Rohm and Haas creates<br />
Korean flat-panel film JV<br />
As part of its efforts to create a flat-panel<br />
display business, Rohm and Haas Co.<br />
(Philadelphia) has started a joint venture<br />
with Korean firm SKC Inc. (Seoul),<br />
wherein SKC will spin off its display technologies<br />
business into a separate unit<br />
owned 51% by Rohm and Haas. Rohm<br />
and Haas previously purchased the<br />
process chemicals and optical display<br />
films business of Eastman Kodak.<br />
Sales for the joint venture are forecast<br />
to be $300 million in its first year, with<br />
Rohm and Haas investing $190 million.<br />
Products will include specialty display<br />
films for LCD and plasma displays, as<br />
well as pigment dispersions, TFT photoresists,<br />
and color filter chrome patterning.<br />
According to the Freedonia Group<br />
(Cleveland, OH), global demand for electronic<br />
display materials will grow 12%<br />
annually through 2008, as cathode ray<br />
tube (CRT) monitors and televisions are<br />
increasingly replaced with flat panels.<br />
New PET<br />
supply for<br />
North America<br />
PET supplier M&G Group (Tortona,<br />
Italy) is expanding PET production in the<br />
U.S. with an 800,000-tonnes/yr plant to<br />
be built at a still-undisclosed location.<br />
The company claims that PTA feedstock<br />
supplies have already been secured,<br />
enabling startup of the facility in the first<br />
half of 2009 with an output of 650,000<br />
tonnes/yr. In other news from the company,<br />
it plans to debottleneck both its West<br />
Demand for PET bottles is increasing, leading<br />
M&G to expand U.S. output.<br />
