Monday night, May 13th 2013 in
downtown Newbridge. The street,
not quite deserted, has a few late night
strollers meandering along, glancing
occasionally into shop windows. As
they approach the intersection of
Edward and Henry Street they become
aware of the old Bee Gee’s classic “Words” emanating from
McDonnell’s bar, aka Neeson’s.
A peep inside would have revealed an interior, heaving
with merry makers, all singing along with Johnny Peters
(Newbridge’s best interpreter of Bee Gees music) with
Derek McNamara and Billy Joyce on guitar and Miley
Wickham on sound.
It’s only words and words are all I have to
take your heart away.
60th birthday balloons sway to the rhythm of the music as
the birthday girl, Rita Sheridan (Smullen), surrounded by
friends and family takes to the floor.
Rita and Johnny, who had celebrated
his own special birthday a couple of
months earlier, affirm the new saying
that 60 is the new 50 or even 40. (I
reckon both have portraits in the
attic!!) Special guest on the night
was legendary singer Red Hurley
who, at the behest of her friend
Debbie, made a surprise appearance
for Rita, his number 1 fan. Tears
were shed as Red, whose voice is
still powerful, crooned a number
of his favourite songs including
the Eurovision hit “When” and
we transported ourselves out of the
recession and back to a world where
we were young and the future appeared golden.
Looking around the bar I watched as the younger generation
sang along with us to the old favourite “Delilah” and we
oldies in turn belted out The Killers “Are we human or
are we dancer” - No generation gap evident. A few more
dances to Joe Dolan classics like “It’s you, it’s you, it’s you”
and the night ended with Johnny’s famous rendition of
Noreen Bawn, the poignant song portraying the old and
new, curse of emigration.
We are the Rock and Roll Kids:
By Breda Reid
We are a spirited group, those of us who entered this
world in 1953; the year Hillary and Tenzing conquered
Everest. We are the baby boomers, who occasionally
refuse to act our age and occasionally act our shoe size to
the embarrassment of our children and grandchildren. A
rock and roll generation whose childhood musical tastes
were whetted by a young Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry;
we reached teenage-hood in the 60s with the Beatles,
the Stones and later Woodstock and San Francisco’s
flower power. We danced the night away embracing the
discotheque era of the 1970s with ABBA the Eagles and
John Travolta. We reared our children to the music of
Michael Jackson, Pat Benetar, Toto and Berlin on MTV
with Vincent Hanly in the 80s. We watched our children
develop their own musical tastes as the Boy and Girl bands
began to take hold in the late 80s and early 90s. A-ha, Bros
and TakeThat being the favourites of our eldest daughters
at that stage. Their musical tastes have matured since then
I am glad to report. The demise of Top of the Pops has
meant I have missed out the trends
of the noughties and am nearly
completely out of touch with the
myriad groups and singers on the
scene today. Rihanna, Lady Ga Ga
and Beyonce being the exceptions.
The dance mania sounds our
youngest children danced to did
not get my feet tapping. I am oldfashioned
enough to, admit that
Rap music also left me unmoved
although I did love Eminem and
Dido’s song “Stan”. Good music
with a melody and good lyrics
encompasses all generations. Jeepers
I do sound old!
Anyway I’m putting out a call for
those of you entering your diamond decade or any other
decade for that matter. Why don’t we organise a party
for all of us sometime during this summer? The theme
being “1953 A Vintage Year”. We can recall the decades
with music and/or dress if needs be. Give me a call on
045)432444 if you are interested in organising such an
event.
To accompany our theme of The Gathering we are including this essay by
Barbara Scully first heard on Sunday Miscellany in May. It features the
thoughts of a mother whose daughter has emigrated to Australia and will I
think resonate with many parents in a similar situation. Ed.
Till the next time...
“Well, that’s about it I suppose.... no
more news.”
I hate these words as they usually signal
that our conversation on Skype is coming
to its natural conclusion. Except that
there is nothing natural about Skype.
It’s contrived and forced and virtual.
It’s the best thing we have when we are
9,000 miles apart but it’s not real.
We finally hang up... after the lengthy
‘bye so, ok bye, ok love you, ok bye, bye,
bye’ thing we do, as my cursor hovers
over the red ‘hang up call’ button on
screen. Then there’s that horrible noise
that sounds like something being sucked
down a drain and she’s gone.
