassure them <strong>and</strong> everyone else who doubts –<br />

THERE REALLY IS A SANTA CLAUS. How can I be so sure?<br />

Because my Daddy met him on the bus to Kildare <strong>and</strong> the proof<br />

of the (Christmas) pudding is in the eating !<br />

When I was a very little boy, many, many years ago, living in Cut<br />

Bush, the first present I remember from Santa was a wheelbarrow<br />

<strong>and</strong> many’s the happy day I spent filling the barrow with stones,<br />

depositing them in a corner of the garden, going back for more<br />

<strong>and</strong> so on until I had assembled a re<strong>all</strong>y big heap. In hindsight,<br />

what a smart man my Dad was to get his garden cleaned up in<br />

such a pleasurable way !<br />

But the one Christmas I remember better than any was a couple<br />

of years later when I had my heart set on a game of Ludo (a<br />

board game played with different col<strong>our</strong>ed markers <strong>and</strong> dice).<br />

I wrote off to Santa with my wish but, in the meantime, didn’t<br />

I spot my heart’s desire in the window of O’Donnell’s shop on<br />

The Curragh, across the road from the Picture House where we<br />

walked the couple of miles across the plains to<br />

the Sunday matinee whenever we could get the<br />

f<strong>our</strong>pence admission to “the gods”.<br />

There it was - <strong>and</strong> Santa or no Santa (I<br />

obviously didn’t trust him 100%) - I couldn’t wait to get my<br />

h<strong>and</strong>s on it. To get the half-crown to buy it, I sacrificed a<br />

couple of matinees, scrounged thruppence here <strong>and</strong> sixpence<br />

there from Ma, Granny, <strong>and</strong> Aunt Lil until, on Christmas Eve,<br />

I proudly marched home with it under me oxter. I couldn’t<br />

wait to show it to Ma but, to my great dismay, she was far from<br />

pleased. She gave out to me something fierce (most unlike her)<br />

telling me that Santa was bringing me the Ludo as I had asked<br />

him for it. When I protested <strong>and</strong> said I would leave a note for<br />

him requesting Snakes & Ladders instead, she said it was too<br />

late as Harry Rafferty, my next door pal, was getting the Snakes<br />

& Ladders.<br />

How could she be so sure, I asked. “BECAUSE” she said without<br />

batting an eyelid,<br />

“YOUR DADDY MET SANTA CLAUS ON THE BUS TO<br />

KILDARE YESTERDAY AND HE TOLD HIM”.<br />

I woke up Christmas morning to find that Santa had indeed<br />

brought me the Ludo – Mammy said that at least I was the only<br />

child in the Bush, maybe even in the whole wide world, who<br />

had two games of Ludo that Christmas – <strong>and</strong> meeting up with<br />

my pal, Harry, I found out that Santa had duly brought him the<br />

Snakes & Ladders. Irrefutable proof that Daddy had spoken in<br />

person to Santa Claus on the bus to Kildare !<br />

I had no further doubts but, for those who still need convincing,<br />

check out Pages 62-65 in my book Wise & Witty Words of<br />

Wonder in the <strong>Parish</strong> Centre !<br />

Assembling the crib was part of the Christmas ritual in my<br />

house; in fact it sign<strong>all</strong>ed the beginning of the Christmas<br />

season. it didn’t re<strong>all</strong>y take much - a cardboard box, a black<br />

plastic bag, a tin of fake snow <strong>and</strong> the well worn figures.<br />

The more mis-shapen the box the better because it gave<br />

the appearance of a cave; the black bag was carefully placed<br />

to cover the cardboard, <strong>and</strong> the spray on snow covered the<br />

places where the sellotape fastened the black plastic to the<br />

box.<br />

My sister initiated, <strong>and</strong> took charge of the project, each year.<br />

She was the eldest of seven children, <strong>and</strong> as is often the case<br />

for the eldest in a large family, a lot of responsibility rested<br />

on her shoulders. It was only to be expected that the task<br />

of the crib would be under her capable direction.<br />

Praying the Rosary as a family was a daily feature of <strong>our</strong><br />

home life. During the Christmas season the crib became a<br />

focus for <strong>our</strong> prayer as we knelt around it with <strong>our</strong> beads.<br />

