within our own communities, as well as at the International level. The International World Understanding Committee facilitates world understanding efforts throughout our organization by means of education and increasing our awareness of available opportunities. Excellent articles are published in the Kappan about travel to foreign destinations, as well as understanding ourselves and who we are in relationship to other cultures. The Alpha Delta Kappa- International Teacher Education program is a stellar example of world understanding as we interact with the students who are in the United States for one to two years to study at our universities and colleges. The Alpha Delta Kappa School in Vietnam, funded through the Foundation and Project S.A.V.E., is now a reality. Our fourth star reflects from each of its points Membership, Leadership and Communication. Limitless stars are required in this constellation. The International Membership Committee guides, directs and inspires; however, membership is everyone’s concern. As a result of my challenge issued for each state, province, or nation to begin one new chapter before the end of the biennium, several new chapters have been formed. There is still time to get the process started before the end of the biennium. I would like to commend Linda Chambers, International Vice President for Membership, and the International Membership Committee for their reflections of dedication and commitment. International Chapter created a document, “Establishing a New Chapter”; IMC wrote a new document, “New Chapters Excellence in Action,” which contains outstanding points for existing chapters. Both of these documents are posted on the International website. Our final reflection is a star that was first viewed at a distance but is evolving—21st Century Relevance. The advances we have made in the use of technology have definitely impacted our organization, its efficiency and effectiveness. We must continue to utilize every possible technological advancement to attract younger outstanding women educators who are the future of Alpha Delta Kappa. All of us in this ballroom and others not present have a star-studded event for July 13-16, 2011. Plan now for your region to have stellar attendance for the 27th International Convention Ø
International Vice President, Southwest Region Pat Pursell in Chicago, Illinois. My work for the Convention began three years ago in San Diego! My thoughts to each of you: (1) Continue a service attitude; (2) Focus on priorities; (3) Understand the soft stuff—recognition and praise light the way for our members; (4) Embrace humor and optimism; (5) Excellence is not an act; it’s a habit; (6) Take risks; (7) Reinforce core values; (8) Earn trust; (9) Take action; and finally (10) Aim for the heart because—“They don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” One of my favorite Willow Tree figurines is the “Bright Star—Reflecting a Light from Within.” As I look out at you and meet other Alpha Delta Kappa sisters as I travel, the star qualities from within each of you are reflected. YOU are the “Stars Reflecting Excellence.” I would like to close with this poem, Aim for a Star by Helen A. Marshall: Aim for a star! Never be satisfied With a life that is less than the best; Failure lies only in not having tried— In keeping the soul suppressed. Aim for a star! Look up and away, And follow its beckoning beam. Make each Tomorrow a better Today— And do not be afraid to dream. Aim for a star! And keep your sights high! With a heart full of faith within, Your feet on the ground, and your eyes on the sky, Alpha Delta Kappa sisters, You will continue to reflect your star from within. Thank you for welcoming me three years ago and at each regional conference. I recognize the starry roles you play and commend your dedication to Alpha Delta Kappa.