The picture of her, dressed in her pink
PJs lying on her bed stays with me as I
imagine her jumping up to head off to
brush her teeth. A few moments later
and she will return to climb into bed
under the lightest of cotton sheets, her
beloved black cat settling down beside
her. I sit staring at my laptop and curse
that yet again I have nothing interesting
in for lunch.
Then I curse the bloody weather and
freezing temperatures, I curse Enda
Kenny and his entire cabinet, I curse
Fianna Fail before them and finally curse
the gaping huge distance that separates
me from my first born. I allow myself a
few minutes to wallow in the frustration
of not being able to give her a hug..... or
to receive one of hers. I desperately want
to be able to smell her hair and wonder
at glow of her beautiful skin. I want to
feel the air around her shimmer as she
laughs. I want to savour the sound as it
falls all around me.
Then I get cross with myself for feeling
sorry for myself when I know so many
in this country are suffering fates much
worse than mine.
I bang cups and plates around in the
kitchen and the dog looks at me with
his doleful eyes, sensing that there is
violence and anger bubbling gently
somewhere just beyond his perception.
I make a cup of tea and sit at my kitchen
table. The dog settles at my feet. And
for the hundredth time I realise that right
now what I want more than anything
else is to have her sit opposite me and to
talk rubbish and gossip and giggle. Hell,
I would even take an argument with her
if it meant being able to share her space,
to be in her energy.
I want to look around me and see the
imprint of her life in mine. A handbag
here, a scarf there, shoes abandoned
by the front door. I miss her always,
but sometimes
desperately.
She is probably
sleeping now in the
heat of the Perth
night, under the
languid movement of
a ceiling fan. I think
of all the nights when
she was little and I
would check her
room before I retired
to bed. Bending
down to stroke her
hair and pull the
duvet up higher.
I didn’t know then
how precious those
days were. Perhaps
it’s just as well.
I don’t know when I will see her again
and perhaps that also is just as well.
Because right now all that is keeping me
sane is the vague hope that somehow, in
the not too distant future, the possibility
of making the trip to the other side of
the world will suddenly reveal itself.
I drain my tea. “Come on dog, let’s go
for a walk”. The pain has passed. Till
the next time.
“Habemus Episcopum
– We Have a Bishop!”
Interview with Father Denis Nulty, Bishop-elect
of the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin
On Tuesday 7 May last it was
announced that Pope Francis had
appointed Father Denis Nulty as Bishop
of Kildare and Leighlin. The diocese
had been awaiting the appointment of
a new bishop since the resignation of
Bishop Jim Moriarty was accepted in
early 2010.
Brenda Drumm from Newbridge had
the opportunity to meet with Bishopelect
Father Nulty and she shares the
following with News and Views.
My first question for Fr Nulty was how
he reacted when he received the call
from the Apostolic Nunciature:
Fr Denis Nulty: “When I got the call I
wasn’t expecting it, I wasn’t waiting for
it – I am a busy priest in Drogheda. It’s
humbling and it’s a very exciting time.
It’s a new challenge for me and new
pastures green.”
What will your initial priorities be as
Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin?
Fr Nulty: “I think my initial priorities
will be to meet the priests and meet the
people who are engaged at parish level.
It is a whole new diocese and a whole
new challenge and I look forward to
meeting people and to visiting parishes.”
Are you aware of all the imaginative
work in the diocese of Kildare and
Leighlin or had you heard about the
diocese before your appointment?
Fr Nulty: “There is very little that
misses people coming from the diocese
of Meath and we were certainly keeping
a good track on the www.kandle.ie
By Brenda Drumm
website. There were different issues that
we would have been aware of and we
were looking over the hedge so to speak!”
Have you given any thought to what
your Mission Statement or Motto
might be?
Fr Nulty: “I think my motto will be
something around shepherding – the
lovely Psalm ‘Shepherd me O Lord’ is
something which comes to mind and it
supported me greatly on the journey up
to the Apostolic Nunciature. That phrase
is a strong one and something about
shepherding will appear somewhere but
it is early days and I think my mission
statement will be very much to live the
Gospel.”
You are aware of the very many
challenges about vocations and the
difficulty with engaging young people
- have you given any thought as to how
you are going to address these issues?
