WHAT IS IT: The City of Ardmore is replacing water lines in a portion of the NW part of the city. The
project began in November and has a finish date slated for March.
HEALDTON — In what appeared to be a celebration
of Festivus, an airing of grievances highlighted
a meeting between board members of the Healdton
Industrial Authority and Oklahoma Department of
Correction Southeast District Supervisor Margaret
Johnson Friday.
At the end of the meeting, one thing was clear. It's
hard to find good help.
Herb Collier, HIA General Manager was pleased with
the outcome in that his crews will be filled out.
line being replaced.
Geurin said the city is using PVC C-900 to replace
existing steel pipe and the cost is $681,837.
Funding for the project comes from the water
distribution budget and the GAPS sales tax.
Geurin said any services that need to be cut
off would be done quickly as the new pipe is
brought online. Once the line is laid, it will be
pressure tested along with other tests. Upon
completion of testing, any necessary taps will be
made.
ECONOMIC BOOST
Billions in gas drilling
royalties transform lives
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Private
landowners are reaping billions of
dollars in royalties each year from the
boom in natural gas drilling, transforming
lives and livelihoods even as
the windfall provides only a modest
boost to the broader economy.
In Pennsylvania alone, royalty payments
could top $1.2 billion for 2012,
according to an Associated Press
analysis that looked at state tax information,
production records and
estimates from the National Association
of Royalty Owners.
For some landowners, the unexpected
royalties have made a big
difference.
"We used to have to put stuff on
credit cards. It was basically living
from paycheck to paycheck," said
Shawn Georgetti, who runs a family
dairy farm in Avella, about 30 miles
southwest of Pittsburgh.
Natural gas production has boomed
in many states over the past few years
as advances in drilling opened up
vast reserves buried in deep shale
rock, such as the Marcellus formation
in Pennsylvania and the Barnett
in Texas.
Nationwide, the royalty owners
association estimates, natural gas
royalties totaled $21 billion in 2010,
the most recent year for which it
has done a full analysis. Texas paid
YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) — Two people were rescued Sunday
when their single-engine plane crashed and sank into
the icy Hudson River off Yonkers, authorities said.
The small plane was carrying a man and a woman on
a sightseeing trip, and crashed about 5:20 p.m., Yonkers
Police Lt. Phil Collins said. The two were wearing life
vests and were able to get out of the plane before it sank,
Collins said.
"The primary objective
of the meeting was to get
our second crew back," Collier
said. "I was pleased the
will just see what happens. I
did get informed I will have
three guys starting Monday
and as soon as some new
The HIA asked for the
meeting in an effort to address
problems with filling
out its two work crews and
other issues. The contract
between the DOC and
HIA calls for 14 workers
involved in the Prisoner
Public Works Projects. The
DOC has been unable to fill
the 14 spots and the HIA
felt a lack of support from
the Carter County Community
Work Center was
a factor.
Johnson said the main
reason is today's inmates
do not have the necessary
skills and work ethic as
when the program started.
One problem is legislation,
which allows offenders to
reach the work center level
with more time remaining
on their sentence. Another
reason is the inmate's background.
"These are more than
Johnson said.
Doug McCallister, chief
of security for the work
center said most of the inmates
only know how to
carry guns and sling dope.
Johnson also said the basic
skills of being able to operate
a weed eater are skills
that need to be developed
on the job. And that falls
on the supervisors. And in
some cases, the inmates
have no intention of re-entering
society and working,
particularly the younger
ones.
Another problem was
the demands of working
on an HIA crew. Johnson
said that Collier is more
demanding of his crews in
the amount of work that
takes place. Offenders talk
among themselves apparently
and attempt to find
work crews in which demands
are less. There are
also offenders that are injured
and it can take up
to a month for them to be
cleared McCallister said.
The resolution to the
meeting was the HIA will
receive offenders to fill out a
second crew, but no promises
can be made that they
will be quality workers.
'We can give you offenders
said. "But I can't guarantee
you they will have
