ContinUing oUr preparation
for
the eUCharistiC Congress
“Prepare the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight.” (Mark 1:3)
As we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ at Christmas,
what more appropriate time is there to continue our
journey towards the Eucharistic Congress? In the selected
Readings for the season of Advent we are told that John the
Baptist appeared in the wilderness, ‘proclaiming a baptism of
repentance,’ and the people of the whole countryside were
going out to him.
Mark opens his Gospel with the words, “The beginning of
the Gospel of Jesus Christ…” At the time this was written,
Jerusalem had collapsed, the Temple had been destroyed:
people thought it was the end, and Mark was saying ‘it’s only
the beginning!’ After all the horror stories and scandals we have
been reading and hearing about in recent times, what would
it be like if someone stood in our midst today and said: “The
beginning…”?! What a statement of hope that would be.
One of the loveliest aspects of the Christian faith is its
emphasis on forgiveness. Forgiveness is a process. We first
need to forgive ourselves, as soon as we take responsibility for
the wrong we have done. God is greater than our own accusing
heart. After we have forgiven ourselves then we can approach
others and seek their forgiveness. Finally, we can go to God
and celebrate that forgiveness.

ways we have failed in our calling as Baptised Christians: we
are called to take our own darkness seriously. Everyone has
sinned and is in need of forgiveness. Yet we all realise how
difficult and even how risky it is to offer forgiveness: our open
hand of reconciliation may be rejected, or we may reason ‘How
can I forgive if I am unable to forget?’ In spite of everything,
however, the Scripture tells us we must forgive. We belong to
Christ, not just by forgiving others, but by receiving Christ’s
forgiveness in our own sinful lives. The supreme words of
forgiveness came from Christ’s own lips as he was dying on
the Cross: “Father, forgive them. They do not know what they
are doing.”
On Friday, 9 December, there will be a service of
Reconciliation in the parish church at 8.00 p.m. following
evening Mass.
As a parish we will have the opportunity to acknowledge
together that we are all in need of forgiveness and that we also
need to forgive. Let us pray that this gathering will be a lovely
moment in the life of our parish, when we will claim again
our own life for Christ and give back to others, even perhaps
to members of our own families, the life we may have taken
from them by our lack of forgiveness.

remembers the WYD trip to Madrid last August
It was one of those unknown hours, 2 am, when I got up.
The grogginess was soon lost to an excited buzz, the penny
had dropped, I was going to World Youth Day this morning.
The bus and plane trip seemed only a few minutes because
at what still seemed 2:30 am, I was setting foot on Spanish
soil.
My name is Ronan Maher and I travelled to WYD 2011
in Madrid. It was a trip that completely surpassed any
expectations I ever had. From coping with severe heat, 41
degrees on some days, to acting as an interpreter on a crowded
train, I enjoyed every minute of it. The experience of meeting
so many young people from so many different nations, all
together for the one purpose was truly amazing. To see nearly
1 million people sit in open air, during a thunder storm,
to watch the Holy Father is something else indeed. There
isn’t enough space for me to write everything but I’ll write
this; the trip was inspirational, from prayer to hikes and the
friends I’ve made is something I will not forget.

My Journey from Faith Friends to
Parish Pastoral Minister
This month we welcome Donal Mahon to the Parish
team. Donal has been involved in various parish
activities over the years while studying Pastoral Ministry.
Originally from Wexford, he lives in Newbridge with his
wife and two daughters. We are delighted to have him with
us on the Team and wish him every blessing and support.
He introduces himself as follows:
For many of us, the mention of Faith Friends is like a blast
from the past! For me it was the beginning of a journey
that has led me to my new role here in the parish as Parish
Pastoral Minister. Faith Friends was a programme run in
the parish here over 10 years ago that involved parents with
their childrens’ First Communion preparation.
Involvement in Faith Friends was the beginning of a
journey, not just for my daughter, but for me. It helped
me to realise that my own understanding of faith had not
moved on since my Confirmation. I attended all the usual
religious events such as Sunday Mass, Christmas & Easter
ceremonies but a deeper sense of faith was not there.
I then began a 10 year journey that took me from a
‘Preparing for Ministry’ course to a BA (Hons) in Pastoral
Ministry, at present I am doing
a course in Catechetics that
is helping me fine-tune my
skills for working in the area of
Adult Faith Development.
Our faith journey is never
ending: Every day we awaken, we begin another part of
that journey. So often it can be filled with grief, hardship,
disappointments, and we think we are alone on the journey
but we never are. God never leaves our side even though it
might seem that way sometimes. To me, God just stands
back and gives us the space we need.
In St. John’s Gospel, chapter 1:38 Jesus asks “what are you
looking for?” Ten years ago I heard these words and asked
for what I wanted. Today I am living the answer in my role
as husband, parent, parish pastoral minister and friend.
My new role as a Parish Pastoral Minister is to help others
to find their answer to Jesus question: “What are you
looking for?”

