Dear Friends,
It was a pleasure to welcome you in Budapest, the “pearl” of the Danube, where 820 participants
from 46 countries gathered together at the 30 th World Nut and Dried Fruit Congress,
the annual event of the global nut and dried fruit food industry.
The conference program offered over a dozen working sessions, covering topics of market
dynamics, status quo and prospects, and the most relevant scientific news and regulatory
issues related to the industry. Over 60 specialists in the fields of production, trade, distribution,
health, nutrition and food law from all over the world presented their views on key
industry topics. Traditional working groups were replaced by Round Tables which instead
of reviewing supply and demand statistics, the new format focused on marketing and consumption
trends and allowed an interactive discussion.
In addition to providing a forum for the industry, the Congress also gathered international
companies in the Exhibition Area, where the latest equipment, innovations and products in
the nut and dried fruit sector were displayed.
We invite you to enjoy the highlights and the best photographs of the Congress and thank
all participants and sponsors for making this congress possible.
We look forward to seeing you next year in Singapore, next May 18-20, 2012.
Best Regards,
Golden Nut Award
Budapest XXX World Nut & Dried Fruit Congress
Tesco Stores Limited
The INC recognized Tesco Stores Limited with
the Corporate Golden Nut Award for its significant
contribution to the nut and dried fruit industry.
Tesco Stores Limited operates as a retailer of food,
non-food, and retailing services. Traditionally a
UK grocery retailer, Tesco’s strategy in the last 15
years has been centred on growing its non-food
business, expanding its brand into retailing services
& developing an international business. Alongside
their Traditional grocery business, Tesco now
provides customers with a wide range of products
& services, such as financial & legal services,
health food shops, opticians & pharmacies, photo
centres, telecoms & garden centres. In addition, it
represents 50% of the UK online grocery shopping
market.
Founded in 1919 and based in Cheshunt, the
United Kingdom, the company now operates in
14 countries worldwide, China, Czech Republic,
Hungary, India, Japan, Malaysia, Poland, Ireland,
Slovakia, South Korea, Thailand, Turkey, UK and
USA. It operates over 5,008 stores worldwide, employing
472,000 people. Its strong results over the
past years have been achieved through a constant
focus on what matters most to customers in challenging
times worldwide.
Tesco Clubcard, the biggest worldwide customer
loyalty scheme, has been centric to Tesco’s customer
focus.
In the last 10 years Tesco has considerably improved
and enlarged its range of nut and dried fruit
products adding both value and product innovation,
as well as developing a strong seasonal business.
Today, Tesco provides to the consumer more
than 400 different nut and dried fruit lines.
Goretti Guasch presented the new INC goals and
main activities the INC will carry out within the Strategic
Plan of Actions.
INC Report
of Activities
By Goretti Guasch, INC Executive Director
NEW GOALS
The new INC Goals include the development of strategic actions to deal with:
• Environmental sustainability initiatives associated with social behaviour and a
healthy product image perceived by consumers. This goal defined under Sustainability,
involves to carry over Sustainability actions to develop a Guidance on
Good Facts on sustainable production to assess and improve the environmental
impact and profile on nuts and dried fruits, to gain competitive advantage.
• Nuts and Gastronomy, emphasizing the importance of the use of nuts and
dried fruits in the kitchen of the best restaurants worldwide. Under Gastronomy
is meant to develop actions to emphasize tree nuts are tasty, natural,
flavored, a delightful food and fat free. The project involves the creation of an
INC Guide Book, like the Michelin Guide book, but with nut stars, to give it
to those restaurants using nuts and dried fruits in their recipes.
• Nuts and Sports, to promote the healthy properties of nuts into the sports
field. This is an important potential area that would recognize the industry
as the supplier of the healthy energy food that helps them become better
and healthier players.
• School Programs to promote the consumption of nuts and dried fruits
among children, by actively participating in School Fruit Scheme Programs
and have nuts included under the same category of fruits & vegetables.
NEW ACTIVITIES
11th EUROPEAN CONGRESS OF NUTRITION
Continued research is vital for our industry and the INC keeps the commitment to promote
scientific studies, education and dissemination.
With this in mind, the INC will take part in the European Congress of Nutrition from 24 to 29
October 2011, in Madrid, where over 2000 scientists, health professionals and researchers
from over 76 countries will learn about the latest findings and developments in the fields
of health and nutrition.
The INC session will take place on Friday 28th of October and it will include keynote researchers
from Europe, USA and Canada in the field of cardiovascular diseases, obesity
and diabetes.
We believe that this will be a great opportunity to spread the health benefits of nuts to the
largest group of health influencers, researchers and specialized media.