Fr Nulty: “There is an awful lot in that
question – I think that the vocations one
is a priority not just for me but for every
diocese. We need new priests! There
are seven Permanent Deacons awaiting
ordination in this diocese and there is a
young man for ordination in June but I
would love to see more vocations. There
is no greater encouragement to priests
than to see new vocations. The wider
level of faith practice is a huge concern
too, but I am always one who looks
at the glass as half full rather than half
empty.”
Just before we finished our chat I
asked Bishop-elect Father Nulty if
Father Denis Nulty
there was anything he would like to
ask of the people of the diocese and
he simply said: “Prayers, I need your
prayers! Prayers of the people of both
the dioceses of Meath and Kildare &
Leighlin are what will carry me through
this time of transition.”
As he left I was struck by words he said
on the day of his appointment:
“I am a priest who works earnestly,
who loves the priesthood and loves
working with priests and people. But
I am a priest who needs to learn
a great deal about the story of this
diocese, its geography, its people, its
priests, its traditions and its history
– be patient with me as I embark on
a journey that will take me to every
parish in this Diocese, to listen to the
Spirit speaking through the faith and
example of committed priests and
parishioners.”
Father Nulty is 49 [he turns 50 in
June] and he is originally from Slane in
County Meath. He has been a priest for
25 years in the diocese of Meath and
he has spent the last 15 years as Parish
Priest in Drogheda, Co Louth.
“While he was still far off, his
father saw him and was filled
with compassion” (Luke 15:20)
Sr. Catherine Moran
One of the early miracles recounted in the Gospel of Mark
tells of the healing of a man who had been paralysed.
While the healing of the man is the main focus of the event,
I would like to dwell on how the paralytic was brought to
Jesus.
The report had gone out that “Jesus was at home… and many
were gathered together so that there was no longer room, not
even about the door.” Four men arrived carrying the paralysed
man on a pallet or mat, and when they realised they could
not get through the crowd to Jesus, they made an opening
in the roof above him and let down the pallet on which the
paralytic lay, thus enabling them to lower the man in front
of Jesus. These men were convinced that Jesus would cure
their friend. One wonders if, after all their trouble, they were
at first disappointed when Jesus simply said to the paralytic,
“Your sins are forgiven.”
What motivated these four men to take the paralytic to Jesus?
I would think that, while they had faith to believe that Jesus
would heal him, they were moved with compassion also for
the man.
Compassion is mentioned several times in the Bible –
both in the Old and New Testaments. The word means
‘suffering with’. God is sometimes referred to as a ‘God of
compassion’. According to a renowned Scripture scholar,
Carroll Stuhlmueller C.P., the Hebrew letter meaning ‘eye’
or ‘spring’ is found in the middle verse of all the verses in the
Book of Psalms – as if the eye of God looks compassionately
on every moment of our lives and sometimes sheds a tear.
The disciples sensed the infinite compassion of God in
Jesus of Nazareth. We are told that Jesus was “moved with
compassion” at the sight of human suffering. He saw and
experienced the magnitude of human pain. The Good
Samaritan was moved with compassion at the plight of the
man who had fallen among robbers.
It is possible, also, to reach back with compassion to
situations of suffering or distress. During the month of July
last year I was present at a very moving ceremony in a town
land in North Kerry. It took place in a field, referred to as “a
The Irish name for fuchsia, as you may know,
is Deora Dé (God's tears)
graveyard for the forgotten dead” – a burial place for babies
who died before they were baptised and were not afforded
the Christian rites of burial. These babies had been buried
at dead of night in lonely places, without ceremony or grave
marker because, in the words of the man who shared a
reflection during the Mass, “an authoritarian and uncaring
Church decreed that such children could not be buried
within consecrated ground.” Thankfully we now live in more
enlightened times. We are all made for the vision of God.
A large crowd from the parish attended the ceremony,
which was a real community event. A group of men from
the locality had prepared the field for the celebration of the
Eucharist. Homes in the locality had provided refreshments
for all who attended the ceremony. The evening was dull,
but all remarked afterwards how the sun had shone brightly
during the service. It was also noted how a little bird had
sent out a ‘thimble-full of song’ as the Mass began, only to
be followed by a chorus of birdsong. What a joy it was to
reclaim all those little children for Christ and to reach back
in compassion to parents and families who had mourned
for them. It is what the Kingdom of God is all about – a
community of love, compassion and justice where God’s
presence empowers people to love and serve each other. In
the words of St. Augustine, “The Christian community is a
great hospital.”