light free us from all that is darkness in our lives, and may

Apart from its great
religious significance,
Christmas and the breathless
excitement of a visit from
Santa with his reindeer and
sleigh is a particularly magic
time for children and those adults
among us who allow our minds to
enter the spirit of the occasion.
Sadly, however, the magic is in danger of
dissipation when doubts start creeping into little minds – fuelled
by listening to older companions – about the very existence of
Santa Claus. Is there really a Santa Claus, they ask ?
Well, I can reassure them and everyone else who doubts –
THERE REALLY IS A SANTA CLAUS. How can I be so sure?
Because my Daddy met him on the bus to Kildare and the proof
of the (Christmas) pudding is in the eating !
When I was a very little boy, many, many years ago, living in Cut
Bush, the first present I remember from Santa was a wheelbarrow
and many’s the happy day I spent filling the barrow with stones,
depositing them in a corner of the garden, going back for more
and so on until I had assembled a really big heap. In hindsight,
what a smart man my Dad was to get his garden cleaned up in
such a pleasurable way !
But the one Christmas I remember better than any was a couple
of years later when I had my heart set on a game of Ludo (a
board game played with different coloured markers and dice).
I wrote off to Santa with my wish but, in the meantime, didn’t

walked the couple of miles across the plains to
the Sunday matinee whenever we could get the
fourpence admission to “the gods”.
There it was - and Santa or no Santa (I
obviously didn’t trust him 100%) - I couldn’t wait to get my
hands on it. To get the half-crown to buy it, I sacrificed a
couple of matinees, scrounged thruppence here and sixpence
there from Ma, Granny, and Aunt Lil until, on Christmas Eve,
I proudly marched home with it under me oxter. I couldn’t
wait to show it to Ma but, to my great dismay, she was far from
pleased. She gave out to me something fierce (most unlike her)
telling me that Santa was bringing me the Ludo as I had asked
him for it. When I protested and said I would leave a note for
him requesting Snakes & Ladders instead, she said it was too
late as Harry Rafferty, my next door pal, was getting the Snakes
& Ladders.
How could she be so sure, I asked. “BECAUSE” she said without
batting an eyelid,
“YOUR DADDY MET SANTA CLAUS ON THE BUS TO
KILDARE YESTERDAY AND HE TOLD HIM”.
I woke up Christmas morning to find that Santa had indeed
brought me the Ludo – Mammy said that at least I was the only
child in the Bush, maybe even in the whole wide world, who
had two games of Ludo that Christmas – and meeting up with
my pal, Harry, I found out that Santa had duly brought him the
Snakes & Ladders. Irrefutable proof that Daddy had spoken in
person to Santa Claus on the bus to Kildare !
I had no further doubts but, for those who still need convincing,

Assembling the crib was part of the Christmas ritual in my
house; in fact it signalled the beginning of the Christmas
season. it didn’t really take much - a cardboard box, a black
plastic bag, a tin of fake snow and the well worn figures.
The more mis-shapen the box the better because it gave
the appearance of a cave; the black bag was carefully placed
to cover the cardboard, and the spray on snow covered the
places where the sellotape fastened the black plastic to the
box.
My sister initiated, and took charge of the project, each year.
She was the eldest of seven children, and as is often the case
for the eldest in a large family, a lot of responsibility rested
on her shoulders. It was only to be expected that the task
of the crib would be under her capable direction.
Praying the Rosary as a family was a daily feature of our
home life. During the Christmas season the crib became a
focus for our prayer as we knelt around it with our beads.

year. House cleaning was always a sign
for us that someone was coming to visit.
The fact that the biggest clean up came

THE MASS:
BECOME WHAT YOU RECEIVE
Going to Holy Communion is a twofold action. It involves
receiving and becoming. St. Augustine often instructed
his congregations, "Receive the Body of Christ and become
what you receive”. In receiving Holy Communion we ponder
on the depth of Christ’s love for us. In becoming the Body of
Christ we respond to that immense love.
So much of modern society defines us by what we do or by
what we have.
What do you do for a living? What is your income?
What kind of car do your drive?
Communion defines us by
‘who we are becoming’ –
the kind of person we are
becoming. Receiving Holy
Communion should lead
us to ask of ourselves –
what kind of person am I
becoming?
St. Paul, in his famous
St. Augustine
passage on love in his first
letter to the people of
Corinth in Greece, describes
for us the kind of person we should strive to be. As you read
his words replace the word ‘love’ with the word ‘Jesus’,
Love is always patience and kind;
Love is never jealous;
Love is never boastful or conceited;
Love is never rude or selfish;
Love does not take offence and is not resentful.
Love takes no pleasure in other people’s sins but delights in
the truth;
Love is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope and to endure
whatever ends. (1 Cor. 13: 4-7)
Imagine meeting such a person as Jesus. Imagine becoming
such a person! Read it again and replace Jesus’ name with your
own name!
Don’t be discouraged. Many of us may not reach such heights
of personal growth, self-control and inner integrity but isn’t
it worth striving for? Maybe that is why St. Paul begins this
section of his letter, “Be ambitious for the higher gifts”.
Wanting to become such a person is the first step and even if
we can live only moments of such love in our lives then all the
effort would not be in vain. However, remember even such

