Volunteering with
The Carers Association
• Have you experience in a Caring environment?
• Do you have 1 or 2 hours available to volunteer each week?
• Do you know what it is like to feel isolated and alone in a caring
environment?
• If so, would you like to support a Family Carer or an older
person in a similar situation?
• Do you want to be part of a vital service to Family Carers?
The Carers Association is currently seeking Volunteers to provide a
befriending service to Family Carers in Newbridge.
Befriending is a one-to-one, non-judgmental relationship where you can
volunteer your time to support and provide companionship to someone.
Many people benefit from the support of a befriender at a time of change in
their life or when they are socially isolated due to illness or old age.
Full training will be provided. Training commencing on the 11th June.
For more information on the programme or if interested in
becoming a Volunteer please contact Kelly-Ann on 086-0213749
Judge Roy Beans pays it forward
Tough economic times and growing poverty
in much of Europe has revived a humble
tradition that began some one-hundred years
ago in the Italian city of Naples. It's called
caffè sospeso — "suspended coffee": A
customer pays in advance for a person who
cannot afford a cup of coffee. The owner of
Judge Roy Beans in Newbridge, Vivian Carroll,
has taken on the concept and adapted it to suit
the situation of homeless people in our town.
Although homelessness in Newbridge is not of the same
scale as Dublin or other cities there is still a cohort of homeless people
who use the Michael Garry House on a regular occasion. Vivian thought
that a cup of coffee, though welcome, may not be nourishment enough
for a person living rough so he contacted the Michael Garry House to see
what might be done. Between them they have come up with a scheme in
which Judge Roy’s vegetable supplier will supply goods at cost price to
the shelter. So next time you have a coffee there you can either drink one
and pay for two or add a donation to the box provided.
What a great idea. If any other hostelries are operating a similar scheme
please contact us and we will publish your name too.