Cherishing Childhood
Our childhood is what makes
us who we are, and it’s also
what sustains us when we enter into
the sometimes crushing reality of
adulthood. This world isn’t easy to live
in. The monsters you once thought
hid under the bed don’t hide anymore,
they walk the streets, and they are
every bit as frightening as when you
lay huddled beneath the bedcovers at
night after a bad dream.
When you grow up, you enter into a
world of jobs and mortgages, a world
of endless responsibility; a world that
can gobble you right up if you let it.
You learn that bad things do happen
and that they happen every second of
every day. As you grow up you begin to
learn about the past, and the depravity
of your own species through the ages.
The boogie man comes knocking at
your front door with a gun and a smile,
and life stops being fair and becomes
ugly.
It’s easy to get lost in the big bad
world, which is why your childhood is
so important. It lets you exist in a time
where things are simpler, where you see
the world through a keyhole and the
grass is green right where you stand.
You get to exist in a place where all the
fairy tales are real, when you might still
get your Hogwarts letter, where life is
made of wonder and you don’t scare
so easily.
But once you grow up the simple
truth is that life can be hard, brutally
hard, and you need somewhere to go,
memories to sustain you when it feels
like you’re being suffocated under the
life you’ve made for yourself. You need
to be able to remember back to the days
when you felt you could be anything
in the world,
from a princess to
Pokémon Master.
You have to be
able to remember
when the world
was an idea, when
the doors were
opening instead of
closing and when
every crack and
crevice was full of
magic.
But sadly there
are many people
who had their
childhood taken
from them, whose lives have always
been complicated. These people
deserve to be given a chance to salvage
their own childhood, and they can’t
do it on their own. Those of us who
had a happy childhood have to help
them, have to allow them to enter
into our world. Force them to watch
every single Harry Potter movie and
make them read the books you read
when you were a kid. Bring them
to the beach and make them build a
sandcastle, give them the memories
they never got to make.
The gift of a childhood is the greatest
gift you can give another person,
because within it lies the pathway to
everything else, the basic understanding
of love and the simplistic goodness
that we all need to fall back on. We
could all use a little childish logic now
and then, giving things because it’s
right, not because you want to look
good, doing things without expecting
anything in return.
Maybe your childhood wasn’t perfect,
By Emma Tobin
maybe your life has never stopped
being complicated. Maybe your
parents taught you things you wish
you didn’t know. Regardless of the lot
you were dealt as a child - as an adult,
as a parent you have to be the one to
teach your children what you wish
you had been taught, and you must
always be mindful of the millions of
children in the world today who have
no childhood because their world is
consumed by war and poverty. Their
world is broken, shattered, along with
every dream they ever dared to dream.
English poet John Betjeman said,
"Childhood is measured out by sounds
and smells and sights, before the dark
hour of reason grows."
Cherish your children and give them
a childhood worth remembering,
because it’s the foundation that holds
them up.
Children and young people reading
this – you too must cherish and do
your best to enjoy your childhood –
you owe it to your adult self!
My Day at The Curragh Racecourse
At 9:15am my class left school on
the bus. The teachers kept asking
us did we have a big breakfast because
they knew it was going to be a long day.
In Ireland you would most likely have
gloomy weather but, this day was sunny
and most importantly warm! (I am so
excited).
When we arrived at the Curragh
Racecourse we were led to
Administration. There we met our leader
Evan. He explained to all of us that horse
racing is part of Ireland and our culture.
He said
“Horse Racing is to Ireland as soccer is to
Brazil and here we would learn everything
to know about the phenomenal universe
of Horse Racing.” (Now I was thrilled
and thought where better to learn than
here!)
Evan lead us to the pre-parade ring,
surrounding it were wooden stables
where horses stayed before a race. In the
middle of the ring was short green grass
and a growing tree.
We were introduced to a local trainer by
the name of James Leavy, and told he
would explain about being a trainer.
James starts his day off by waking up
bright and early in the morning at 5 am
during the tropical month of summer
but since winter mornings are bitter
and dark he wakes up at around 7 am.
James trains horses in flat racing and the
National Hunt racing. Every day he sets
up a schedule for the horses to follow. It
includes trotting in the forest, galloping
on the racecourse, cantering and walking.
Daily exercise builds stamina, speed,
endurance, muscle, body mass and diet.