Christmas was also the occasion for the<br />

biggest clean up that <strong>our</strong> home got <strong>all</strong><br />

year. House cleaning was always a sign<br />

for us that someone was coming to visit.<br />

The fact that the biggest clean up came<br />

at Christmas told us that the child in the<br />

crib was the most important guest of <strong>all</strong>.<br />

THE MASS:<br />

BECOME WHAT YOU RECEIVE<br />

Going to Holy Communion is a twofold action. It involves<br />

receiving <strong>and</strong> becoming. St. Augustine often instructed<br />

his congregations, "Receive the Body of Christ <strong>and</strong> become<br />

what you receive”. In receiving Holy Communion we ponder<br />

on the depth of Christ’s love for us. In becoming the Body of<br />

Christ we respond to that immense love.<br />

So much of modern society defines us by what we do or by<br />

what we have.<br />

What do you do for a living? What is y<strong>our</strong> income?<br />

What kind of car do y<strong>our</strong> drive?<br />

Communion defines us by<br />

‘who we are becoming’ –<br />

the kind of person we are<br />

becoming. Receiving Holy<br />

Communion should lead<br />

us to ask of <strong>our</strong>selves –<br />

what kind of person am I<br />

becoming?<br />

St. Paul, in his famous<br />

St. Augustine<br />

passage on love in his first<br />

letter to the people of<br />

Corinth in Greece, describes<br />

for us the kind of person we should strive to be. As you read<br />

his words replace the word ‘love’ with the word ‘Jesus’,<br />

Love is always patience <strong>and</strong> kind;<br />

Love is never jealous;<br />

Love is never boastful or conceited;<br />

Love is never rude or selfish;<br />

Love does not take offence <strong>and</strong> is not resentful.<br />

Love takes no pleasure in other people’s sins but delights in<br />

the truth;<br />

Love is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope <strong>and</strong> to endure<br />

whatever ends. (1 Cor. 13: 4-7)<br />

Imagine meeting such a person as Jesus. Imagine becoming<br />

such a person! Read it again <strong>and</strong> replace Jesus’ name with y<strong>our</strong><br />

own name!<br />

Don’t be disc<strong>our</strong>aged. Many of us may not reach such heights<br />

of personal growth, self-control <strong>and</strong> inner integrity but isn’t<br />

it worth striving for? Maybe that is why St. Paul begins this<br />

section of his letter, “Be ambitious for the higher gifts”.<br />

Wanting to become such a person is the first step <strong>and</strong> even if<br />

we can live only moments of such love in <strong>our</strong> lives then <strong>all</strong> the<br />

effort would not be in vain. However, remember even such<br />

the ‘indwelling of<br />

The ‘becoming’ always returns to the<br />

‘receiving’ – receiving His Body; receiving His Love in<br />

Holy Communion enables us to live such love. So the next<br />

time you put out y<strong>our</strong> h<strong>and</strong> or y<strong>our</strong> tongue to receive Holy<br />

Communion, know what you are asking for <strong>and</strong> know what<br />

you are receiving.<br />

Commissioning sending Out: Announcements<br />

Fin<strong>all</strong>y we prepare to go back to that world in which we will<br />

live for the coming week. Strengthened by this Eucharist, we<br />

are better prepared to take up the burdens of <strong>our</strong> daily lives.<br />

There may be announcements at this time which remind us of<br />

important activities coming up in the parish. The priest again<br />

says, “The Lord be with you” - the ritual phrase serves now as<br />

a farewell.<br />

Blessing <strong>and</strong> Dismissal<br />

We bow <strong>our</strong> heads to receive a blessing. As the priest names<br />

the Trinity - Father, Son <strong>and</strong> Holy Spirit - we make the Sign<br />

of the Cross. The priest or deacon then dismisses the assembly:<br />

“Go in peace.” And we give <strong>our</strong> liturgical “yes” by saying,<br />

