Safeguarding Update
The “Kildare & Leighlin Safeguarding Children Policy and
Procedures” first published by our Diocese in 2009 has
recently been updated (February 2013). Since the first
edition was published, the diocese has experienced two
major independent reviews by the National Board for
Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church in Ireland
and by the HSE. Both reviews highlighted the very sound
policy foundation that was laid down in the first edition.
Both reviews made a series of recommendations that have
been fully incorporated into the second edition.
A key recommendation was that all following the publication
of the updated edition, all personnel involved in child
safeguarding activities should come together to draw up
a five year diocesan safeguarding plan. The purpose of
this plan is to ensure the continued implementation and
monitoring of the Policy and Procedures. The process
of drawing up this plan is currently underway; it will be
published in the near future.
Following the publication of the Policy & Procedures, a
number of seminars were organised around the diocese
so that all priests, parish staff and parish safeguarding
representatives could be updated on the new policy and
procedures. All members of the Parish Team here in
Newbridge attended one of these seminars. The next step
is to gather all those involved in activities with children
and young people in the parish and to update them on the
practical aspects of keeping our children and young people
safe.
We cherish and affirm each child as a gift from God and we
wish to take this opportunity to state that we will continue
to do all in our power to ensure that all children and young
people involved in any parish activity will do so safely.

Know your rights:
Question: How much will it cost me to get a copy of my birth
certificate?
Answer: The cost of a birth certificate has recently increased
to €20. However, if you need it for social welfare purposes, for
example, to claim a payment, the cost is only €1.
The cost of other certificates has also increased, including:
Certified copy or certified extract of an entry in each of the
following registers: births, stillbirths, marriages, civil partnerships
or deaths.........................................................................€20
Authentication of a certified copy or certified extract of an
entry in each of the following registers: births, marriages, civil
partnerships or deaths.....................................................€10
Registration, change, alteration or addition of a forename of a
child in the Register of Births..............................................€5
Fees for certificates
Notification of intention to marry or to enter into a civil partnership
now costs €200.
You can get copies of Irish birth, marriage and death certificates
from any Registrar and from the General Register Office. As these
are public records anybody can apply.
You can also apply online for copies of certificates, including domestic
adoptions and stillbirths that have been registered.