In the Curragh Racecourse there are 4
medical bays or facilities where injured
horses go to get patched up, so medical
care is taken care of by the trainers as
well. Spas are also used to ensure every
horse looks glamorous before a race. If a
horse is injured it swims in a swimming
pool to ease itself. Trainers are one of the
most important people that make sure
horses are at their peak before a race!
Then we made our way to the horse
racing simulator. I was petrified when I
saw it. It looked like a huge mechanical
bull. I wanted to ride it but now I
didn’t want to get near it. A gentleman
explained to us about how a person
trains to become a jockey. They take in
16-18 year olds to train (they are called
apprentices). The man said that they
have a schedule to follow as well; they
have classes as any student would. He
said if jockeys need to be light they don’t
build muscle as muscle weigh them
down. Instead they do swimming and
running to lose weight. They also have
a diet of fish, meat, fruit and vegetables.
Then he had an apprentice demonstrate
on the simulator. He asked us questions
and if we answered correctly we would
get a shot at it. I was hysterically laughing
when my classmates went on it and
everyone else started laughing as well.
Then Evan led us to the farrier, Donal.
Donal makes horse shoes. He makes
them using a kiln, an anvil and different
sorts of tools. He taught me that an anvil
has different names for the different
parts of it. The flat part is called the face,
the sort of horn coming from the side is
called a beak, going down is the waist
and legs. The different names of the
tools are: the turning hammer, the ball
point hammer, the stamp, the pitchel
and tongs for holding the horse shoe.
Donal very quickly made 2 horse shoes.
It was really warm because of the kiln.
Donal said if we can answer a question
we would get the horse shoe for our
class. He held up one of the hammers
and asked “what hammer is this”.
My Day at The
Curragh Racecourse
By Matas Misevicius
I raised my hand and said the
turning hammer and I got it
right, naturally. Donal said if
he worked really fast he would make 40 a
day but he also has to fit the horses with
the shoes. My teacher said I can take the
horse shoe home at the end of 5th class.
I was overjoyed when she told me. I
couldn’t help but smile.
Now we finally got onto the racecourse.
Another gentleman taught us about the
racecourse. He pointed out holes in the
ground. They were there because when
horses race, mud and dirt from the grass
gets stuck to the horses’s hooves, leaving
holes in the track. To repair and prepare
the track workers put sand, silt and grass
seeds to make better racing conditions
for horses. Then the man told us about
the plastic barrier around the track. It’s
plastic because if a jockey fell they would
bounce right back. People go around the
track to put the barrier there. One person
puts the shaft in place horizontally and
another puts a shaft down to hold it (he/
she is called the legs). Then he told us
about where the horses start to race at
the red pole. He also taught us when 2
horses are really close to the finish line
and we don’t know which one won,
a camera then takes a picture and the
judges can see who won. At the end we
had a race from the red pole. It was really
tense and there was not enough space for
everyone but it was still cool. Everyone
ran swiftly but the winners won a cap
or a shirt.
After the racecourse we went to the
jockey changing room. We met Paul
The Curragh Racecourse
Foxe a jockey master. He explained to us
what he does. He gets all the gear for the
jockey ready and makes sure the jockey
has the right colours on. Paul passed us
the equipment and we all took a look
at them. There were pants, boots (the
boots had a sort of horse shoe to prevent
slipping), breeches, goggles, saddle and a
number cloth. He said if a jockey is too
light he puts metal plates in the saddle to
make it heavier.
Then an actual jockey came in. His
name is Jamie. He talked to us about
the dangers of being a jockey and about
horses being badly injured that they have
to be put down, but sometimes they can
survive.
Then Paul showed the scales where they
weigh jockeys to see if they can race.
After the race they get weighed again.
Then we went to the Stewards’ Room
(Paul said it was the jockeys Principal’s
room). Jamie told us that jockeys go in
there to be told what they did wrong like
hitting the horse too much or bumping
into other horses.
After that we finally went back to
school, where I sat and pondered about
my wonderful day in”the Curragh of
Kildare”. People travel from all over the
world to visit “the heart of Irish racing
“at the Curragh Racecourse. I’m so
grateful that I have it on my doorstep!
The Year of Faith - The Ten Commandments
This month we
will look at
the last five of the
Commandments as
a tool for examining
our conscience
before the Sacrament
of Reconciliation.
