Recognizing Excellence for Doing Good The purpose of the 2009-2011 Recognizing Excellence for Doing Good program is to recognize Alpha Delta Kappa members who are making a difference in everyday ways in their communities and in their profession outside of ADK. To find out more and to nominate someone, visit the International website. Qualified nominees are added to the website as they are received. Mary Kay Alberg, Kentucky Theta Chapter Nominated by Davalene Burch A retired Jefferson County administrator/teacher, Mary Kay teaches weekly ESL classes, counsels weekly at “A Woman’s Choice,” and coordinates a woman’s bible study along with being a choir member at Highview Baptist Church. Arlene Alexander, Texas Beta Zeta Chapter Nominated by her chapter sisters Arlene’s community activities include serving as a Eucharistic Minister for St. Pius X Catholic Church. Claire Appling, Massachusetts Mu Chapter Nominated by Vera Rebman Claire is a member of her local Red Cross, the Brockton Area Medical Reserve Core, and the Brockton Emergency Management Agency. She is involved in Brockton’s Chinese teacher exchange program, Brockton First Night and Brockton After Dark. In 2006, she received the Brockton Woman of the Year Award. Joan Arnott, Ontario Epsilon Chapter Nominated by Peggy Dromisky Joan is the patient navigator, who books all flights and grants for cancer patients at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. At the Tamarack Cancer Lodge she greets, registers and books travel for the out-oftown patients. She assists in procuring wigs, turbans, scarves and prosthetics and acts as an assistant to hair loss specialist Kelly Ruberto. Dorean Barnes, California Beta Rho Chapter Nominated by Carole Taylor Dorean is always helping everyone she comes in contact with. She has helped many of our sisters when they have been ill driving them to doctor appointments and providing meals. Pat Baugh, Texas Gamma Pi Chapter Nominated by Barbara Rodgers Pat and her husband Dale have served as El Paso’s official Santa and Mrs. Claus. Committed to their mission of spreading cheer in their red-and-white suits, they volunteer at hospitals, nursing centers, schools and many non-profit organizations. 52 Excellence in Action in Altruism Christina Blank, Illinois Sigma Chapter Nominated by Mildred Anne “Mimi” Jones Volunteers at the Methodist Church, “Angels on Assignment,” in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Julia Bodenhamer, Texas Delta Beta Chapter Nominated by Eileen Hult Julia’s daughter was stationed in Afghanistan. The chapter sent “Kisses” and candy to her troop on Julia’s recommendation. Her daughter was visiting home and came to our chapter meeting. She spoke about her assignment. Ruth Byars, Illinois Sigma Chapter Nominated by Mildred Anne “Mimi” Jones Charter member Ruth volunteers at Mount Vernon-CrossRoads Hospital in the Women’s Auxiliary. She has volunteered for more than 20 years, and still volunteers two days a week. Phyllis Caffey, Georgia Beta Sigma Chapter Nominated by Rebecca Kenerly Phyllis has worked with and helped to plan a puppet show program, “Hands are Not for Hitting,” for elementary schools. . She is active in her community, helping elderly neighbors. Barbara Clapp, North Carolina Alpha Omicron Chapter Nominated by Donna Barrier and her chapter sisters Barbara had to retire due to an accident she had at school while teaching. In spite of personal challenges, Barbara remains active in her church, in her community and in our sorority. Her positive attitude is remarkable and contagious. Joan Coates, Kentucky Alpha Kappa Chapter Nominated by Susan Anderson For more than 27 years, Joan Coates and her husband have been involved and committed volunteers for Odyssey of the Mind, an international education program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities to students of all ages. Through her dedication as Kentucky’s Odyssey of the Mind Association director, Joan has grown membership by 20 percent since 2006.