NEW: INC PAVILION AT SIAL PARIS 2012
Given the success of INC’s participation in international food & trade exhibitions and due
to the demand of the industry to exhibit under a common umbrella, the INC will provide
a meeting area for the INC members for those wishing to participate in the main food
exhibitions.
The first edition will take place in the SIAL exhibition in October 2012, where the INC pavilion
will consist on individual booths, for which will provide meeting facilities, catering and
storage service and transportation to the exhibition.
Our objective is to be the reference for the Industry and its Meeting point at the most relevant
international exhibitions.
INC HOME
The new headquarters will be strategically located on a 4,500 sq meters site in a new
Technology Park, located next to the city airport. The Techno Park is an international cluster
of health and nutrition research. The park offers up to 50,000 sq meters of infrastructural
INC
development in several categories, such as healthcare, nutrition, pharmaceutics, and agriculture.
Within this context the new INC Headquarters will also have a surface of 2,500 square
meters of Arboretum with nut and fruit trees, a place for visitors to observe and study a
variety of trees, including 12 species (4-5 trees per specie), in collaboration with the Institute
for Food and Agricultural Research and Technology.
Over 36 Sponsors have already signed on to support the New INC Home, who will be
rewarded with a brick with their name at the donators’ wall of the building.
· The per-capita consumption in the USA is more than 11 times
that of the per-capita consumption in China and 18 times that
· The crops of 2010/2011 were below average. Since demand
was badly damaged in Europe by the Chinese Pine Nuts quality
problem, the price dropped dramatically since the end of 2010.
From US$29,000/mt in October 2010 to US$17,000/MT in May
2011 for good quality grade A Red Pine variety 650 count.
· The crops of 2011/2012 will be very good. Due to the increas-
Round
ing charge for the forest preservation from the governments
in China and Russia, the greatly increased cost for labor and
transportation, the rapidly growing demand in China, and the
possibly recovering demands from overseas markets after the
better quality control takes in place, it is difficult for the price of
new crops to go below US$15,000/MT.
Symposium
Nuts and Dried Fruits
on Health and Disease
In this sense, Ms. Ternus outlined the priorities of research for
the coming years (diabetes, heart disease, body weight regulation,
and phytochemicals in the disease prevention) and the steps taken
by the INC NREF in the knowledge of nuts and the importance of
its consumption through the sponsorship of projects, publications,
workshops and its website.
To sum up, all speakers concluded that high evidence of healthy
properties of tree nuts have been demonstrated, however further
research is needed in order to better demonstrate the effect of nut
consumption on cancer prevention and the metabolic healthy effects
of dried fruit consumption.
Presented the results of different studies showing the healthy benefits of dried fruits. This
food group is very rich in different types of vegetable fiber, potassium and phenolic compounds
with antioxidant properties. After revising the most important scientific published
papers, he concluded that dried fruit has a number of potential health benefits, promoting
laxation, decreasing cholesterol and improving blood glucose response to meal. Dr. Gallaher
also showed the results of a study conducted by his research team demonstrating the
healthy effect of dried plums consumption on inflammation, oxidative stress, ant arteriosclerotic
plaque. Furthermore, the association between dried fruit consumption and decreased
risk of osteoporosis was addressed at the end of his presentation.
Talked about “Nut Consumption and Energy Balance”. Based on different international studies
she supported the idea that nuts are a nutrient rich food that fit naturally into a healthy
well balanced diet. She showed that an inverse relationship between nut consumption and
body mass index or diabetes had been demonstrated in several epidemiologic studies. Prof.
Tapsell presented the results recently published by her team as regards the effect of a meal
supplemented with nuts or not on the increase in lipid oxidation during a period of 8 hours in
postprandial state using indirect calorimetry. She concluded that “there may be advantages
to achieving energy balance from choosing nuts over other foods in the diet”.
Supported the idea that dietary patterns are associated with cancer risk. Scientific studies
have shown that people ascribed to Western dietary patterns have an increased risk of cancer
mortality; on the contrary, a prudent dietary pattern reduces mortality. Generally, the Western
dietary pattern is based on high consumption of saturated and trans fatty acids and sugar, but
also refined-grain cereals, processed meat and fried foods. Prudent dietary pattern is considered
when high fruits, vegetables, whole-grains, low-fat dairy and nuts are consumed. Several
epidemiological studies have demonstrated that frequent nut consumption is associated to a
lower incidence of some cancers, such as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, prostate cancer or
colon cancer. Dr. Emenaker exposed that further research is needed to identify components,
mechanisms of action, cancer sites and genetic susceptibilities for cancer prevention.