SIXTH COMMANDMENT:
MAINTAIN INTEGRITY
You shall not commit adultery.
This commandment calls us to reflect
through our bodies what we believe in
our hearts. A married couple commits to
an exclusive relationship that will endure
through life's ups and downs.
Their sexual relationship embodies the
promises at the foundation of their
marriage. Any activity that takes away from
the total self-gift in a marriage violates this
commitment. This commandment also
prohibits sexual activity in relationships
that are not marriages and sexual
interactions in which one person is used
as an object to gratify the desires of the
other.
Do I withhold sharing part of myself
with my spouse in total self-gift? My
vulnerability? My trust? My fertility? My
complete commitment? Do my actions
reflect the promises underlying my most
important relationship? When have my
actions been less than loving? When
have I been unfaithful in thought or action?
Which of my activities or attitudes
weakens the honesty and completeness of
my self-gift in my relationships?
SEVENTH COMMANDMENT:
LIVE GRATITUDE
You shall not steal.
Living this commandment requires that
we treat our posses¬sions as gift, receive
them with gratitude, and recognise that all
things come from God. While we may own
property, we must understand ourselves as
stewards of God's gifts, measuring worth
by what we are rather than what we have.
Doing the right thing takes priority over
owning the "right" things. We learn to
treasure people rather than things.
When have I valued possessions over
God or others? Am I grateful for the things
I have? Or am I always wanting more?
Why? Am I a good steward of the earth and
its resources? When am I wasteful? Do I
litter? Recycle? Buy only what I truly need?
Have I been respectful of other people's
property? Have I stolen? Did I return
what didn't belong to me? Do I work for
justice?
EIGHTH COMMANDMENT:
UPHOLD HONESTY
You shall not bear false witness against
your neighbour.
God is the source of all truth, and love of
truth leads us to greater love of God.
This commandment urges us to pursue
the truth and to live in honesty.
We must never fear giving voice to the
truths of our faith by sharing what we
believe. We must learn to avoid lies, speak
with discretion and charity, and carefully
assess the truth of information before we
share it with others.
Am I honest? When have I been dishonest?
When have I lied? How has this hurt
someone else? Before I share information
with others, do I make sure that it
is true, charitable, and appropriate to
share? Do I gossip or tear down another's
reputation or good name? When have I
shared information that violated the
privacy of another? When have I betrayed
someone who trusted me? Why?
NINTH COMMANDMENT:
PROMISE FIDELITY
You shall not covet your neighbour’s wife.
This commandment prohibits the forms
of emotional infidelity that endanger
relationships by damaging the trust at their
base. Fidelity is an intentional decision to
save and share the best of ourselves for
the relationships in which we invest the
highest priority. It is fostered by avoiding
10
temptation, respecting the
relationships of others,
being modest, spending
time together, and loving selflessly.
Have I allowed lust or envy to make me
emotionally unfaithful? Have I pursued
emotional closeness with another instead of
working on my priority relationship? Do my
television and movie selections reflect
my values? Do friends or co-workers tempt
me to be unfaithful? Do I participate
in "harmless" flirtation? Have I been
immodest in dress or behaviour?
TENTH COMMANDMENT:
BESTOW GENEROSITY
You shall not covet your neighbour’s goods.
This commandment calls us to place our
trust solely in God who will give us all
we need. Being happy (not envious or
jealous) about another's good fortune and
moving past our desire to have more to a
desire to share more is a critical final step
in developing right relationships.
The habit of generosity requires that
we develop detachment, recognising that
our value as individuals comes from the
dignity with which God has gifted us, not
from what we own.
How do I decide how much of my time
and money I'll donate and to whom?
How truly generous am I? When have I
given because I expected something in
return? When have I been selfish or greedy?
When have I judged others by their
possessions and wealth or lack thereof?
A regular examination of conscience
will lead you to a regular celebration of
the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This
sacrament is a celebration of God's loving
forgiveness, a ritual reminder that, no
matter how far or how often you stray, God
is always waiting, with joy, to welcome
you back to the path. Celebrating this
sacrament requires the deep sharing that
increases your intimacy with God. Think
of it as regular auto maintenance and the
Ten Commandments as your GPS or
roadmap.
Local Authorities Choir performed on
Wednesday and a special thanks to all
Members of staff and parents
association in St Conleth's Infant School.
who gave their time for this great event.