can achieve by our
own will. It requires
the ‘indwelling of
the Holy Spirit’ in
our heart and soul.
The ‘becoming’ always returns to the
‘receiving’ – receiving His Body; receiving His Love in
Holy Communion enables us to live such love. So the next
time you put out your hand or your tongue to receive Holy
Communion, know what you are asking for and know what
you are receiving.
Commissioning sending Out: Announcements
Finally we prepare to go back to that world in which we will
live for the coming week. Strengthened by this Eucharist, we
are better prepared to take up the burdens of our daily lives.
There may be announcements at this time which remind us of
important activities coming up in the parish. The priest again
says, “The Lord be with you” - the ritual phrase serves now as
a farewell.
Blessing and Dismissal
We bow our heads to receive a blessing. As the priest names
the Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - we make the Sign
of the Cross. The priest or deacon then dismisses the assembly:
“Go in peace.” And we give our liturgical “yes” by saying,
“Thanks be to God.”
Living the eucharist in the world
We leave the assembly and the church building but we carry
something with us. What happens in our lives during the week
gives deeper meaning to the ritual actions we have celebrated at
Mass, whether it’s family, work with poor or just plain work.
It is only in relation to our daily lives that the full meaning of
the ritual actions of the Mass becomes clear to us.

Feastday: December 12th
Missionaries who first came to Mexico with the
conquistadors had little success in the beginning.
After nearly a generation, only a few hundred Native
Mexicans had converted to the Christian faith.
Whether they simply did not understand what the
missionaries had to offer or whether they resented
these people who made them slaves, Christianity
was not popular among the native people.
Then in 1531 miracles began to happen. Jesus'
own mother appeared to humble Juan Diego. The
signs - of the roses, of the uncle miraculously cured of
a deadly illness, and especially of her beautiful image on
Juan's mantle - convinced the people there was something to
be considered in Christianity. Within a short time, six million
Native Mexicans had themselves baptized as Christians.

12 years. I understand there is a new incentive for me to
become a ‘tenant purchaser. What are the details?
Answer
There is a new Fixed Term Tenant Purchase Scheme
which will remain open until the end of 2011. If you have
been a local authority tenant for over 10 years you can buy
your home at a discount from current market prices. The
maximum discount available is 45% on the market price of
your home. (This discount is based on a 3% discount for
each year of tenancy up to a maximum of 15 years.) You
must also pay stamp duty on the purchase. This is fixed at
€100 for all sales under the Scheme.

we learn two important lessons, one of faith and one of
understanding.
The first lesson is that God has chosen Mary to lead
us to Jesus. No matter what critics may say of the
devotion of Mexicans (and Mexican descendants) to
Our Lady of Guadalupe, they owe their Christianity
to her influence. If it were not for her, they would not
know her son, and so they are eternally grateful.
The second lesson we take from Mary herself. Mary
appeared to Juan Diego not as a European madonna
but as a beautiful Aztec princess speaking to him in his
own Aztec language. If we want to help someone appreciate
the gospel we bring, we must appreciate the culture and the
mentality in which they live their lives. By understanding
them, we can help them to understand and know Christ. Our
Lady of Guadalupe is patron of the Americas.
If you wish to apply for a mortgage loan to your local
authority you will have to show (with documentary
evidence) that you have been refused a loan by two
financial institutions and your income must be below a
certain amount. You must also state the amount of the loan
refused. If you wish to sell your house within 20 years of
purchase you must get the consent of your local authority.
The new Fixed Term Tenant Purchase Scheme does
not replace the existing Tenant Purchase Scheme which
remains in place until June 2012.
The Fixed Term Tenant purchase scheme is open for
applications only until the end of December 2011.

BOOK OF GREAT SPORTING MEMORIES
Newbridge resident, Lorcán O’Rourke has published a book
of Great Sporting Memories – from local club to Olympic
Games in aid of Chernobyl Children International (CCI) which
was launched by Jimmy Magee at Newbridge Credit Union on
29 November.
The publication contains 72 stories written by many of Ireland’s
best-known sports persons and sports journalists. Among them
are Kildare footballers Johnny Doyle, Dermot Earley and
Ronan Sweeney, leading horse trainer Dermot Weld and Eddie
Harty who recalls the glory of his Aintree Grand National win
in 1969 aboard Highland Wedding. Jamie Heaslip remembers
the day he was selected on the British and Irish Lions touring
side.
