alongside other teachers and
leaders in education who wanted
to grow professionally by promoting
excellence in teaching
and learning.
I am extremely grateful for
the opportunities I have each
and every day to pay forward a
precious gift one special teacher
shared with me: a passion for
learning. I work with administrators,
teachers, and children in
my role as science curriculum
and instruction specialist for 13
PK-12 schools where my dreams
of transforming classrooms into
places of optimized learning are
blossoming. Classrooms where
students are thinking critically,
discussing ideas with each other
and practicing how to collect
evidence to support their ideas
are becoming a reality because
of the hard work and dedication
of all the team players who care
about the welfare of our children
and the future of our planet.
The Excellence in Education
Award has provided
an opportunity to reflect
on the many gifts of my
teaching career. Now
starting my 38th year
of teaching, I remain
energized and focused
on creating meaningful
classroom experiences
for all students each day. Additionally,
I truly appreciate the
colleagues and students who have
inspired me to share my knowledge
of family and consumer
sciences, serve as an educational
leader, and support my community.
Teaching is sharing.
State and local career and
technical education departments
have provided teacherleader
opportunities throughout
my career. Working with colleagues
to develop curriculum
guidelines, implement curriculum
reform, participate in
student-led community service
projects and design small learning
communities has enabled
me to remain current in my
field and better serve students
and parents. With my master’s
program and thesis through
Seattle Pacific University, I
focused on exploring and understanding
brain development and
learning styles. It made sense
to be well grounded in both
subject matter and effective
instructional methods. Further
training in the Myers-Briggs
Type Indicator led to teaching
adult continuing education
classes and workshops. Teaching
is learning.
Doctoral studies and dissertation
through Seattle University
enabled me to expand my servant-leadership
role. Believing
schools have the unique ability
to provide a continuum of care
for students, my dissertation focused
on social service through
a statewide study of extended
day programs for elementary
students. Although I completed
a principal internship, I found
I needed classroom
interactions to
renew my spirit. My
constituents are my
students and I am
best able to support
them as a classroom
teacher. Teaching is
leading.
Local educational
reform brought challenges
and opportunities.
Three years
ago I was part of a small learning
community in which I was
thrilled to build a teacher preparation
course of study. When
I aligned careers in education
and child development classes
Educational Excellence in Action
with local community colleges,
students were then able to
earn affordable college credits.
Teaching is caring.
As with most teachers, I
endeavor to meet more than just
the educational needs of students.
Career and technical education
has a strong community
service component that is part
of all my classes. Accordingly,
the heart of ADK, altruism, has
expanded my outreach through
projects such as Blankets and
Books for young parents, St.
Joseph’s House for low-income
families, and Jared Boxes for
hospitalized children. Teaching
is giving back.
As I reflect on my career,
seeking and embracing change
as an opportunity to serve, learn
and lead have been consistent
themes. Touching and influencing
the “eye of the storm,” which
is a classroom of young people
growing towards adulthood,
is powerful and energizing. I
started my teaching career
committed to my field of study
and craft. I became a stronger
educator by focusing on young
people, working synergistically
with colleagues and supporting
my community. Teaching is
heartfelt.