This was a great success thanks to the
support of the Staff, Parents’ Association,
Parents, Board of Management all in the
school community and of course the
children of St. Conleth’s Infant School.
A brief history of the school
The Holy Family Sisters, a French Order,
set up this school. The first sod was
turned in June 1952 and the new Infant
Primary school, which cost £65,000,
opened its doors on October 4th 1953.
The pupil intake at that time was 520
students and there were 12 classrooms
constructed in the whole building. Sr.
Rose Fennessy was the school’s first
Principal. At that time, St. Conleth’s
Infant and St. Conleth’s and Mary’s was
one school. Prior to the opening of this
school, students attended the Patrician
Brothers School across the road.
Sr. Colette Keegan was the last Holy
Family Principal and in 2000, the
(see photos on back page)
running of the school was transferred
to lay people when Mrs Ann Dempsey
was appointed as Principal. The school
now has an intake of 446 pupils with 16
classroom teachers, 5 Learning Support
Resource teachers, 2 EAL teachers and
one Special Class teacher in our ASD
pre-school which opened in 2010. We
have currently a staff of 5 Special Needs
Assistants and a 6th part-time SNA and
of course Mary, our secretary, Bernard
our caretaker, and Teresa and Rosaleen
our cleaning staff. Our pupils come
from many countries around the world
including Ireland, Britain, Poland,
Latvia, Czech Republic, Ukraine and
Romania.
Many famous people have passed
through the school - RTE’s Brenda
Donoghue; singers and musicians Luka
Bloom, Tammy Browne and Eoin
Lynch; footballers Dermot Earley Junior
and Padraic Brennan to name but a few.
Margaret Harnett.
School Principal.
Did you ever ask yourself these questions?
Do the Alphabet song and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star
have the same tune?
Why did you just try singing the two songs above?
Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog's
face, he gets mad at you, but when you take him for a
car ride, he sticks his head out the window?
Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know
the batteries are dying?
Why does someone believe you when you say there are
four billion stars, but check when you say the paint is
wet?
Why doesn't Tarzan have a beard?
Why is it that no plastic bag will open from the end on
your first try?
Safeguarding Update
The “Kildare & Leighlin Safeguarding Children Policy and
Procedures” first published by our Diocese in 2009 has
recently been updated (February 2013). Since the first
edition was published, the diocese has experienced two
major independent reviews by the National Board for
Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church in Ireland
and by the HSE. Both reviews highlighted the very sound
policy foundation that was laid down in the first edition.
Both reviews made a series of recommendations that have
been fully incorporated into the second edition.
A key recommendation was that all following the publication
of the updated edition, all personnel involved in child
safeguarding activities should come together to draw up
a five year diocesan safeguarding plan. The purpose of
this plan is to ensure the continued implementation and
monitoring of the Policy and Procedures. The process
of drawing up this plan is currently underway; it will be
published in the near future.
Following the publication of the Policy & Procedures, a
number of seminars were organised around the diocese
so that all priests, parish staff and parish safeguarding
representatives could be updated on the new policy and
procedures. All members of the Parish Team here in
Newbridge attended one of these seminars. The next step
is to gather all those involved in activities with children
and young people in the parish and to update them on the
practical aspects of keeping our children and young people
safe.
We cherish and affirm each child as a gift from God and we
wish to take this opportunity to state that we will continue
to do all in our power to ensure that all children and young
people involved in any parish activity will do so safely.
The updated “Kildare & Leighlin Safeguarding Children
Policy and Procedures” is available on the diocesan website
– www.kandle.ie
Question: How much will it cost me to get a copy of my birth
certificate?
Answer: The cost of a birth certificate has recently increased
to €20. However, if you need it for social welfare purposes, for
example, to claim a payment, the cost is only €1.
The cost of other certificates has also increased, including:
Certified copy or certified extract of an entry in each of the
following registers: births, stillbirths, marriages, civil partnerships
or deaths.........................................................................€20
Authentication of a certified copy or certified extract of an
entry in each of the following registers: births, marriages, civil
partnerships or deaths.....................................................€10
Registration, change, alteration or addition of a forename of a
child in the Register of Births..............................................€5
Fees for certificates
Notification of intention to marry or to enter into a civil partnership
now costs €200.
You can get copies of Irish birth, marriage and death certificates
from any Registrar and from the General Register Office. As these
are public records anybody can apply.