“Thanks be to God.”<br />

Living the eucharist in the world<br />

We leave the assembly <strong>and</strong> the church building but we carry<br />

something with us. What happens in <strong>our</strong> lives during the week<br />

gives deeper meaning to the ritual actions we have celebrated at<br />

Mass, whether it’s family, work with poor or just plain work.<br />

It is only in relation to <strong>our</strong> daily lives that the full meaning of<br />

the ritual actions of the Mass becomes clear to us.<br />

<strong>our</strong> Lady of guadalupe – patron of the americas<br />

Feastday: December 12th<br />

Missionaries who first came to Mexico with the<br />

conquistadors had little success in the beginning.<br />

After nearly a generation, only a few hundred Native<br />

Mexicans had converted to the Christian faith.<br />

Whether they simply did not underst<strong>and</strong> what the<br />

missionaries had to offer or whether they resented<br />

these people who made them slaves, Christianity<br />

was not popular among the native people.<br />

Then in 1531 miracles began to happen. Jesus'<br />

own mother appeared to humble Juan Diego. The<br />

signs - of the roses, of the uncle miraculously cured of<br />

a deadly illness, <strong>and</strong> especi<strong>all</strong>y of her beautiful image on<br />

Juan's mantle - convinced the people there was something to<br />

be considered in Christianity. Within a short time, six million<br />

Native Mexicans had themselves baptized as Christians.<br />

There is a new Fixed Term Tenant Purchase Scheme<br />

which will remain open until the end of 2011. If you have<br />

been a local authority tenant for over 10 years you can buy<br />

y<strong>our</strong> home at a discount from current market prices. The<br />

maximum discount available is 45% on the market price of<br />

y<strong>our</strong> home. (This discount is based on a 3% discount for<br />

each year of tenancy up to a maximum of 15 years.) You<br />

must also pay stamp duty on the purchase. This is fixed at<br />

€100 for <strong>all</strong> sales under the Scheme.<br />

You can finance the purchase price in the following<br />

we learn two important lessons, one of faith <strong>and</strong> one of<br />

underst<strong>and</strong>ing.<br />

The first lesson is that God has chosen Mary to lead<br />

us to Jesus. No matter what critics may say of the<br />

devotion of Mexicans (<strong>and</strong> Mexican descendants) to<br />

Our Lady of Guadalupe, they owe their Christianity<br />

to her influence. If it were not for her, they would not<br />

know her son, <strong>and</strong> so they are etern<strong>all</strong>y grateful.<br />

The second lesson we take from Mary herself. Mary<br />

appeared to Juan Diego not as a European madonna<br />

but as a beautiful Aztec princess speaking to him in his<br />

own Aztec language. If we want to help someone appreciate<br />

the gospel we bring, we must appreciate the culture <strong>and</strong> the<br />

mentality in which they live their lives. By underst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

them, we can help them to underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> know Christ. Our<br />

Lady of Guadalupe is patron of the Americas.<br />

If you wish to apply for a mortgage loan to y<strong>our</strong> local<br />

authority you will have to show (with documentary<br />

evidence) that you have been refused a loan by two<br />

financial institutions <strong>and</strong> y<strong>our</strong> income must be below a<br />

certain amount. You must also state the amount of the loan<br />

refused. If you wish to sell y<strong>our</strong> house within 20 years of<br />

purchase you must get the consent of y<strong>our</strong> local authority.<br />

The new Fixed Term Tenant Purchase Scheme does<br />

not replace the existing Tenant Purchase Scheme which<br />

<strong>Newbridge</strong> resident, Lorcán O’R<strong>our</strong>ke has published a book<br />

of Great Sporting Memories – from local club to Olympic<br />

Games in aid of Chernobyl Children International (CCI) which<br />

was launched by Jimmy Magee at <strong>Newbridge</strong> Credit Union on<br />

29 November.<br />

The publication contains 72 stories written by many of Irel<strong>and</strong>’s<br />

best-known sports persons <strong>and</strong> sports j<strong>our</strong>nalists. Among them<br />

are Kildare footb<strong>all</strong>ers Johnny Doyle, Dermot Earley <strong>and</strong><br />

Ronan Sweeney, leading horse trainer Dermot Weld <strong>and</strong> Eddie<br />