Patricia Coggin, Tennessee Chi Chapter Nominated by Liz Ford Patricia Coggin was recently inducted into the FBLA Wall of Fame. Patricia has worked with Future Business Leaders of America for over 20 years and her student delegations are frequent national winners. Patricia is the first teacher in Tennessee to receive this prestigious award. Marlene Cosgrove, Michigan Delta Chapter Nominated by Nancy Lynne Nelson Marlene directs the Hello Hospital Program at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. She works with the medical staff to educate and alleviate concerns of 1st graders who have been admitted. Marlene volunteers as a tour guide at the Michigan State University Children’s Garden, and maintains the teaching and learning garden at Marble Elementary. Nelma Cowser, Texas Epsilon Sigma Chapter Nominated by Elizabeth Ruckman Nelma volunteers for the Cy-Fair Independent School District, Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, Fairfield Women’s Club and Tamina Community Center. Alberta “Birdy” Crane, Texas Gamma Delta Chapter Nominated by Janet Ramsey and her chapter sisters Birdy has given countless hours teaching neighbors how to plant beds and do well in gardening. After retirement, she began tutoring math and now has 14 students a week. Mary Lee Crump, Texas Delta Epsilon Chapter Nominated by her chapter sisters Mary Lee Crump’s commitment to education shows in her dedication to the Alvin Independent School District Education Foundation and the Alvin Library League. Mary Lee coordinates fundraisers, designs and writes newsletters and brochures and assists with budget planning. Ara Ann Duty, Kansas Rho Chapter Nominated by Chapter President Joyce Schneider Ara Ann and her husband Dennis serve as presidents of Air Capitol Active Aging. They organize and lead short tours in the Midwest. Teresa Elordi, Idaho Epsilon Chapter Nominated by Roberta Bonaminio and Lisabeth Hassler Teresa is a physical education teacher who goes above and beyond her regular teaching day. She was recognized as her school district’s 2009 Teacher of the Year. Anice Fenley, Texas Delta Xi Chapter Nominated by Robin Buchanan-Harrington Anice is a fine arts teacher at Wild Peach Elementary. In October 2009, the newly renovated Columbia Rosenwald School (West Columbia) was dedicated. She played a key role in bringing awareness to the youth in the community regarding this historical school and event. Excellence in Action in Altruism Betty Francis, Michigan Delta Chapter Nominated by Nancy Lynne Nelson A volunteer at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing for 16 years, Betty also makes blankets for babies and children admitted there and is president of the Gift Shop volunteer group. Betty also donates her time to the Ronald McDonald House and serves on the Lansing area Episcopal Church Altruistic Committee. Maria Garcia-Rameau, Texas Omicron Chapter Nominated by Kathy Hopson Recognitions: Texas Exes (University of Texas-Austin Education Department) Outstanding Teacher, 1999; U.S.A. Today National Spanish Teacher of the Year, 1999; Texas Council for the Humanities Outstanding Spanish Teacher, 1998; U.S. Department of Education Award for Excellence in Education, 1986; Texas Foreign Language Association Spanish Teacher of the Year, 1991; Scarborough High School Teacher of the Year, 1996; HISD Teacher of the Year finalist, 1991; The Elizabeth Brand Award, 1991; A.A.T.S.D. Brazos Chapter Excellence and Dedication Award, 1996. Diane Golton, California Beta Chapter Nominated by Carole Taylor Diane knits with the Nordie Knitters who make chemo caps, hats, scarves and blankets for infants in NICU, chemo babies, cancer patients, On Lok (seniors), Laguna Honda (seniors and disabled adults), families in Afghanistan (through TIE—Trust in Education) and Nepal. She also works on Expanding Your Horizons. Gerry Haggard, Texas Gamma Nu Chapter Nominated by Dinah Carter Gerry chairs the Book Project for Plano Retired Teachers, which gave 6,800 books to district Title 1 students; secures books by writing grants and authoring books for a publisher; serves as a facilitator for Journey of Hope, a grief support group for children. Sharon Hanki, California Tau Chapter Nominated by Alice Wuerch and Claudia Bassler-Wrona Sharon has received many awards for outstanding contributions to her community, including support of Child Help, CASA USA, OPTION HOUSE and the Ronald McDonald House, along with participation in Relay for Life with fellow Alpha Delta Kappa sisters. Martha Harris, Texas Beta Chi Chapter Nominated by Paula O’Neill and her chapter sisters Martha volunteers weekly in a local school’s kindergarten for special projects and extra help to the teacher.