You can also apply online for copies of certificates, including domestic
adoptions and stillbirths that have been registered.
Volunteering with
The Carers Association
• Have you experience in a Caring environment?
• Do you have 1 or 2 hours available to volunteer each week?
• Do you know what it is like to feel isolated and alone in a caring
environment?
• If so, would you like to support a Family Carer or an older
person in a similar situation?
• Do you want to be part of a vital service to Family Carers?
The Carers Association is currently seeking Volunteers to provide a
befriending service to Family Carers in Newbridge.
Befriending is a one-to-one, non-judgmental relationship where you can
volunteer your time to support and provide companionship to someone.
Many people benefit from the support of a befriender at a time of change in
their life or when they are socially isolated due to illness or old age.
Full training will be provided. Training commencing on the 11th June.
For more information on the programme or if interested in
becoming a Volunteer please contact Kelly-Ann on 086-0213749
Judge Roy Beans pays it forward
Tough economic times and growing poverty
in much of Europe has revived a humble
tradition that began some one-hundred years
ago in the Italian city of Naples. It's called
caffè sospeso — "suspended coffee": A
customer pays in advance for a person who
cannot afford a cup of coffee. The owner of
Judge Roy Beans in Newbridge, Vivian Carroll,
has taken on the concept and adapted it to suit
the situation of homeless people in our town.
Although homelessness in Newbridge is not of the same
scale as Dublin or other cities there is still a cohort of homeless people
who use the Michael Garry House on a regular occasion. Vivian thought
that a cup of coffee, though welcome, may not be nourishment enough
for a person living rough so he contacted the Michael Garry House to see
what might be done. Between them they have come up with a scheme in
which Judge Roy’s vegetable supplier will supply goods at cost price to
the shelter. So next time you have a coffee there you can either drink one
and pay for two or add a donation to the box provided.
What a great idea. If any other hostelries are operating a similar scheme
please contact us and we will publish your name too.
John (Kingston) Young,
Walshestown, Newbridge. Died January 16th 2013.
The family of the late John Young would like to extend our
heartfelt thanks to all who sympathised with us on our sad loss. A
very special thank you to those who visited him during his time
in Harold’s Cross Hospice and to those who cared for him there.
Thanks to everyone who called to the house, attended the funeral
and shared that sad time with us. It was wonderful to see so many
of our family and friends and hear all the kind words and special
memories of John’s life, career, golf outings and kind deeds. Your
cards and letters were most welcome and we have read them all
in our own time. Special thanks to our staff at Young’s Life
Pharmacy, your loyalty and support was and is invaluable.
Thank you to Dr. McGoldrick for your positive attitude and
always being there for John when he needed you, throughout his
life. A very special mention to Rev. Jean Wynne, Mary’s sisterin-law,
for her spiritual guidance throughout John’s illness and
for leading his funeral service with great dignity and warmth.
Thanks also to Rev Dr. John Marsden for his help with the
service and for accommodating John’s funeral wishes, which
celebrated his life, his work and his family. Thank you to the
Curragh Golf Club for their Guard of Honour and kind letters
and words and our neighbours who were constantly available
with their assistance. As it would not be possible to thank
everybody individually we wish to take this opportunity to let
you know that all those kindnesses have not gone unnoticed and
will remain with us and help us in the days ahead.
Anthony Hurley,
2 Standhouse Crescent, Newbridge,
Died 4th January 2013, Age 43.
Anthony’s wife Rosaleen, sons Jason and Shane, daughters
Abbie & Eden would like to thank most sincerely all those
who sympathised with them during the sad and sudden loss
of Anthony. A special thank you to Fr Willie and Fr Ruairí,
the staff of Naas Hospital and also the paramedics from The
Curragh & Naas who attended Anthony at his home. Thanks to
all who called to the house and attended the funeral, sent Mass
Cards and floral tributes. Thanks to Sarsfields GAA Club for
refreshments after the funeral. Also thanks to Lorraine Nolan
for her lovely singing at Anthony’s removal. A heartfelt thanks
to my neighbours, friends and relatives who were and still are
a great support to me and my children at this sad time. Also
most sincere thanks to John & Jim of Glennons Funeral Home
for their kindness. I hope this will be accepted as a token of our
appreciation and sincere gratitude. The Holy Sacrifice of the
Mass will be offered for your intentions.