Presented the published PREDIMED results in relation to diabetes and metabolic syndrome, a
constellation of metabolic derangements (abdominal obesity, hypertension, insulin resistance
and dyslipidemia) conferring a high risk of cardiovascular disease. Dr. Ros concluded that a
Mediterranean-type Diet supplemented with tree nuts can be a useful tool in preventing Metabolic
Syndrome and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
Supermarkets Panel
22
An introduction to global retail marketing
On Saturday, 21st May 2011, the Congress held the panel “How to
Market Nuts in Supermarkets throughout Europe and more…”. Mr.
Pino Calcagni, Congress Co-Chairman, presented the key facts on
worldwide nuts and dried fruits consumption, as well as the main
challenges to be faced in the path that leads to increased sales.
Mr. Calcagni highlighted that “If only 50% of world’s population eat
nuts and dried fruits, our industry would have 3.9 billion consumers”.
Likewise, Mr. Calcagni reviewed the top market categories
for nut products such as chocolate, snack nuts, sweet biscuits,
cakes, energy bars and bread products. Throughout Europe, the
number of new snacks launches containing nuts increased significantly
during 2009.
Mr. Calcagni presented the keynote speakers of the panel: Mr. Raffael
Li Preti, Senior Manager of Fruits and Vegetables at Delhaize
Belgium, and Mr. James Waddy, Senior Buying Manager Produce
of the Fruit Team at TESCO Stores, both representatives of leading
supermarket chains.
Delhaize Beligum is a market leader in sales of fruit thanks to its
wide network of points of sale (2,800 stores and 138,000 associates).
In this sense, Delhaize has recently launched the so-called
“three T” campaign which divides products in three groups: discount,
traditional distribution and premium line.
Mr. Li Preti outlined that dry fruit is an impulse buying -it is not
usually included in the buying list; it is necessary to give visibility to
these products, and the growth of the industry will be supported
by the increase in promotion of the health benefits of nuts and
dried fruits.
Tesco Stores Limited operates as a retailer of food, non-food and
retailing services. It operates over 5,008 stores worldwide, employing
472,000 people. It strong results over the past years have
been achieved through a constant focus on what matters most to
customers in changing times worldwide.
Mr. James Waddy, Tesco Stores, stressed that multi-format retailing
is expanding worldwide (hyper-markets, traditional supermarkets,
dot.com retailing, convenience format and high street), as the
digital era is transforming the way consumers and companies behave.
He identified the potential growth nuts and dried fruit market
where range is the key platform to take advantage, providing flexible
merchandising solutions with a customer market programme,
namely multimedia technology; social networking; coupon’s; recipes
and dot.com.
Panel: “How to market
nuts in supermarkets
and more...”
Innovation
Awards
The INC Celebrates New Ideas and Innovative Approaches
Participants at the World Nut and Dried Fruit Congress had the opportunity not only to share experience and network but also to get
enriched with new ideas and state-of-the-art initiatives in a new Innovation Awards: a new product contest that selected the best new
product and service, the ceremony of which was held during the traditional Gala Dinner and Ball, on Sunday 22nd May, 2011, in the
InterContinental Hotel.
For this first edition of the Innovation Awards the INC established two categories: Best New Product, the winner of which was Mariani
Packing Company’s TouchLock (USA), a Velcro®-like micro-hook closure system, and Best New Service, the winner of which was Jas
Trading BV’s Nut Quality Services (Netherlands), which controls quality of cashew kernels without the use of toxic chemicals, and provides
new bulk packaging material.
Best New Service:
Jas Trading BV’s Nut Quality Services
Jas Trading has extended the services and quality control related
to fumigation treatment, cleaning and packaging of cashew kernels
in Vietnam. Nut Quality Services control insects without the
use of toxic chemicals. Cashews are cleaned, packaged and inspected
before export to its final destination. Secondly, the use of
bulk packaging material reduces losses during shipment, reduces
the use of packaging materials and cost by saving much extra
handling at point of arrival.
Best New Product:
Mariani Packing Company’s TouchLock
Mariani Packing Company’s TouchLock, a Velcro®-like microhook
closure system, allows consumers to simply touch to lock and
close their dried fruit bag. Mariani has launched the TouchLock
feature on all stand-up gusseted packaging. It does not have to be
perfectly aligned to seal properly. TouchLock’s micro-hook, selfgripping
fastener firmly seals the package and maintains product
freshness.
The INC wants to thank all the companies for submitting their products and services for the 2011 Innovation Awards, and invites INC
members to apply for next year’s Awards, in the form of new products, ideas, services, or business models.
